Reconstructions in optical tomography involve obtaining the images of absorption and reduced scattering coefficients. The integrated intensity data has greater sensitivity to absorption coefficient variations than scattering coefficient. However, the sensitivity of intensity data to scattering coefficient is not zero. We considered an object with two inhomogeneities (one in absorption and the other in scattering coefficient). The standard iterative reconstruction techniques produced results, which were plagued by cross talk, i.e., the absorption coefficient reconstruction has a false positive corresponding to the location of scattering inhomogeneity, and vice-versa. We present a method to remove cross talk in the reconstruction, by generating a weight matrix and weighting the update vector during the iteration. The weight matrix is created by the following method: we first perform a simple backprojection of the difference between the experimental and corresponding homogeneous intensity data. The built up image has greater weightage towards absorption inhomogeneity than the scattering inhomogeneity and its appropriate inverse is weighted towards the scattering inhomogeneity. These two weight matrices are used as multiplication factors in the update vectors, normalized backprojected image of difference intensity for absorption inhomogeneity and the inverse of the above for the scattering inhomogeneity, during the image reconstruction procedure. We demonstrate through numerical simulations, that cross-talk is fully eliminated through this modified reconstruction procedure.

Denoising of images in compressed wavelet domain has potential application in transmission technology such as mobile communication. In this paper, we present a new image denoising scheme based on restoration of bit-planes of wavelet coefficients in compressed domain. It exploits the fundamental property of wavelet transform - its ability to analyze the image at different resolution levels and the edge information associated with each band. The proposed scheme relies on the fact that noise commonly manifests itself as a fine-grained structure in image and wavelet transform allows the restoration strategy to adapt itself according to directional features of edges. The proposed approach shows promising results when compared with conventional unrestored scheme, in context of error reduction and has capability to adapt to situations where noise level in the image varies. The applicability of the proposed approach has implications in restoration of images due to noisy channels. This scheme, in addition, to being very flexible, tries to retain all the features, including edges of the image. The proposed scheme is computationally efficient.

Purpose: To assess the effect of ultrasound modulation of near infrared (NIR) light on the quantification of scattering coefficient in tissue-mimicking biological phantoms. Methods: A unique method to estimate the phase of the modulated NIR light making use of only time averaged intensity measurements using a charge coupled device camera is used in this investigation. These experimental measurements from tissue-mimicking biological phantoms are used to estimate the differential pathlength, in turn leading to estimation of optical scattering coefficient. A Monte-Carlo model base numerical estimation of phase in lieu of ultrasound modulation is performed to verify the experimental results. Results: The results indicate that the ultrasound modulation of NIR light enhances the effective scattering coefficient. The observed effective scattering coefficient enhancement in tissue-mimicking viscoelastic phantoms increases with increasing ultrasound drive voltage. The same trend is noticed as the ultrasound modulation frequency approaches the natural vibration frequency of the phantom material. The contrast enhancement is less for the stiffer (larger storage modulus) tissue, mimicking tumor necrotic core, compared to the normal tissue. Conclusions: The ultrasound modulation of the insonified region leads to an increase in the effective number of scattering events experienced by NIR light, increasing the measured phase, causing the enhancement in the effective scattering coefficient. The ultrasound modulation of NIR light could provide better estimation of scattering coefficient. The observed local enhancement of the effective scattering coefficient, in the ultrasound focal region, is validated using both experimental measurements and Monte-Carlo simulations. Experimental studies are presented to show the effect of thermal stresses on thermal contact conductance (TCC) at low contact pressures. It is observed that in a closed contact assembly, contact pressure acting on the interface changes with the changing temperature of contact members. This change in contact pressure consequently causes variations in the TCC of the junction. A relationship between temperature change and the corresponding magnitude of developed thermal stress in a contact assembly is determined experimentally. Inclusion of a term called temperature dependent load correction factor is suggested in the theoretical model for TCC to make it capable of predicting TCC values more accurately in contact assemblies that experience large temperature fluctuations. Photoacoustic (PA) technique is used to study glass transition and temperature dependence of thermal diffusivity in AsxTe1-x glasses with 0.25 0.60. PA amplitude goes through a minimum and the phase shows a maximum at glass transition temperature Tg. The variation of thermal diffusivity with temperature shows sharp decrease near Tg. The variation of thermal diffusivity with composition shows maximum at = 0.40 for all temperatures T Tg.

The two dimensional plane can be filled with rhombuses, so as to generate non-periodic tilings with 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12-fold symmetries. Some representative tilings constructed using the rule of inflation are shown. The numerically computed diffraction patterns for the corresponding tilings are also shown to facilitate a comparison with possible X-ray or electron diffraction pictures.

The imaging performance of hololenses formed with four different geometries were studied through an analysis of their third-order aberration coefficients. It is found that the geometry proposed by Brandt (1969) gives the least residual aberration with minimum variation of this aberration with the reconstruction angle. When the ideal position of one of the construction beams is changed in order to generate a hololens array, the residual aberration is found to increase sharply, which in turn affects the image resolution among the multiplied images in the output. A hololens array was generated using Brandt's geometry with the help of a one-dimensional sinusoidal grating. The results of multiple imaging with the hololens array are presented. The image resolution is reasonably high and can be further improved by reducing the f-number of the hololenses.

