We report a facile synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) nanodendrites of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and nitrogen-doped carbon NPs (N-CNPs) by electroless deposition of Pd2+ ions. N-CNPs being an electron-enriched material act as a reducing agent. Moreover, the availability of a variety of nitrogen species in N-CNPs promotes the open arm structure as well as stabilizes the oriented 3D assembly of primary Pd NPs. The dendrites exhibit superior catalytic activity for methanol (0.5 M) oxidation in alkaline media (1 M NaOH) which is ascribed to the large electrochemical active surface area and the enhanced mass activity with repeated use. Further mass activity improvement has been realized after acid-treatment of dendrites which is attributed to the increment in the -OH group. The dendrites show higher mass activity (J(f) similar to 653 A g(-1)) in comparison with a commercial Pt-carbon/Pd-carbon (Pt-C/Pd-C) catalyst (J(f) similar to 46 and 163 A g(-1), respectively), better operational stability, superior CO tolerance with I-f/I-b (similar to 3.7) over a commercial Pt-C/Pd-C catalyst (I-f/I-b similar to 1.6 and 1.75, respectively) and may serve as a promising alternative to commercial Pt-C catalysts for anode application in alkaline fuel cells. To ensure the adaptability of our 3D-nanodendrites for other catalytic activities, we studied 4-nitrophenol reduction at room temperature. The 3D-nanodendrites show excellent catalytic activity toward 4-nitrophenol reduction, as well.

Au nanoparticles stabilized by poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were used as a catalyst to grow vertically aligned ZnO nanowires (NWs). The density of ZnO NWs with very uniform diameter was controlled by changing the concentration of Au-PMMA nanoparticles (NPs). The density was in direct proportion to the concentration of Au-PMMA NPs. Furthermore, the growth process of ZnO NWs using Au-PMMA NPs was systematically investigated through comparison with that using Au thin film as a catalyst. Au-PMMA NPs induced polyhedral-shaped bases of ZnO NWs separated from each other, while Au thin film formed a continuous network of bases of ZnO NWs. This approach provides a facile and cost-effective catalyst density control method, allowing us to grow high-quality vertically aligned ZnO NWs suitable for many viable applications.

Despite intensive research on optimizing the methods for depositing carbon encapsulated ferromagnetic nanoparticles, the effect of the carbon cages remains unclear. In the present work, the effect of the graphitic cages on the magnetization of the ferromagnetic core has been studied by comparing the magnetic properties of pure and carbon encapsulated Ni particles of the same size. The carbon encapsulated Ni particles were formed using an electric arc discharge in de-ionized water between a solid graphite cathode and an anode consisting of Ni and C in a mass ratio of Ni:C = 7:3. This method is shown to have potential for low cost production of carbon encapsulated Ni nanoparticle samples with narrow particle size distributions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis were used to study the crystallography, morphology, and size distribution of the encapsulated and pure Ni nanoparticle samples. The availability of encapsulated particles with various sizes allowed us to elucidate the role of carbon cages in size-dependent properties. Our data suggest that even though encapsulation is beneficial for protection against hostile chemical environments and for avoiding low proximity phenomena, it suppresses the saturation magnetization of the Ni cores.

Optimised ultrafast laser ablation can result in almost complete ionisation of the target material and the formation of a high velocity plasma jet. Collisions with the ambient gas behind the shock front cools the material resulting in the formation of mainly spherical, single crystal nanoscale particles in the condensate. This work characterises the nanoscale structures produced by the ultrafast laser interactions in He atmospheres at STP with Ni and Al. High resolution transmission electron microscopy was employed to study the microstructure of the condensates and to classify the production of particles forms as a function of the illumination conditions.

This paper presents the results from 10 minidrum centrifuge tests conducted at the Schofield Centre, compiled with 4 additional test results from Thusyanthan et al., 2008. All these tests were designed to measure the uplift resistance of a pipeline installed into stiff clay by trenching and backfilling, then uplifted approximately 3 months after installation. All tests were conducted at 1:30 scale using soil obtained from offshore clay samples. Experimental results show that clay blocks remained intact after 3 prototype months of consolidation, and were lifted rather than sheared during pipe pullout. The uplift resistance therefore depends on the weight of the soil cover and the shearing resistance mobilised at the softening contact points between the intact blocks and within the interstitial slurry. Slow drained pullout led to lower resistance than fast pullout, indicating that the drained response is critical for design. The varying scatter shows that peak uplift resistance is very sensitive to the arrangement of the backfill blocks when the cover and pipe diameter are comparable to the block size. Flexible organic elastomeric nanoparticles (ENP) and two kinds of rigid inorganic silica nanoparticles were dispersed respectively into a bisphenol-A epoxy resin in order to tailor and compare the performance of mechanical properties. It was found that the well-dispersed flexible ENP greatly enhanced the toughness of the epoxy with the cost of modulus and strength. Comparatively, the rigid silica nanoparticles improved Young's modulus, tensile strength and fracture toughness simultaneously. Both fumed and sol-gel-formed nanosilica particles conducted similar results in reinforcing the epoxy resin, although the latter exhibited almost perfect nanoparticle dispersion in matrix. The toughening mechanisms of nanocomposites were further discussed based on fractographic analysis.
