The authors studied gross and histological abnormalities of placentae from 566 newborns, grouped according to birth and gestational age. The relation of hemorragic abnormalities, infections of membranes and placental tissue, chronic infections, calcifications, hydropic degeneration of villi, chorangioma, cysts, vascular lesions (endarteritis) with newborn weight, length of gestation and intrauterine growth retardation were determined. We concluded that lesions due to disturbances of placental blood flow were significantly more frequent in placentae from term newborns small for gestational age; villi hydropic degenerations were more frequent in placentae of pre-term newborns appropriate for gestational age. Chronic infections had a tendency to be greater in placentae from infants with diminished intrauterine growth. Term newborns small for gestational age had greater proportions of placental abnormalities than the other groups.

Patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) may develop a wasting syndrome, termed cardiac cachexia. This condition should be diagnosed when weight loss of more than 7.5% of the premorbid normal weight occurs over a time period of more than 6 months. Although the pathophysiologic causes of body wasting in patients with CHF remain unclear, studies have suggested that reduction of the dietary ingestion, intestinal malabsorption of nutrients, increased resting metabolic rates, and humoral neuroendocrine and immunologic abnormalities may play a role. The development of cachexia in the patients with CHF results in clinical symptoms, adverse consequences on the heart, and impaired survival.

Clinical studies on nasal topical medications require the standardization of nasosinusal normality in order to establish control groups through a specific evaluation of the upper airways. Aim: to standardize the evaluation of candidates for control groups in clinical studies on nasal topical medications. Material and Methods: healthy male volunteers of 18 to 50 years of age, asymptomatic from the nasosinusal standpoint were subjected to a sequential and excluding assessment made up of clinical evaluation, immediate hypersensitivity skin test, saccharin test, flexible nasofibroscopy and nasal cytology. Study design: Crosssectional contemporary cohort. Results: Of the 33 people originally enrolled, 14 (42.4%) were excluded for clinical reasons. Of the 19 remaining, 2 (10.5%) had atopy diagnosed in the skin test and were excluded. 17 were tested with saccharin and presented normal mucociliary clearance. Evaluation by nasal endoscopy showed abnormality in 2 cases (11.8%) and these were excluded. The remaining 15 were submitted to nasal cytology, which proved normal, representing 45.5% of those initially included. Conclusion: The proposed protocol for sequential and excluding evaluation was effective in defining candidates for the establishment of control groups in clinical studies on nasal topical medications. © Revista Brasileira de Otorrinolaringologia. The chronic kidney disease (CKD) it is characterized by irreversible structural lesions that can develop progressively for uremia and chronic renal failure (CRF). In the CRF it happens the incapacity of executing the functions of maintenance of the electrolyte balance and acid-base, catabolitos excretion and hormonal regulation appropriately. When the mechanism basic physiopathology of the renal upset is analyzed, it is observed that present factors, predispose to the unbalance oxidative. Most of the time, the renal patient comes badly nurtured, with lack in reservations of vitamins and minerals, what reduces the antioxidant defense mechanisms, what favors the installation of the renal oxidative stress, with the formation of species you reactivate of reactive oxygen species (ROS), substances these potentially harmful to the organism. The reduction of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in the evolution of CKD in dogs and cats is a component for the installation of the renal oxidative stress. The ROS possesses important action in the kidneys, and these substances are highly reactivate, and when presents in excess damage lipids, proteins, DNA and carbohydrate, driving functional and structural abnormalities taking the cellular apoptosis and necrosis. Against the harmful potential action of these substances you reactivate, she becomes fundamental a delicate control of his production and consumption in the half intracellular, in other words, a balance of his concentration intra and extracellular. That is possible due to the activity of the antioxidants. Like this, to present literature revision had as objective describes the participation of the oxidative stress in CRF, as well as the mechanisms defenses against the harmful action of those substances.

