This thesis deals with efficient solution of optimization problems of practical interest. The first part of the thesis deals with bin packing problems. The bin packing problem (BPP) is one of the oldest and most fundamental combinatorial optimiza- tion problems. The bin packing problem and its generalizations arise often in real-world ap- plications, from manufacturing industry, logistics and transportation of goods, and scheduling. After an introductory chapter, I will present two applications of two of the most natural extensions of the bin packing: Chapter 2 will be dedicated to an application of bin packing in two dimension to a problem of scheduling a set of computational tasks on a computer cluster, while Chapter 3 deals with the generalization of BPP in three dimensions that arise frequently in logistic and transportation, often com- plemented with additional constraints on the placement of items and characteristics of the solution, like, for example, guarantees on the stability of the items, to avoid potential damage to the transported goods, on the distribution of the total weight of the bins, and on compatibility with loading and unloading operations. The second part of the thesis, and in particular Chapter 4 considers the Trans- mission Expansion Problem (TEP), where an electrical transmission grid must be expanded so as to satisfy future energy demand at the minimum cost, while main- taining some guarantees of robustness to potential line failures. These problems are gaining importance in a world where a shift towards renewable energy can impose a significant geographical reallocation of generation capacities, resulting in the ne- cessity of expanding current power transmission grids.

When it comes to designing a structure, architects and engineers want to join forces in order to create and build the most beautiful and efficient building. From finding new shapes and forms to optimizing the stability and the resistance, there is a constant link to be made between both professions. In architecture, there has always been a particular interest in creating new shapes and types of a structure inspired by many different fields, one of them being nature itself. In engineering, the selection of optimum has always dictated the way of thinking and designing structures. This mindset led through studies to the current best practices in construction. However, both disciplines were limited by the traditional manufacturing constraints at a certain point. Over the last decades, much progress was made from a technological point of view, allowing to go beyond today's manufacturing constraints. With the emergence of Wire-and-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) combined with Algorithmic-Aided Design (AAD), architects and engineers are offered new opportunities to merge architectural beauty and structural efficiency. Both technologies allow for exploring and building unusual and complex structural shapes in addition to a reduction of costs and environmental impacts. Through this study, the author wants to make use of previously mentioned technologies and assess their potential, first to design an aesthetically appreciated tree-like column with the idea of secondly proposing a new type of standardized and optimized sandwich cross-section to the construction industry. Parametric algorithms to model the dendriform column and the new sandwich cross-section are developed and presented in detail. A catalog draft of the latter and methods to establish it are then proposed and discussed. Finally, the buckling behavior of this latter is assessed considering standard steel and WAAM material properties.

Environmental processes have been modelled for decades. However. the need for integrated assessment and modeling (IAM) has,town as the extent and severity of environmental problems in the 21st Century worsens. The scale of IAM is not restricted to the global level as in climate change models, but includes local and regional models of environmental problems. This paper discusses various definitions of IAM and identifies five different types of integration that Lire needed for the effective solution of environmental problems. The future is then depicted in the form of two brief scenarios: one optimistic and one pessimistic. The current state of IAM is then briefly reviewed. The issues of complexity and validation in IAM are recognised as more complex than in traditional disciplinary approaches. Communication is identified as a central issue both internally among team members and externally with decision-makers. stakeholders and other scientists. Finally it is concluded that the process of integrated assessment and modelling is considered as important as the product for any particular project. By learning to work together and recognise the contribution of all team members and participants, it is believed that we will have a strong scientific and social basis to address the environmental problems of the 21st Century. Introdução: Cada vez mais a Reabilitação Cardíaca (RC) tem um início precoce no tratamento e nas necessidades do paciente no sentido de promover a sua autonomia e responsabilização pela recuperação, através de uma abordagem multidisciplinar. Os programas home-based e a inclusão das tecnologias de informação e comunicação são soluções atrativas para o aumento da participação dos doentes selecionados e inclusão de grupos de doentes atualmente sub-representados. Objetivos: Sistematizar a evidência científica atual sobre a efetividade dos programas de reabilitação cardíaca home-based com controlo á distância através da aplicação de novas tecnologias, comparando-a com a reabilitação centre-based/hospital-based, ao nível da adesão e da atividade física. Métodos: Este trabalho consiste numa revisão sistemática da literatura publicada entre 2007 e 2014, através de uma pesquisa em diferentes bases de dados eletrónicas científicas (Elsevier – Science Direct, PEDro, PubMed, Scielo Portugal e B-on) com as palavras-chave: reabilitação cardíaca, home-based, centre-based, hospital-based, reabilitação exercise-based, telemonitorização, smartphone, internet, atividade física, em todas as combinações possíveis. Os estudos foram analisados independentemente por dois revisores quanto aos critérios de inclusão e qualidade dos estudos. Resultados: Dos 101 estudos identificados, apenas dez foram incluídos. Considerando a escala da PEDro, quatro estudos obtiveram um score 5, quatro, um score de 6, e 2 com um score de 7 em 10. Os estudos foram realizados em adultos com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 80 anos. Os programas de intervenção dividiram-se em planeamento de atividade física e em autogestão. Todos os programas de exercício físico conduziram a um aumento da capacidade de exercício e consequente, maior controlo de fatores de risco. Pelos níveis de adesão aos PRC home-based e pelos resultados positivos de diferentes parâmetros em relação a reabilitação centre-based/hospital-based é notável a efetividade da telemonitorização baseada em casa. Conclusão: A telemonitorização domiciliária constitui um elemento fundamental para a solução de numerosos problemas destes doentes, tornando-se em métodos simples e de fácil funcionamento para haver sucesso nas taxas de adesão. Com efeito, a utilização das tecnologias de informação e de comunicação permite uma prestação e gestão eficazes dos cuidados de saúde no domicílio.

