By means of a mod(N)-invariant operator basis, s-parametrized phase-space functions associated with bounded operators in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space are introduced in the context of the extended Cahill-Glauber formalism, and their properties are discussed in details. The discrete Glauber-Sudarshan, Wigner, and Husimi functions emerge from this formalism as specific cases of s-parametrized phase-space functions where, in particular, a hierarchical process among them is promptly established. In addition, a phase-space description of quantum tomography and quantum teleportation is presented and new results are obtained.

Abundant conchostracans occur in Coniacian-Santonian dark grey, argillaceous, lacustrine sediments of the Sao Carlos Formation, Bauru Group, Parana Basin, in the central part of São Paulo State, south-east Brazil. They are ascribed to a new genus and species, Bauruestheria sancarlensis, included in the family Jilinestheriidae. The new taxon is similar to some Late Cretaceous species from China and Mongolia. It probably evolved from a Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous ancestral form (Migransia), which first lived in West Gondwana, and later dispersed to Europe and Asia, originating distinct parallel lineages with increasing ornamental complexity. The conchostracans probably lived in oxygenated marginal areas of a very calm, perennial lake with an anoxic bottom, and were transported in suspension to the depositional site by weak turbidity currents or storm-induced flows. Great concentrations of juvenile conchostracans in some thin layers can be related to mass mortality, episodes caused by convection and dispersion of anoxic water during storms. This paper deals with two aspects of relativistic cosmologies with closed spatial sections. These spacetimes are based on the theory of general relativity, and admit a foliation into space sections S(t), which are spacelike hypersurfaces satisfying the postulate of the closure of space: each S(t) is a three-dimensional closed Riemannian manifold. The topics discussed are: (i) a comparison, previously obtained, between Thurston geometries and Bianchi-Kantowski-Sachs metrics for such three-manifolds is here clarified and developed; and (ii) the implications of global inhomogeneity for locally homogeneous three-spaces of constant curvature are analyzed from an observational viewpoint.

In the book Conceptual Spaces: the Geometry of Thought [2000] Peter Gärdenfors proposes a new framework for cognitive science. Complementary to symbolic and subsymbolic [connectionist] descriptions, conceptual spaces are semantic structures constructed from empirical data representing the universe of mental states. We argue that Gärdenfors' modeling can be used in consciousness research to describe the phenomenal conscious world, its elements and their intrinsic relations. The conceptual space approach affords the construction of a universal state space of human consciousness, where all possible kinds of human conscious states could be mapped. Starting from this approach, we discuss the inclusion of feelings and emotions in conceptual spaces, and their relation to perceptual and cognitive states. Current debate on integration of affect/emotion and perception/cognition allows three possible descriptive alternatives: emotion resulting from basic cognition; cognition resulting from basic emotion, and both as relatively independent functions integrated by brain mechanisms. Finding a solution for this issue is an important step in any attempt of successful modeling of natural or artificial consciousness. After making a brief review of proposals in this area, we summarize the essentials of a new model of consciousness based on neuro-astroglial interactions. © 2011 World Scientific Publishing Company.