Background: To investigate the effect of lisinopril on cardiac remodeling induced by smoking. Material/Methods: Rats were allocated into 3 groups: group CON (n=8): control; group CSE (n=8): cigarette smoke exposure; group CSE-LIS (n=8): exposed to tobacco smoke and treated with lisinopril. Results: After 2 months, the tail systolic pressure was lower in CSE-LIS (CON=116 ±27 mm Hg, CSE=126±16, CSE-LIS=89±12; P<.001). CSE animals showed higher left ventricular systolic diameter (CON=8.25±2.16 mm/kg, CSE=11.5±1.3, CSE-LIS=9.27±2.00; P=.009) and myocyte cross-sectional area (CON=245±8 μm2, CSE=260±17, CSE-LIS=238±12; P=.01) than CON and CSE-LIS. The ejection fraction (CON =0.91±0.02, CSE=0.86±0.02, CSE-LIS=0.92±0.03; P=.002) and fractional shortening (CON=55.7±4.41%, CSE=48.7±3.43, CSE-LI=58.2±7.63; P=.006) were lower in CSE group than CON and CSE-LIS. CSE and CSE-LIS animals showed higher collagen amounts (CON=3.49±0.95%, CSE= 5.01±1.58, CSE-LIS=5.27±0.62; P=.009) than CON. CON group showed a higher connexin 43 amount in the intercalated disc (CON=3.70±0.38, CSE=2.13±0.53; CSE-LIS=2.17±0.73; P=.004) than CSE and CSE-LIS. There were no differences in IFN-g or TNF-a cardiac levels among the groups. Conclusions: Lisinopril attenuated both morphologic and functional abnormalities induced by exposure to tobacco smoke. In addition, this effect was associated with diminished blood pressure, but not alterations in connexin 43 distribution, cytokine production or collagen amount. © Med Sci Monit, 2010.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common in sports. Studies investigating injury mechanisms have demonstrated that most injuries arise from landing tasks. Despite the demonstration of differences between male and female kinematics, there are no studies showing how males behave during different landing tasks. The objective of this study was to compare the angular and temporal kinematics of the lower limbs between two different landing tasks. Double leg and single leg landings were recorded in the frontal and sagittal plane in 15 male volleyball athletes by videogrammetry. Reduced hip and knee flexion and increased knee valgus were observed in the single leg landing task compared to the double leg landing task. No significant difference in landing time was observed between the two tasks. In conclusion, the results support the premise that lower limb kinematics change according to the task performed. Further studies are necessary to explore the impact of these kinematic differences on knee loading and to relate them to ACL injury mechanisms in men.

Over the last decade, several studies were conducted on the gastrointestinal changes associated to chronic heart failure. This article presents a literature review on the physiopathology and clinical consequences of pathological digestive changes of heart failure patients. Structural and functional abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract, such as edema of absorptive mucosa and intestinal bacterial overgrowth, have been leading to serious clinical consequences. Some of these consequences are cardiac cachexia, systemic inflammatory activation and anemia. These conditions, alone or in combination, may lead to worsening of the pre-existing ventricular dysfunction. Although currently there is no therapy specifically earmarked for gastrointestinal changes associated to heart failure, the understanding of digestive abnormalities is germane for the prevention and management of systemic consequences.

The palatoplasty is a correction surgery to restore the isolation between the oral and nasal cavity, avoid breath of food. There are many techniques to repair palatal defects, and the most used is mucoperiosteal flap. Grafts and prothesis, can be used too. Scientific works with Natural Latex Biomembrane with 0,1% Polylisine reveals properties like biocompatibility, improve and accelerate the cicatricial process, the stimulation of new vessels and organized tissue growth in different organs. Seven dogs were arranged in two groups and were submitted to experimental hard palate cleft. Five dogs received palatal repair with the natural latex biomembrane with 0,1% polylisine. Two animals did not receive any repair (control group) and the defect healing by second intention. After surgery, the groups were observed macroscopically and clinically to evaluate the results. The healling of cleft palate of group I was faster than control group, and this fact suggests that the biomembrane is an accelerator factor for cicatricial process.

Objective: Sleep spindles have been suggested as surrogates of thalamo-cortical activity. Internal frequency modulation within a spindle's time frame has been demonstrated in healthy subjects, showing that spindles tend to decelerate their frequency before termination. We investigated internal frequency modulation of slow and fast spindles according to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) severity and brain topography. Methods: Seven non-OSA subjects and 21 patients with OSA contributed with 30 min of Non-REM sleep stage 2, subjected to a Matching pursuit procedure with Gabor chirplet functions for automatic detection of sleep spindles and quantification of sleep spindle internal frequency modulation (chirp rate). Results: Moderate OSA patients showed an inferior percentage of slow spindles with deceleration when compared to Mild and Non-OSA groups in frontal and parietal regions. In parietal regions, the percentage of slow spindles with deceleration was negatively correlated with global apnea-hypopnea index (r s = -0.519, p = 0.005). Discussion: Loss of physiological sleep spindle deceleration may either represent a disruption of thalamo-cortical loops generating spindle oscillations or some compensatory mechanism, an interesting venue for future research in the context of cognitive dysfunction in OSA. Significance: Quantification of internal frequency modulation (chirp rate) is proposed as a promising approach to advance description of sleep spindle dynamics in brain pathology. © 2013 International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology.

Subluxation of the proximal interphalangeal joint is a rare and little studied condition in horses. We describe the case of a 12-year-old mare with bilateral dorsal subluxation of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the hind feet. Tenectomy of the medial digital flexor was performed in both limbs, and the patient showed signs of recovery within 14 days. Goniometry of the proximal interphalangeal joints 10 months after surgery showed diminution of 5° for the proximal interphalangeal axis of the left hind limb. However, no change was found for the joint angle of the right limb. Even so, the patient's gait and radiographic results were normal, and clinical abnormalities such as joint clicking and swelling were no longer observed. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.
