Crombie, Leslie; Haigh, David; Jones, Raymond C. F.; Mat-Zin, A.Rasid. Dep. Chem., Univ. Nottingham, Nottingham, UK. Journal of the Chemical Society, Perkin Transactions 1: Organic and Bio-Organic Chemistry (1972-1999) (1993), (17), 2047-54. CODEN: JCPRB4 ISSN: 0300-922X. Journal written in English. CAN 120:164608 AN 1994:164608 CAPLUS (Copyright (C) 2009 ACS on SciFinder (R)) Abstract The alkaloid homaline I was prepd. in (?) and natural (S,S)-(-) forms. Linking of 2-azacyclooctanone units either directly or successively using 1,4-dihalogenobutanes or 1,4-dihalogenobut-2-ynes is examd. (?)-5-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,5-diazacyclooctan-2-one is first made by a 2,2'-dithiodipyridine/triphenylphosphine-mediated cyclization, and then by amination and transamidative ring expansion from N-(3-chloropropyl)-4-phenylazetidin-2-one in liq. ammonia, followed by N-methylation. Coupling through a 1,4-dihalogenobutane of either the N-methylated azalactam, or the unmethylated azalactam followed by methylation, gave homaline in (?) and meso forms. (R)-(-)-phenylglycine was converted via (S)-?-phenyl-?-alanine into an (S)-?-lactam which was then alkylated with 1-bromo-3-chloropropane, and aminated and ring expanded in liq. ammonia. Coupling of the homochiral azalactam (2 mol) so formed with 1,4-dibromobutane, followed by N-methylation, gave (S,S)-(-)-homaline identical with the natural material.

Background: We investigated if minimizing bowel manipulation and mesenteric traction using the retroperitoneal approach in open abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair preserves splanchnic perfusion, as measured by gastric tonometry, and reduces the systemic inflammatory response and dysfunction of the various organs.

This article describes an approach for quantifying microsphere deposition onto iron-oxide-coated sand under the influence of adsorbed Suwannee River Humic Acid (SRHA). The experimental technique involved a triple pulse injection of model latex microspheres (microspheres) in pulses of (1) microspheres, followed by (2) SRHA, and then (3) microspheres, into a column filled with iron-coated quartz sand as a water-saturated porous medium. A random sequential adsorption model (RSA) simulated the gradual rise in the first (microsphere) breakthrough curve (BTC). Using the same model calibration parameters a dramatic increase in concentration at the start of the second particle BTC, generated after SRHA injection, could be simulated by matching microsphere concentrations to extrapolated RSA output. RSA results and microsphere/SRHA recoveries showed that 1 mg of SRHA could block 5.90 plus or minus 0.14 x 10^9 microsphere deposition sites. This figure was consistent between experiments injecting different SRHA masses, despite contrasting microsphere deposition/release regimes generating the second microsphere BTC.

Attenuation processes controlling virus fate and transport in the vadose zone of karstified systems can strongly influence groundwater quality. This research compares the breakthrough of two bacteriophage tracers (H40/1 and T7), with contrasting properties, at subsurface monitoring points following application onto an overlying composite sequence of thin organic soil and weathered limestone (epikarst). Short pulse multi-tracer test results revealed that T7 (Source concentration, Co=1.8x106pfu/mL) and H40/1(Co=5.9x106pfu/mL) could reach sampling points 10m below ground less than 30 minutes after tracer application. Contrasting deposition rates, determined from simulated tracer responses, reflected the potential of the ground to differentially attenuate viruses. Prolonged application of both T7 (Co=2.3x104pfu/mL) and H40/1 (Co=1.3x105pfu/mL) over a five hour period during a subsequent test, in which ionic strength levels observed at monitoring points rose consistently, corresponded to a rapid rise in T7 levels, followed by a gradual decline before the end of tracer injection; this reflected reaction-limited deposition in the system. T7’s response contrasted with that of H40/1, whose concentration remained constant over a three hour period before declining dramatically prior to the end of tracer injection. Subsequent application of lower ionic strength tracer-free flush water generated a rapid rise in H40/1 levels and a more gradual release of T7. Results highlight the benefits of employing prolonged injection multi-tracer tests for identifying processes not apparent from conventional short pulse tests. Study findings demonstrate that despite rapid transport rates, the epikarst is capable of physicochemical filtration of viruses and their remobilization, depending on virus type and hydrochemical conditions.