The uses of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Web environments for creation, treatment and availability of information have supported the emergence of new social-cultural patterns represented by convergences in textual, image and audio languages. This paper describes and analyzes the National Archives Experience Digital Vaults as a digital publishing web environment and as a cultural heritage. It is a complex system - synthesizer of information design options at information setting, provides new aesthetic aspects, but specially enlarges the cognition of the subjects who interact with the environment. It also enlarges the institutional spaces that guard the collective memory beyond its role of keeping the physical patrimony collected there. Digital Vaults lies as a mix of guide and interactive catalogue to be dealt in a ludic way. The publishing design of the information held on the Archives is meant to facilitate access to knowledge. The documents are organized in a dynamic and not chronological way. They are not divided in fonds or distinct categories, but in controlled interaction of documents previously indexed and linked by the software. The software creates information design and view of documental content that can be considered a new paradigm in Information Science and are part of post-custodial regime, independent from physical spaces and institutions. Information professionals must be prepared to understand and work with the paradigmatic changes described and represented by the new hybrid digital environments; hence the importance of this paper. Cyberspace interactivity between user and the content provided by the environment design provide cooperation, collaboration and sharing knowledge actions, all features of networks, transforming culture globally. © 2011 - IOS Press and the authors. The Brazilian Network for Continuous Monitoring of GNSS - RBMC is a national network of continuously operating reference GNSS stations. Since its establishment in December of 1996, it has been playing an essential role for the maintenance and user access of the fundamental geodetic frame in the country. In order to provide better services for RBMC, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE and the National Institute of Colonization and Land Reform - INCRA are both partners involved in the National Geospatial Framework Project - PIGN. This paper provides an overview of the recent modernization phases the RBMC network has undergone highlighting its future steps. These steps involve the installation of new equipment, provide real time data from a group of core stations and compute real-time DGPS corrections, based on CDGPS (The real-time Canada-Wide DGPS Service) (The Real-Time Canada-Wide DGPS Service. http://www.cdgps.com/ 2009a). In addition to this, a post-mission Precise Point Positioning (PPP) service has been established based on the current Geodetic Survey Division of NRCan (CSRS-PPP) service. This service is operational since April 2009 and is in large use in the country. All activities mentioned before are based on a cooperation signed at the end of 2004 with the University of New Brunswick, supported by the Canadian International Development Agency and the Brazilian Cooperation Agency. The Geodetic Survey Division of NRCan is also participating in this modernization effort under the same project. This infrastructure of 66 GNSS stations, the real time, post processing services and the potentiality of providing Wide Area DGPS corrections in the future show that the RBMC system is comparable to those available in USA and Europe. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

A search for physics beyond the standard model involving events with one or more photons, jets, and missing transverse energy has been performed by the CMS experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.93 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at √s =7 TeV, produced at the Large Hadron Collider. No excess of events with large missing transverse energy is observed beyond expectations from standard model processes, and upper limits on the signal production cross sections for new physics processes are set at the 95% confidence level. The results of this search are interpreted in the context of three models of new physics: a general model of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, Simplified Models, and a theory involving universal extra dimensions. In the absence of evidence for new physics, exclusion regions are derived in the parameter spaces of the respective models.[Figure not available: see fulltext.] © 2013 CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration.

A new tropane alkaloid, named the 7β-acetoxy-3β,6β- dibenzoyloxytropane (1), was isolated from a methanol extract of Erythroxylum rimosum O.E. Schulz leaves. Other known compounds were detected, including quercetin, kaempferol-3-O-α-l-arabinofuranoside, (+)-catechin, epicatechin, quercetin-3-O-α-arabinofuranoside, quercetin-3-O-α- arabinopyranoside, quercetin-3-O-β-arabinopyranoside, quercetin-3-β- glucopyranoside, kaempferol, quercetin-3-O-β-galactopyranoside, β-sitosterol, α-amyrin, β-amyrin, and the ester derivatives of these two amyrins. Compound 1 exhibited weak inhibition of acetylcholinesterase. Structural identification was performed using IR, ESIHRMS and one- and two-dimensional NMR data analyses and confirmed by comparison with literature data. © 2013 Phytochemical Society of Europe.

Este artigo tem como base informações de uma série histórica de exsicatas datadas de 1819 a 2002, reunindo contribuições de pesquisadores de instituições governamentais e não governamentais das Américas do Norte, do Sul e Europa. Tem foco nas verbenáceas, pela reconhecida gama de espécies aromáticas e medicinais desta família e o seu reconhecido uso no Brasil. Analisa notas descritivas e críticas sobre a coleção do New York Botanical Garden referente à Amazônia, revelando o espírito da cooperação entre instituições brasileiras e estrangeiras nesta região. Alterações do meio ambiente, rede de pesquisadores, mudanças na linguagem, na tecnologia dos registros e absorção de termos regionais são detectados ao longo de quase dois séculos de trabalho científico em que se projeta a formação continuada de cientistas e a interação com saberes locais.

