Proton second moment (M2) and spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) of Ammonium Hydrogen Bischloroacetate (ABCA) have been measured in the range 77-350 K. A value of 6.5 G2 has been observed for the second moment at room temperature, which is typical of NH4+ reorientation and also a second moment transition in the range 170-145 K indicates the freezing of NH4+ motion. The NMR signal disappears dicontinuously at 128 K. Proton spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) Vs temperature, yielded only one sharp miniumum of 1.9 msec which is again typical of NH4+ reorientation. A slope change at 250 K is also observed, prbably due to CH2 motion. Further, the FID signal disappears at 128 K. Thus the Tc appears to be 128 K (of two reported values 120 K and 128 K). Activation energies have been calculated and the mechanism of the phase transition is discussed.

The measured specific heat of normal liquid 3He shows a plateau for 0.15<1 K; below 0.15 K and above 1 K, it rises linearly with temperature. However, the slope on the high-temperature side is very much reduced compared with the free-Fermi-gas value. We explain these features through a microscopic, thermal spin- and density-fluctuation model. The plateau is due to spin fluctuations which have a low characteristic energy in 3He. Because of the low compressibility, the density fluctuations are highly suppressed; this leads to a reduced slope for CV(T) for high temperatures.

The letter describes a method of improving the dynamic range of a continuously variable slope delta modulator (CVSD). This is achieved by modifying the basic step size delta0 Compared to the CVSD algorithm, the modified CVSD (MCVSD) algorithm yields about 15–20 dB dynamic range improvement without degrading the peak SNR and the bit error rate tolerance.

Existence of a periodic progressive wave solution to the nonlinear boundary value problem for Rayleigh surface waves of finite amplitude is demonstrated using an extension of the method of strained coordinates. The solution, obtained as a second-order perturbation of the linearized monochromatic Rayleigh wave solution, contains harmonics of all orders of the fundamental frequency. It is shown that the higher harmonic content of the wave increases with amplitude, but the slope of the waveform remains finite so long as the amplitude is less than a critical value.

Increased sediment and nutrient losses resulting from unsustainable grazing management in the Burdekin River catchment are major threats to water quality in the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon. To test the effects of grazing management on soil and nutrient loss, five 1 ha mini-catchments were established in 1999 under different grazing strategies on a sedimentary landscape near Charters Towers. Reference samples were also collected from watercourses in the Burdekin catchment during major flow events.Soil and nutrient loss were relatively low across all grazing strategies due to a combination of good cover, low slope and low rainfall intensities. Total soil loss varied from 3 to 20 kg haˉ¹ per event while losses of N and P ranged from 10 to 1900 g haˉ¹ and from 1 to 71 g haˉ¹ per event respectively. Water quality of runoff was considered moderate across all strategies with relatively low levels of total suspended sediment (range: 8-1409 mg lˉ¹), total N (range: 101-4000 ug lˉ¹) and total P (range: 14-609 ug lˉ¹). However, treatment differences are likely to emerge with time as the impacts of the different grazing strategies on land condition become more apparent.Samples collected opportunistically from rivers and creeks during flow events displayed significantly higher levels of total suspended sediment (range: 10-6010 mg lˉ¹), total N (range: 650-6350 ug lˉ¹) and total P (range: 50-1500 ug lˉ¹) than those collected at the grazing trial. These differences can largely be attributed to variation in slope, geology and cover between the grazing trial and different catchments. In particular, watercourses draining hillier, grano-diorite landscapes with low cover had markedly higher sediment and nutrient loads compared to those draining flatter, sedimentary landscapes. These preliminary data suggest that on relatively flat, sedimentary landscapes, extensive cattle grazing is compatible with achieving water quality targets, provided high levels of ground cover are maintained. In contrast, sediment and nutrient loss under grazing on more erodable land types is cause for serious concern. Long-term empirical research and monitoring will be essential to quantify the impacts of changed land management on water quality in the spatially and temporally variable Burdekin River catchment.

