Pseudoternary phase diagrams, at 25 degrees C, were constructed for the systems soy bean oil (SBO)/surfactant/water, with single anionic sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT), nonionic monoolein (MO) and mixtures of these surfactants, showing the isotropic phase of W/O microemulsions (MEs). The area of ME formation in the phase diagrams was shown to be dependent of the relative amount of surfactants, being larger for MO:AOT equals to 2:1. Rheological and dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies indicated that the viscosity of the isotropic ME phase exhibited two different behaviors depending on composition. The viscosity of dry MEs initially decreased with increasing amount of water following a dilution line in the phase diagram, i.e., a constant surfactant:SBO percentage ratio. As the water content increased the relative viscosity attained a minimum and then increased. This minimum could be related to the transition between two ME regions, L-2 and L'(2), having different characteristics. DLS measurements confirm the existence of ordinary W/O ME droplets in the L-2 region and suggest the existence of another structure in the L'(2) region. The size of the MEs droplets in L-2 phase ranges from 3.6 to 16.5 nm, depending on composition of SBO, surfactant and water. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) also indicates the existence of structures with different characteristics, for the SAXS curves exhibit a typical micelle asymmetrical peak at low scattering vector q for MEs in L-2 but a symmetrical correlation peak at higher q vector in L'(2). Paw edema was induced in male Wistar rats (200-250 g) by intraplantar (ipl) administration of 2.5 mu g endotoxin (Etx). Etx, like carrageenin, produced two distinct edema formation phases, an early phase (75 min) followed by a late phase (7 h). We showed that the edema formation in the early phase was antagonized by dipyrone (80 mg/kg, ip) and indomethacin (1 mg/kg, ip) by 52% and 55%, respectively, and that the late phase was resistant to these drugs. These results suggest that in the early phase prostaglandins appear to be involved in the process. However, the activation of the kinin cascade leading to the release of other mediators may be involved in the increase of edema in the late phase. To test this hypothesis, we investigated whether the release of nitric oxide (NO) is involved in the mechanism of endotoxin-induced rat paw edema during the late phase, using N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (50 mu g, ipl) as inhibitor of NO synthase and L-arginine (1 mg, ipl) as substrate of NO synthase. The paw edema induced by Etx was inhibited by L-NAME by 56% and increased by L-arginine by 81%. Furthermore, L-arginine given in combination with L-NAME completely reversed the inhibition of Etx-induced edema produced by L-NAME. These results support the hypothesis that in the late phase NO production is associated with the edema evoked by Etx.

In this work, a series of transparent di-ureasil hybrids containing different amounts of methacrylic acid modified zirconium tetrapropoxide (ZrMcOH) nanoclusters (5-85 mol%) and incorporating EuCl3 and [Eu(tta)(3)(H2O)(2)](tta = thenoyltrifluoroacetonate) complex were prepared. These hybrids are multi-wave-length emitters due to the convolution of the host intrinsic emission (electron-hole recombinations occurring in siliceous and urea cross-linkages) Eu3+ intra-4f(6) transitions. The ZrMcOH incorporation deviates the maximum excitation wavelength of the hybrid host intrinsic emission from the UV (365 nm) to the blue (420 nm) and enhances the absolute emission quantum yield from 6.0 +/- 0.6% to 9.0 +/- 0.9%, and contributes to an increase in the D-5(0) lifetime values, quantum efficiency due to a decrease in the non-radiative transition probability and OH groups coordinated to the Eu3+ ions. The PKC1 gene in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae encodes protein kinase C that is known to control a mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase cascade consisting of Bck1, Mkk1 and Mkk2, and Mpk1. This cascade affects the cell wall integrity but the phenotype of Pkc1 mutants suggests additional targets which have not yet been identified. We show that a pkc1Δ mutant, as opposed to mutants in the MAP kinase cascade, displays two major defects in the control of carbon metabolism. It shows a delay in the initiation of fermentation upon addition of glucose and a defect in derepression of SUC2 gene after exhaustion of glucose from the medium. After addition of glucose the production of both ethanol and glycerol started very slowly. The V max of glucose transport dropped considerably and Northern blot analysis showed that induction of the HXT1, HXT2 and HXT4 genes was strongly reduced. Growth of the pkc1Δ mutant was absent on glycerol and poor on galactose and raffinose. Oxygen uptake was barely present. Derepression of invertase activity and SUC2 transcription upon transfer of cells from glucose to raffinose was deficient in the pkc1Δ mutant as opposed to the wild-type. Our results suggest an involvement of Pkc1p in the control of carbon metabolism which is not shared by the downstream MAP kinase cascade. © 2002 Federation of European Microbiological Societies. A large portion of Brazil is covered with tropical soils but literature about dynamic parameters of these soils is very limited. SCPT and cross-hole tests were carried out at an experimental research site inland in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Shear wave velocities (VS) determined based on both tests are presented and compared. A good agreement was observed between both test results and the differences can be associated with soil variability, which was very sensitive to CPT tests. It was also observed that Go/q c ratio determined based on SCPT appears to be an interesting technique to help identify tropical soils. Copyright ASCE 2006.

