Rockpools on a tropical f lat reef off the southeastern coast of Brazil were sampled to determine the influence of pool morphometry and water characteristics on fish community structure. The pool closest to the inner fringe of the reef had lower salinity and higher temperature due to inflow of groundwater. The other pools varied only with respect to their morphometric characteristics, algal cover, and bottom composition. Species with a strong affinity for estuarine- like waters characterized the pool closest to the beach and distinguished its fish community from that of the other pools. Instead of being strongly structured by the physicochemical setting and position in the reef, fish communities of the other pools were determined by behavioral preferences and intra- and interspecific interactions. Differences in community structure were related to pool size (the larger sizes permitting the permanency of schooling species), to algal cover (which allowed camouflage for large predatory species), to bottom composition (which provided substrate for turf flora available to territorial herbivores), and to ecological effects (e.g., competition, territoriality, and predation). Although distribution patterns of tidepool fishes have previously been related to the availability of niches, independent of pool position in the reef, our results show synergistic interactions between water properties, presence or absence of niches, and ecological relationships in structuring tidepool fish communities.

Navigation and surveying formed a connecting link, as it were, between what was getting to be called the “Old Navy” and what was soon to take shape as a “New Navy.” Seamanship, as an art of special character, was beginning to change its form with the passing of sail power and its supersession by the steam engine; while requiring in its new form no less ability and practiced judgment in the handling of large ships, it offered a diminished field for expertness in craft of only moderate size and speed among officers doing simple watch duty not in company with other ships; and, therefore, it was threatened with a materially lessened regard.

Understanding recolonization processes of intertidal fish assemblages is integral for predicting the consequences of significant natural or anthropogenic impacts on the intertidal zone. Recolonization of experimentally defaunated intertidal rockpools by fishes at Bass Point, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, was assessed quantitatively by using one long-term and two short-term studies. Rockpools of similar size and position at four sites within the intertidal zone were repeatedly defaunated of their fish fauna after one week, one month, and three months during two shortterm studies in spring and autumn (5 months each), and every six months for the long-term study (12 months). Fish assemblages were highly resilient to experimental perturbations—recolonizing to initial fish assemblage structure within 1−3 months. This recolonization was primarily due to subadults (30−40 mm TL) and adults (>40 mm TL) moving in from adjacent rockpools and presumably to abundant species competing for access to vacant habitat. The main recolonizers were those species found in highest numbers in initial samples, such as Bathygobius cocosensis, Enneapterygius rufopileus, and Girella elevata. Defaunation did not affect the size composition of fishes, except during autumn and winter when juveniles (<30 mm TL) recruited to rockpools. It appears that Bass Point rockpool fish assemblages are largely controlled by postrecruitment density-dependent mechanisms that indicate that recolonization may be driven by deterministic mechanisms.

The present study is an early stage of this programme and examines several species of fishes under controlled conditions to delineate responses to tagging as a function of type of tag, species, size, and sex of fish, and position of tag placement. It is intimately related to another phase of research currently being conducted by the author on age and growth of several species important to the fishery of Lake Victoria (e.g. Tilapia spp., and several catfishes, Clarias mossambicus Peters and Bagrus docmac (Forskal). Data reported are both a reflection of growth studies and an attempt to achieve insight into tag loss, growth, and mortality that might be expected to occur in these species under lake conditions with reference to the above parameters.

The safety of the flights, and in particular conflict resolution for separation assurance, is one of the main tasks of Air Traffic Control. Conflict resolution requires decision making in the face of the considerable levels of uncertainty inherent in the motion of aircraft. We present a Monte Carlo framework for conflict resolution which allows one to take into account such levels of uncertainty through the use of a stochastic simulator. A simulation example inspired by current air traffic control practice illustrates the proposed conflict resolution strategy. Self-biased Terfenol-D 2-2 composites exhibit high frequency of actuation and good magnetomechanical properties; however, their potential usefulness is highly dependent on their magnetoacoustic properties, particularly for ultrasonic applications. The speed of sound, c, and its variation with an externally applied magnetic field have been measured for the above composites using a 10 MHz longitudinal pulse. When the sound propagates parallel to the layers, the acoustic impedance was found to be independent of the external applied field, and lower than that for bulk Terfenol-D. The magnetomechanical coupling coefficient was found to be generally low (up to 0.35) and dependent on the volume ratio of materials, being higher for the specimens with greater content of Terfenol-D. The low attenuation, low acoustic impedance, and high frequency of actuation make this structure an interesting alternative for use in underwatersound navigation and ranging and other ultrasonic applications. When the pulse propagates orthogonal to the layers, c was found to vary by up to 3% with the application of an external field, but the acoustic attenuation was found to be very high due to the multiple reflections produced at the interfaces between the layers. This latter phenomenon has been calculated theoretically. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.

