In this paper, we present a simple technique to determine the coupling efficiency between a laser diode and a lensed-tip based on the ABCD transformation matrix method. We have compared our analysis technique to that of previous work and have found that the presented method is reliable in predicting the coupling efficiency of lensed-tip and has the advantage of simplicity of coupling efficiency calculation even by a pocket calculator. Sedimentos em suspensão representam um dos principais fatores que afetam a qualidade dos sistemas aquáticos no mundo; influenciam os processos geomórficos de construção da paisagem e podem indicar problemas de erosão e perda de solo na bacia hidrográfica contribuinte. O seu monitoramento espacial e temporal é fundamental nas atividades de gestão ambiental de áreas costeiras. Nesse sentido, a hipótese básica desta pesquisa é que o padrão espacial e temporal de plumas de sedimentos costeiras associado ao regime hidrológico do rio pode ser caracterizado a partir de imagens orbitais de média resolução espacial. Para comprová-la, elegeu-se a foz do rio Paraíba do Sul como área de estudo para definição e teste metodológico, e formulou-se como principal objetivo mapear qualitativamente a pluma costeira deste rio a partir de imagens Landsat 5 e CBERS-2, ao longo do período compreendido entre 1985 e 2007. As datas avaliadas foram criteriosamente definidas através de três estratégias de análise, totalizando cinqüenta imagens. Pesquisa bibliográfica e avaliação da resposta espectral da feição de interesse nas imagens selecionadas consistiram nas etapas principais da definição da metodologia. As plumas foram então identificadas, mapeadas e extraídas; posteriormente, suas características espaciais e temporais foram analisadas por intermédio de sistemas de informação geográfica e avaliadas em conjunto com dados históricos de vazão. Os resultados indicam que a banda do vermelho forneceu uma melhor discriminação interna da pluma, sendo, portanto, utilizada como base para as análises realizadas neste trabalho. Com exceção do procedimento de correção atmosférica, a metodologia proposta consiste na utilização de técnicas simples de processamento digital de imagens, baseadas na integração de técnicas semi-automáticas e de análise visual. A avaliação do padrão dos sedimentos e dos mapas temáticos qualitativos de concentração de sedimentos em suspensão indica a forte diferenciação existente entre cenários representativos de épocas de cheia e seca do rio. Análises espaciais do comportamento da pluma contribuem ainda para um maior conhecimento do espaço geográfico, fornecendo subsídios aos mais variados setores do planejamento e gestão ambiental.

The centralized paradigm of a single controller and a single plant upon which modern control theory is built is no longer applicable to modern cyber-physical systems of interest, such as the power-grid, software defined networks or automated highways systems, as these are all large-scale and spatially distributed. Both the scale and the distributed nature of these systems has motivated the decentralization of control schemes into local sub-controllers that measure, exchange and act on locally available subsets of the globally available system information. This decentralization of control logic leads to different decision makers acting on asymmetric information sets, introduces the need for coordination between them, and perhaps not surprisingly makes the resulting optimal control problem much harder to solve. In fact, shortly after such questions were posed, it was realized that seemingly simple decentralized optimal control problems are computationally intractable to solve, with the Wistenhausen counterexample being a famous instance of this phenomenon. Spurred on by this perhaps discouraging result, a concerted 40 year effort to identify tractable classes of distributed optimal control problems culminated in the notion of quadratic invariance, which loosely states that if sub-controllers can exchange information with each other at least as quickly as the effect of their control actions propagates through the plant, then the resulting distributed optimal control problem admits a convex formulation.

The identification of quadratic invariance as an appropriate means of "convexifying" distributed optimal control problems led to a renewed enthusiasm in the controller synthesis community, resulting in a rich set of results over the past decade. The contributions of this thesis can be seen as being a part of this broader family of results, with a particular focus on closing the gap between theory and practice by relaxing or removing assumptions made in the traditional distributed optimal control framework. Our contributions are to the foundational theory of distributed optimal control, and fall under three broad categories, namely controller synthesis, architecture design and system identification.

