Aim To evaluate whether observed geographical shifts in the distribution of the blue-winged macaw (Primolius maracana) are related to ongoing processes of global climate change. This species is vulnerable to extinction and has shown striking range retractions in recent decades, withdrawing broadly from southern portions of its historical distribution. Its range reduction has generally been attributed to the effects of habitat loss; however, as this species has also disappeared from large forested areas, consideration of other factors that may act in concert is merited.Location Historical distribution of the blue-winged macaw in Brazil, eastern Paraguay and northern Argentina. Methods We used a correlative approach to test a hypothesis of causation of observed shifts by reduction of habitable areas mediated by climate change. We developed models of the ecological niche requirements of the blue-winged macaw, based on point-occurrence data and climate scenarios for pre-1950 and post-1950 periods, and tested model predictivity for anticipating geographical distributions within time periods. Then we projected each model to the other time period and compared distributions predicted under both climate scenarios to assess shifts of habitable areas across decades and to evaluate an explanation for observed range retractions. Results Differences between predicted distributions of the blue-winged macaw over the twentieth century were, in general, minor and no change in suitability of landscapes was predicted across large areas of the species' original range in different time periods. No tendency towards range retraction in the south was predicted, rather conditions in the southern part of the species' range tended to show improvement for the species.Main conclusions Our test permitted elimination of climate change as a likely explanation for the observed shifts in the distribution of the blue-winged macaw, and points rather to other causal explanations (e.g. changing regional land use, emerging diseases).

Aquatic macrophyte community distribution along the eastern shoreline of the Itaipu Reservoir (one of the South America's largest impoundments) is described in relation to limnological and sedimentological factors. The central body of the reservoir is mesotrophic, while the arms (flooded influent river valleys) along the eastern shore may be oligo-mesotrophic to eutrophic, depending on time of year and sub-catchment characteristics. Macrophyte community composition and species cover were surveyed at 30 sites in four arms, in relation to sediment total P and organic matter; underwater light regime; and water total P and Kjeldahl N concentration, alkalinity, conductivity, depth and pH. Seventeen euhydrophyte and six emergent macrophyte species were recorded. Large stands of Egeria najas dominated the euhydrophyte vegetation, together with free-floating weed species (Pistia stratiotes Linn., Salvinia auriculata Aublet and Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms.). Canonical Correspondence Analysis of the data showed that two sets of variables were important predictors of aquatic macrophyte community structure. Floating macrophyte assemblage was closely related to concentration of nutrients in both water and sediment, while light penetration was the strongest predictor of submerged species occurrence. Although a large number of potential nuisance species were present, dense growths were restricted to shallower areas of the Itaipu Reservoir, causing localised problems. The possibility of increasing interference by these plants with fisheries, recreational use, transport and hydroelectricity generation suggests a need for continued monitoring of weed distribution and abundance, and investigation of appropriate management measures.

The objective of this work was to make an ethogram based on the brood care behavior of two nests of the ant Ectatomma brunneum under laboratory conditions, in order to determine the behavioral acts performed and their frequencies, comparing the results obtained with those of other species of poneromorph ants. Using the sample scanning method, activities of brood care behavior performed by workers were monitored for 150 hours, from February to August 2007. A total of 18 different behavioral acts were observed (n = 12,494). More than half of the brood care behaviors by E brunneum (52.07%) were related to care for larvae, and the same was observed by other researchers in ethograms of species of Ectatomminae and Ponerinae ants. This may be related to specific needs in this immature stage, since rills is the period when the brood receives all the food necessary to complete their development to the adult stage.

We analyze the behavior of solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations with nonlinear boundary conditions of type partial derivative u/partial derivative n + g( x, u) = 0 when the boundary of the domain varies very rapidly. We show that the limit boundary condition is given by partial derivative u/partial derivative n+gamma(x) g(x, u) = 0, where gamma(x) is a factor related to the oscillations of the boundary at point x. For the case where we have a Lipschitz deformation of the boundary,. is a bounded function and we show the convergence of the solutions in H-1 and C-alpha norms and the convergence of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linearization around the solutions. If, moreover, a solution of the limit problem is hyperbolic, then we show that the perturbed equation has one and only one solution nearby.

