Physical properties of sediment cores from the Labrador Sea

Sediment core logs from six sediment cores in the Labrador Sea show millennial-scale climate variability during the last glacial by recording all Heinrich events and several major Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles. The same millennial-scale climate change is documented for surface-water d18O records of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (left coiled); hence the surface-water d18O record can be derived from sediment core logging by means of multiple linear regression, providing a paleoclimate proxy record at very high temporal resolution (70 yrs). For the Labrador Sea, sediment core logs contain important information about deep-water current velocities and also reflect the variable input of IRD from different sources as inferred from grain-size analysis, benthic d18O, the relation of density and p-wave velocity, and magnetic susceptibility. For the last glacial, faster deep-water currents which correspond to highs in sediment physical properties, occurred during iceberg discharge and lasted for a several centuries to a few millennia. Those enhanced currents might have contributed to increased production of intermediate waters during times of reduced production of North Atlantic Deep Water. Hudson Strait might have acted as a major supplier of detrital carbonate only during lowered sea level (greater ice extent). During coldest atmospheric temperatures over Greenland, deep-water currents increased during iceberg discharge in the Labrador Sea, then surface water freshened shortly after, while the abrupt atmospheric temperature rise happened after a larger time lag of >=1 kyr. The correlation implies a strong link and common forcing for atmosphere, sea surface, and deep water during the last glacial at millennial time scales but decoupling at orbital time scales.

The silicoflagellate and ebridian assemblages in early middle Eocene Arctic cores obtained by IODP Expedition 302 (ACEX) were studied in order to decipher the paleoceanography of the upper water column. The assemblages in Lithologic Unit 2 (49.7-45.1 Ma), one of the biosiliceous intervals, were usually endemic as compared to the assemblages that occurred outside of the Arctic Ocean. The presence of these endemic assemblages is probably due to a unique environmental setting, controlled by the degree of mixing between the low-salinity Arctic waters and relatively high salinity waters supplied from outside the Arctic Ocean, such as the Atlantic and possibly the Western Siberian Sea. Using the basin-to-basin fractionation model, the early middle Eocene Arctic Ocean corresponds to an estuarine circulation type, which includes the modern-day Black Sea. The abundant down-core occurrence of ebridians strongly suggests the past presence of low-salinity waters, and may indicate that low oxygen concentrations prevailed in the euphotic layer, on the basis of the ecology of the modern ebridian Hermesinum adriaticum.

Link : La realidad como invención

En la presente comunicación nos centraremos en los libros narrativos de Daniel Link, especialmente en La ansiedad (2004), pero en permanente diálogo (y tensión) con sus intervenciones ensayísticas y críticas. Perseguiremos la interrogación acerca del modo en que se plantea esa relación, atendiendo especialmente a la "invención" de realidades, performativamente hablando, y en clara confrontación con la concepción de un realismo mimético. En esta dirección, puntualizaremos acerca del modo en que, en dicho autor, se plantea una lectura y, en el caso concreto de sus ficciones, una "carnalización" (muchas veces coqueteando con la autoficción, o resueltamente autofigurativa) de la monstruosidad inclasificable (no-normalizable) y que da lugar a la invención de realidades fugadas que conservan la potencia indeterminada de los fantasmas, con lo cual la "aventura" es esencialmente formal. Será de particular importancia, en esta dirección, el recurso a ciertas categorías conceptuales y operativas del pensamiento contemporáneo (entre ellas, la teoría queer) como así también al modo en que funcionan ciertas tradiciones literarias en las ficciones de Daniel Link a las cuales, en su trabajo crítico, lee con particular perspicacia

Imaginaciones de la crítica : Una lectura de (y a partir de) Fantasmas de Daniel Link

El trabajo presenta una lectura da la propuesta teórica de Daniel Link en el libro Fantasmas. Imaginación y sociedad y una puesta en relación con otros trabajos del autor. Me detengo en cómo piensa la figura del fantasma en su carácter de potencia y en su poder interpelador para mostrar conexiones con ideas de Agamben. Al mismo tiempo, me interesa marcar la productividad de su interpretación teórica para pensar en cómo aparece la figura de lo fantasmático y monstruoso ligado a la representación de la sexualidad en un cuento de Onetti. Analizo el cuento "Jabón" como un texto que pone en escena la potencia de seducción del erotismo andrógino y de esta forma la figura del fantasma cobra una dimensión atrayente por lo que tiene de ambiguo y secreto. Así, la literatura imagina esas zonas de pasaje entre imaginación y sociedad y representa esos umbrales desde donde los fantasmas plantean siempre un interrogante que, en este caso, está siempre suspendido para sostener la potencia del fantasma