Paisagens Urbanas: fotografia e modernidade na cidade de Belém (1846-1908) propõe uma discussão sobre os documentos fotográficos que serviam de instrumentos de propaganda dos governantes na última década do século XIX e no início do século XX. A linguagem visual desta dissertação permite mostrar a forma como os indivíduos se fizeram representar nos cenários urbanos, dando visibilidade aos tipos sociais que foram flagrados sutilmente pelas câmeras fotográficas a serviço da propaganda do governo que tinha por objetivo divulgar uma cidade moderna, revelando a intensidade e a rapidez com que desejava alcançar a modernidade, ao mesmo tempo em que traz a luz uma cidade de acordo com os modelos provenientes da Europa, percebe-se o registro de uma outra cidade que nos remete a espaços de convivência de diferentes realidades. A imagem fotográfica, assim como outras fontes e objetos visuais, constitui-se em importantes instrumentos de investigação histórica para identificar novos objetos e novos problemas. A contribuição deste estudo se ancora no uso da fotografia como principal documento de análise para produção historiográfica, entendendo que a fotografia representa um testemunho que “fala” do passado na intensidade que o historiador a questiona. Este estudo busca analisar a relação entre fotografia e cidade a partir da narrativa visual dos álbuns e relatórios de Belém que foram produzidos no período de 1898 a 1908. A interpretação dos álbuns, enquanto narrativa que visualiza uma cidade moderna, constituí-se em uma das estratégias metodológicas para abordagem do uso da fotografia como documento para o historiador, considerando que nesse tipo de documentação pode mostrar dados dispersos ou mesmo silenciados por outras fontes de pesquisas.

Este estudo propõe uma análise das iconografias urbanas de Belém, produzidas no decorrer do século XIX e início do XX. A tese tem por objetivo, então, analisar a representação da natureza em Belém, especificamente nos anos de 1808 a 1908. O compromisso inicial desse estudo se concentrou em pesquisar os diversos tipos de iconografias sobre Belém no decorrer dos Oitocentos. As questões que se procurou evidenciar tratam sobre a forma como os viajantes apreenderam a cidade, em sua passagem por Belém, tanto sob o ponto de vista narrativo quanto o visual, até os anos de 1890. A partir de então, também identificar como os governantes promoveram a cidade para além da região Amazônica. Observa-se que a natureza brasileira passou a ser representada, a partir do século XIX, por meio de linguagem escrita e iconográfica, isto graças à influência do cientificismo e da sensibilidade artística romântica, que perpassaram pelo conhecimento do país. A sensibilidade romântica realizou a aproximação entre ciência e estética ao apreender e representar a natureza, numa visão totalizante, inaugurando uma nova concepção de paisagem e a tentativa de “inventar” e visualizar uma natureza urbana, a qual é tema principal desse estudo; representa o fenômeno da urbanização que foi registrado, especialmente, por meio da fotografia. Nesse tipo de fotografias, a natureza aparece domesticada, adaptada ao desenho urbano, sua forma artificiosa e geométrica é valorizada. A fotografia urbana do final do século XIX reintroduz o “belo ideal” nas imagens da natureza ordenada segundo o modelo dos jardins franceses, ingleses e italianos. Parto do pressuposto de que a contemplação da natureza é adaptada para a realidade da região Amazônica, embora estivessem presentes modelos provenientes da Europa, mas encontram as suas especificidades a partir de uma natureza exuberante da Amazônia A percepção de natureza na Amazônia da segunda metade do século XIX e a influência de novas formas de conceber a natureza foram projetadas para as cidades na reformulação dos espaços para constituir a área verde, especialmente de Belém. Pensar historicamente a representação da natureza é refletir sobre a sua apropriação pela ação humana ao mesmo tempo em que diferentes indivíduos e grupos sociais circularam e deixaram suas marcas específicas nos lugares construídos a partir de uma natureza domesticada na paisagem urbana.
