Modelling of the surface emission of the low magnetic field magnetar SGR 0418+5729

We perform a detailed modelling of the post-outburst surface emission of the low magnetic field magnetar SGR 0418+5729. The dipolar magnetic field of this source, B=6×1012G estimated from its spin-down rate, is in the observed range of magnetic fields for normal pulsars. The source is further characterized by a high pulse fraction and a single-peak profile. Using synthetic temperature distribution profiles, and fully accounting for the general-relativistic effects of light deflection and gravitational redshift, we generate synthetic X-ray spectra and pulse profiles that we fit to the observations. We find that asymmetric and symmetric surface temperature distributions can reproduce equally well the observed pulse profiles and spectra of SGR 0418. None the less, the modelling allows us to place constraints on the system geometry (i.e. the angles ψ and ξ that the rotation axis makes with the line of sight and the dipolar axis, respectively), as well as on the spot size and temperature contrast on the neutron star surface. After performing an analysis iterating between the pulse profile and spectra, as done in similar previous works, we further employed, for the first time in this context, a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo approach to extract constraints on the model parameters from the pulse profiles and spectra, simultaneously. We find that, to reproduce the observed spectrum and flux modulation: (a) the angles must be restricted to 65° ≲ ψ + ξ ≲ 125° or 235° ≲ ψ + ξ ≲ 295°; (b) the temperature contrast between the poles and the equator must be at least a factor of ∼6, and (c) the size of the hottest region ranges between 0.2 and 0.7 km (including uncertainties on the source distance). Lastly, we interpret our findings within the context of internal and external heating models.

A Unique Prestressed Concrete Pedestrian Bridge in Spain

This paper describes the so-called Kiss Bridge. This structure resembles a kiss, a subtle touch of structures. The beams have been structurally designed to adapt the Japanese art of paper folding called "origami." The material used for constructing the floating beams is white reinforced concrete in the form of folded shells. The two geometrically different parts have distinct structural behaviors. The length of the main pathway of both structures is over 60 m. The pedestrian bridge crosses an artificial rainwater channel with a skew of 45° with respect to the referred channel. The joint between the cantilever structure and the Y-shaped one is located over the middle of the channel. Each stretch has different transversal sections. The pedestrian bridge is made with prestressed self-compacting reinforced concrete of 60 MPa. The foundation is shallow, comprising footings and footing beams made of 25 MPa conventional concrete. The cantilever structure with its foundations is designed as a semi-integral bridge whereas the Y-shaped one is an integral structure. The dynamic behavior of the structure was carefully studied to ensure that the dynamic loads generated by pedestrians do not cause excessive vibrations, especially to the cantilever structure, which could present dynamic interactions with the pedestrians walking. The bridge was recognized, in the 2014 edition of the fib Awards for Outstanding Concrete Structures, for having made a valuable contribution to the image and promotion of concrete structures.

Un dels aspectes més desconeguts de la trajectòria de Jaume Cabré com a escriptor és el seu interès per la literatura infantil i juvenil. Si bé la dedicació a aquest gènere consta només de quatre obres (les novel·les Galceran, l’heroi de la guerra negra, La història que en Roc Pons no coneixia i L’home de Sau; i la nouvelle L’any del Blauet) editades entre 1978 i 1984, els textos que en resulten mostren una gran similitud, tant pel que fa al tema com a l’estructura, amb la narrativa escrita per a adults, cosa que evidencia la coherència del món literari creat per l’autor.

A major issue in the ongoing Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations is investor-state dispute resolution as it relates to foreign investments. The United States would like to have strong investor protections similar to those of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) included in the TTIP agreement. Civil society groups on both sides of the Atlantic object to binding arbitration of investment disputes, fearing that arbitration awards could endanger environmental and other types of regulations. This paper examines the experience with investor-state dispute resolution under NAFTA to determine whether judgments rendered in these cases have had adverse effects.

Modellazione e verifica sperimentale delle dinamiche di aspirazione di un motore turbo GDI

Obiettivo di questo elaborato è quello di provvedere alla elaborazione dei dati geometrici necessari alla modellazione dei condotti di aspirazione e scarico di un motore 4 cilindri turbo benzina ad iniezione diretta (GDI) disponibile a banco prove. I dati sperimentali raccolti sono stati elaborati e sintetizzati, con lo scopo di fare avvicinare il più possibile le caratteristiche del modello a quelle del sistema a banco (cercando dunque di rendere il modello il più veritiero possibile). In primo luogo, saranno descritte le principali caratteristiche dei motori a combustione interna, con particolare enfasi rivolta ai componenti ed ai processi che caratterizzano i motori turbo GDI. In un secondo momento, sarà descritto come si è proceduto nella raccolta dei dati necessari alla modellazione e nell’elaborazione degli stessi. Il software cui l’elaborazione dei dati necessari alla modellazione è stata rivolta è GT-Suite, prodotto da Gamma Technologies e largamente utilizzato dalla maggior parte delle aziende del settore automotive.
