The radiolysis of cysteine under plasma discharge and irradiation of low-energy Ion beam was investigated. The damage of cysteine in aqueous solution under discharge was assessed via the acid ninhydrin reagent and the yield of cystine produced from the reaction was analyzed by FTIR In addition, the generation of hydrogen sulfide was also identified The destruction of solid cysteine under low-energy ion beam irradiation was estimated via monitoring IR bands of different functional groups (-SH, -NH3, -COO-) of cysteine. and the production of cystine from ion-irradiated solid cysteine after dissolution in water was also verified These results may help us to understand the inactivation of sulphydryl enzymes under direct and indirect interaction with the low-energy ion irradiation (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved.

Ternary europium complex Eu(tta)(3)phen was covalently bonded with the general mesoporous. material SBA-15 and SBA-15-type of periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) material via impregnation of Eu(tta)(3)center dot 2H(2)O into phen-S15 and phen-PMO, respectively, through a ligand exchange reaction. The parent materials of phen-S15 and phen-PMO were synthesized by co-condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) or 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE) and the functionalized chelate ligand 5-(N,N-bis(3-triethoxysilyl)propyl)ureyl-1,10-phenanthroline (phen-Si) in the presence of Pluronic P123 surfactant as template, which were confirmed by SEM, XRD, FTIR, Si-29 CP-MAS NMR, and N-2 adsorption measurements.

The current study investigates the feasibility of using a biodegradable polymeric stent in common bile duct (CBD) repair and reconstruction. Here, poly(l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA, molar ratio LA/GA = 80/20) was processed into a circular tube- and dumbbell-shaped specimens to determine the in vitro degradation behavior in bile. The morphology, weight loss, and molecular weight changes were then investigated in conjunction with evaluations of the mechanical properties of the specimen. Circular tube-shaped PLGA stents with X-ray opacity were subsequently used in common bile duct exploration (CBDE) and primary suturing in canine models. Next, X-ray images of CBD stents in vivo were compared and levels of serum liver enzymes and a histological analysis were conducted after stent transplantation. The results showed that the PLGA stents exhibited the required biomedical properties and spontaneously disappeared from CBDs in 4-5 weeks. The degradation period and function match the requirements in repair and reconstruction of CBDs to support the duct, guide bile drainage, and reduce T-tube-related complications.

Nanostructure and morphology and their development of poly(di-n-hexylsilane) (PDHS) and poly(di-n-butylsilane) (PDBS) during the crystal-mesophase transition are investigated using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide angle X-ray diffraction and hot-stage atomic force microscopy. At room temperature, PDHS consists of stacks of lamellae separated by mesophase layers, which can be well accounted using an ideal two-phase model. During the crystal-mesophase transition, obvious morphological changes are observed due to the marked changes in main chain conformation and intermolecular distances between crystalline phase and mesophase. In contrast to PDHS, the lamellae in PDBS barely show anisotropy in dimensions at room temperature. The nonperiodic structure and rather small electronic density fluctuation in PDBS lead to the much weak SAXS. The nonperiodic structure is preserved during the crystal-mesophase transition because of the similarity of main chain conformation and intermolecular distances between crystalline phase and mesophase.

The cyclization of cis-1,4 polybutadiene in various solvents (mesitylene, xylene, toluene, benzene and cyclohexane) with the catalyst composed of CH2=CHCH2Cl-AlEt2Cl was studied. The infrared spectra of the cyclized products were investigated. It was shown that the products produced in cyclohexane and mesitylene have infrared spectra identical with those of the original cis-1,4-polybutadiene and the products obtained in other aromatics have infrared spectra different from each other and distinguishing with those of the parent cis-1,4 polybutadiene. The analyses of infrared spectra came to the conclusion that the molecules of aromatic solvent participate in cyclization of cis-1,4 polybutadiene at the given condition. A possible reaction scheme involving an electrophilic substitution of carbonium ions for Ar-H of aromatic solvents was proposed. Some experimental facts were explained with great satisfaction on the basis of the above mechanism.

In this paper, we describe a simple procedure to make agar-gel microelectrodes by filling micropipettes. These microelectrodes were used to study K+ transfer across the agar-water \ 1,2-dichloroethane interface facilitated by dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6), and the transfer of tetraethylammonium (TEA(+)). The results observed were similar to those obtained at micro-liquid \ liquid interfaces. The effect of various amounts of agar in the aqueous phase was optimized and 3% agar was chosen based on the potential window and solidification time. The different shapes of micro-agar-gel electrodes were prepared in a similar way. The fabricated agar-gel microelectrodes obey the classical micro-disk steady-state current equation, which is different from the behavior of a normal micropipette filled with aqueous solution without silanization. Neuroinflammation is a key component of Parkinson’s disease (PD) neuropathology. Skewed microglia activation with pro-inflammatory prevailing over anti-inflammatory phenotypes may contribute to neurotoxicity via the production of cytokines and neurotoxic species. Therefore, microglia polarization has been proposed as a target for neuroprotection. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) is expressed in microglia and peripheral immune cells, where it is involved in macrophages polarization and in the control of inflammatory responses, by modulating gene transcription. Several studies have shown that PPARγ agonists are neuroprotective in experimental PD models in rodents and primates. however safety concerns have been raised about PPARγ agonists thiazolidinediones (TZD) currently available, prompting for the development of non-TZD compounds. Aim of this study was to characterize a novel PPARγ agonist non TZD, MDG548, for its potential neuroprotective effect in PD models and its immunomodulatory activity as the underlying mechanism of neuroprotection. The neuroprotective activity of MDG548 was assessed in vivo in the subacute MPTP model and in the chronic MPTP/probenecid (MPTPp) model of PD. MDG548 activity on microglia activation and phenotype was investigated in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) via the evaluation of pro- (TNF-α and iNOS) and anti-inflammatory (CD206) molecules, with fluorescent immunohistochemistry. Moreover, cultured murine microglia MMGT12 were treated with MDG548 in association with the inflammagen LPS, pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules were measured in the medium by ELISA assay and phagocytosis was evaluated by fluorescent immunohistochemistry for CD68. MDG548 arrested dopaminergic cells degeneration in the SNc in both the subacute MPTP and the chronic MPTPp models of PD, and reverted MPTPp-induced motor impairment. Moreover, MDG548 reduced microglia activation, iNOS and TNF-α production, while induced CD206 in microglia. In cultured unstimulated microglia, LPS increased TNF-α production and CD68 expression, while decreased CD206 expression. MDG548 reverted LPS effect on TNF-α and CD206 restoring physiological levels, while strongly increased CD68 expression. Results suggest that the PPARγ agonist MDG548 is neuroprotective in experimental models of PD. MDG548 targets microglia polarization by correcting the imbalance between pro- over antiinflammatory molecules, offering a novel immunomodulatory approach to neuroprotection.
