Margaret Atwood’s novella The Penelopiad (2005) seemingly celebrates Penelope’s agency in opposition to Homer’s myth in The Odyssey. However, the twelve murdered maids steal the book to suggest the possibility of what Janice Raymond calls gyn/affection, a female bonding based on the logic of emotion that, in Atwood’s revision, verges on Kristevan abjection, the sinister and the fantastic, and serves a cathartic effect not only in the maids but also in the reader. This essay aims to question the generally accepted empowerment of Atwood’s Penelope and celebrates the murdered maids as the locus of emotion, where marginal aspects of gender and class merge to weave a powerful metaphorical tapestry of popular and traditionally feminized literary genres that, in plunging into and embracing the semiotic realm, ultimately solidify into an eclectic but compact alternative tradition of women’s writing and myth-making.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is an endogenous peptide hormone whose metabolic effects have been exploited for glycaemic control in diabetes, but which also exerts important cardiovascular actions. We have recently reported that the GLP-1 mimetic, exendin-4, exerts clear benefits post-myocardial infarction via specific effects on extracellular matrix remodelling which is dysregulated in the diabetic heart (Robinson E et al, Basic Res Cardiol 2015; 110: 20), and have now shown similar cardioprotective actions in experimental diabetes, which are mediated via direct effects on infiltrating macrophages (Tate M et al, Basic Res Cardiol 2015; in press). Taken together with the apparent complexity of GLP-1 signalling and disappointing results of recent cardiovascular trials, our work strongly suggests that selective targeting of GLP-1 may be required in order to realise therapeutic benefit for both diabetic and non-diabetic heart failure patients. This is particularly important given the epidemic increase in the incidence of diabetes which is associated with a markedly enhanced susceptibility to cardiovascular stress.

The overload of informal caregivers of people with dementia tends to be inversely associated with their life quality. This study aims to analyze the associations between the family overload and the life quality of these informal caregivers, as well as the relationships between these variables and other sociodemographic and functional factors. Population and methods: It’s a cross-sectional study (descriptive and analytical). The convenience sample was composed of 33 informal caregivers. The study was carried out in the external services consultations of two centers of the Institute of the Hospitable Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The data were obtained by applying the following scales: Overload Interview of Zarit, WHOQOL-Bref, Scale of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living of Lawton and Brody, and Barthel Index. Results: We found a negative correlation between the family overload and every domains of life quality (p ≤ 0.002). The men caregivers proved to be less burdened than the main caregivers (p = 0.023). The existence of a secondary caregiver was an indicator of a better life quality in the fields of social relations (p = 0.034) and in the environment (p = 0.034). The evaluated caregivers, more prolonged time occupy to care, lower was their life quality on the physical level (p = 0.003) and on the environment (p = 0.000). The overload levels were bigger whereas the lower age of the caregiver (p = 0.003). The independence of the person with dementia on the instrumental level rendered a better life quality for caregivers in all domains of this variable and also provided a minor burden for the caregivers (p = 0.017). Conclusions: In this small sample, the higher burden to the informal caregivers of people with dementia is associated with lower indicators of life quality, in every domains of this variable. In this study, the main factors to keep in count in the evaluation to the caregivers of people with dementia were: the gender, the existence of a secondary caregiver and the independence of the person to be cared in his instrumental activities of daily living. We also observed that the overload and life quality variables do not relate only to each other but at the same time with different situations of the life of the caregiver. A closer intervention to the characteristics of each caregiver could reflect a lower overload and a better life quality of the caregiver and eventually as well as the person to be cared of.

This thesis explores the relationship between exercises of disciplinary power and acts of resistance as they relate to the negotiation of identities at Spanish Residential School between the years of 1878 and 1930. The school itself, originally Wikwemikong Industrial School, was administered by the Jesuits and the Daughters of the Heart of Mary and relocated to Spanish, Ontario in 1913. Various archival and printed sources have been used to reveal methods of disciplinary power that administrators used to reshape the Aboriginal students. However, despite their incessant efforts, the administrators of Spanish Residential School did not succeed in completely reforming their pupils. The documentary record, then, also suggests that students at Spanish Residential School, although confined in a very oppressive institution, creatively used opportunities to alter their circumstances.

