I report on language variation in the unresearched variety of English emerging on Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia. English is spoken as the inter-island lingua franca throughout Micronesia and has been the official language of FSM since gaining its independence in 1986, though still retaining close ties with the US through and economic “compact” agreement. I present here an analysis of a corpus of over 90 Kosraean English speakers, compiled during a three month fieldwork trip to the island in the Western Pacific. The 45 minute sociolinguistically sensitive recordings are drawn from a corpus of old and young, with varying levels of education and occupations, and off-island experiences. In the paper I analyse two variables. The first variable is the realisation of /h/, often subject to deletion in both L1 and L2 varieties of English. Such occurrences are commonly associated with Cockney English, but also found in Caribbean English and the postcolonial English of Australia. For example:  Male, 31: yeah I build their house their local huts and they pay me /h/ deletion is frequent in Kosraean English, but, perhaps expectedly, occurs slightly less among people with higher contact with American English, through having spent longer periods off island. The second feature under scrutiny is the variable epenthesis of [h] to provide a consonantal onset to vowel-initial syllables.  Male, 31: that guy is really hold now This practice is also found beyond Kosraean English. Previous studies find h-epenthesis arising in L1 varieties including Newfoundland and Tristan de Cunha English, while similar manifestations are identified in Francophone L2 learners of English. My variationist statistical analysis has shown [h] insertion:  to disproportionately occur intervocalically;  to be constrained by both speaker gender and age: older males are much more likely to epenthesis [h] in their speech;  to be more likely in the onset of stressed as opposed to unstressed syllables. In light of the findings of my analysis, I consider the relationship between h-deletion and h-epenthesis, the plausibility of hypercorrection as a motivation for the variation, and the potential influence of the substrate language, alongside sociolinguistic factors such as attitudes towards the US based on mobility. The analysis sheds light on the extent to which different varieties share this characteristic and the comparability of them in terms of linguistic constraints and attributes. Clarke, S. (2010). The placenta is the site of synthesis of various peptide and steroid hormones related to pregnancy. Human placental lactogen (hPL) is the predominant peptide hormone secreted by term placenta and its synthesis is tissue-specific and coupled to placenta development. The objective of this work was to study the structure and expression of the hPL.^ Poly(A('+))RNA from human term placenta was translated in a mouse-derived cell-free system. A major band corresponding to pre-hPL and a minor band comigrating with mature hPL, represent (TURN)15% of the total radioactively labeled proteins. Analysis of the poly(A('+))RNA showed a prominent band at approximately 860 nucleotides. A corresponding band was observed in Northern blots of total RNA, hybridized with {('32)P}-labeled recombinant plasmid containing a portion of hPL cDNA. Similar analyses of nuclear RNA showed at least four additional bands at 990, 1200, 1460 and 1760 nucleotides, respectively, which are likely precursors of hPL mRNA. Poly(A('+))RNA was used to construct a cDNA library, of which approximately 5% of the clones were found to hybridize to hPL DNA sequences. Heteroduplexes constructed between a clone containing a 815 bp hPL cDNA insert and a hPL genomic DNA clone revealed four small intervening sequences which can account for the lengths observed in hnRNA molecules.^ Recombinant plasmid HCS-pBR322 containing a 550 bp insert of a cDNA transcript of human placental lactogen (hPL) mRNA was ('3)H-labeled an hybridized in situ to human chromosome preparations. These experiments allowed assignment of the hPL and growth hormone (hGH) genes, which have over 90% nucleotide homology in their coding sequences, to band q22-24 of chromosome 17. A gene copy number experiment showed that both genes are present in (TURN)3 copies per haploid genome.^ Experiments were designed to determine if all members of the hPL gene cluster, consisting of four non-allelic genes, are transcribed in term placenta. Advantage was taken of differences in restriction endonuclease sites in the coding portions of the different hPL genes, to distinguish the putative cDNAs of the transcriptionally active genes. Two genes were found to be represented in the cDNA library and their cDNA transcripts were isolated and characterized. Three independent methods showed that their corresponding mRNAs are about equally represented in the hPL mRNA population. The two cDNAs code for prehPL proteins which differ at a single amino acid position. However the secreted hPLs have identical amino acid sequences. A tetramer insertion duplication was found in a palindrome area of the 3' untranslated region of one of the hPL mRNAs. ^

