In this work a superposition technique for designing gradient coils for the purpose of magnetic resonance imaging is outlined, which uses an optimized weight function superimposed upon an initial winding similar to that obtained from the target field method to generate the final wire winding. This work builds on the preliminary work performed in Part I on designing planar insertable gradient coils for high resolution imaging. The proposed superposition method for designing gradient coils results in coil patterns with relatively low inductances and the gradient coils can be used as inserts into existing magnetic resonance imaging hardware. The new scheme has the capacity to obtain images faster with more detail due to the deliver of greater magnetic held gradients. The proposed method for designing gradient coils is compared with a variant of the state-of-the-art target field method for planar gradient coils designs, and it is shown that the weighted superposition approach outperforms the well-known the classical method.

A three-and-a-half-year-old entire male Staffordshire Bull Terrier was presented with a cough and difficulty in swallowing. Two days later the dog was re-presented and a diagnosis of tetanus was made. An abscessed canine tooth was extracted and submitted for culture. Clostridium tetani was cultured from the pulp chamber of the tooth. The dog was treated with tetanus antitoxin, antibiotics and supportive care and made a complete recovery.

An inverse methodology for the design of biologically loaded radio-frequency (RF) coils for magnetic resonance imaging applications is described. Free space time-harmonic electromagnetic Green's functions and de-emphasized B-1 target fields are used to calculate the current density on the coil cylinder. In theory, with the B-1 field de-emphasized in the middle of the RF transverse plane, the calculated current distribution can generate an internal magnetic field that can reduce the central overemphasis effect caused by field/tissue interactions at high frequencies. The current distribution of a head coil operating at 4 T (170 MHz) is calculated using an inverse methodology with de-emphasized B-1. target fields. An in-house finite-difference time-domain routine is employed to evaluate B-1 field and signal intensity inside a homogenous cylindrical phantom and then a complete human head model. A comparison with a conventional RF birdcage coil is carried out and demonstrates that this method can help in decreasing the normal bright region caused by field/tissue interactions in head images at 170 MHz and higher field strengths.

A new transceive system for chest imaging for MRI applications is presented. A focused, eight-element transceive torso phased array coil is designed to investigate transmitting a focused radiofrequency field deep within the torso and to enhance signal homogeneity in the heart region. The system is used in conjunction with the SENSE reconstruction technique to enable focused parallel imaging. A hybrid finite-difference-time-domain/method-of-moments method is used to accurately predict the radiofrequency behavior inside the human torso. The simulation results reported herein demonstrate the feasibility of the design concept, which shows that radiofrequency field focusing with SENSE reconstruction is theoretically achievable. The paper presents a method for designing circular, shielded biplanar coils that can generate any desired field. A particular feature of these coils is that the target field may be located asymmetrically within the coil. A transverse component of the magnetic field produced by the coil is made to match a prescribed target field over the surfaces of two concentric spheres (the diameter of spherical volume) that define the target field location. The paper shows winding patterns and fields for several gradient and shim coils. It examines the effect that the finite coil size has on the winding patterns, using a Fourier-transform calculation for comparison.

The microstructure of parrotfish pharyngeal teeth was examined using scanning electron microscopy to infer possible mechanical properties of the dentition with respect to their function. Parrotfish tooth enameloid is formed from fluorapatite crystals grouped into bundles. In the upper and lower pharyngeal jaw, the majority of the crystal bundles are orientated either perpendicularly or vertically to the enameloid surface. The only exception is in the trailing apical enameloid in which the majority of bundles are orientated perpendicularly or horizontally to the trailing surface. A distinct transition occurs through the middle of the apex between the leading and trailing enameloid in teeth of the lower pharyngeal jaw. This transition appears less distinct in the teeth of the upper pharyngeal jaw. Enameloid microstructure indicates that shear forces predominate at the apex of the teeth. In the remainder of the enameloid, the microstructure indicates that wear is predominant, and the shear forces are of less importance.

Radio-frequency ( RF) coils are designed such that they induce homogeneous magnetic fields within some region of interest within a magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI) scanner. Loading the scanner with a patient disrupts the homogeneity of these fields and can lead to a considerable degradation of the quality of the acquired image. In this paper, an inverse method is presented for designing RF coils, in which the presence of a load ( patient) within the MRI scanner is accounted for in the model. To approximate the finite length of the coil, a Fourier series expansion is considered for the coil current density and for the induced fields. Regularization is used to solve this ill-conditioned inverse problem for the unknown Fourier coefficients. That is, the error between the induced and homogeneous target fields is minimized along with an additional constraint, chosen in this paper to represent the curvature of the coil windings. Smooth winding patterns are obtained for both unloaded and loaded coils. RF fields with a high level of homogeneity are obtained in the unloaded case and a limit to the level of homogeneity attainable is observed in the loaded case.

Adverse effects of corticosteroids on bone metabolism raise concerns as to whether steroid treatment may influence orthodontic movement. This study examined the effect of prednisolone on orthodontic movement using an established rat model. The corticosteroid treated group (N = 6) was administered prednisolone (1 mg/kg) daily, for a 12-day induction period; the control group (N = 6) received equivalent volumes of saline. On day 12, an orthodontic appliance was placed which exerted 30 g of mesial force to the maxillary first molar. Animals were sacrificed on day 24 and tooth movement was measured. Sagittal sections of the molars were stained with haematoxylin and eosin, and for tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity. While there were no significant differences in the magnitude of tooth movement between the 2 groups, steroid-treated rats displayed significantly less root resorption on the compression side and fewer TRAP-positive cells within the PDL space on the same side. This suggests steroid treatment suppressed elastic activity.

A comparison with conventional RF birdcage coil is reported here and demonstrated that inverse-method designed coil with preemphasized B1 field can help in decreasing the notorious bright region caused by EM field/tissue interactions in the human head images at 4 T.

In this work, a new design concept in chest imaging for MRI application is presented. A focused, 8-element transceive torso phased array coil is designed to investigate transmitting focused B1 field deep within the torso to enhance signal intensity and use in conjunction with SENSE reconstruction technique. Hybrid FDTD/MOM method is used to accurately predict the RF behavior inside the human torso. The simulation results reported herein demonstrate the feasibility of the design concept which shows that B1 field focusing with SENSE reconstruction is achievable, and the 8-element transceive torso phased array coil has the advantage to be used in transmit and receive mode for optimum and fast chest imaging.
