The role of homogeneity in ex situ grown conductive coatings and dimensionality in the lithium storage properties of TiO(2) is discussed here. TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet comprising of mixed crystallographic phases of anatase and TiO(2) (B) have been synthesized by an optimized hydrothermal method. Surface modifications of TiO(2) nanotube are realized via coating the nanotube with Ag nanoparticles and amorphous carbon. The first discharge cycle capacity (at current rate = 10 mA g(-1)) for TiO(2) nanotube and nanosheet were 355 mAh g(-1) and 225 mAhg(-1), respectively. The conductive surface coating stabilized the titania crystallographic structure during lithium insertion-deinsertion processes via reduction in the accessibility of lithium ions to the trapping sites. The irreversible capacity is beneficially minimized from 110 mAh g(-1) for TiO(2) nanotubes to 96 mAh g(-1) and 57 mAhg(-1) respectively for Ag and carbon modified TiO(2) nanotubes. The homogeneously coated amorphous carbon over TiO(2) renders better lithium battery performance than randomly distributed Ag nanoparticles coated TiO(2) due to efficient hopping of electrons. The term Structural Health Monitoring has gained wide acceptance in the recent pastas a means to monitor a structure and provide an early warning of an unsafe conditionusing real-time data. Utilization of structurally integrated, distributed sensors tomonitor the health of a structure through accurate interpretation of sensor signals andreal-time data processing can greatly reduce the inspection burden. The rapidimprovement of the Fiber Bragg Grating sensor technology for strain, vibration andacoustic emission measurements in recent times make them a feasible alternatives tothe traditional strain gauges transducers and conventional Piezoelectric sensors usedfor Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM).Optical fiber-based sensors offers advantages over conventional strain gauges, PVDFfilm and PZT devices in terms of size, ease of embedment, immunity fromelectromagnetic interference(EMI) and potential for multiplexing a number ofsensors. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility of Fiber BraggGrating sensor and compare its utility with the conventional strain gauges and PVDFfilm sensors. For this purpose experiments are being carried out in the laboratory on acomposite wing of a mini air vehicle (MAV). In this paper, the results obtained fromthese preliminary experiments are discussed.

A comparative study of strain response and mechanical properties of rammed earth prisms, has been made using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors (optical) and clip-on extensometer (electro-mechanical). The aim of this study is to address the merits and demerits of traditional extensometer vis-à-vis FBG sensor; a uni-axial compression test has been performed on a rammed earth prism to validate its structural properties from the stress - strain curves obtained by two different methods of measurement. An array of FBG sensors on a single fiber with varying Bragg wavelengths (..B), has been used to spatially resolve the strains along the height of the specimen. It is interesting to note from the obtained stress-strain curves that the initial tangent modulus obtained using the FBG sensor is lower compared to that obtained using clip-on extensometer. The results also indicate that the strains measured by both FBG and extensometer sensor follow the same trend and both the sensors register the maximum strain value at the same time.

A thermally stable and flexible composite has been synthesized by following a consecutive `two-step', solvent free route. Silicone polymer containing internal hydrides was used as a polymer matrix and mesoporous silica functionalized with allytrimethoxysiloxane was used as a filler material. In the second step, the composite preparation was carried out using the hydrosilylation reaction mediated by `Karastedt' platinum catalyst. The results of the studies suggest that the composites are thermally stable, hydrophobic and flexible and can be potentially used for encapsulating flexible electronic devices.

Through this paper we experimentally demonstrate the fabrication of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) chemical sensor to detect and determine the manganese concentration in water and compare our results with sophisticated spectroscopic methods, such as atomic absorption spectrometry and the inductively coupled plasma method. Here we propose a simple method to develop a thin layer of gold nanoparticles above the etched grating region to enhance the sensitivity of the reflected spectrum of the FBG. By doing so, we achieve a sensitivity of 1.26 nm/parts per million in determining the trace level of Mn in water. Proper reagents are used to detect manganese in water. Nanocomposites of few-layer graphene with nanoparticles of CdSe and CdS have been synthesized by two different methods, one involving ultrasonication of a mixture of graphene and the chalcogenide nanoparticles, and another involving assembly at the organic-aqueous interface. The nanocomposites have been examined by electron microscopy, electronic absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies as well as Raman spectroscopy. Electron microscopy reveals that the nanoparticles are dispersed on the graphene surface. Raman spectra show the presence of definitive electronic interaction between the nanoparticles and graphene depending on the capping agent. Photoluminescence spectra are markedly influenced by the interaction of the nanoparticles with the graphene surface, depending on the capping agent.

