Railways in Hong Kong have been one of the few successful stories in the major metropolitan cities around the world, not only for their profit-making operation but also the efficiency in dealing with the astonishingly high traffic demands every day. While railway operations require a chain of delicate systems working in harmony all the time, there are numerous engineering problems arising and jeopardising the quality of services. Research in various railway engineering problems is therefore a must to tackle these problems. This paper highlights the railway research works in Hong Kong and discusses their relevance to Mainland China.

Refactoring focuses on improving the reusability, maintainability and performance of programs. However, the impact of refactoring on the security of a given program has received little attention. In this work, we focus on the design of object-oriented applications and use metrics to assess the impact of a number of standard refactoring rules on their security by evaluating the metrics before and after refactoring. This assessment tells us which refactoring steps can increase the security level of a given program from the point of view of potential information flow, allowing application designers to improve their system’s security at an early stage.

Wellness is now seen as central to redefining the National Health agenda. There is growing evidence that contact with nature and physical activity in nature has considerable positive effects on human health. At the most basic level humanity is reliant on the natural world for resources such as air and water. However, a growing body of research is finding that beyond this fundamental relationship exposure to the non-human natural world can also positively enhance perceptions of physiological, emotional, psychological and spiritual health in ways that cannot be satisfied by alternate means. Theoretical explanations for this have posited that non-human nature might 1) restore mental fatigue, 2) trigger deep reflections, 3) provide an opportunity for nurturing and 4) rekindle innate connections. In this paper the authors show how human wellness is strongly connected to their relationship with the natural world. This paper points to how non-human nature could be better utilised for enhancing human health and wellness.

Technology is not always introduced into educational contexts in ways that position pedagogy to the fore. In optimizing learning, forward looking approaches require that we question what it means to be an educated person in the 21st Century and how individuals should engage with technologies to be suitably equipped for emergent knowledge age work. Responses to such ideas typically emphasize collaborative knowledge building where technology is employed as a tool to think with and allows for the active messing with and the development of ideas, rather than merely being a passive window to information. This paper discusses a very deliberate attempt to address a range of imperatives and competing demands within a high school setting where wireless handheld technologies integrated with a learning management system (Moodle) are used to scaffold and implement knowledge sharing and knowledge-building within the school community.

In this globalized environment, Taiwanese firms have been very successful in achieving growth via international market expansion. In particular, the Taiwanese electronics industry has shown a dynamism lacking in comparable industries around the world. However, in recent years there has been a move by many of the larger Taiwanese manufacturing firms to outsource their manufacturing to low-cost producers such as China in order to remain competitive. Conversely, most Taiwanese small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have retained their production facilities in Taiwan. These SMEs seek to expand their sales beyond the domestic market by employing an export strategy, making a significant socioeconomic contribution to the domestic and regional economies. This paper highlights the key dimensions such as enhancing factors (benefits/advantages), inhibiting factors (barriers/costs), and managerial factors (characteristics/commitment) that play an important role in the internationalization of SMEs located within the Taiwanese electronics industry. A logistic regression model is used to predict the probability of a firm being an exporter.

The interactive nature of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is the impetus for the adoption of digital technologies by students for socialising and communicating in new ways. In particular these new ways of communication have embraced web 2.0 technologies such as Facebook© ©, however, teaching practices within educational institutions have remained relatively unchanged. This paper explores the use of the web 2.0 technology Facebook© in a Higher Educational setting to support undergraduate students. It further highlights how students in a developing country currently use this technology and their expectations for the future use of this web 2.0 technology.
Integrating the resource-based view and transaction cost economics in immigrant business performance

This paper presents a new integrated framework that integrates the resource-based view and transaction cost economics to explain the phenomenon of immigrant entrepreneurship. We extend the existing literature on immigrant entrepreneurship by identifying different types of ethnic network resources and demonstrating how these resources interact with transaction costs in the context of Chinese immigrants. Thus, our study contributes to the literature by providing a theoretical framework which identifies mechanisms immigrant entrepreneurs use to strategically deploy resources to minimize costs and maximize performance outcomes.

The Katz and Kahn (1978) motivational framework is an open system management theory that underscores the importance of self-regulation while stressing the significance of using continuous feedback to adapt in a rapidly changing environment. This study aims to examine Katz and Kahn’s prepositions that the implementation of a system of rule compliance, external rewards, and internalized motivation can decrease employee turnover, increase quantitative and qualitative standards of performance, and enhance cooperation and creativeness. The results among 233 Chinese employees (96.6% response rate) indicated partial support for Katz and Kahn’s motivational framework. The implication for improving the Chinese workforce, in particular blue-collar occupations, is discussed.