The aim of this experiment was to study the influence of several levels of magnesium on development and essential oil content of basil, plants were cultivated using Hoagland and Arnon (1950) number one 1 complete solution, containing 48.6 mg L -1 and with decreasing levels of magnesium (24.3 mg L -1 and 12.1 mg L -1). The experimental design was completely randomized, in a factorial scheme 3x3, which is, three levels of magnesium and three harvest times, with three replications each. The parameters evaluated were the stem length, leaf dry mass, stem dry mass, roots dry mass, absolute growth rate (AGR), relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilatory rate (NAR), leaf area ratio (LAR), leaf mass ratio (LMR), dry mass distribution on several organs, stem and leaf/root ratio and essential oil yield, all those measured in three harvest time 30, 60 and 90 days after transplantation (DAT). Plants cultivated with the lower levels of magnesium showed no symptoms of deficiency, but showed differences in the parameters studied. Essential oil yield was higher at 30 DAT for plants cultivated with 12.1 mg L -1 the magnesium. Our results suggests that Hoagland and Arnon (1950) no 1 complete solution overestimates the level of magnesium, as has been observed in several other plant species.

We present a measurement of the ratio of positive to negative muon fluxes from cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere, using data collected by the CMS detector both at ground level and in the underground experimental cavern at the CERN LHC. Muons were detected in the momentum range from 5 GeV/. c to 1 TeV/. c. The surface flux ratio is measured to be 1.2766±0.0032(stat.)±0.0032(syst.), independent of the muon momentum, below 100 GeV/. c. This is the most precise measurement to date. At higher momenta the data are consistent with an increase of the charge ratio, in agreement with cosmic ray shower models and compatible with previous measurements by deep-underground experiments. © 2010.

A measurement of the underlying activity in scattering processes with pT scale in the GeV region is performed in proton-proton collisions at √ = 0.9 TeV, using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Charged particle production is studied with reference to the direction of a leading object, either a charged particle or a set of charged particles forming a jet. Predictions of several QCD-inspired models as implemented in PYTHIA are compared, after full detector simulation, to the data. The models generally predict too little production of charged particles with pseudorapidity {pipe}η{pipe} < 2, pT > 0.5 GeV/c, and azimuthal direction transverse to that of the leading object. © 2010 CERN for benefit of the CMS collaboration.

The production of J/ψ mesons is studied in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measurement is based on a dimuon sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 314 nb-1. The J/ψ differential cross section is determined, as a function of the J/ψ transverse momentum, in three rapidity ranges. A fit to the decay length distribution is used to separate the prompt from the non-prompt (b hadron to J/ψ) component. Integrated over J/ψ transverse momentum from 6.5 to 30 GeV/c and over rapidity in the range {pipe}y{pipe} < 2.4, the measured cross sections, times the dimuon decay branching fraction, are 70.9 ± 2.1(stat.) ± 3.0(syst.) ± 7.8(luminosity) nb for prompt J/ψ mesons assuming unpolarized production and 26.0 ± 1.4(stat.) ± 1.6(syst.) ± 2.9(luminosity) nb for J/ψ mesons from b-hadron decays. © CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration 2011.

First measurements of dihadron correlations for charged particles are presented for central PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity (Δν) and the full range of relative azimuthal angle (Δø). The data were collected with the CMS detector, at the LHC. A broadening of the away-side (Δø y≈ π) azimuthal correlation is observed at all Δν, as compared to the measurements in pp collisions. Furthermore, long-range dihadron correlations in Δν are observed for particles with similar ø values. This phenomenon, also known as the \ridge, persists up to at least jΔνj = 4. For particles with transverse momenta (pT) of 2-4 GeV/c, the ridge is found to be most prominent when these particles are correlated with particles of pT = 2-6 GeV/c, and to be much reduced when paired with particles of pT = 10-12 GeV/c. Measurements of inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV are presented, based on 2.9 pb-1 of data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurements, performed in the electron and muon decay channels, are combined to give σ(pp → WX) × B(W → l?) = 9.95 ± 0.07 (stat.) ± 0.28 (syst.) ± 1.09 (lumi.) nb and σ(pp → ZX) × B(Z → l +l-) = 0.931 ± 0.026 (stat.) ± 0.023 (syst.) ± 0.102 (lumi.) nb, where l stands for either e or μ. Theoretical predictions, calculated at the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD using recent parton distribution functions, are in agreement with the measured cross sections. Ratios of cross sections, which incur an experimental systematic uncertainty of less than 4%, are also reported.

The Drell-Yan differential cross section is measured in pp collisions at √ s = 7TeV, from a data sample collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. The cross section measurement, normalized to the measured cross section in the Z region, is reported for both the dimuon and dielectron channels in the dilepton invariant mass range 15{600 GeV. The normalized cross section values are quoted both in the full phase space and within the detector acceptance. The effect of final state radiation is also identified. The results are found to agree with theoretical predictions. Copyright CERN.

The charged particle transverse momentum (pT) spectra are presented for pp collisions at √s = 0:9 and 7TeV. The data samples were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to integrated luminosities of 231 μb-1 and 2.96 pb-1, respectively. Calorimeter-based high-transverse-energy triggers are employed to enhance the statistical reach of the high-pT measurements. The results are compared with leading and next-toleading order QCD and with an empirical scaling of measurements at different collision energies using the scaling variable xT - 2pT=ps over the pT range up to 136 GeV/c. Using a combination of xT scaling and direct interpolation at fixed pT, a reference transverse momentum spectrum at √s = 2:76TeV is constructed, which can be used for studying high-pT particle suppression in the dense QCD medium produced in heavy-ion collisions at that centre-of-mass energy.