The variation in the tensile properties at 77 K and 300 K in warm-rolled (300 K) Cd-1% Ag alloy with deformation has been studied in longitudinal as well as transverse specimens. The low-temperature yield strength increases with warm rolling without much loss in ductility. The strength at 300 K, however, decreases with heavy warm deformation. From microstructural studies and X-ray investigations, it was observed that changes in grain size and texture occur during warm rolling. Both these changes are found to be important in deciding the tensile properties. The longitudinal and transverse strengths at 77 K vary linearly with l-frac12, where l is the average grain diameter, and thus they obey the Hall-Petch relation. The Hall-Petch slope, k, is lower in specimens with favourable lcub1013rcub texture while the intercept σo is higher when the lcub0002rcub texture is less favourable.

Säästyneet lähes luonnontilaiset havumetsät, joita on etupäässä vuoriston ylimmissä osissa 2600-4000 metrin korkeudella, edistävät tehokkaasti metsän luontaista uudistumista ja levittäytymistä vaurioituneille alueille. Suomen Akatemia rahoitti vuosina 2004-2006 VITRI:n tutkimushanketta, josta Ping Zhou'n väitöskirjatyö muodosti keskeisen osan. Kenttätyö Sichuanissa avasi mahdollisuuden hedelmälliseen monitieteiseen yhteistyöhön ja tutkijavaihtoon Kiinan tiedeakatemian alaisen Chengdun biologiainstituutin (CIB) kanssa; tämä tieteellinen kanssakäyminen jatkuu edelleen.

The method of characteristics with some simplifying assumptions is made applicable for analyzing a given straight slope. By assuming that the mobilized shear strength varies with depth, and treating the whole soil mass as a series of layers, factors of safety of a given slope at different heights and a series of lines with different mobilized shear strength are obtained. The results show that the factors of safety obtained by the present method are lower than those obtained by friction circle method.

In aquatic systems, in-stream structures such as dams, weirs and road crossings can act as barriers to fish movement along waterways. There is a growing array of technological fish-pass solutions for the movement of fish across large structures such as weirs and dams. However, most existing weir structures lack dedicated fishways, and fish often have to rely on drowned conditions to move upstream. In order to assess the adequacy of a given or proposed weir for upstream fish passage under drowned conditions, it is necessary to determine, firstly, the hydraulic properties of the drowned weir with respect to the requirements of the fish community and, secondly, the duration and timing of drowning flows with respect to the hydrograph for the site and the likely timing of fish movements. This paper primarily addresses the first issue. A computer program has been developed and incorporated in a simple-to-operate spreadsheet for the determination of the hydraulic characteristics of a drowned weir which are important to fish movement. The program is based on a theoretical analysis of drowned weirs and subsequent extensive verification in laboratory experiments. Inputs to the program include site information comprising channel cross-section data, channel slope, and channel roughness, and weir information comprising weir height and the required minimum drowned depth over the weir for migrating fish passage. The program then calculates the flow rate at which the required level of drowning occurs, the velocity characteristics above the weir (including transverse distributions), and flow depths and velocities upstream and downstream of the weir. The paper discusses (briefly) the theoretical background of the program and its experimental verification. A case study is then presented that illustrates the use of the program in the field to assess fish passage opportunities at an existing weir and to develop a case for retrofitting a fishway. Some discussion is also provided on the contribution of a modelled drownout volume to the assessment of how significant a barrier a weir is to fish passage. It is shown that the program is an important new additional tool in the assessment of the adequacy of weir structures in providing for fish movement and informing associated fish passage solutions. Little is known about the threat of mercury (Hg) to consumers in food webs of Australia's wet-dry tropics. This is despite high concentrations in similar biomes elsewhere and a recent history of gold mining that could lead to a high degree of exposure for biota. We analysed Hg in water, sediments, invertebrates and fishes in rivers and estuaries of north Queensland, Australia to determine its availability and biomagnification in food webs. Concentrations in water and sediments were low relative to other regions of Hg concern, with only four of 138 water samples and five of 60 sediment samples above detection limits of 0.1 mu g L-1 and 01 mu g g(-1), respectively. Concentrations of Hg in fishes and invertebrates from riverine and wetland food webs were well below international consumption guidelines, including those in piscivorous fishes, likely due to low baseline concentrations and limited rates of biomagnification (average slope of log Hg vs. delta N-15 = 0.08). A large fish species of recreational, commercial, and cultural importance (the barramundi, Lates calcarifer), had low concentrations that were below consumption guidelines. Observed variation in Hg concentrations in this species was primarily explained by age and foraging location (floodplain vs. coastal), with floodplain feeders having higher Hg concentrations than those foraging at sea. These analyses suggest that there is a limited threat of Hg exposure for fish-eating consumers in this region. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A parametric study of the flood wave propagation problem is made, based on numerical solution of the nondimensionalized unsteady flow equations of open channels. The propagation of a sinusoidal flood wave in a prismatic channel is studied for uniform initial flow. The governing parameters (initial uniform flow Froude number, wave amplitude, wave duration, channel width parameter and side slope) are varied over a wide range. In all, 49 cases are studied. Effects of these governing parameters on the subsidence of stage and discharge and the speed of the wave peak are described in detail. The relative wave amplitude is found to vary linearly with F0, the initial uniform flow froude number, for lower F0 values. Wave duration has a very pronounced effect on subsidence with greater subsidence at lower wave duration values.