Personalised social matching systems can be seen as recommender systems that recommend people to others in the social networks. However, with the rapid growth of users in social networks and the information that a social matching system requires about the users, recommender system techniques have become insufficiently adept at matching users in social networks. This paper presents a hybrid social matching system that takes advantage of both collaborative and content-based concepts of recommendation. The clustering technique is used to reduce the number of users that the matching system needs to consider and to overcome other problems from which social matching systems suffer, such as cold start problem due to the absence of implicit information about a new user. The proposed system has been evaluated on a dataset obtained from an online dating website. Empirical analysis shows that accuracy of the matching process is increased, using both user information (explicit data) and user behavior (implicit data).

Anthropometric assessment is a simple, safe, and cost-efficient method to examine the health status of individu-als. The Japanese obesity classification based on the sum of two skin folds (Σ2SF) was proposed nearly 40 years ago therefore its applicability to Japanese living today is unknown. The current study aimed to determine Σ2SF cut-off values that correspond to percent body fat (%BF) and BMI values using two datasets from young Japa-nese adults (233 males and 139 females). Using regression analysis, Σ2SF and height-corrected Σ2SF (HtΣ2SF) values that correspond to %BF of 20, 25, and 30% for males and 30, 35, and 40% for females were determined. In addition, cut-off values of both Σ2SF and HtΣ2SF that correspond to BMI values of 23 kg/m2, 25 kg/m2 and 30 kg/m2 were determined. In comparison with the original Σ2SF values, the proposed values are smaller by about 10 mm at maximum. The proposed values show an improvement in sensitivity from about 25% to above 90% to identify individuals with ≥20% body fat in males and ≥30% body fat in females with high specificity of about 95% in both genders. The results indicate that the original Σ2SF cut-off values to screen obese individuals cannot be applied to young Japanese adults living today and modification is required. Application of the pro-posed values may assist screening in the clinical setting.

Despite substantial investment by governments in social marketing campaigns and the introduction of various legislative and supply controls on alcohol, the binge drinking phenomenon amongst young people continues unabated in many countries and appears to be spreading to others. This paper examines drinking behaviour amongst university students from 50 countries across Europe, North America and the Asia Pacific region and argues that more needs to be done in understanding socio-cultural factors. To date, little is known of the specific socio-cultural factors that are common in countries that have high drinking behaviour compared to countries that have moderate bingedrinking behaviour. Using a marketing systems approach, this exploratory study identifies two key themes that distinguish these countries, namely family influences and peer influences.

The perceived benefits of Wellness Education in University environments are substantiated by a number of studies in relation to the place, impact and purpose of Wellness curricula. Many authors recommend that Wellness curriculum design must include personal experiences, reflective practice and active self-managed learning approaches in order to legitimise the adoption of Wellness as a personal lifestyle approach. Wellness Education provides opportunities to engage in learning self-regulation skills both within and beyond the context of the Wellness construct. Learner success is optimised by creating authentic opportunities to develop and practice self regulation strategies that facilitate making meaning of life's experiences. Such opportunities include provision of options for self determined outcomes and are scaffolded according to learner needs; thus, configuring a learner-centred curriculum in Wellness Education would potentially benefit by overlaying principles from the domains of Self Determination Theory, Self Regulated Learning and Transformative Education Theory to highlight authentic, transformative learning as a lifelong approach to Wellness.

Objective: Regeneration of osseous defects by tissue-engineering or cell delivery approach provides a novel means of treatment utilizing cell biology, materials sciences, and molecular biology. The concept of in vitro explanted mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with an ability to induce new bone formation has been demonstrated in some small animal models. However, contradictory results have been reported regarding the regenerative capacity of MSCs after ex vivo expansion due to the lack of the understanding of microenvironment for MSC differentiation in vivo. ----- ----- Methods: In our laboratory tissue-derived and bone marrow-derived MSCs have been investigated in their osteogenesis. Cell morphology and proliferation were studied by microscopy, confocal microscopy, FACS and cell counting. Cell differentiation and matrix formation were analysed by matrix staining, quantitative PCR, and immunohistochemistry. A SCID skull defect model was used for cell transplantation studies.----- ----- Results: It was noted that tissue-derived and bone marrow-derived MSCs showed similar characteristics in cell surface marker expression, mesenchymal lineage differentiation potential, and cell population doubling. MSCs from both sources could initiate new bone formation in bone defects after delivery into a critical size defects. The bone forming cells were from both transplanted cells and endogenous cells from the host. Interestingly, the majority of in vitro osteogenic differentiated cells did not form new bone directly even though mineralized matrix was synthesized in vitro by MSCs. Furthermore, no new bone formation was detected when MSCs were transplanted subcutaneously.----- ----- Conclusion: This study unveiled the limitations of MSC delivery in bone regeneration and proposed that in vivo microenvironment needs to be optimized for MSC delivery in osteogenesis.
