We present high-precision transit observations of the exoplanet WASP-21b, obtained with the Rapid Imager to Search for Exoplanets instrument mounted on the 2.0-m Liverpool Telescope. A transit model is fitted, coupled with a Markov chain Monte Carlo routine, to derive accurate system parameters. The two new high-precision transits allow us to estimate the stellar density directly from the light curve. Our analysis suggests that WASP-21 is evolving off the main sequence which led to a previous overestimation of the stellar density. Using isochrone interpolation, we find a stellar mass of 0.86 ± 0.04 Msun, which is significantly lower than previously reported (1.01 ± 0.03 Msun). Consequently, we find a lower planetary mass of 0.27 ± 0.01 MJup. A lower inclination (87?4 ± 0?3) is also found for the system than previously reported, resulting in a slightly larger stellar (R*= 1.10 ± 0.03 Rsun) and planetary radius (Rp= 1.14 ± 0.04 RJup). The planet radius suggests a hydrogen/helium composition with no core which strengthens the correlation between planetary density and host star metallicity. A new ephemeris is determined for the system, i.e. T0= 245 5084.519 74 ± 0.000 20 (HJD) and P= 4.322 5060 ± 0.000 0031 d. We found no transit timing variations in WASP-21b.

WASP-13b is a sub-Jupiter mass exoplanet orbiting a G1V type star with a period of 4.35 d.The current uncertainty in its impact parameter (0 < b < 0.46) results in poorly definedstellar and planetary radii. To better constrain the impact parameter, we have obtained highprecisiontransit observations with the rapid imager to search for exoplanets (RISE) instrumentmounted on 2.0-m Liverpool Telescope. We present four new transits which are fitted witha Markov chain Monte Carlo routine to derive accurate system parameters. We found anorbital inclination of 85. ◦ 2 ± 0. ◦ 3 resulting in stellar and planetary radii of 1.56 ± 0.04 Rand 1.39 ± 0.05RJup, respectively. This suggests that the host star has evolved off the mainsequence and is in the hydrogen-shell-burning phase. We also discuss how the limb darkeningaffects the derived system parameters. With a density of 0.17ρJ,WASP-13b joins the group oflow-density planets whose radii are too large to be explained by standard irradiation models. We derive a new ephemeris for the system, T0 = 245 5575.5136 ± 0.0016 (HJD) and P =4.353 011 ± 0.000 013 d. The planet equilibrium temperature (Tequ = 1500 K) and the brighthost star (V = 10.4mag) make it a good candidate for follow-up atmospheric studies.

The enhanced stability of new mono-cis-dihydrodiol bacterial metabolites of tricyclic azaarenes has facilitated the dioxygenase-catalysed formation and isolation of the corresponding bis-cis-dihydrodiols (cis-tetraols) and a three step chemoenzymatic route to the derived arene oxide mammalian metabolites.

The biphenyl dioxygenase-catalyzed asymmetric mono-cis-dihydroxylation of the tetracyclic arenes chrysene 1A, benzo[c]phenanthridine 1B, and benzo[b]naphtho[2,1-d]thiophene 1C, has been observed to occur exclusively at the bay or pseudo-bay region using the bacterium Sphingomonas yanoikuyae B8/36. The mono-cis-dihydrodiol derivatives 2A and 2C, obtained from chrysene 1A by oxidation at the 3,4-bond (2A) and benzo[b]naphtho[2,1-d]thiophene 1C by oxidation at the 1,2-bond (2C), respectively, have been observed to undergo a further dioxygenase-catalyzed asymmetric cis-dihydroxylation at a second bay or pseudo-bay region bond to yield the corresponding bis-cis-dihydrodiols (cis-tetraols) 4A and 4C, the first members of a new class of microbial metabolites in the polycyclic arene series. The enantiopurities and absolute configurations of the new mono-cis-dihydrodiols 2B, 2C, and 3B were determined by H-1 NMR analyses of the corresponding (R)- and (S)-2-(1-methoxyethyl)benzeneboronate (MPBA) ester derivatives. The structure and absolute configurations of the bis-cis-dihydrodiols 4A and 4C were unambiguously determined by spectral analyses, stereochemical correlations, and, for the metabolite 4C, X-ray crystallographic analysis of the bis-acetonide derivative 7C. These results illustrate the marked preference of biphenyl dioxygenase for the cis-di- and tetra-hydroxylations of polycyclic arenes, at the more hindered bay or pseudo-bay regions, by exclusive addition from the same (si:si) face, to yield single enantiomers containing two and four chiral centers.

