Venezuelan economic laboratory. The Case of the altruistic economy of Felipe Pérez Martí

Felipe Pérez Martí, who was the Venezuelan Minister of Planning and Development in the government of Hugo Chávez, proposes an economic model that he calls the altruistic economy or fourth way, which leads cooperative game theory to its logical extremes postulating a pure communism. Here we sustain that, first, it is impossible in the model of Pérez Martí to marginally allocate non-primary goods to those most in need or who most value them, facing a problem of defective economic calculation, and second, in order to achieve equality, he would have to replace his atomic local planners by a central planner, who would be unable to overcome the problem of imperfect and and incomplete information.

Gestextil. Sistema de planificación de recursos empresariales (ERP)

Este proyecto se basa en la implementación de un sistema ERP. Para ello, se desarrolla la base principal del sistema, la cual es genérica para todas las empresas. A partir de aquí se realiza el estudio personalizado e individual de los módulos necesarios para una PYME que ofrece servicio en el sector del téxtil y se implementan algunos de estos módulos acorde con las necesidades particulares. Para su desarrollo se aplica una arquitectura basada en tecnologías Java. Se tienen en cuenta factores como el coste económico de implantación, plataforma necesaria e incluso el rendimiento del propio sistema.

Repositori de preservació digital de la Biblioteca de Catalunya: informe descriptiu i de situació / Redactat per Karibel Pérez i Eugènia Serra del Grup de Preservació Digital de la BC

Com a responsable de la preservació del patrimoni bibliogràfic a Catalunya, la Biblioteca de Catalunya ha dedicat molts recursos a digitalitzar documents analògics, alhora que ha incorporat al seu fons documents creats directament en format digital. En l’actualitat representen un volum important, i per això el Grup de Preservació Digital de la BC ha descrit les necessitats i processos que són la base del disseny d’un repositori que garanteixi la perdurabilitat d’aquests documents. El present informe en descriu els detalls.

El presente trabajo se propone analizar el influjo de la cultura islámica y, muy especialmente, de su vertiente mística, en tres relatos de la ‘serie árabe’ de Jorge Luis Borges: El Zahir, La busca de Averroes y El acercamiento a Almotásim, analizados en torno a los conceptos básicos de metáfora, metafísica y misticismo, respectivamente. El objeto de este estudio es clarificar las fuentes empleadas en dichos textos para desentrañar las actitudes ideológicas de raigambre árabe que comprenden y la particular interpretación que el autor hace de éstas, dando así una idea más completa y global de la poética borgesiana

Efecto de las Estatinas sobre el Peptidoma Plasmático y Urinario de Pacientes Trasplantados Renales

Estudiem l’efecte de l’atorvastatina sobre perfil lipídic, funció renal, marcadors d’inflamació, peptidoma plasmàtic i urinari de 54 pacients trasplantats renals. L’estudi proteòmic es basa en tecnologia d’esferes magnètiques combinada amb espectrometria de masses MALDI-TOF. L’atorvastatina va millorar el perfil lipídic dels pacients i va provocar canvis significatius al peptidoma plasmàtic. Es va observar la disminució en plasma de pèptids derivats de fragments del quininogen i de C4. Atès que bradiquinina i C4a, que s’alliberen de quininogen i C4, son potents mediadors de la inflamació, els nostres resultats poden aclarir els efectes antiinflamatoris atribuïts a les estatines.

Diterpenoids from Azorella compacta (Umbelliferae) active on Trypanosoma cruzi

The anti-Trypanosoma cruzi activity of natural products isolated from Azorella compacta was evaluated, with particular emphasis on their effect against intracellular amastigotes. Five diterpenoids from A. compacta derived from mulinane and azorellane were isolated and identified. Only two products, named azorellanol (Y-2) and mulin-11,3-dien-20-oic acid (Y-5), showed trypanocidal activity against all stages of T. cruzi including intracellular amastigotes. At 10 µM, these compounds displayed a strong lytic activity. It ranged from 88.4 ± 0.6 to 99.0 ± 1 % for all strains and stages evaluate, with an IC50 /18 h values of 20-84 µM and 41-87 µM, respectively. The development of intracellular amastigotes was also inhibited by nearly 60% at 25 µM. The trypanocidal molecules Y-2 and Y-5 did show different degrees of cytotoxicity depending on the cell line tested, with an IC50 /24 h ranging from 33.2 to 161.2 µM. We evaluated the effect of diterpenoids against intracellular T. cruzi forms by immunofluorescent identification of a specific membrane molecular marker (Ssp-4 antigen) of the T. cruzi amastigote forms. The accuracy and reproducibility of the measurements were found to be outstanding when examined by confocal microscopy.

