Advanced doping technologies are key for the continued scaling of semiconductor devices and the maintenance of device performance beyond the 14 nm technology node. Due to limitations of conventional ion-beam implantation with thin body and 3D device geometries, techniques which allow precise control over dopant diffusion and concentration, in addition to excellent conformality on 3D device surfaces, are required. Spin-on doping has shown promise as a conventional technique for doping new materials, particularly through application with other dopant methods, but may not be suitable for conformal doping of nanostructures. Additionally, residues remain after most spin-on-doping processes which are often difficult to remove. In-situ doping of nanostructures is especially common for bottom-up grown nanostructures but problems associated with concentration gradients and morphology changes are commonly experienced. Monolayer doping (MLD) has been shown to satisfy the requirements for extended defect-free, conformal and controllable doping on many materials ranging from traditional silicon and germanium devices to emerging replacement materials such as III-V compounds but challenges still remain, especially with regard to metrology and surface chemistry at such small feature sizes. This article summarises and critically assesses developments over the last number of years regarding the application of gas and solution phase techniques to dope silicon-, germanium- and III-V-based materials and nanostructures to obtain shallow diffusion depths coupled with high carrier concentrations and abrupt junctions.

Activated carbon (AC) has proved to be an effective adsorbent for the removal of an assortment of organic and inorganic pollutants from aqueous or gaseous media. However, the pursuit for more effective and cheaper AC is still very active and a diversity of textural and chemical treatments are described as a way to expand their applications. It is well known that the surface area and surface chemistry of AC strongly affect their adsorption capacity [1-3]. In particular, an increase in the nitrogen content has been related to an increase of the basic character and also to the development of the porous structure. In most published work this was achieved through an AC post treatment, including either a reaction with nitrogen containing reagents, such as ammonia, nitric acid, or a diversity of amines. However, the AC prepared directly from a nitrogen rich precursor through a physical or chemical activation is referred to as presenting the best characteristics, namely high nitrogen content, high basic character, low nitrogen leaching and also a good thermal stability [4]. To improve the AC adsorption capacities for acidic pesticide removal from the aqueous phase, we intend to improve the porous structure and introduce nitrogenated groups directly into the AC matrix, using different co-adjuvant activating agents as a nitrogen source, by chemical activation, with potassium hydroxide, of cork or poly(ethyleneterephthalate) (PET) precursors.

