A new series of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type luminescent mesogens carrying 2-methoxy-3-cyanopyridine as a central core linked with variable alkoxy chain lengths (m = 6 and 8) as terminal substituents was synthesized and characterized using spectral methods. The newly synthesized molecules were subjected to single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), and fluorescence emission studies in order to ascertain their mesogenic and photophysical properties. The SCXRD data on 4a and 4b reveal that the presence of short intermolecular contacts, viz. C-H center dot center dot center dot N, C-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot pi, and pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions, is responsible for their crystal packing. The measured torsion angle values indicate that molecules possess distorted non-planar structure. The DSC, POM, and PXRD studies confirm that all the molecules show thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour and exhibit rectangular columnar phase. Further, their UV-visible and fluorescence spectral studies reveal that the target molecules are luminescent displaying a strong absorption band in the range of 335-340 nm and a blue fluorescence emission band in the range of 395-425 nm (both in solution and film state) with good fluorescence quantum yields (10-49 %).

Two new 2-(2-aminophenyl)benzimidazole-based HSO4- ion selective receptors, 6-(4-nitrophenyl)-5,6-dihydrobenzo4,5]imidazo1,2-c]quinazoline (L1H) and 6-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5,6-dihydrobenzo4,5]imidazo1,2-c] quinazoline (L2H), and their 1 : 1 molecular complexes with HSO4- were prepared in a facile synthetic method and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques along with the detailed structural analysis of L1H by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Both receptors (L1H and L2H) behave as highly selective chemosensor for HSO4- ions at biological pH in ethanol-water HEPES buffer (1/5) (v/v) medium over other anions such as F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, AcO-, H2PO4-, N-3(-) and ClO4-. Theoretical and experimental studies showed that the emission efficiency of the receptors (L1H and L2H) was tuned successfully through single point to ratiometric detection by employing the substituent effects. Using 3 sigma method the LOD for HSO4- ions were found to be 18.08 nM and 14.11 nM for L1H and L2H, respectively, within a very short responsive time (15-20 s) in 100 mM HEPES buffer (ethanol-water: 1/5, v/v). Comparison of the utility of the probes (L1H and L2H) as biomarkers for the detection of intracellular HSO4- ions concentrations under a fluorescence microscope has also been included and both probes showed no cytotoxic effect.

We report the single crystal growth of antimony doped Fe1+yTe and Fe1+yTe0.5Se0.5 (Fe1+ySbxTe1-x (x=0, 2%, 5%) and Fe1+yTe0.49Se0.49Sb0.02) by a modified horizontal Bridgman method. Growth parameters are optimized to obtain high quality single crystals. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at T-N = 62.2 K which is a first order transition, shifts to lower temperature on doping in Fe1+yTe. Alternately when the chalcogen site of the ternary compound Fe1+yTe0.5Se0.5 is doped with Sb, superconductivity is preserved albeit the superconducting transition temperature (T-C) falls slightly and a concomitant reduction occurs in superconducting volume fraction. 2-Phenylthiazolin-5-one (5, a thioazlactone) condenses with various aldehydes in the presence of the mild base Mn(II) acetate as catalyst in CH2Cl2 solution. This leads to the corresponding Erlenmeyer reaction products (6) in excellent yields in the case of aromatic aldehydes and moderate yields in others. The mildness of the reaction conditions is apparently enabled by the aromaticity of the (putative) intermediate thiazolone anion. The structure and stereochemistry (Z) of the product derived from i-BuCHO was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. This study overcomes key limitations of the classical Erlenmeyer synthesis and also introduces the relatively nontoxic Mn(II) acetate as a reagent in heterocyclic chemistry.

New anti-tubercular agents, imidazo1,2-a]pyridine-2-carboxamide derivatives (5a-q) have been designed and synthesized. The structural considerations of the designed molecules were further supported by the docking study with a long-chain enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (InhA). The chemical structures of the new compounds were characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, HRMS and elemental analysis. In addition, single crystal X-ray diffraction has also been recorded for compound 5f. Compounds were evaluated in vitro against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv, and cytotoxicity against HEK-293T cell line. Amongst the tested compounds 5j, 5l and 5q were emerged as good anti-tubercular agents with low cytotoxicity. The structure-anti TB activity relationship of these derivatives was explained by molecular docking. (C) 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

