Formation and characterization of carbon-radical precursors in char steam gasification

Highly reactive radicals play an important role in high-temperature gasification processes. However, the effect of radicals on gasification has not been systematically investigated. In the present study, the formation of carbon-radical precursors using atomic radicals such as OH, O, and H and molecules such as H₂ and O₂ was characterized, and the effect of the precursors on the adsorption step of steam char gasification was studied using quantum chemistry methods. The results revealed that the radicals can be chemisorbed exothermically on char active sites, and the following order of reactivity was observed: O > H₂ > H > OH > O ₂. Moreover, hydrogen bonds are formed between steam molecules and carbon-radical complexes. Steam molecule adsorption onto carbon-O and carbon-OH complexes is easier than adsorption onto clean carbon surfaces. Alternatively, adsorption on carbon-O₂, carbon-H₂, and carbon-H complexes is at the same level with that of clean carbon surfaces; thus, OH and O radicals accelerate the physical adsorption of steam onto the char surface, H radical and O₂ and H₂ molecules do not have a significant effect on adsorption. © 2010 American Chemical Society.

European Union Non-Discrimination Law: Comparative Perspectives on Multidimensional Equality Law

EU equality law is multidimensional in being based on different rationales and concepts. Consequently, the concept of discrimination has become fragmented, with different instruments envisaging different scopes of protection. This raises questions as to the ability of EU law to address the situation of persons excluded on a number of grounds. This edited collection addresses the increasing complexity of European Equality Law from jurisprudential, sociological and political science perspectives. Internationally renowned researchers from Scandinavian, Continental and Central European countries and Britain analyse consequences of multiplying discrimination grounds within EU equality law, considering its multidimensionality and intersectionality. The contributors to the volume theorise the move from formal to substantive equality law and its interrelation to new forms of governance, demonstrating the specific combination of non-discrimination law with welfare state models which reveal the global implications of the European Union. The book will be of interest to academics and policy makers all over the world, in particular to those researching and studying law, political sciences and sociology with an interest in human rights, non discrimination law, contract and employment law or European studies.

The Politics of Observation:Radical Psychiatry and Social Documentary

How did the counter-cultural aims of Radical Psychiatry coincide with those of documentary filmmaking in the 1960s? Where the forms and structures of new approaches to the documentary necessarily complicit in promoting the clinical and anti-clinical practices, and wider political agenda, of Radical Psychiatry? How did the documentary deal with the ethical, aesthetic, and audience-related issues associated with filming personalities and environments associated with Radical Psychiatry? How did Radical Psychiatry and the documentary shape postwar discourses on trauma, especially within conflict and post-conflict (PTSD) contexts? What is the legacy of Radical Pschiatry today, and how has it been explored by contemporary documentray film?

This article addresses these question by examining a range of documentaries dealing with the radical and 'anti-psychiatric' ideas and methods of figures such as R.D.Laing, David Cooper, Jan Bastiaans, Timothy Leary, and Franco Basaglia. Films analysed include Peter Robinson's Asylum (1972) and Psychiatry and Violence (1973); Ah, Sunflower (Klinkert and Sinclair, 1967); Anatomy of Violence (Davis, 1967); Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out (Robin Clarke, 1967), W. R. - Mysteries of the Organism (Makavejev, 1971); Raymond Depardon's San Clemente (1980) and Urgences (1988); and Louis van Gasteren's trilogy Now Do You Get it Why I am Crying (1969), The Price of Survival (2003), and There is No Plane to Zagreb (2012). 
The article concludes with a discussion of Nicolas Philibert's Every Little Thing (1997) within the context of the French documentary tradition and the film's more immediate subject - the famous clinic at La Borde established by Jean Oury, and associated with the methods and theories of figures such as Jacques
 Lacan, Francesc Tosquelles, Franz Fanon, and Félix Guattari.

Inequality, state ownership and the European Union: How economic context and economic ideology shape support for the European Union

This article investigates the extent to which economic ideology affects people's support for European Union integration and how this is conditioned by economic context. We argue that people on the economic left who live in a country with conditions of high income inequality and little state ownership will support European integration, because more integration would move public policy in a left-wing direction. By contrast, people on the left who live in a country with conditions of low income inequality and widespread public ownership are likely to be eurosceptic, as further integration would result in a more right-wing public policy. We empirically confirm our hypotheses and discuss the implications for European Union democracy.