Different stoichiometries are observed between alpha and beta subunits of Na,K-ATPase that depend on the method employed to solubilize and purify the enzyme. It is not known whether this variability is due to loss of protein-protein association, or is a result of the replacement of essential phospholipids by detergent molecules. With the aim of understanding the effect of enzyme/surfactant ratio on both the catalytic activity and the enzyme structure, we have investigated the bulk and surface properties of the enzyme. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra, surface tension and dilatational surface elasticity results were compared with the residual ATPase activity of the Na,K-ATPase in different surfactant and protein concentrations. Na,K-ATPase in the (alpha beta)(2) form dissociated to the alpha beta form on dilution, and associated to the (alpha beta)(4) form when concentrated. These different stoichiometries have similar ATPase activities and are in equilibrium at C(12)E(8) concentrations below the CIVIC (0.053 mg mL(-1)). At detergent concentrations above the CIVIC the ATPase activity of all forms was abolished, which is concomitant with the dissociation of the a and subunits. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. Four aluminas were used as Supports for impregnation with a zirconium oxide with the aim to achieve a coating, without phase separation, between Support and modifier. The Supports were impregnated with different concentrations Of zirconium aqueous resin, obtained through the polymeric precursor method. After impregnation the samples were calcined and then characterized by XRD, which led to identification of crystalline zirconia in different concentrations from each support used. Using a simple geometric model the maximum amount Of Surface modifier Oxide required for the complete coating of a support with a layer of unit cells was estimated. According to this estimate, only the support should be identified below the limit proposed and crystalline zirconium oxide Should be identified above this limit when a complete coating is reached. The results obtained From XRD agree with the estimated values and to confirm the coating, the samples were also characterized by EDS/STEM, HRTEM, XPS, and XAS. The results showed that the zirconium oxide oil the Surface of alumina Support reached the coating in the limit of 15 Zr nm(-2), without the formation of the ZrO(2) phase. (c) 2009 Elsevier Inc. The impetus for the increasing interest in studying surface active ionic liquids (SAILs; ionic liquids with long-chain ""tails"") is the enormous potential for their applications, e.g., in nanotechnology and biomedicine. The progress in these fields rests on understanding the relationship between surfactant structure and solution properties, hence applications. This need has prompted us to extend our previous study on 1-(1-hexadecyl)-3-methylimidazolium chloride to 1-(1-alkyl)-3-methylimidazolium chlorides, with alkyl chains containing 10, 12, and 14 carbons. In addition to investigating relevant micellar properties, we have compared the solution properties of the imidazolium-based surfactants with: 1-(1-alkyl)pyridinium chlorides, and benzyl (2-acylaminoethyl)dimethylammonium chlorides. The former series carries a heterocyclic ring head-group, but does not possess a hydrogen that is as acidic as H2 of the imidazolium ring. The latter series carries an aromatic ring, a quaternary nitrogen and (a hydrogen-bond forming) amide group. The properties of the imidazolium and pyridinium surfactants were determined in the temperature range from 15 to 75 degrees C. The techniques employed were conductivity, isothermal titration calorimetry, and static light scattering. The results showed the important effects of the interactions in the interfacial region on the micellar properties over the temperature range studied. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Controlling the surface properties of nanoparticles using ionic dopants prone to be surface segregated has emerged as an interesting tool for obtaining highly selective and sensitive sensors. In this work, the surface segregation of Cd cations on SnO2 nanopowders prepared by the Pechini`s method was studied by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and specific surface area analysis. We observed that the surface chemistry modifications caused by the surface segregation of Cd and the large specific surface area were closely responsible for a rapid and regular electrical response of 5 mol% Cd-doped SnO2 films to 100 ppm propane and NO, diluted in dry air at relatively low temperature (100 degrees C). Siliceous MCM-41 samples were modified by silylation using trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS). The surface coverage of functional groups was studied systematically in this work. The role of surface silanol groups during modification was evaluated using techniques of FTIR and Si-29 CP/MAS NMR. Adsorption of water and benzene on samples of various hydrophobicities was measured and compared. It was found that the maximum degree of surface attachments of trimethylsilyl (TMS) groups was about 85%, corresponding to the density of TMS groups of 1.9 per nm(2). The degree of silylation is found to linearly increase with increasing pre-outgassing temperature prior to silylation. A few types of silanol groups exist on MCM-41 surfaces, among which both free and geminal ones are responsible for active silylation. Results of water adsorption show that aluminosilicate MCM-41 materials are more or less hydrophilic, giving a type IV isotherm, similar to that of nitrogen adsorption, whereas siliceous MCM-41 are hydrophobic, exhibiting a type V adsorption isotherm. The fully silylated Si-MCM-41 samples are more hydrophobic giving a type III adsorption isotherm. Benzene adsorption on all MCM-41 samples shows type IV isotherms regardless of the surface chemistry. Capillary condensation occurs at a higher relative pressure for the silylated MCM-41 than that for the unsilylated sample, though the pore diameter was found reduced markedly by silylation. This is thought attributed to the diffusion constriction posed by the attached TMS groups. The results show that the surface chemistry plays an important role in water adsorption, whereas benzene adsorption is predominantly determined by the pore geometry of MCM-41.

The interaction between a hydrophobically modified 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-N-tetradecyl-pyridyl) porphyrin and three phospholipids: two negatively charged, DMPA (the sodium salt of dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-phosphatidyl acid) and DMPG (the sodium salt of 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-[phospho-rac-(1-glycerol)]) and a zwitterionic DMPC (dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-phosphatidylcholine), were studied by means of surface pressure isotherms and spectroscopic methods. The interaction results in partial or total metallation of the porphyrin with zinc ions in the presence of negatively charged phospholipids, as attested by UV-vis and luminescence spectroscopy of the transferred films. In the presence of the zwitterionic phospholipid no insertion of zinc ion in the porphyrin ring is detected. These results are relevant for the understanding of photosensitizer-lipid-carrier binding for use in photodynamic therapy. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro osteogenic potential of subcultured human osteoblastic cells derived from alveolar bone on a titanium (Ti) surface produced by an anodized alkali treatment (BSP-AK). Primary osteoblastic cells were subcultured on BSP-AK and machined Ti discs (control) and grown for periods of up to 21 days under osteogenic conditions. Morphologic and biochemical methods were used to assess important parameters of in vitro bone-like tissue formation. Although no major differences were observed between the BSP-AK and the control Ti surface in terms of cell attachment and mineralized matrix formation, a significant increase in cell population, ALP activity, and collagen content was detected in cultures on BSP-AK surface. Our results demonstrate that human osteoblastic cells are sensitive to the BSP-AK-modified Ti surface during the transitional stage between the end of the proliferative phase and the onset of the differentiation /matrix maturation ones. Together with the good mechanical properties exhibited by the Ca- and P- coating, our findings suggest that BSP-AK treatment could be useful for the development of a new surface for dental and orthopedic implants. Nanotechnology is an important emerging industry with a projected annual market of around one trillion dollars by 2015. It involves the control of atoms and molecules to create new materials with a variety of useful functions. Although there are advantages on the utilization of these nano-scale materials, questions related with its impact over the environment and human health must be addressed too, so that potential risks can be limited at early stages of development. At this time, occupational health risks associated with manufacturing and use of nanoparticles are not yet clearly understood. However, workers may be exposed to nanoparticles through inhalation at levels that can greatly exceed ambient concentrations. Current workplace exposure limits are based on particle mass, but this criteria could not be adequate in this case as nanoparticles are characterized by very large surface area, which has been pointed out as the distinctive characteristic that could even turn out an inert substance into another substance exhibiting very different interactions with biological fluids and cells. Therefore, it seems that, when assessing human exposure based on the mass concentration of particles, which is widely adopted for particles over 1 μm, would not work in this particular case. In fact, nanoparticles have far more surface area for the equivalent mass of larger particles, which increases the chance they may react with body tissues. Thus, it has been claimed that surface area should be used for nanoparticle exposure and dosing. As a result, assessing exposure based on the measurement of particle surface area is of increasing interest. It is well known that lung deposition is the most efficient way for airborne particles to enter the body and cause adverse health effects. If nanoparticles can deposit in the lung and remain there, have an active surface chemistry and interact with the body, then, there is potential for exposure. It was showed that surface area plays an important role in the toxicity of nanoparticles and this is the metric that best correlates with particle-induced adverse health effects. The potential for adverse health effects seems to be directly proportional to particle surface area. The objective of the study is to identify and validate methods and tools for measuring nanoparticles during production, manipulation and use of nanomaterials.

