Examination of Stress-Fields In Elastic Plastic Indentation

A block of high-purity copper was indented by a 120-degrees diamond-tipped cone. Strain gauges were placed on the surface to measure the radial strains at different surface locations, during loading as well as unloading. The competence of three stress fields proposed for elastic-plastic indentation is assessed by comparing the predicted surface radial strains with those experimentally observed.

Gradient solid-electrolyte for use with dissimilar gas electrodes

The EMF of a solid-state cell, incorporating a composite solid-electrolyte with gradual variation in composition, and dissimilar gas electrodes, has been studied as a function of temperature and partial pressures at the electrodes. The cell with the configuration: Pt, CO2' + O2' parallel-to Na2CO3\Na(SO4)x(CO3)1-x\Na2SO4 parallel-to SO3'' + SO2'' + O2'', Pt x=0 x=1 was investigated in the temperature range 973 to 1079 K. The solid-electrolyte surface exposed to SO3 + SO2 + O2 gas mixture was doped-Na2SO4, whereas the CO2 + O2 gas mixture was in contact with pure Na2CO3. The composition of the solid solution between the carbonate and sulfate, with hexagonal structure, was varied gradually between the boundary values. It has been found that the EMF of the cell is close to that calculated from thermodynamic data, assuming unit transport number for Na+ ions. The gradient in the concentration of sulfate and carbonate ions in the electrolyte does not give rise to a significant diffusion potential.

Interaction of solid films of C60 and C70 with nickel

Interaction of varying coverages of Ni metal with solid films of C60 and C70 has been investigated by UV and X-ray photemission spectroscopy. The shifts in the valence bands of C60 (as well as of C70) with increasing Ni coverage accompanied by a shift of the C is level of the fullerene to lower binding energies suggest charge-transfer from the metal to the fullerene as in transition metal complexes of π-systems.

Nafion®-bound carbon electrodes containing transitionmetal phthalocyanines for oxygen reduction in solid-polymer-electrolyte fuel cells

Catalytic activities of some transition metal-phthalocyanine complexes towards electroreduction of molecular oxygen are examined on Nafion®-bound and bare porous carbon electrodes in 2.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte. It is found that these metal complexes exhibit better catalytic activities towards oxygen reduction with the Nafion®-bound electrodes.

Nutritional evaluation of silage made from the toxic weed parthenium hysterophorus in animals

After ensilation, the toxic Compositae weed Parthenium hysterophorus was devoid of the toxic principle parthenin. Laboratory-scale ensilation indicated that no parthenin was detectable after 5 wk of anaerobic fermentation. For animal feeding studies, silage was made on a large scale from Parthenium mixed with maize or from Parthenium alone. Crossbred bull and buffalo bull calves were fed diets containing the silages, or control diet without silage, for 12 wk. The animals consumed both silages with relish, and body weight gains of silage-fed calves did not differ from those of the controls. The digestibilities of dry matter, fibre and nitrogen-free extract were greater with the control diet, but the biological value of proteins tended to be greater with the silage-containing diets. Haematological studies indicated no significant differences between experimental and control groups in selected parameters, except for a reduction in blood urea nitrogen in the animals fed silage. The possible causes for these biochemical alterations are discussed. Since the nutritive value of Parthenium silage compares favourably with the standard diet, and Parthenium seeds collected from the silage did not germinate, we suggest that ensilation can be used as an additional method in the containment and eradication of these plants, which grow wild in India.

Orientational phase transitions in C70: A Raman spectroscopic investigation

Raman investigations of C70 films in the 14-370-K range show significant changes across the orientational phase transitions around 270 and 330 K. Seven of the Raman modes of C70 soften smoothly across the transitions, the magnitude of the decrease in frequencies being in the range of 2-5 cm-1. Linewidths of the bands increase in the transition region over and above the anharmonic contributions.

Pressure-induced phase transitions in LiRbSO4: a Raman spectroscopic study

Room-temperature Raman spectra of LiRbSO4 were studied as a function of pressure up to 170 kbar for two different orientations of the crystal. Four pressure-induced phase transitions at about 2, 17, 32 and 57 kbar were observed. The transitions at 17 and 57 kbar have slow kinetics, taking about 4 h for their completion. These phase transitions are associated with the orientations of the SO4 ions in the unit cell.

Specific-heat measurements during cooling through the glass-transition region

In this paper we report the measurements of specific heats of five glass formers as they are cooled through the glass-transition region. The measurements are compared with other specific-heat measurements such as adiabatic-calorimetry and ac-calorimetry measurements. The data are then analyzed using a model of enthalpy relaxation and nonequilibrium cooling, which can track the nonequilibrium relaxation time tau(S). The relevant parameters that describe tau(S) are obtained, allowing us to compare the enthalpy-relaxation times obtained from this method with other methods. We display the clear connection of the unrelaxed enthalpy with the nonequilibrium relaxation time and also show the role played by the delayed heat release from the unrelaxed enthalpy in the glass-transition region. We have also made certain definite observations regarding the equilibrium configurational specific heat and the Vogel-Fulcher law, which describes tau(S).

Formation of a single, rotated-Brass (1 1 0)< 5 5 6 > texture by hot cross-rolling of an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr alloy

The present work describes the evolution of a strong, single-component rotated-Brass ((1 1 0) < 5 5 6 >) texture in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr alloy by an uneven hot cross-rolling with frequent interpass annealing. This texture development is unique because hot rolling of aluminum alloys results in orientation distribution along the ``beta-fibre''. It has been demonstrated that the deformation by cross-rolling of a partially recrystallized grain structure having rotated-Cube and Goss orientations, and the recrystallization resistance of near-Brass-oriented elongated grains play a critical role in development of this texture. Banded spatiotemporal chaos in sheared nematogenic fluids

We present the results of a numerical study of a model of the hydrodynamics of a sheared nematogenic fluid, taking into account the effects of order-parameter stresses on the velocity profile but allowing spatial variations only in the gradient direction. When parameter values are such that the stress from orientational distortions is comparable to the bare viscous stress, the system exhibits steady states with the characteristics of shear banding. In addition, nonlinearity in the coupling of extensional flow to orientation leads to the appearance of a new steady state in which the features of both spatiotemporal chaos and shear banding are present.

Evolution in the time series of vortex velocity fluctuations across different regimes of vortex flow

Investigations of vortex velocity fluctuation in time domain have revealed a presence of low frequency velocity fluctuations which evolve with the different driven phases of the vortex state in a single crystal of 2H-NbSe2. The observation of velocity fluctuations with a characteristic low frequency is associated with the onset of nonlinear nature of vortex flow deep in the driven elastic vortex state.