We begin by providing two novel controller synthesis algorithms. The first is a solution to the distributed H-infinity optimal control problem subject to delay constraints, and provides the only known exact characterization of delay-constrained distributed controllers satisfying an H-infinity norm bound. The second is an explicit dynamic programming solution to a two player LQR state-feedback problem with varying delays. Accommodating varying delays represents an important first step in combining distributed optimal control theory with the area of Networked Control Systems that considers lossy channels in the feedback loop. Our next set of results are concerned with controller architecture design. When designing controllers for large-scale systems, the architectural aspects of the controller such as the placement of actuators, sensors, and the communication links between them can no longer be taken as given -- indeed the task of designing this architecture is now as important as the design of the control laws themselves. To address this task, we formulate the Regularization for Design (RFD) framework, which is a unifying computationally tractable approach, based on the model matching framework and atomic norm regularization, for the simultaneous co-design of a structured optimal controller and the architecture needed to implement it. Our final result is a contribution to distributed system identification. Traditional system identification techniques such as subspace identification are not computationally scalable, and destroy rather than leverage any a priori information about the system's interconnection structure. We argue that in the context of system identification, an essential building block of any scalable algorithm is the ability to estimate local dynamics within a large interconnected system. To that end we propose a promising heuristic for identifying the dynamics of a subsystem that is still connected to a large system. We exploit the fact that the transfer function of the local dynamics is low-order, but full-rank, while the transfer function of the global dynamics is high-order, but low-rank, to formulate this separation task as a nuclear norm minimization problem. Finally, we conclude with a brief discussion of future research directions, with a particular emphasis on how to incorporate the results of this thesis, and those of optimal control theory in general, into a broader theory of dynamics, control and optimization in layered architectures.

This thesis examines two problems concerned with surface effects in simple molecular systems. The first is the problem associated with the interaction of a fluid with a solid boundary, and the second originates from the interaction of a liquid with its own vapor.

For a fluid in contact with a solid wall, two sets of integro-differential equations, involving the molecular distribution functions of the system, are derived. One of these is a particular form of the well-known Bogolyubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon equations. For the second set, the derivation, in contrast with the formulation of the B.B.G.K.Y. hierarchy, is independent of the pair-potential assumption. The density of the fluid, expressed as a power series in the uniform fluid density, is obtained by solving these equations under the requirement that the wall be ideal.

The liquid-vapor interface is analyzed with the aid of equations that describe the density and pair-correlation function. These equations are simplified and then solved by employing the superposition and the low vapor density approximations. The solutions are substituted into formulas for the surface energy and surface tension, and numerical results are obtained for selected systems. Finally, the liquid-vapor system near the critical point is examined by means of the lowest order B.B.G.K.Y. equation.

Dosidicus gigas is a large pelagic cephalopod of the eastern Pacific that has recently undergone an unexpected, significant range expansion up the coast of North America. The impact that such a range expansion is expected to have on local fisheries and marine ecosystems has motivated a thorough study of this top predator, a squid whose lifestyle has been quite mysterious until recently. Unfortunately, Dosidicus spends daylight hours at depths prohibitive to making observations without significant artificial interference. Observations of this squid‟s natural behaviors have thus far been considerably limited by the bright illumination and loud noises of remotely-operated-vehicles, or else the presence of humans from boats or with SCUBA. However, recent technological innovations have allowed for observations to take place in the absence of humans, or significant human intrusion, through the use of animal-borne devices such as National Geographic‟s CRITTERCAM. Utilizing the advanced video recording and data logging technology of this device, this study seeks to characterize unknown components of Dosidicus gigas behavior at depth. Data from two successful CRITTERCAM deployments reveal an assortment of new observations concerning Dosidicus lifestyle. Tri-axial accelerometers enable a confident description of Dosidicus orientation during ascents, descents, and depth maintenance behavior - previously not possible with simple depth tags. Video documentation of intraspecific interactions between Dosidicus permits the identification of ten chromatic components, a previously undescribed basal chromatic behavior, and multiple distinct body postures. And finally, based on visualizations of spermatophore release by D. gigas and repetitive behavior patterns between squid pairs, this thesis proposes the existence of a new mating behavior in Dosidicus. This study intends to provide the first glimpse into the natural behavior of Dosidicus, establishing the groundwork for a comprehensive ethogram to be supported with data from future CRITTERCAM deployments. Cataloguing these behaviors will be useful in accounting for Dosidicus‟ current range expansion in the northeast Pacific, as well as to inform public interest in the impacts this expansion will have on local fisheries and marine ecosystems.

[ES]Hoy en día la simulación de elementos de red y de redes completas supone una herramienta esencial para las telecomunicaciones, pudiendo ayudar en el dimensionado y el análisis de las mismas, así como en el estudio de problemáticas y escenarios que puedan darse. Uno de estos puntos de gran interés para el estudio es ARQ, y más concretamente, las técnicas de Stop & Wait y Go Back N. Así pues, nace dentro del grupo de investigación NQAS la necesidad de elaborar un conjunto de simulaciones sobre estas técnicas, con especial interés sobre la recolección de datos relacionados con el rendimiento de las mismas. Se pretende diseñar y simular una serie de escenarios de red partiendo de módulos simples con funciones de envío, conmutación y recepción de paquetes, escalándolo gradualmente para aumentar las funcionalidades de los mismos, hasta conseguir el diseño e implementación de redes basadas en dicha arquitectura cuyos enlaces estén bajo la cobertura de instancias de protocolo ARQ (Stop & Wait, Go Back N). Se tratará el resultado de las simulaciones mediante la recolección de estadísticas relacionadas con rendimiento y desempeño de las técnicas.