Photoelectrochemistry with quinone radical anions - Photoassisted reduction of halobenzenes and carbonyl compounds

Photoexcited electrochemically generated quinone radical anions reduced 1,2-dibromobenzene to bromobenzene, 1,4-dibromobenzene to bromobenzene and 4-chlorobenzonitrile to benzonitrile. In the presence of anthracene, 2-bromophenyl-, 4-bromophenyl- and 4-cyanophenyl-anthracenes were formed. With acetaldehyde, acetone, acetophenone, benzaldehyde and benzophenone, the major products were the corresponding pinacols, with small amounts of the two-electron secondary alcohols. In acetonitrile as solvent, cinnamonitriles, hydrocinnamonitriles and phenylglutaronitriles were formed in addition to the alcohols. Glyoxylic acid was reduced to tartaric, glycolic and malic acids. The reduction of CO₂ was unsuccessful.

Photoelectrochemistry with quinone radical anions: Kinetics of homogeneous redox catalysis

Cyclic voltammograms of quinones were recorded in acetonitrile in the presence of various substrates: carbonyl compounds, halobenzenes, Methyl Viologen and Neutral Red. When illuminated with light of λ >410 nm, catalytic waves were observed. From the ratio of the catalysed to uncatalysed peak current, electron transfer rate constants were calculated using the working curves of Saveant and coworkers. The values of these rate constants were compared with the values obtained by Shukla and Rusling for different systems using a similar method and with quenching rate constants calculated using Rehm-Weller-Marcus theory.

Photoelectrochemistry using quinone radical anions

The photoelectrochemistry of quinone radical anions has been demonstrated qualitatively by the photoassisted reduction of methyl viologen with benzoquinone and of neutral red with chloranil. Data were then collected for the estimation of quenching rate constants using Marcus-Weller theory. Reduction potentials of seven quinones were obtained in four solvents (and two aqueous mixtures) by cyclic voltammetry. The solvent effects on these potentials were studied by fitting them to the Taft relationship. The effects of proton donors were also noted. Absorption spectra of the radical anions were measured and the solvent effects noted and commented upon. From the molar absorption coefficients of the radical anions, the mean lifetimes of the excited states were estimated. Fluorescence spectra were obtained for anthraquinone and naphthaquinone radical anions and excitation energies were calculated. These values were estimated for the other quinones. Values of redox potentials for the excited radical anions were thence obtained. The Gibbs energies of the electron transfers between the excited quinone radical anions and the various substrates were obtained and hence the Gibbs energies of activation were calculated using the Marcus equation. The quenching rate constants were calculated using the Rehm-Weller equation and plotted vs. ΔG giving a characteristic Marcus plot including some data in the inverted region. The significance of the inverted region is discussed.

The European Union funded NEOShield project: A global approach to near-Earth object impact threat mitigation

Although discussions are underway within the Action Team 14 of the United Nations COPUOS, there is currently no concerted international plan addressing the impact threat from near-Earth objects (NEOs) and how to organize, prepare and implement mitigation measures. We report on a new international project to address impact hazard mitigation issues, being the subject of a proposal submitted to the European Commission in response to the 2011 FP7 Call "Prevention of impacts from near-Earth objects on our planet". Our consortium consists of 13 research institutes, universities, and industrial partners from 6 countries and includes leading US and Russian space organizations. The primary aim of the project, NEOShield, is to investigate in detail the three most promising mitigation techniques: the kinetic impactor, blast deflection,and the gravity tractor, and devise feasible demonstration missions. Furthermore, we will investigate options for an international strategy for implementation when an actual impact threat arises. The NEOShield project was formally accepted by the European Commission on 17 November 2011 and funded with a total of 5.8 million Euros for a period of 3.5 years. The kick-off meeting took place at the DLR Institute of Planetary Research, Berlin, in January 2012. In this paper we present a brief overview of the planned scope of the project.