Evaluation of four methods for detecting the beta-lactamase activity in Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated in Cuba

Four methods (chromogenic, acidimetric, inhibition, and iodometric) for demonstration of the beta-lactamase production by 70 isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, were evaluated in Cuba. There was 100% correlation between all beta-lactamase methods and the standardized penicillin dilution susceptibility test for penicillinase-non-producing N. gonorrhoeae. For penicillinase-producing N. gonorrhoeae strains, there was a perfect correlation between the chromogenic method and penicillin susceptibility testing, but one and two strains failed to give a positive result for beta-lactamase with the inhibition/acidimetric and the iodometric methods, respectively. There was a high concordance between the chromogenic method, considered as gold standard and the rest of penicillinase tests evaluated: Kappa Index (KI) = 0.98 for inhibition/acidimetric methods and KI = 0.97 for the iodometric method. The four methods evaluated were accurate, reproducible, easily readable, economical, and ease to use for screening primary isolates of N. gonorrhoeae in Cuba. We recommended the use of the inhibition method, when testing the penicillinase activity in gonococcal isolates in provincial and municipal reference laboratories.

Re-infestation of houses by Triatoma dimidiata after intra-domicile insecticide application in the Yucatán peninsula, Mexico

In most countries, Chagas disease transmission control remains based on domestic insecticide application. We thus evaluated the efficacy of intra-domicile cyfluthrin spraying for the control of Triatoma dimidiata, the only Chagas disease vector in the Yucatán peninsula, Mexico, and monitored potential re-infestation every 15 days for up to 9 months. We found that there was a re-infestation of houses by adult bugs starting 4 months after insecticide application, possibly from sylvatic/peridomicile areas. This points out the need to take into account the potential dispersal of sylvatic/peridomestic adult bugs into the domiciles as well as continuity action for an effective vector control.

Description of Micropygomyia (Micropygomyia) ancashensis sp. nov. and the female of Lutzomyia (Helcocyrtomyia) chavinensis Pérez & Ogusuku (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) from Ancash department, Peru

A male of a new species Micropygomyia (Micropygomyia) ancashensis sp. nov. and a female of the Lutzomyia (Helcocyrtomyia) chavinensis Pérez & Ogusuku, 1999 captured in the Antonio Raymondi province, department of Ancash, Peru are described and illustrated. The new species belongs to the cayennensis series, being closest to Mi. lewisi (Feliciangeli Ordoñez & Férnandez) though presenting highly sclerotized pseudotracheae on the labella that seem to constitute an autapomorphy among American Phlebotominae, and a clypeus almost completely covered with setae, as in Warileya. The female of Lu. chavinensis is close to those of Lu. blancasi Galati & Cáceres 1990, Lu. noguchii (Shannon, 1929), and Lu. pallidithorax Galati & Cáceres 1994.

Anti-leishmanial and structure-activity relationship of ring substituted 3-phenyl-1-(1,4-di-N-oxide quinoxalin-2-yl)-2-propen-1-one derivatives

A series of ring substituted 3-phenyl-1-(1,4-di-N-oxide quinoxalin-2-yl)-2-propen-1-one derivatives were synthesized and tested for in vitro leishmanicidal activity against amastigotes of Leishmania amazonensis in axenical cultures and murine infected macrophages. Structure-activity relationships demonstrated the importance of a radical methoxy at position R3', R4' and R5'. (2E)-3-(3,4,5-trimethoxy-phenyl)-1-(3,6,7-trimethyl-1,4-dioxy-quinoxalin-2-yl)-propenone was the most active. Cytotoxicity on macrophages revealed that this product was almost six times more active than toxic.

Role of Leptin in the Activation of Immune Cells

Adipose tissue is an active endocrine organ that secretes various humoral factors (adipokines), and its shift to production of proinflammatory cytokines in obesity likely contributes to the low-level systemic inflammation that may be present in metabolic syndrome-associated chronic pathologies such as atherosclerosis. Leptin is one of the most important hormones secreted by adipocytes, with a variety of physiological roles related to the control of metabolism and energy homeostasis. One of these functions is the connection between nutritional status and immune competence. The adipocyte-derived hormone leptin has been shown to regulate the immune response, innate and adaptive response, both in normal and pathological conditions. The role of leptin in regulating immune response has been assessed in vitro as well as in clinical studies. It has been shown that conditions of reduced leptin production are associated with increased infection susceptibility. Conversely, immune-mediated disorders such as autoimmune diseases are associated with increased secretion of leptin and production of proinflammatory pathogenic cytokines. Comportamiento del orificio de implantación del catéter en pacientes en diálisis peritoneal en relación a los cuidados

Infections of the catheter wound in peritoneal dialysis are the most frequent cause of morbility in patients who undergo this technique. There are a number of procedures for the care of the wound and it is not easy to define a single method that will guarantee good condition of the wound. In order to evaluate the behaviour of the wound related to the procedure used in their care, we studied 306 patients over 24 months, compiling socio-demographic and clinical variables. We found a high incidence of infections caused by gram-positive skin and mucous germs, with a strong correlation with the fact that the patient/family carer is a nasal carrier of staphylococcus aureus and that they appear more frequently in patients who do not remove the wound dressing in the shower. We also detected an increase in pseudomonas infections when the patient does not dry the wound with a hair-dryer
