In this article, we address the importance and relevance that social networks exhibit in their use as an educational resource.  This relevance relies in the possibility of implementing new learning resources or increasing the level of the participant's connectivity, as well as developing learning communities.  Also, the risk entailed from their use is discussed, especially for the students that have a low technological education or those having excessive confidence on the media.  It is important to highlight that the educational use of social networks is not a simple extension or translation of the student's habitual, recreational use, but that it implies an important change in the roles given to teachers as well as learners; from accommodative learning environments that only encourage memorization to other environments that demand an active, reflective, collaborative and proactive attitude, that require the development/acquisition of technological as well as social abilities, aptitudes and values.  It is also important to highlight that a correct implementation and adequate use will not only foment formal learning, but also informal and non-formal learning.

Pre-fight displays typically provide honest, but sometimes dishonest, information about resource holding potential and may be influenced by assessment of resource value and hence motivation to acquire the resource. These assessments of potential costs and benefits are also predicted to influence escalated fight behaviour. This is examined in shell exchange contests of hermit crabs in which we establish an information asymmetry about a particularly poor quality shell. The poor shell was created by gluing sand to the interior whereas control shells lacked sand and the low value of the poor shell could not be accurately assessed by the opponent. Crabs in the poor shell showed changes in the use of pre-fight displays, apparently to increase the chances of swapping shells. When the fights escalated, crabs in poor shells fought harder if they took the role of attacker but gave up quickly if in the defender role. These tactics appear to be adaptive but do not result in a major shift in the roles taken or outcome. We thus link resource assessment with pre-fight displays, the roles taken, tactics used during escalation and the outcome of these contests.

Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) is an important gastrointestinal hormone, which regulates insulin release and glucose homeostasis, but is rapidly inactivated by enzymatic N-terminal truncation. Here we report the enzyme resistance and biological activity of several Glu(3) -substituted analogues of GIP namely; (Ala(3))GIP, (Lys(3))GIP, (Phe(3))GIP, (Trp(3))GIP and (Tyr(3))GIP. Only (Lys(3))- GIP demonstrated moderately enhanced resistance to DPP-IV (p <0.05 to p <0.01) compared to native GIP. All analogues demonstrated a decreased potency in cAMP production (EC50 1.47 to 11.02 nM; p <0.01 to p <0.001) with (Lys(3))GIP and (Phe(3))GIP significantly inhibiting GIP-stimulated cAMP production (p <0.05). In BRIN-BD11 cells, (Lys(3))GIP, (Phe(3))GIP, (Trp(3))GIP and (Tyr(3))- GIP did not stimulate insulin secretion with both (Lys(3))GIP and (Phe(3))GIP significantly inhibiting GIP-stimulated insulin secretion (p <0.05). Injection of each GIP analogue together with glucose in oblob mice significantly increased the glycaemic excursion compared to control (p <0.05 to p <0.001). This was associated with lack of significant insulin responses. (Ala(3))GIP, (Phe(3))GIP and (Tyr(3))GIP, when administered together with GIP, significantly reduced plasma insulin (p <0.05 top <0.01) and impaired the glucose-lowering ability (p <0.05 to p <0.01) of the native peptide. The DPP-IV resistance and GIP antagonism observed were similar but less pronounced than (Pro(3))GIP. These data demonstrate that position 3 amino acid substitution of GIP with (Ala(3)), (Phe(3)), (Tyr(3)) or (Pro(3)) provides a new class of functional GIP receptor antagonists. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. Parasites have been suggested to influence many aspects of host behaviour. Some of these effects may be mediated via their impact on host energy budgets. This impact may include effects on both energy intake and absorption as well as components of expenditure, including resting metabolic rate (RMR) and activity (e.g. grooming). Despite their potential importance, the energy costs of parasitism have seldom been directly quantified in a field setting. Here we pharmacologically treated female Cape ground squirrels (Xerus inauris) with anti-parasite drugs and measured the change in body composition, the daily energy expenditure (DEE) using doubly labelled water, the RMR by respirometry and the proportions of time spent looking for food, feeding, moving and grooming. Post-treatment animals gained an average 19 g of fat or approximately 25 kJ d(-1). DEE averaged 382 kJ d-1 prior to and 375 kJ d-1 post treatment (p> 0.05). RMR averaged 174 kJ d-1 prior to and 217 kJ d-1 post treatment (p

The tribe Gymnothamnieae Kajimura was proposed for the monotypic ceramiacean genus Gymnothamnion J. Agardh, previously placed either in the Ptiloteae Cramer or the Antithamnieae Hommersand. A bisporangial isolate of G. elegans (Schousboe ex C. Agardh) J. Agardh from Morocco formed only bisporangia in culture. Its smaller uninucleate cells and sporangia than those of tetrasporophytes suggested that bisporophytes may be haploid as in another member of the Ceramiaceae, Aglaothamnion diaphanum L'Hardy-Halos et Maggs. Phylogenetic analyses of the gene for the large subunit of rubisco (rbcL) from Gymnothamnion and representatives of eight other tribes of the Ceramiaceae confirmed that the removal of Gymnothamnion from the Ptiloteae and the Antithamnieae was warranted. Whereas all tribes with two or more representatives in our analyses were moderately or robustly resolved, Gymnothamnion did not form a strong clade with any other taxa. Analysis of rbcL sequences failed to resolve relationships between tribes, probably due to saturation at the high levels of sequence divergence found. In addition to reproductive features previously reported and interpreted as primitive, G. elegans shows a primitive vegetative feature and it is suggested that Gymnothamnion may be one of the most basal of the taxa presently included in the Ceramiaceae.

The liquid phase selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to cinnamyl alcohol has been carried out over a graphite-supported iridium catalyst. The effect of reaction parameters such as temperature, pressure, concentration of reactant, the effect of addition of product to the feed and pre-reduction of the catalyst were studied. In situ pre-reduction of the catalyst with hydrogen had a very significant enhancing effect on the conversion of cinnamaldehyde and selectivity of the catalyst to cinnamyl alcohol. Kinetic analysis of the pre-reduced catalyst showed that the reaction is zero order with respect to cinnamaldehyde and first order with respect to hydrogen. The reaction follows an Arrhenius behaviour with an activation energy of 37 kJ mol(-1). Detailed analysis of the reaction showed that hydrogenation of the C=C double bond to give hydrocinnamaldehyde predominantly occurred at low conversions of cinnamaldehyde (

Recent experimental evidence has challenged the paradigm according to which radiation traversal through the nucleus of a cell is a prerequisite for producing genetic changes or biological responses. Thus, unexposed cells in the vicinity of directly irradiated cells or recipient cells of medium from irradiated cultures can also be affected. The aim of the present study was to evaluate, by means of the medium transfer technique, whether interleukin-8 and its receptor (CXCR1) may play a role in the bystander effect after gamma irradiation of T98G cells in vitro. In fact the cell specificity in inducing the bystander effect and in receiving the secreted signals that has been described suggests that not only the ability to release the cytokines but also the receptor profiles are likely to modulate the cell responses and the final outcome. The dose and time dependence of the cytokine release into the medium, quantified using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, showed that radiation causes alteration in the release of interleukin-8 from exposed cells in a dose-independent but time-dependent manner. The relative receptor expression was also affected in exposed and bystander cells.