The synthesis of the heterobinuclear copper-zinc complex CuZn(bz)(3)(bpy)(2)]ClO4 (bz = benzoate) from benzoic acid and bipyridine is described. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the heterobinuclear complex reveals the geometry of the benzoato bridged Cu(II)-Zn(II) centre. The copper or zinc atom is pentacoordinate, with two oxygen atoms from bridging benzoato groups and two nitrogen atoms from one bipyridine forming an approximate plane and a bridging oxygen atom from a monodentate benzoate group. The Cu-Zn distance is 3.345 angstrom. The complex is normal paramagnetic having mu(eff) value equal to 1.75 BM, ruling out the possibility of Cu-Cu interaction in the structural unit. The ESR spectrum of the complex in CH3CN at RT exhibit an isotropic four line spectrum centred at g = 2.142 and hyperfine coupling constants A(av) = 63 x 10(-4) cm(-1), characteristic of a mononuclear square-pyramidal copper(II) complexes. At LNT, the complex shows an isotropic spectrum with g(parallel to) = 2.254 and g(perpendicular to) =2.071 and A(parallel to) = 160 x 10(-4) cm(-1). The Hamiltonian parameters are characteristic of distorted square pyramidal geometry. Cyclic voltammetric studies of the complex have indicated quasi-reversible behaviour in acetonitrile solution. Iron(III)-Schiff base complexes, namely, Fe(tsc-py)(2)](NO3) (1), Fe(tsc-acpy)(2)](NO3) (2) and Fe(tsc-VB6)(2)](NO3) (3), where tsc-py, tsc-acpy and tsc-VB6 are the respective Schiff bases derived from thiosemicarbazide (tsc) and pyridine-2-aldehyde (tsc-py), 2-acetyl pyridine (tsc-acpy) and vitamin B-6 (pyridoxal, tsc-VB6), have been prepared, structurally characterized and their photocytotoxicity studied in cancer HeLa cells. The single crystal X-ray structures of the complexes 1 and 2 show a distorted octahedral geometry formed by the FeN4S2 core. The low-spin and 1 : 1 electrolytic complexes display a broad absorption band in the visible region. Complexes 1 and 2, without any VB6 moiety are not cytotoxic under light or dark conditions. Complex 3 is significantly photocytotoxic under visible light of 400-700 nm giving an IC50 value of 22.5 mu M in HeLa cells with no dark toxicity (IC50 > 100 mu M). The photo-induced cell death is attributable to apoptotic pathways involving photo-assisted generation of intracellular ROS. The observed photocytotoxicity of complex 3 could be the result of its better photosensitizing property combined with its enhanced uptake into cancer cells via a VB6 transporting membrane carrier (VTC) mediated diffusion pathway due to the presence of the VB6 moiety compared to the two non-vitamin B-6 analogues, complexes 1 and 2.

We report high-pressure Raman-scattering studies on single-crystal ReO3 up to 26.9 GPa at room temperature, complemented by first-principles density functional calculations to assign the modes and to develop understanding of the subtle features of the low-pressure phase transition. The pressure (P) dependence of phonon frequencies (omega) reveals three phase transitions at 0.6, 3, and 12.5 GPa with characteristic splitting and changes in the slope of omega(P). Our first-principles theoretical analysis confirms the role of the rotational modes of ReO6, M-3, to the lowest pressure structural transition, and shows that the transition from the Pm3m to the Im3 structure is a weak first-order transition, originating from the strong anharmonic coupling of the M-3 modes with the acoustic modes (strain).

The magnetic structures and the magnetic phase transitions in the Mn-doped orthoferrite TbFeO3 studied using neutron powder diffraction are reported. Magnetic phase transitions are identified at T-N(Fe/Mn) approximate to 295K where a paramagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice, T-SR(Fe/Mn) approximate to 26K where a spin-reorientation transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice and T-N(R) approximate to 2K where Tb-ordering starts to manifest. At 295 K, the magnetic structure of the Fe/Mn sublattice in TbFe0.5Mn0.5O3 belongs to the irreducible representation Gamma(4) (G(x)A(y)F(z) or Pb'n'm). A mixed-domain structure of (Gamma(1) + Gamma(4)) is found at 250K which remains stable down to the spin re-orientation transition at T-SR(Fe/Mn) approximate to 26K. Below 26K and above 250 K, the majority phase (>80%) is that of Gamma(4). Below 10K the high-temperature phase Gamma(4) remains stable till 2K. At 2 K, Tb develops a magnetic moment value of 0.6(2) mu(B)/f.u. and orders long-range in F-z compatible with the Gamma(4) representation. Our study confirms the magnetic phase transitions reported already in a single crystal of TbFe0.5Mn0.5O3 and, in addition, reveals the presence of mixed magnetic domains. The ratio of these magnetic domains as a function of temperature is estimated from Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data. Indications of short-range magnetic correlations are present in the low-Q region of the neutron diffraction patterns at T < T-SR(Fe/Mn). These results should motivate further experimental work devoted to measure electric polarization and magnetocapacitance of TbFe0.5Mn0.5O3. (C) 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.

ZnO nanotetrapods with hexagonal crown were synthesized on a silicon wafer by vapor transport process at a low temperature of 630 °C and normal pressure without the presence of catalysts. The results demonstrated that the as-synthesized products with slender legs and regular hexagonal crown are single crystal with wurtzite structure and preferentially grow up along 001 direction. Photoluminescence spectra revealed that the green emission originated from oxygen vacancies overwhelmed that of the near-band-edge ultraviolet peak, which suggests the peculiar-shaped nanotetrapods may have potential applications in multichannel nano-optoelectronic devices.

Alumina ceramic, Al2O3, presents a challenge to laser micro-structuring due to its neglible linear absorption coefficient in the optical region coupled with its physical properties such as extremely high melting point and high thermal conductivity. In this work, we demonstrate clean micro-structuring of alumina using NIR (λ=775 nm) ultrafast optical pulses with 180 fs duration at 1kHz repetition rate. Sub-picosecond pulses can minimise thermal effects along with collateral damage when processing conditions are optimised, consequently, observed edge quality is excellent in this regime. We present results of changing micro-structure and morphology during ultrafast processing along with measured ablation rates and characteristics of developing surface relief. Initial crystalline phase (alpha Al2O3) is unaltered by femtosecond processing. Multi-pulse ablation threshold fluence Fth, ∼ 1.1 Jcm-2 and at low fluence ∼ 3 Jcm -2, independent of machined depth, there appears to remain a ∼ 2 μm thick rapidly re-melted layer. On the other hand, micro-structuring at high fluence F ∼ 21 Jcm-2 shows no evidence of melting and the machined surface is covered with a fine layer of debris, loosely attached. The nature of debris produced by femtosecond ablation has been investigated and consists mainly of alumina nanoparticles with diameters from 20 nm to 1 micron with average diameter ∼ 300 nm. Electron diffraction shows these particles to be essentially single crystal in nature. By developing a holographic technique, we have demonstrated periodic micrometer level structuring on polished samples of this extremely hard material.