Cell surface receptors bind ligands expressed on other cells (in trans) in order to communicate with neighboring cells. However, an increasing number of cell surface receptors are found to also interact with ligands expressed on the same cell (in cis). These observations raise questions regarding the biological role of such cis interactions. Specifically, it is important to know whether cis and trans binding have distinct functional effects and, if so, how a single cell discriminates between interactions in cis versus trans. Further, what are the structural features that allow certain cell surface receptors to engage ligand both on the same as well as on an apposed cell membrane? Here, we summarize known examples of receptors that display cis-trans binding and discuss the emerging diversity of biological roles played by these unconventional two-way interactions, along with their structural basis.

It is now well accepted that cellular responses to materials in a biological medium reflect greatly the adsorbed biomolecular layer, rather than the material itself. Here, we study by molecular dynamics simulations the competitive protein adsorption on a surface (Vroman effect), i.e. the non-monotonic behavior of the amount of protein adsorbed on a surface in contact with plasma as functions of contact time and plasma concentration. We find a complex behavior, with regimes during which small and large proteins are not necessarily competing between them, but are both competing with others in solution ("cooperative" adsorption). We show how the Vroman effect can be understood, controlled and inverted.

Aggregates of oxygen vacancies (F centers) represent a particular form of point defects in ionic crystals. In this study we have considered the combination of two oxygen vacancies, the M center, in the bulk and on the surface of MgO by means of cluster model calculations. Both neutral and charged forms of the defect M and M+ have been taken into account. The ground state of the M center is characterized by the presence of two doubly occupied impurity levels in the gap of the material; in M+ centers the highest level is singly occupied. For the ground-state properties we used a gradient corrected density functional theory approach. The dipole-allowed singlet-to-singlet and doublet-to-doublet electronic transitions have been determined by means of explicitly correlated multireference second-order perturbation theory calculations. These have been compared with optical transitions determined with the time-dependent density functional theory formalism. The results show that bulk M and M+ centers give rise to intense absorptions at about 4.4 and 4.0 eV, respectively. Another less intense transition at 1.3 eV has also been found for the M+ center. On the surface the transitions occur at 1.6 eV (M+) and 2 eV (M). The results are compared with recently reported electron energy loss spectroscopy spectra on MgO thin films.

Geometric parameters of binary (1:1) PdZn and PtZn alloys with CuAu-L10 structure were calculated with a density functional method. Based on the total energies, the alloys are predicted to feature equal formation energies. Calculated surface energies of PdZn and PtZn alloys show that (111) and (100) surfaces exposing stoichiometric layers are more stable than (001) and (110) surfaces comprising alternating Pd (Pt) and Zn layers. The surface energy values of alloys lie between the surface energies of the individual components, but they differ from their composition weighted averages. Compared with the pure metals, the valence d-band widths and the Pd or Pt partial densities of states at the Fermi level are dramatically reduced in PdZn and PtZn alloys. The local valence d-band density of states of Pd and Pt in the alloys resemble that of metallic Cu, suggesting that a similar catalytic performance of these systems can be related to this similarity in the local electronic structures.