In this work the relationship between CO2 emissions and the soil properties of a tropical Brazilian bare soil was investigated. Carbon dioxide emissions were measured on three different days at different soil temperature and the soil moisture conditions, and the soil properties were investigated at the same points that emissions were measured. The soil CO2 emissions were correlated to carbon content, cation exchange capacity and free iron content at the 65 points studied in an area of 100 x 100 m located in southern Brazil. Photo luminescence: A probe for short, medium and long-range self-organization order in ZrTiO4 oxide
Resumo:
Photoluminescent disordered ZrTiO4 powders were obtained by the polymeric precursor soft-chemical method. This oxide system (ordered and disordered) was characterized by photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and UV vis absorption experiments. The UV absorption tail formation in the disordered oxides was related to the diminution of optical band gap. In the disordered phase, this oxide displayed broad band photoluminescence caused by change in coordination number of titanium and zirconium with oxygen atoms. The gap decreased from 3.09 eV in crystalline oxide to 2.16 eV in disordered oxide. The crystalline oxide presented an orthorhombic alpha-PbO2-type structure in which Zr4+ and Ti4+ were randomly distributed in octahedral coordination polyhedra with oxygen atoms. The amorphous-crystalline transition occurred at almost 700 degrees C, at which point the photoluminescence vanished. The Raman peak at close to 80-200 cm(-1) indicated the presence of locally ordered Ti-O-n and Zr-O-n polyhedra in disordered photoluminescent oxides. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This investigation was carried out within the Parana sedimentary basin, Brazil, involved the sampling of groundwater and air, and was realized with the purpose of evaluating the radioactivity, due to radon gas, in a thermal spa utilizing the waters from Guarani (Botucatu-Piramboia) aquifer. The results reported here provide additional information relative to that of previous studies focusing on the presence of radionuclides in the aquifer, which have mainly characterized those belonging to uranium and thorium series decay, such as the uranium isotopes (U-238 and U-234), radium isotopes (Ra-226 and Ra-228), radon daughters (Bi-214 and Pb-214) and radon (Rn-222) itself the results obtained were compared with the maximum permissible concentration limits in air and drinking water defined by international standards, such as the guidelines for drinking water quality established by the World Health Organization. The possible processes responsible for the presence of radon in the aquifer were also considered in order to evaluate the data obtained.

Photosynthetic characteristics in response to irradiance were analysed in 21 field and culture populations of thirteen freshwater red algal species applying two distinct techniques (chlorophyll fluorescence and oxygen evolution). Photosynthesis-irradiance (PI) curves indicated adaptations to low irradiances in all species analysed, essentially characterized by occurrence of photoinhibition, low values of the saturation parameter (I-k < 225 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) and compensation irradiance (I-c < 20 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) and relatively high values of the effective quantum yield of photosystem II (Delta F/F'(m) >= 45). These characteristics have been reported in freshwater red algae and were confirmed from data based on the two techniques, indicating they are typically shade-adapted plants. on the other hand, some species (e.g. Batrachospermum delicatulum) can tolerate high irradiances (up to 2400 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)), suggesting they have mechanisms that enable them to avoid photodarnage of the photosynthetic apparatus. One of these mechanisms is the increase in dissipation of excessive energy captured by reaction centres after exposure to continuous irradiance, as reflected by the non-photochemical quenching fluorescence parameter in dark/light induction curves. Photo-inhibition occurred in all algae tested by both techniques. Light acclimation was evident particularly in field populations, as revealed by lower values of the saturation parameter (Ik) and the compensation irradiance (I-c) and higher values of Delta F/F'(m) in algae under low irradiances (shaded or heavily shaded stream segments), and vice-versa. Forms living within the boundary layer (e.g. crusts), in a region of reduced current velocity, tended to be more shade-adapted than semi-erect plants (e.g. non-mucilaginous or mucilaginous filaments), as indicated by highest values of photosynthetic efficiency (alpha = 0.31) and effective quantum yield (Delta F/F'(m) = 0.88) under natural conditions. Higher photo- synthetic rates (P-max) for the same species or population were observed under culture than field conditions when measured with the oxygen evolution technique, whereas the opposite trend was observed using chlorophyll fluorescence. The architecture and musculotopic organization of the facial motor nucleus in the Cebus apella monkey (a New World primate) were investigated using histological techniques and a multiple labelling strategy, in which horseradish peroxidase-conjugated neuroanatomical tracers (CTB-HRP and WGA-HRP) and fluorescent tracers were injected into individual facial muscles. The facial motor nucleus was formed by multipolar motoneurons and had an ovoid shape, with its rostrocaudal axis measuring on average 1875 mum. We divided the nucleus into four different subnuclei: medial, intermediate, dorsal and lateral. Retrograde labelling patterns revealed that individual muscles were innervated by longitudinal functional columns of motoneurons. The columns of the orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus, orbicularis oris, auricularis superior, buccinator and platysma muscles were located in the dorsal, intermediate, lateral, medial, lateral and intermediate subnuclei, respectively. However, the motoneuron columns of the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle and frontalis muscle could not be associated with a specific subnucleus. The present results confirm previous studies regarding the musculotopic organization of the facial motor nucleus. However, we observed some particularities in terms of the relative size of each column in C. apella, which might be related to the functional and behavioral importance of each muscle in the particular context of this primate.