Significant genotypic differences in tolerance of pollen germination and seed set to high temperatures have been shown in sorghum. However, it is unclear whether differences were associated with variation in either the threshold temperature above which reproductive processes are affected, or in the tolerance to increased temperature above that threshold. The objectives of this study were to (a) dissect known differences in heat tolerance for a range of sorghum genotypes into differences in the threshold temperature and tolerance to increased temperatures, (b) determine whether poor seed set under high temperatures can be compensated by increased seed mass, and (c) identify whether genotypic differences in heat tolerance in a controlled environment facility (CEF) can be reproduced in field conditions. Twenty genotypes were grown in a CEF under four day/night temperatures (31.9/21.0 °C, 32.8/21.0 °C, 36.1/21.0 °C, and 38.0/21.0 °C), and a subset of six genotypes was grown in the field under four different temperature regimes around anthesis. The novelty of the findings in this study related to differences in responsiveness to high temperature—genotypic differences in seed set percentage were found for both the threshold temperature and the tolerance to increased maximum temperature above that threshold. Further, the response of seed set to high temperature in the field study was well correlated to that in the CEF (R2 = 0.69), although the slope was significantly less than unity, indicating that heat stress effects may have been diluted under the variable field conditions. Poor seed set was not compensated by increased seed mass in either CEF or field environments. Grain yield was thus closely related to seed set percentage. This result demonstrates the potential for development of a low-cost field screening method to identify high-temperature tolerant varieties that could deliver sustainable yields under future warmer climates.

The co-doping effect of Zn and Pr impurities in the compound of composition Y1-xPrxBa2[Cu1-yZny](3)O7-delta with x = 0.1, x = 0.2 and 0 <= y <= 0.1 has been investigated by analyzing the results of electrical resistivity measurements. It is found that for Pr substitution at x = 0.1, there is a minimal influence on in-plane processes, thereby slightly affecting T-c and residual resistivity rho(0), but with the resistivity slope d rho/dT becoming large for the range of y from 0.03 to 0.06, leading to a larger depinning effect. For x = 0.2 a drastic change is observed whereby rho(0) becomes abnormally large, and d rho/dT becomes negative, implying totally pinned charge stripes and no depinning. The second observation therefore suggests that Pr substitution converts the overdoped system to an optimally doped system, leading to the universal superconductor-insulator transition.

The kinetic parameters for the hydrogen evolution reaction on a stainless steel substrate have been obtained from a study of the steady-state polarization curves as well as the galvanostatic transients. The high Tafel slope obtained in the steady-state polarization measurements was ascribed to the presence of an oxide film present on the surface of the stainless steel electrode.