This paper describes the measurement of aerodynamic loads using fiber-optic strain gauge sensors and associated signal processors at hypersonic speeds in the 300mm hypersonic wind tunnel. at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science. Fiber-optic sensors have been developed in USA since 1990, for variety of applications in experimental stress analysis, skin friction measurement in fluid flows, smart structures, smart materials, sensing of acoustic emission and more recently in the development of compact devices for measurement of displacement, stress/strain, pressure, temperature, acceleration etc. Our group at llSc has been playing a lead role in the use of these fiber - optic sensors for successful measurement of aerodynamic loads in wind tunnels and the first ever six-component wind tunnel strain gauge balance in the world based on fiber optic sensors was built at the Indian Institute of Science in the year 1999. We report here the results of our efforts in the development of an internal strain gauge balance for high-speed wind tunnel applications.

This paper describes the dielectric behavior of an insulator‐conductor composite, namely, the wax‐graphite composite. The variation of specific capacitance of these composites with parameters such as volume fraction and grain size of the conducting particles and temperature has been studied. These observed variations have been explained using the same model [C. Rajagopal and M. Satyam, J. Appl. Phys. 49, 5536 (1978)] which explains electrical conduction in composites. The specific capacitance of these materials appears to be governed by the contact capacitance between the conducting particles and the number of contacts each particle has with its neighbors. The variation of specific capacitance with temperature is attributed to the change in contact area.

One of the important issues in the development of hydroxyapatite (HA)-based biomaterials is the prosthetic infection, which limits wider use of monolithic HA despite superior cellular response. Recently, we reported that ZnO addition to HA can induce bactericidal property. It is therefore important to assess how ZnO addition influences the cytotoxicity property and cell adhesion/proliferation on HA-ZnO composite surfaces in vitro. In the above perspective, the objective of this study is to investigate the cell type and material composition dependent cellular proliferation and viability of pressureless sintered HA-ZnO composites. The combination of cell viability data as well as morphological observations of cultured human osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells and mouse fibroblast L929 cells suggests that HA-ZnO composites containing 10 Wt % or lower ZnO exhibit the ability to support cell adhesion and proliferation. Both SaOS2 and L929 cells exhibit extensive multidirectional network of actin cytoskeleton and cell flattening on the lower ZnO containing (=10 Wt %) HA-ZnO composites. The in vitro results illustrate how variation in ZnO content can influence significantly the cell vitality, as evaluated using MTT biochemical assay. Also, the critical statistical analysis reveals that ZnO addition needs to be carefully tailored to ensure good in vitro cytocompatibility. The underlying reasons for difference in biological properties are analyzed. It is suggested that surface wettability as well as dissolution of ZnO, both contribute to the observed differences in cellular viability and proliferation. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we report the mechanical and biocompatibility properties of injection-molded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites reinforced with 40 wt % ceramic filler [hydroxyapatite (HA) and/or Al2O3] and 2 wt % titanate as a coupling agent. The mechanical property measurements revealed that a combination of a maximum tensile strength of 18.7 MPa and a maximum tensile modulus of about 855 MPa could be achieved with the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. For the same composite composition, the maximum compression strength was determined to be 71.6 MPa and the compression modulus was about 660 MPa. The fractrography study revealed the uniform distribution of ceramic fillers in the semicrystalline HDPE matrix. The cytocompatibility study with osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells confirmed extensive cell adhesion and proliferation on the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites. The cell viability analysis with the 3(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay revealed a statistically significant difference between the injection-molded HDPE20 wt % HA20 wt % Al2O3 composites and sintered HA for various culture durations of upto 7 days. The difference in cytocompatibility properties among the biocomposites is explained in terms of the difference in the protein absorption behavior. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Zinc-aluminium cast alloys (ZA alloys) exhibit good castability and mechanical properties but these alloys lack creep resistance and high temperature stability. One solution to improve these properties is to reinforce with ceramic particles or fibres, to result in MMCs. MMCs can be produced using casting technique involving infiltration. A systematic investigation was taken and this paper discusses the salient findings of the study on the ZA-27 alloy based MMCs produced through squeeze casting. (Reinforcing fibers: SAFFIL (chopped alumina) or mullite.)