Strain and temperature sensitivities of a type I Bragg grating inscribed in a germania doped silica fiber, fabricated under normal conditions and zero strain, are compared with that of a Bragg grating inscribed under pre-strained condition. The results obtained reveal that the strain and temperature sensitivities of the two gratings are different. Based on these results, we demonstrate a technique which enables discrimination of strain and temperature in a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) with a linear response. The present technique allows for an easy implementation of the sensor by providing a direct access to the grating region in the fiber and demands only a simple interrogation system.

This paper describes the design and development of a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor system for monitoring tsunami waves generated in the deep ocean. An experimental setup was designed and fabricated to simulate the generation and propagation of a tsunami wave. The characteristics and efficiency of the developed FBG sensor was evaluated with a standard commercial Digiquartz sensor. For real time monitoring of tsunami waves, FBG sensors bonded to a cantilever is used and the wavelength shifts (Delta lambda(B)) in the reflected spectra resulting from the strain/pressure imparted on the FBGs have been recorded using a high-speed Micron Optics FBG interrogation system. The parameters sensed are the signal burst during tsunami generation and pressure variations at different places as the tsunami wave propagates away from the source of generation. The results obtained were compared with the standard commercial sensor used in tsunami detection. The observations suggest that the FBG sensor was highly sensitive and free from many of the constraints associated with the commercial tsunameter.

The photoacoustic technique is used to determine the optical energy gap E0 of bulk SixTe100−x glasses in the glass-forming region 10 ≤ x ≤ 28. The thermal diffusivity α of these samples has also been measured. The variation of E0 and α with x is reported. It is found that E0 increases with x nearly linearly with a sharp decrease in the rate of increase beyond x = 20. The thermal diffusivity also increases with x up to x = 20 but decreases for compositions with higher values of x. The observed behaviour is explained on the basis of a chemical bond approach. It is accounted for in terms of the increase in the number of Te---Te bonds and formation of SiTe4 tetrahedra with an increase in the chalcogen content.

The formation of crystalline diamond films from amorphous diamond-like carbon films by pulsed laser irradiation with a 300 μs non-Q-switched Nd:YAG laser has been established by a combined study of transmission electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrical resistivity. The films have been prepared by glow discharge decomposition of a mixture of propane, n-butane, and hydrogen in a rf plasma operating at a frequency of 13.56 MHz. Prior to laser irradiation, the films have been found to be amorphous by transmission electron microscope studies. After irradiation, the electron diffraction patterns clearly point out the formation of cubic diamond structure with a lattice spacing of 3.555 Å. However, the close similarity between diamond and graphite electron diffraction patterns could sometimes be misleading regarding the formation of a diamond structure, and hence, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies have been carried out to confirm the results. A chemical shift in the C 1s core level binding energies towards higher values, viz., from 286.5 to 287.8 eV after laser irradiation, and a high electrical resistivity >1013 Ω cm are consistent with the growth of diamond structure. This novel "low-temperature, low-pressure" synthesis of diamond films offers enormous potential in terms of device compatibility with other solid-state devices.

The saturated liquid density, varrholr, data along the liquid vapour coexistence curve published in the literature for several cryogenic liquids, hydrocarbons and halocarbon refrigerants are fitted to a generalized equation of the following form varrholr = 1 + A(1 − Tr + B(1 − Tr)β The values of β, the index in phase density differences power law, have been obtained by means of two approaches namely statistical treatment of saturated fluid phase density difference data and the existence of a maximum in T(varrho1 − varrhov) along the saturation curve. Values of the constants A and B are determined utilizing the fact that Tvarrho1 has a maximum at a characteristic temperature T. Values of A, B and β are tabulated for Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, N2, O2, methane, ethane, propane, iso-butane, n-butane, propylene, ethylene, CO2, water, ammonia, refrigerants-11, 12, 12B1, 13, 13B1, 14, 21, 22, 23, 32, 40, 113, 114, 115, 142b, 152a, 216, 245 and azeotropes R-500, 502, 503, 504. Germanium nanowires were grown on Au coated Si substrates at 380 degrees C in a high vacuum (5 x 10(-5) Torr) by e-beam evaporation of Germanium (Ge). The morphology observation by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) shows that the grown nanowires are randomly oriented with an average length and diameter of 600 nm and 120 nm respectively for a deposition time of 60 min. The nanowire growth ratewas measured to be similar to 10 nm/min. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies revealed that the Ge nanowires were single crystalline in nature and further energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX) has shown that the tip of the grown nanowires was capped with Au nanoparticles, this shows that the growth of the Ge nanowires occurs by the vapour liquid solid (VLS) mechanism. HRTEM studies on the grown Ge nanowire show that they are single crystalline in nature and the growth direction was identified to be along [110]. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

With the rapid development of photovoltaic system installations and increased number of grid connected power systems, it has become imperative to develop an efficient grid interfacing instrumentation suitable for photovoltaic systems ensuring maximum power transfer. The losses in the power converter play an important role in the overall efficiency of a PV system. Chain cell converter is considered to be efficient as compared to PWM converters due to lower switching losses, modularized circuit layout, reduced voltage rating of the converter switches, reduced EMI. The structure of separate dc sources in chain cell converter is well suited for photovoltaic systems as there will b several separate PV modules in the PV array which can act as an individual dc source. In this work, a single phase multilevel chain cell converter is used to interface the photovoltaic array to a single phase grid at a frequency of 50Hz. Control algorithms are developed for efficient interfacing of the PV system with grid and isolating the PV system from grid under faulty conditions. Digital signal processor TMS320F 2812 is used to implement the control algorithms developed and for the generation of other control signals.