The lymph heart is a sac-like structure on either side of avian tail. In some adult birds, it empties the lymph from the copulatory organ; however, during embryonic development, it is thought to circulate extra-embryonic lymph. Very little is known about the origin, innervation and the cellular changes it undergoes during development. Using immunohistochemistry and gene expression profiling we show that the musculature of the lymph heart is initially composed solely of striated skeletal muscle but later develops an additional layer composed of smooth myofibroblasts. Chick-quail fate-mapping demonstrates that the lymph heart originates from the hypaxial compartments of somites 34-41. The embryonic lymph heart is transiently innervated by somatic motoneurons with no autonomic input. In comparison to body muscles, the lymph heart has different sensitivity to neuromuscular junction blockers (sensitive only to decamethonium). Furthermore, its abundant bungarotoxin-positive acetylcholinesterase receptors are unique as they completely lack specific acetylcholinesterase activity. Several lines of evidence suggest that the lymph heart may possess an intrinsic pacing mechanism. Finally, we assessed the function of the lymph heart during embryogenesis and demonstrate that it is responsible for preventing embryonic oedema in birds, a role previously thought to be played by body skeletal muscle contractions.

Although many studies have explored the stimuli which promote hypertrophic growth or death in cardiac myocytes and the signaling pathways which they activate, the mechanisms by which these pathways promote the pathophysiological responses are still obscure. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades (in which MAPKs are phosphorylated and activated by upstream MAPK kinases [MKKs] which are, in turn, phosphorylated and activated by MKK kinases [MKKKs]) were identified in the early- to mid-1990s as potentially key regulatory pathways in cardiac myocyte pathophysiology.1,2 The principal MAPKs investigated in cardiac myocytes are the extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2), c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs), and p38-MAPKs. ERK1/2 are potently activated by hypertrophic stimuli, whereas JNKs and p38-MAPKs are potently activated by cellular stresses (eg, oxidative stress). However, there is cross-talk such that JNKs and p38-MAPKs are activated by hypertrophic stimuli and ERK1/2 are activated by cellular stresses, and the contribution of each pathway to the overall cardiac myocyte response is not entirely clear. MAPKs phosphorylate a number of known transcription factors to alter their transactivating activities thus, presumably, influencing gene expression to elicit the cellular response.3 Nevertheless, the immediate consequences (ie, the transcription factors which are phosphorylated) and downstream consequences (ie, genes with altered expression) of MAPK signaling in the heart or specifically in cardiac myocytes are still largely unknown. To start to address this issue for the p38-MAPK pathway in the (rat) heart (Figure), Tenhunen et al4 directly injected adenoviruses encoding wild-type (WT) p38-MAPKα together …

Astrobiology is a transdisciplinary field with extraordinary potential for the scientific community. As such, it is important to educate the community at large about the growing importance of this field to increase awareness and scientific content learning and expose potential future scientists. To this end, we propose the creation of a traveling museum exhibit that focuses exclusively on astrobiology and utilizes modern museum exhibit technology and design. This exhibit (the Astrobiology Road Show), organized and evaluated by an international group of astrobiology students and postdocs, is planned to tour throughout the Americas. Background: In pediatric populations, the use of resting heart rate as a health index remains unclear, mainly in epidemiological settings. The aims of this study were to analyze the impact of resting heart rate on screening dyslipidemia and high blood glucose and also to identify its significance in pediatric populations. Methods: The sample was composed of 971 randomly selected adolescents aged 11 to 17 years (410 boys and 561 girls). Resting heart rate was measured with oscillometric devices using two types of cuffs according to the arm circumference. Biochemical parameters triglycerides, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and glucose were measured. Body fatness, sleep, smoking, alcohol consumption and cardiorespiratory fitness were analyzed. Results: Resting heart rate was positively related to higher sleep quality (β = 0.005, p = 0.039) and negatively related to cardiorespiratory fitness (β = -0.207, p = 0.001). The receiver operating characteristic curve indicated significant potential for resting heart rate in the screening of adolescents at increased values of fasting glucose (area under curve = 0.611 ± 0.039 [0.534 - 0.688]) and triglycerides (area under curve = 0.618 ± 0.044 [0.531 - 0.705]).Conclusion: High resting heart rate constitutes a significant and independent risk related to dyslipidemia and high blood glucose in pediatric populations. Sleep and cardiorespiratory fitness are two important determinants of the resting heart rate. © 2013 Fernandes et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.