The compressive behaviour of finite unidirectional composites with a region of misaligned reinforcement is investigated via finite element analyses. Models with and without fibre bending stiffness are compared, confirming that compressive strength is accurately predicted without modelling fibre bending stiffness for real composite components which typically have waviness defects of several millimetres wavelength. Various defect parameters are investigated. Results confirm the well-known sensitivity of compressive strength to misalignment angle, and also show that compressive strength falls rapidly with the proportion of laminate width covered by the wavy region. A simple empirical equation is proposed to model the effect of a single patch of waviness in finite specimens. Other parameters such as length and position of the wavy region are found to have a smaller effect on compressive strength. The modelling approach is finally adapted to model distributed waviness and thus determine the compressive strength of composites with realistic waviness defects. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. A comparative analysis on the intron sequence oligonucleotide usages in two sets of yeast genes with higher and lower transcription frequencies, respectively, has shown that the intron sequence structures of the two sets of genes are different. There are more potential binding sites for transcription factors in the introns of the genes with high transcription frequencies. So it is speculated that introns regulate the transcription of genes. But more evidences are needed to favor this speculation. The detailed comparative analyses on the distribution ( length and position) of introns and exons in the two sets of gene sequences also show that there is an obvious boundary between the lengths of the two sets of introns. There is no boundary between the lengths of the two sets of exons, although the means of their lengths are of discrepancy. The situation of the gene lengths ( length of intron and exon) is similar to exon lengths. As far as the relative position, the introns in two sets of genes all have a bias toward the 5' ends of genes. But as the actual position is considered, more introns in high transcription genes have a tendency to be located toward the 5' ends of genes, some even located at 5'-UTR. These results suggest that the gene transcription rates are related to the length of intron, but not to the lengths of exons and genes sequences. The positions of introns may also influence the transcription rates. The transcriptional regulation of introns may be correlative with the transcriptional regulation of the upstream of genes, or be its continuous action.

This paper reports on the use of a parallelised Model Predictive Control, Sequential Monte Carlo algorithm for solving the problem of conflict resolution and aircraft trajectory control in air traffic management specifically around the terminal manoeuvring area of an airport. The target problem is nonlinear, highly constrained, non-convex and uses a single decision-maker with multiple aircraft. The implementation includes a spatio-temporal wind model and rolling window simulations for realistic ongoing scenarios. The method is capable of handling arriving and departing aircraft simultaneously including some with very low fuel remaining. A novel flow field is proposed to smooth the approach trajectories for arriving aircraft and all trajectories are planned in three dimensions. Massive parallelisation of the algorithm allows solution speeds to approach those required for real-time use.

Onychostoma virgulatum, new species, is described from the Qiupu River, a tributary on the Southern bank of the lower Yangtze River at Shitai County, southern Anhui Province, South China. It shares with O. fusiforme and O. meridionale the presence of a longitudinal dark brown stripe extending along the lateral line, a character separating them from all other congeners of the moderate-mouth group diagnosed by having a slightly arched or nearly transverse mouth opening (with the extremities slightly curved posteriorly), its width being equal to or slightly less than the width of head at this same point, and a short postlabial groove extending along half of the length of the lateral margin of the lower jaw. Onychostoma virgulatum differs from both in the presence of two pairs of barbels in adults, from O. fusiforme in the body depth, caudal-peduncle depth, and position of pelvic and anal fins, and from O. meridionale in the structure of the last simple dorsal-fin ray.
