Psychology is a relatively new scientific branch and still lacks consistent methodological foundation to support its investigations. Given its immaturity, this science finds difficulties to delimit its ontological status, which spawnes several epistemological and methodological misconceptions. Given this, Psychology failed to demarcate precisely its object of study, leading, thus, the emergence of numerous conceptions about the psychic, which resulted in the fragmentation of this science. In its constitution, psychological science inherited a complex philosophical problem: the mind-body issue. Therefore, to define their status, Psychology must still face this problem, seeking to elucidate what is the mind, the body and how they relate. In light of the importance of this issue to a strict demarcation of psychological object, it was sought in this research, to investigate the mind-body problem in the Phenomenological Psychology of Edith Stein (1891-1942), phenomenologist philosopher who undertook efforts for a foundation of Psychology. For that, the discussion was subsidized from the contributions of the Philosophy of Mind and the support of the phenomenological method to the mind-body problem. From there, by a qualitative bibliographical methodology, it sought to examine the problem of research through the analysis of some philosophical-psychological philosopher's works, named: "Psychic Causality” (Kausalität Psychische, 1922) and “Introduction to Philosophy" (Einführung in die Philosophie, 1920). For this investigation, it was made, without prejudice to the discussion, a terminological equivalence between the terms mind and psyche, as the philosopher used the latter to refer to the object of Psychology. It sought to examine, therefore, how Stein conceived the psyche, the body and the relationship between them. Although it wasn't the focus of the investigation, it also took into account the spiritual dimension, as the philosopher conceived the human person as consisting of three dimensions: body, psyche and spirit. Given this, Stein highlighted the causal mechanism of the psyche, which is based on the variations of the vital force that emerges from the vital sphere. In relation to the corporeal dimension, the philosopher, following the analysis of Edmund Husserl (1859-1938), highlighted the dual aspect of the body, because it is at the same time something material (Körper) and also a linving body (Leib). On the face of it, it is understood that the psyche and the body are closely connected, so that it constitutes a dual-unit which is manifested in the Leib. This understanding of the problem psyche-mind/body provides a rich analysis of this issue, enabling the overcoming of some inconsistencies of the monistic and dualistic positions. Given this, it allows a strict elucidation of the Psychology object, contributing to the foundation of this science.

This data set contains profiles of atmospheric carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations retrieved from measurements made by the Kiruna Microwave Radiometer (KIMRA), housed at the Swedish Institute for Space Physics, Kiruna. The data is retrieved on a standard pressure grid that is 62 layers, spaced approximately equally in altitude between 2 km and 124 km. The current time range of the data is December 2008 to May 2015, with data gaps corresponding to Summer periods when the CO concentrations in the middle atmosphere drop to very low values, or to non-operation of the instrument. The profile information is considered useful between approximately 48 km and 86 km, specifically where the measurement response is above 0.8. If the CO profiles are being compared to another data set with significantly higher altitude resolution, the averaging kernel matrix should be used to smooth the higher resolution data. The error in the profile from statistical noise on the measured spectrum is also provided. This work has been funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research through the research project: Role Of the Middle atmosphere in Climate (ROMIC, https://romic.iap-kborn.de).

How do the market characteristics influence the obstacles to innovation in the non-residential building industry in the Netherlands? Innovation can make an important contribution to the firm’s competitive advantage. Within the nonresidential building industry in the Netherlands the competition is very high. Therefore there should be enough motivation to innovate. The building industry has been severely hit by the economic crisis in the past years in the Netherlands, which made the competition even harder. Nevertheless the industry has a poor reputation on innovation and is known as a conservative industry. In the past decade the industry and government have put a lot of effort into making the sector more innovative. Sadly the innovation level has hardly improved. Why does the building industry fail to make itself more innovative? To make a contribution to this issue a research can be conducted to investigate the causes of this low innovation level. Research This thesis tends to make more clear about the causes of the low innovation level. Based on an extensive field research as well as a literature research the main question of this thesis is: How do the market characteristics influence the obstacles to innovation in the non-residential building industry in the Netherlands? The structure is based on qualitative research through case study research. Therefore a conceptual model is structured which is used as a fundamental base. Within the first case 21 interviews were held with the prime actors which played a direct role in the innovation level of non-residential projects. These prime actors are clients, consultancy agencies and building contractors. Also two panel discussions were organized to discuss the outcomes of the interviews. In the second and third case a part of certain market characteristics of the conceptual model were changed. The main reason to investigate these cases is to substantiate the results of the first case.

Robust joint modelling is an emerging field of research. Through the advancements in electronic patient healthcare records, the popularly of joint modelling approaches has grown rapidly in recent years providing simultaneous analysis of longitudinal and survival data. This research advances previous work through the development of a novel robust joint modelling methodology for one of the most common types of standard joint models, that which links a linear mixed model with a Cox proportional hazards model. Through t-distributional assumptions, longitudinal outliers are accommodated with their detrimental impact being down weighed and thus providing more efficient and reliable estimates. The robust joint modelling technique and its major benefits are showcased through the analysis of Northern Irish end stage renal disease patients. With an ageing population and growing prevalence of chronic kidney disease within the United Kingdom, there is a pressing demand to investigate the detrimental relationship between the changing haemoglobin levels of haemodialysis patients and their survival. As outliers within the NI renal data were found to have significantly worse survival, identification of outlying individuals through robust joint modelling may aid nephrologists to improve patient's survival. A simulation study was also undertaken to explore the difference between robust and standard joint models in the presence of increasing proportions and extremity of longitudinal outliers. More efficient and reliable estimates were obtained by robust joint models with increasing contrast between the robust and standard joint models when a greater proportion of more extreme outliers are present. Through illustration of the gains in efficiency and reliability of parameters when outliers exist, the potential of robust joint modelling is evident. The research presented in this thesis highlights the benefits and stresses the need to utilise a more robust approach to joint modelling in the presence of longitudinal outliers.

