A water soluble third generation poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimer was examined for its ability to solubilize hydrophobic polyaromatic molecules in water and facilitate non-radiative resonance energy transfer between them. One to two orders of magnitude higher aqueous solubilities of pyrene (PY), perylene (PE), acridine yellow (AY) and acridine orange (AO) were observed in presence of a defined concentration of the dendrimer. A reduction in the quantum yield of the donor PY* emission and a partial decrease in lifetime of the donor excited state revealed the occurrence of energy transfer from dendrimer solubilized excited PY to ground state PE molecules, both present within a dendrimer. The energy transfer efficiency was estimated to be similar to 61%. A cascade resonance energy transfer in a three component system, PY*-to-PE-to-AY and PY*-to-PE-to-AO, was demonstrated through incorporation of AY or AO in the two component PY-PE system. In the three-component system, excitation of PY resulted in emission from AY or AO via a cascade energy transfer process. Careful choice of dye molecules with good spectral overlap and the employment of dendrimer as the medium enabled us to expand absorption-emission wavelengths, from similar to 330 nm to similar to 600 nm in aqueous solution. In this paper, we study the exact controllability of a second order linear evolution equation in a domain with highly oscillating boundary with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition on the oscillating part of boundary. Our aim is to obtain the exact controllability for the homogenized equation. The limit problem with Neumann condition on the oscillating boundary is different and hence we need to study the exact controllability of this new type of problem. In the process of homogenization, we also study the asymptotic analysis of evolution equation in two setups, namely solution by standard weak formulation and solution by transposition method.

Graphene oxide-CoFe2O4 nanoparticle composites were synthesized using a two step synthesis method in which graphene oxide was initially synthesized followed by precipitation of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles in a reaction mixture containing graphene oxide. Samples were extracted from the reaction mixture at different times at 80 degrees C. All the extracted samples contained CoFe2O4 nanoparticles formed over the graphene oxide. It was observed that the increase in the reflux time significantly increased the saturation magnetization value for the superparamagnetic nanoparticles in the composite. It was also noticed that the size of the nanoparticles increased with increase in the reflux time. Transverse relaxivity of the water protons increased monotonically with increase in the reflux time. Whereas, the longitudinal relaxivity value initially increased and then decreased with the reflux time. Graphene oxide-CoFe2O4 nanoparticle composites also exhibit biocompatibility towards the MCF-7 cell line.

We study an s-channel resonance R as a viable candidate to fit the diboson excess reported by ATLAS. We compute the contribution of the similar to 2 TeV resonance R to semileptonic and leptonic final states at the 13 TeV LHC. To explain the absence of an excess in the semileptonic channel, we explore the possibility where the particle R decays to additional light scalars X, X or X, Y. A modified analysis strategy has been proposed to study the three-particle final state of the resonance decay and to identify decay channels of X. Associated production of R with gauge bosons has been studied in detail to identify the production mechanism of R. We construct comprehensive categories for vector and scalar beyond-standard-model particles which may play the role of particles R, X, Y and find alternate channels to fix the new couplings and search for these particles.

Using a refined two-dimensional hybrid-model with self-consistent microwave absorption, we have investigated the change of plasma parameters such as plasma density and ionization rate with the operating conditions. The dependence of the ion current density and ion energy and angle distribution function at the substrate surface vs. the radial position, pressure and microwave power were discussed. Results of our simulation can be compared qualitatively with many experimental measurements.

In order to monitor multiple protein reaction processes simultaneously, a biosensor based on imaging ellipsometry operated in the total internal reflection mode is proposed. It could be realised as an automatic analysis for protein interaction processes with real-time label-free method. Its principle and methodology as well as a demonstration for its applications are presented.

Based on the internal variable theory, a viscoelastic constitutive model of a highly deformable continuous medium is proposed. A set of second rank tensorial internal state variables corresponding to Biot's strain is introduced, and a nonlinear evolution

The deposition of hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC:H) films from a mixture of silane, acetylene and hydrogen gas using the electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapour deposition (ECR-CVD) process is reported. The variation in the deposition and film characteristics such as the deposition rate, optical band gap and IR absorption as a function of the hydrogen dilution is investigated. The deposition rate increases to a maximum value of about 250 Å min-1 at a hydrogen dilution ratio of about 20 (hydrogen flow (sccm)/acetylene + silane flow (sccm)) and decreases in response to a further increase in the hydrogen dilution. There is no strong dependence of the optical band gap on the hydrogen dilution within the dilution range investigated (10-60) and the optical band gap calculated from the E04 method varied marginally from about 2.85 to 3.17 eV. The room temperature photoluminescence (PL) peak energy and intensity showed a prominent shift to a maximum value of about 2.17 eV corresponding to maximum PL intensity at a moderate hydrogen dilution of about 30. The PL intensity showed a strong dependence on the hydrogen dilution variation.

This paper demonstrates the respective roles that combined index- and gain-coupling play in the overall link performance of distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. Their impacts on both static and dynamic properties such as slope efficiency, resonance frequency, damping rate, and chirp are investigated. Simulation results are compared with experimental data with good agreement. Transmission-oriented optimization is then demonstrated based on a targeted specification. The design tradeoffs are revealed, and it is shown that a modest combination of index- and gain-coupling enables optimum transmission at 10 Gbit/s.

The anisotropic nature of fibre reinforced composites leads to large stress concentrations around pin-loaded holes through standard weave cloths. Proper understanding of how this anisotropic nature affects the load distribution around holes can be utilised to reduce these con-centrations if sufficient thought is given to the internal fibre geometry near to the hole. Such local reinforcements need not be highly complex and can be readily produced without excessive effort, producing significant improvements in performance. © 1996 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

A compact electron cyclotron wave resonance (ECWR) source has been developed for the high rate deposition of hydrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:H). The ECWR provides growth rates of up to 1.5 nm/s over a 4-inch diameter and an independent control of the deposition rate and ion energy. The ta-C:H was deposited using acetylene as the source gas and was characterized as having an sp3 content of up to 77%, plasmon energy of 27 eV, refractive index of 2.45, hydrogen content of about 30%, optical gap of up to 2.1 eV and RMS surface roughness of 0.04 nm. © 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. A compact electron cyclotron wave resonance (ECWR) source has been developed for the high rate deposition of hydrogenated tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:H). The ECWR provides growth rates of up to 900 Å/min over a 4″ diameter and an independent control of the deposition rate and ion energy. The ta-C:H was deposited using acetylene as the source gas and was characterized in terms of its sp3 content, mass density, intrinsic stress, hydrogen content, C-H bonding, Raman spectra, optical gap, surface roughness and friction coefficient. The results obtained indicated that the film properties were maximized at an ion energy of approximately 167 eV, corresponding to an energy per daughter carbon ion of 76 eV. The relationship between the incident ion energy and film densification was also explained in terms of the subsurface implantation of carbon ions into the growing film.