La educación social en sus diversas acepciones (profesión, práctica educativa y estudios universitarios) ha experimentado unos importantes cambios en los últimos años. De una actividad centrada en la solución de problemas concretos dentro de un ámbito específico, se ha ido avanzando hacia la necesidad de estar capacitado para el trabajo en entornos complejos y difusos. El ejercicio de la actividad en estos entornos requiere de un posicionamiento estratégico, de una visión global más allá de un manejo de recetas cerradas y de una perspectiva ética que trascienda el simple cumplimiento de instrucciones. Por ello, capacitar al profesional para el diseño y la aplicación de las acciones socioeducativas es una temática que requiere la integración de multiplicidad de competencias para que cada intervención sea una respuesta que se adapte a la situación, a las capacidades y al contexto de la persona atendida. En el periodo de formación universitaria, el practicum es un espacio de aprendizaje privilegiado donde se ponen en juego todos los conocimientos adquiridos y sirve de trampolín para empezar a ejercer la profesión en un contexto real pero seguro, que más adelante será el escenario cotidiano de la acción profesional

After an introductory discussion emphasising the importance of electrochemistry for the so-called Green Chemical Processes, the article presents a short discussion of the classical ozone generation technologies. Next a revision of the electrochemical ozone production technology focusing on such aspects as: fundamentals, latest advances, advantages and limitations of this technology is presented. Recent results about fundamentals of electrochemical ozone production obtained in our laboratory, using different electrode materials (e.g. boron doped diamond electrodes, lead dioxide and DSAÒ-based electrodes) also are presented. Different chemical processes of interest to the solution of environmental problems involving ozone are discussed.

Ausgangspunkt der Dissertation ist ein von V. Maz'ya entwickeltes Verfahren, eine gegebene Funktion f : Rn ! R durch eine Linearkombination fh radialer glatter exponentiell fallender Basisfunktionen zu approximieren, die im Gegensatz zu den Splines lediglich eine näherungsweise Zerlegung der Eins bilden und somit ein für h ! 0 nicht konvergentes Verfahren definieren. Dieses Verfahren wurde unter dem Namen Approximate Approximations bekannt. Es zeigt sich jedoch, dass diese fehlende Konvergenz für die Praxis nicht relevant ist, da der Fehler zwischen f und der Approximation fh über gewisse Parameter unterhalb der Maschinengenauigkeit heutiger Rechner eingestellt werden kann. Darüber hinaus besitzt das Verfahren große Vorteile bei der numerischen Lösung von Cauchy-Problemen der Form Lu = f mit einem geeigneten linearen partiellen Differentialoperator L im Rn. Approximiert man die rechte Seite f durch fh, so lassen sich in vielen Fällen explizite Formeln für die entsprechenden approximativen Volumenpotentiale uh angeben, die nur noch eine eindimensionale Integration (z.B. die Errorfunktion) enthalten. Zur numerischen Lösung von Randwertproblemen ist das von Maz'ya entwickelte Verfahren bisher noch nicht genutzt worden, mit Ausnahme heuristischer bzw. experimenteller Betrachtungen zur sogenannten Randpunktmethode. Hier setzt die Dissertation ein. Auf der Grundlage radialer Basisfunktionen wird ein neues Approximationsverfahren entwickelt, welches die Vorzüge der von Maz'ya für Cauchy-Probleme entwickelten Methode auf die numerische Lösung von Randwertproblemen überträgt. Dabei werden stellvertretend das innere Dirichlet-Problem für die Laplace-Gleichung und für die Stokes-Gleichungen im R2 behandelt, wobei für jeden der einzelnen Approximationsschritte Konvergenzuntersuchungen durchgeführt und Fehlerabschätzungen angegeben werden.

The Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a new and very promising classification technique developed by Vapnik and his group at AT&T Bell Labs. This new learning algorithm can be seen as an alternative training technique for Polynomial, Radial Basis Function and Multi-Layer Perceptron classifiers. An interesting property of this approach is that it is an approximate implementation of the Structural Risk Minimization (SRM) induction principle. The derivation of Support Vector Machines, its relationship with SRM, and its geometrical insight, are discussed in this paper. Training a SVM is equivalent to solve a quadratic programming problem with linear and box constraints in a number of variables equal to the number of data points. When the number of data points exceeds few thousands the problem is very challenging, because the quadratic form is completely dense, so the memory needed to store the problem grows with the square of the number of data points. Therefore, training problems arising in some real applications with large data sets are impossible to load into memory, and cannot be solved using standard non-linear constrained optimization algorithms. We present a decomposition algorithm that can be used to train SVM's over large data sets. The main idea behind the decomposition is the iterative solution of sub-problems and the evaluation of, and also establish the stopping criteria for the algorithm. We present previous approaches, as well as results and important details of our implementation of the algorithm using a second-order variant of the Reduced Gradient Method as the solver of the sub-problems. As an application of SVM's, we present preliminary results we obtained applying SVM to the problem of detecting frontal human faces in real images.

En el sistema internacional África es un continente que todavía se encuentra jalonando en su proceso de desarrollo socioeconómico. Esquemas de cooperación norte-sur no han logrado los resultados esperados en el continente y por esta razón es necesario mirar hacía otras alternativas. Este trabajo de grado presenta un modelo de cooperación regional y de cooperación sur-sur que surge del Renacimiento Africano para responder a este dilema de la cooperación tradicional. Presenta los aspectos principales del Renacimiento Africano como la solución de problemas africanos, la recuperación del continente, el Ubuntu y el desarrollo socioeconómico en el contexto específico de la cooperación entre Sudáfrica y Burundi con el fin de comprender la totalidad de este modelo novedoso de la región.

Governments, institutions and the politics requirements, that handle the globalization and the human development based in the knowledge economy, demand changes in the pedagogical system strategies in spite of the barriers from the traditional educative system. Responding to these necessity, the Biochemistry Department belong to the Basic Sciences Institute from the Medicine Faculty in the University of Rosario, is applying a different pedagogical strategy.

In recent years nonpolynomial finite element methods have received increasing attention for the efficient solution of wave problems. As with their close cousin the method of particular solutions, high efficiency comes from using solutions to the Helmholtz equation as basis functions. We present and analyze such a method for the scattering of two-dimensional scalar waves from a polygonal domain that achieves exponential convergence purely by increasing the number of basis functions in each element. Key ingredients are the use of basis functions that capture the singularities at corners and the representation of the scattered field towards infinity by a combination of fundamental solutions. The solution is obtained by minimizing a least-squares functional, which we discretize in such a way that a matrix least-squares problem is obtained. We give computable exponential bounds on the rate of convergence of the least-squares functional that are in very good agreement with the observed numerical convergence. Challenging numerical examples, including a nonconvex polygon with several corner singularities, and a cavity domain, are solved to around 10 digits of accuracy with a few seconds of CPU time. The examples are implemented concisely with MPSpack, a MATLAB toolbox for wave computations with nonpolynomial basis functions, developed by the authors. A code example is included.

O trabalho enfoca o projeto de galpões para a criação de frangos de corte, do ponto de vista do seu desempenho térmico, nas condições climáticas brasileiras. Define as margens das condições têrmicas de rendimento, usando como indicador a conversão alimentar e, através da metodologia da especificação por desempenho, apresenta as características dos galpões, apontando as principais vias para a solução dos problemas higrotérmicos. No trabalho há uma revisão bibliográfica em relação ao tema da fisiologia das aves, no que se refere a produção e dissipação do calor corporal para o meio ambiente. Foi dado um enfoque à análise do tema de transmissão de calor, com o intuito de servir de guia para os estudos dos profissionais da área de Ciências Agrárias.

O Programa Comunidade Ativa foi criado pela Comunidade Solidária como uma estratégia para induzir o Desenvolvimento Local Integrado e Sustentável em pequenos municípios brasileiros por meio da formação de fóruns comunitários e da capacitação desses fóruns. O Programa pretende favorecer que as pessoas se tornem mais ativas, participantes e responsáveis pela resolução de seus problemas comuns e incentivar a valorização das culturas locais. O presente estudo investiga as possibilidades e as limitações de o Programa Comunidade Ativa favorecer que os membros das comunidades em que atua apropriem-se de sua liberdade, assumindo a responsabilidade pela construção de sua realidade social. A fim de responder a esta questão recorreu-se neste estudo ao pensamento de Martin Heidegger e de Hanna Arendt. O referencial teórico desta dissertação está dividido em duas partes. Na primeira parte são abordados os seguintes temas: reforma do Estado e políticas sociais; cidadania; desenvolvimento local; espaços públicos de participação; formação humana; e capital social. A segunda parte do referencial teórico apresenta a Fenomenologia Existencial e suas concepções sobre conhecimento, homem, mundo, liberdade, política e educação. A metodologia de investigação inclui coleta e tratamento dos dados provenientes de estudo de documentos e de palestra e de trinta e sete entrevistas realizadas com atores situados desde o âmbito nacional até a esfera local. No último capítulo os dados coletados são interpretados segundo o referencial teórico adotado - o que permite apontar diversas limitações e algumas possibilidades do Programa Comunidade Ativa favorecer que os membros da comunidade em que atua apropriem-se de sua liberdade - e são realizadas reflexões sobre o papel, os desafios e as possibilidades do Estado indutor.