Precast Concrete Panel Thickness for Epoxy-Coated Prestressing Strands, HR-353, Interim Report, 1994
Resumo:
A recommended minimum thickness for prestressed concrete (P/C) bridge deck panels containing 3/8-in. diameter, 270-ksi, low-relaxation, grit-impregnated, epoxy-coated prestressing strands is being evaluated by testing prototype panel specimens. As of January 1994, specimens from ten castings have been tested. The specimens in the first five castings were constructed to establish a preliminary minimum thickness for P/C panels. The specimens in the last five castings were constructed to 1) confirm the minimum panel thickness requirement, 2) measure the development length of epoxy-coated strands in specimens containing multiple strands, 3) measure the development length of uncoated strands in specimens containing multiple and single strands, 4) observe if concrete cracks form in thin panel specimens that have a raked top surface and are reinforced with welded wire fabric and either epoxy-coated or uncoated strands, 5) measure the transfer length for specimens containing a single uncoated strand, and 6) observe the seating characteristics of the grips used for uncoated strand and epoxy-coated strands. These tests have produced several initial findings. The preliminary recommended thickness for P/C panels containing grit-impregnated, epoxy-coated strands is 3 in. and the tentative development length for uncoated and coated multiple strands is approximately 45 in. and 24 in., respectively. Further tests will address confirmation of the recommended P/C panel thickness and establish the transfer and development lengths of single and multiple, uncoated and grit-impregnated epoxy-coated strands.

Precast prestressed concrete panels have been used in bridge deck construction in Iowa and many other states. To investigate the performance of these panels at abutment or pier diaphragm locations for bridges with various skew angles, a research program involving both analytical and experimental aspects, is being conducted. This interim report presents the status of the research with respect to four tasks. Task 1 which involves a literature review and two surveys is essentially complete. Task 2 which involved field investigations of three Iowa bridges containing precast panel subdecks has been completed. Based on the findings of these investigations, future inspections are recommended to evaluate potential panel deterioration due to possible corrosion of the prestressed strands. Task 3 is the experimental program which has been established to monitor the behavior of five configurations of full scale composite deck slabs. Three dimensional test and instrumentation frameworks have been constructed to load and monitor the slab specimens. The first slab configuration representing an interior panel condition is being tested and preliminary results are presented for one of these tests in this interim report. Task 4 involves the analytical investigation of the experimental specimens. Finite element methods are being applied to analytically predict the behavior of the test specimens. The first test configuration of the interior panel condition has been analyzed for the same loads used in the laboratory, and the results are presented herein. Very good correlation between the analytical and experimental results has occurred.

Currently, no standard mix design procedure is available for CIR-emulsion in Iowa. The CIR-foam mix design process developed during the previous phase is applied for CIR-emulsion mixtures with varying emulsified asphalt contents. Dynamic modulus test, dynamic creep test, static creep test and raveling test were conducted to evaluate the short- and long-term performance of CIR-emulsion mixtures at various testing temperatures and loading conditions. A potential benefit of this research is a better understanding of CIR-emulsion material properties in comparison with those of CIR-foam material that would allow for the selection of the most appropriate CIR technology and the type and amount of the optimum stabilization material. Dynamic modulus, flow number and flow time of CIR-emulsion mixtures using CSS-1h were generally higher than those of HFMS-2p. Flow number and flow time of CIR-emulsion using RAP materials from Story County was higher than those from Clayton County. Flow number and flow time of CIR-emulsion with 0.5% emulsified asphalt was higher than CIR-emulsion with 1.0% or 1.5%. Raveling loss of CIR-emulsion with 1.5% emulsified was significantly less than those with 0.5% and 1.0%. Test results in terms of dynamic modulus, flow number, flow time and raveling loss of CIR-foam mixtures are generally better than those of CIR-emulsion mixtures. Given the limited RAP sources used for this study, it is recommended that the CIR-emulsion mix design procedure should be validated against several RAP sources and emulsion types.

The current demographic and epidemiological context highlights the crucial importance of quality palliative care accessible for all. The importance that social work assumes in the defense of human rights guarantees, with a direct action on these care, this study aims to analyze the palliative care from the perspective of social workers, taking into account the current context of social and health policies. We chosed a quantitative and qualitative research through a questionnaire addressed to the universe of the palliative care institutions identified in the national territory (Portugal’s mainland and the Autonomous Regions), with social workers. The sample has 17 social work professionals, mostly women (94.1%), aged between 25 and 57 years. They work as a social worker for 5.5 years on average in the area of care palliative. The results of the study show us that social workers are included in 86.36% of the units / teams, wich are mostly public services. The most frequent professionals in the teams are the doctor, nurse, social worker and psychologist. All or almost all have specific training in the area, and the majority has institutional support for continuing training. Current conditions of work have received an unfavorable evaluation by the participants. The inquired considered access to palliative care as being inequitable, or point to a lack of structures that geographically cover the whole country, whether adequate human resources, not to mention the lack of regulation of the activity of professionals working in palliative care. An intervention based on the achievement of goals that have quick results, which have been a difficulty for an effective intervention from the admission to the referral of the patient for continuity of care is required of the social worker. This research offers a contribution to knowledge production, able to highlight the changes that have taken place in professional practice, allowing to contribute to the reflection about the contexts and processes of intervention as well as on the promotion of the right to quality palliative care of in Portugal.

This talk is about using research and design to reduce medical errors. It doesn’t matter whether you deliver healthcare in the old-fashioned pathogenic way, or salutogenically, it all falls apart if systems and protocols let the patient down, and harm them.