Experimental observations are presented demonstrating that the use of a gold-coated foam layer on the surface of a laser-driven target substantially reduces its hydrodynamic breakup during the acceleration phase. The data suggest that this results from enhanced thermal smoothing during the early-time imprint stage of the interaction. The target's kinetic energy and the level of parametric instability growth are shown to remain essentially unchanged from that of a conventionally driven target.

Introduction Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by chronic joint inflammation of unknown cause in children. JIA is an autoimmune disease and small numbers of auto-antibodies have been reported in JIA patients. The identification of antibody markers could improve the existing clinical management of patients. Methods A pilot study was performed on the application of a high-throughput platform, nucleic acid programmable protein arrays (NAPPA), to assess the levels of antibodies present in the systemic circulation and synovial joint of a small cohort of juvenile arthritis patients. Plasma and synovial fluid from ten JIA patients was screened for antibodies against 768 proteins on NAPPA. Results Quantitative reproducibility of NAPPA was demonstrated with >0.95 intra- and inter- array correlations. A strong correlation was also observed for the levels of antibodies between plasma and synovial fluid across the study cohort (r=0.96). Differences in the levels of 18 antibodies were revealed between sample types across all patients. Patients were segregated into two clinical subtypes with distinct antibody signatures by unsupervised hierarchical cluster analysis. Conclusions NAPPA provides a high-throughput quantitatively reproducible platform to screen for disease specific autoantibodies at the proteome level on a microscope slide. The strong correlation between the circulating antibody levels and those of the inflamed joint represents a novel finding and provides confidence to use plasma for discovery of autoantibodies in JIA, thus circumventing the challenges associated with joint aspiration. We expect that autoantibody profiling of JIA patients on NAPPA could yield antibody markers that can act as criteria to stratify patients, predict outcomes and understand disease etiology at the molecular level.

We present the ground-based detection of the secondary eclipse of the transiting exoplanet WASP-19b. The observations were made in the Sloan z' band using the ULTRACAM triple-beam CCD camera mounted on the New Technology Telescope. The measurement shows a 0.088% ± 0.019% eclipse depth, matching previous predictions based on H- and K-band measurements. We discuss in detail our approach to the removal of errors arising due to systematics in the data set, in addition to fitting a model transit to our data. This fit returns an eclipse center, T 0, of 2455578.7676 HJD, consistent with a circular orbit. Our measurement of the secondary eclipse depth is also compared to model atmospheres of WASP-19b and is found to be consistent with previous measurements at longer wavelengths for the model atmospheres we investigated.

Introduction: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) comprises a poorly understood group of chronic autoimmune diseases with variable clinical outcomes. We investigated whether the synovial fluid (SF) proteome could distinguish a subset of patients in whom disease extends to affect a large number of joints.

Methods: SF samples from 57 patients were obtained around time of initial diagnosis of JIA, labeled with Cy dyes and separated by two-dimensional electrophoresis. Multivariate analyses were used to isolate a panel of proteins which distinguish patient subgroups. Proteins were identified using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry with expression verified by immunochemical methods. Protein glycosylation status was confirmed by hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography.

Results: A truncated isoform of vitamin D binding protein (VDBP) is present at significantly reduced levels in the SF of oligoarticular patients at risk of disease extension, relative to other subgroups (p < 0.05). Furthermore, sialylated forms of immunopurified synovial VDBP were significantly reduced in extended oligoarticular patients (p < 0.005).

Conclusion: Reduced conversion of VDBP to a macrophage activation factor may be used to stratify patients to determine risk of disease extension in JIA patients.
