The United States and Japanese counterpart panels on aquaculture were formed in 1969 under the United States-Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources (UJNR). The panels currently include specialists drawn from the federal departments most concerned with aquaculture. Charged with exploring and developing bilateral cooperation, the panels have focused their efforts on exchanging information related to aquaculture which could be of benefit to both countries. The UJNR was begun during the Third Cabinet-Level Meeting of the Joint United States-Japan Committee on Trade and Economic Affairs in January 1964, In addition to aquaculture, current subjects in the program include desalination of seawater, toxic microorganisms, air pollution, energy, forage crops, national park management, mycoplasmosis, wind and seismic effects, protein resources, forestry, and several joint panels and committees in marine resources research, development, and utilization. Shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum), an endangered species, has experienced a several-fold increase in abundance in the Hudson River in recent decades. This population growth followed a substantial improvement in water quality during the 1970s to a large portion (c. 40%) of the species' summertime nursery area. Age structure and growth were investigated to evaluate the hypothesis that improvements in water quality stimulated population recovery through increased survival of young of the year juveniles. Specimens were captured using gill nets bi-monthly from November 2003 to November 2004 (n = 596). Annuli in fin spine sections were used to generate estimates of sturgeon age. Based upon a marginal increment analysis, annuli were determined to form at an annual rate. Age determinations yielded a catch composed of age 5-30 years for sizes 49-105cm Total Length (n = 554). Individual growth rate (von Bertalanffy coefficients: TL, = 1045mm, K = 0.07) for the population was similar to previous growth estimates within the Hudson River as well as proximal estuaries. Hindcast year-class strengths, based upon a recent stock assessment (Bain et al. 2000) and corrected for gill net mesh selectivity and cumulative mortality indicated high recruitments (28,000-43,000 yearlings)during 1986-1992, which were preceded and succeeded by c.5-year periods of lower recruitment (5,000-1 5,000 yearlings). Recruitment patterns were corroborated by trends in shortnose sturgeon bycatch from a Hudson utilities-sponsored monitoring program. Results indicated that Hudson River shortnose sturgeon abundance increased due to the formation of several strong year-classes occurring about five years subsequent to improved water quality in important nursery and forage habitats in the upper Hudson River estuary. Esta dissertação de mestrado tem por objetivo entender as transformações espaciais ocorridas no município de Petrópolis/RJ, a partir do surgimento de novas centralidades que começam a despontar principalmente a partir da década de 1980. A proposta do presente trabalho também se baseia no estudo da formação de uma economia de serviços no município, como um estágio avançado das economias capitalistas, a partir do forte declínio de sua anterior base industrial e muito incipiente base agrícola, apesar de se tratar de uma cidade média. Desta maneira, Petrópolis começa a estimular determinados ramos do setor terciário que são extremamente importantes e que ainda apresentam a possibilidade de movimentar outros ramos e setores, como por exemplo, turismo e lazer, moda (roupas e confecções), gastronomia, decoração/design e alta tecnologia. No entanto, o estímulo ao desenvolvimento de uma economia de serviços passa necessariamente por ações implementadas pelo poder público, visando remover obstáculos à atração de novos atores que investirão em cidades que atendam às suas necessidades. Por isso, além de políticas públicas, o município investe em infraestrutura urbana para alinhar-se ao empresariamento ou empreendedorismo de cidades, esperando, assim, adentrar ao circuito das city marketing. Mas este modelo de desenvolvimento terciário criou diferenças intra-urbanas no município de Petrópolis quando estimulou o surgimento de novas centralidades que, para nós, se materializa principalmente na imagem do terceiro distrito Itaipava. Esta centralidade apresenta especificidades que a torna lócus importante para uma abastada classe social que pretende não depender de deslocamentos mais longos até o distrito-Sede/Centro Histórico para consumir bens e serviços. Logo, a nova centralidade Itaipava surgirá como um espaço especializado em turismo e lazer, gastronomia, decoração/design e shopping centers, atendendo às exigências mais específicas de uma classe abastada. Porém, mesmo existindo uma nova centralidade, em nenhum momento haverá neste trabalho a construção da ideia de um centro tradicional e histórico esfacelado e agonizante. Muito pelo contrário, o que se percebeu em Petrópolis foi o inverso: o distrito-Sede/Centro Histórico continua sendo o mais dinâmico dentro do território municipal e, ao contrário daquilo observado em grandes cidades, não há uma perda de sua importância, mas sim hierarquias diferentes que se complementam. Prova disso é a sequência de dados que será apresentada no último capítulo. Enfim, um município de porte médio se qualifica enquanto uma economia de serviços, espraiando-se para as áreas afastadas do centro onde, mesmo assim, o centro tradicional não perde sua hegemonia, apesar do surgimento de novas centralidades.

Pike, Esox lucius, are present in Loch Callater at their highest altitude and most extreme habitat in the British Isles, with subarctic winter conditions and extended winter ice-cover. The response of pike in this environment is slower growth, due to a shorter growing season and the low availability of forage fish, giving the poorest reported length-at-age for pike in the British Isles. All pike were mature or had spawned in the same year, with gravid ovaries in April and normal recovering ovaries in June-July. As in other lochs with few prey fishes, the larger pike ate small items such as invertebrates.

[ES]Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado tiene como objeto crear un programa que sirva como herramienta para los cálculos en las propiedades a fatiga de una pieza. El conjunto del trabajo se centra en su creación mediante la herramienta Excel. El programa cuenta con tres diferentes pestañas: una para los datos que debe introducir el usuario, otra correspondiente a los cálculos y por último una en la que aparecen los resultados. El usuario debe conocer las propiedades de la probeta del material a ensayar, así como el rango de ciclos en el cual se va a trabajar (siempre en un rango de ciclos medio alto). A partir de estas informaciones de la probeta, y gracias a la curva de Basquin y la ecuación de Marin, el programa será capaz de obtener la curva de resistencia a fatiga correspondiente para la pieza. Se incluyen también casos especiales en los que se realicen tratamientos mecánicos de mejora, con una tensión límite del proceso. Para obtener la curva S-N de la pieza se pedirá información en la pestaña de interfaz con el usuario sobre distintas propiedades de la pieza, que permitan así calcular los valores de los coeficientes de Marín gracias a la base de datos que contiene el programa. El usuario tiene también la opción de introducir él mismo los valores de los coeficientes para así obtener una curva que se aproxime más a sus resultados experimentales. En resumen, la función del programa es la de ser una calculadora de la resistencia fatiga de la pieza a partir de los datos que se disponen de la probeta.