The formation of the placenta is one of the first and most important developmental events that occur in early mammalian embryogenesis. Even given this importance of the placenta, the academic community has largely ignored studying gene regulation during the development and maturation of the placenta. For this reason, an in-depth study of gene regulation in the trophoblast layer of the placenta using murine Adenosine Deaminase (Ada) as a model system has been undertaken. It has been determined that Ada is highly expressed in the placenta and is critical for embryo development. Dr. Kellems' laboratory has previously described a 1.8 kb fragment of the Ada 5 ′ flanking region that is capable of directing trophoblast specific expression in a transgenic model system. Preliminary studies have demonstrated several critical portions of this fragment that are necessary for the correct tissue specific expression in the placenta. My first specific aim was to elucidate the trans factor binding to one of these sequences, the FP3. Through electromobility shift assays (EMSA), the 30 bp FP3 was narrowed to a 5 bp sequence which computer databases predicted bound to Acute Myeloid Leukemia 1 (AML-1). This was confirmed by supershift analysis. The functional importance of this binding was demonstrated by a transgenic approach. A significant difference in expression of the reporter in the placenta was seen when the 5 bp sequence was mutated. This finding is a novel use for the AML-1 transcription factor which is the DNA binding portion of the heterodimer Core Binding Protein (CBP). The 5′ 240 bp region has also been demonstrated to contain functionally significant sequence. Through EMSA assays and computer predictions, the area has been narrowed to two pertinent regions that are predicted to contain GATA binding motifs. ^

Placenta previa is alleged to be more common among women with a history of prior induced abortion. To investigate further whether there is a relationship between previous induced abortion and subsequent pregnancy complication of placenta previa, a matched case-comparison study was conducted comparing the reproductive histories of 256 women with placenta previa matched on age, date of delivery, and hospital with those of 256 women having normal deliveries and cesarean section deliveries without placental complications.^ Women with placenta previa had a twofold increase in the odds of having had one previous induced abortion (odds ratio 2.25) over women with no placental complications. Women with placenta previa and two or more previous induced abortions had a sevenfold increase in odds.^ The significant association of placenta previa and previous induced abortion remained after including gravida status, previous dilatation and curettage (D&C) status, previous spontaneous abortion, and race in a conditional logistic regression model. There is interaction between high gravidity and previous spontaneous abortion. Dilatation and curettage is associated with placenta previa primarily because women with abortion histories have also had a dilatation and curettage.^ Women who are seeking abortion and wish to have children later should be informed that there may be a longterm effect of developing placental complications in subsequent pregnancies. Women who have had at least one induced abortion or any dilatation and curettage procedure should be monitored carefully during any subsequent pregnancy for the risk of the complication of placenta previa. This knowledge should alert the physician or nurse-midwife to treat those women with a history of previous induced abortions as potential high risk pregnancies and could perhaps reduce maternal and fetal morbidity rates. ^

The work plan aims at deepening the analysis of the theoretic assumptions which support the practice in Vocational Guidance: analyzing the incidence of endogenous and exogenous factors both in the election and studying of a particular course of study and in the occupational resolution of the graduate. This analysis enables the revision and the new theoretic conceptualization which is afterwards transferred to the course, and to different groups and provincial institutions where the practice of Vocational Guidance occurs, as well as to other schools in the Northwest provinces of Argentina. Semiotic analysis, statistical elaboration and the research-action approach which, while surveying data renders a service to the milieu, provide the base for the project. Said project focuses on the following individuals: 1) freshmen, who offer us the following aspects to be considered: a) factors which either favor or hinder the insertion of the students attending the first years of the course; b) the conditions making up the learning situation in each subject, from the teaching point of view; c) the influence of institutional dimension in the insertion process; 2) graduands: the characteristics of the situation following graduation from University, those of the labor field and the different ways of gaining access to it are investigated. This analysis is carried out in the courses of study of Psychology and English (education of Professionals in English and English for Professionals).

In this paper we present a research that took place between 2010 and 2012 included in an investigation scholarship awarded by the State University of la Plata. It is about the problem with the transition between college and professional work. It is a part of the produced studies on the importance of social representations as factors that impact on the performance of specific activities. In this case it's about finding out the relations given among the representations about graduated professional role of the Psychology career and its job insertion and performance. The theoretical framework corresponds to Social Psychology and Guidance theories. Methodologically this is an exploratory and descriptive study, based on the 'triangulation' conception, of multiple type, that allows combining in the same investigation, different strategies, theoretical perspectives and sources; however qualitative techniques were prioritized to analyze data. Finally there are some considerations about the social representations concerning to the professional performance, mainly in the clinical field associated to education, and also to the problems of both situations over other fields
