In the structure of catena-poly[{triaqua(L-pro-line-O)erbium(III)}-bis-mu-(L-proline-O:O')-{triaqua-(L-proline-O)erbium(III)}-bis-mu-(L-proline-O:O') hexaperchlorate], each Er3+ ion is coordinated by five carboxyl O atoms from the L-proline molecules and three water molecules. Four of the SiX L-proline molecules act as bidentate bridging ligands to link the Er3+ ions through the carboxyl groups, thus producing a one-dimensional chain structure. The other two ligands coordinate unidentately to the rare-earth ions. Hydrogen bonds formed between the coordinated water molecules and between the water and unidentate proline ligand stabilize the polymeric chain.

A study has been made of the crystallization behavior of polypropylene (PP) filled with rare earth oxides under isothermal conditions. These rare earth oxides include lanthanum oxide (La2O3), yttrium oxide (Y2O3), and a mixture of rare earth oxides containing 70% Y2O3 (Y2O3-0.70). A differential scanning calorimeter was used to monitor the energetics of the crystallization process from the melt. During isothermal crystallization, dependence of the relative degree of crystallinity on time was described by the Avrami equation. It has been shown that the addition of any of the three rare earth oxides causes a considerable increase in the overall crystallization rate of PP but does not influence the mechanism of nucleation and growth of the PP crystals. The analysis of kinetic data according to nucleation theories shows that the increase in crystallization rate of PP in the composites is due to the decrease in surface energy of the extremity surfaces. The relative contents of the beta-form in the composites are somewhat higher than that in the plain PP. However, the contents of the beta-form in the plain PP and the composites are all very low relative to those of the alpha-form and the influence of the formation of the beta-form on the crystallization kinetics can be neglected.

C-13 and H-1 NMR technique was used to study the interaction of Gly-Gly with heavy lanthanide cations Dy3+, Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+ in aqueous solution. The stability constants for the 1:1 and 1:2 complexes of Gly-Gly with Ho3+ and Yb3+ were determined from the titration curves of chemical shift versus concentration ratio of lanthanide to Gly-Gly. The solution structure of the Ln-Gly-Gly complex was analyzed based upon the C-13 and H-1 lanthanide induced shifts and the results show that in the complex Gly Gly is coordinated to the lanthanide ion through the carboxyl oxygens with the backbone of the ligand in an extended state.

The tetranuclear nearly-linear complex (eta-8-C8H8)Er(mu-eta-8-C8H8)K(mu-eta-8-C8H8)Er(mu-eta-8-C8H8)K(THF)4 (THF = tetrahydrofuran) is first synthesised by the reaction of benzylcyclopentadienyl erbium dichloride (PhCH2C5H4)ErCl2.3THF with cyclooctatetraenyl potassium K2C8H8 in 1:1 molar ratio in THF; a single crystal X-ray study has shown that the complex has the tetralayer-sandwich structure and that the adjacent Er3+ and K+ ions are bridged by eta-8-cyclooctatetraenyl group.

La0.8Sr0.2Mn1.1O3 (LSM1.1)-10 mol% Sc2O3-Stabilized ZrO2 co-doped with CeO2 (ScSZ) composite cathodes were investigated for anode-supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with thin 8 mol% Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) electrolyte. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that the ScSZ electrolytes displayed good chemical compatibility with the nonstoichiometric LSM1.1 against co-firing at 1300 degrees C. Increasing the CeO2 content in the ScSZ electrolytes dramatically suppressed the electrode polarization resistance, which may be related to the improved surface oxygen exchange or the enlarged active area of cathode. The 5Ce10ScZr was the best electrolyte for the composite cathodes, which caused a small ohmic resistance decrease and the reduced polarization resistance and brought about the highest cell performance. The cell performances at lower temperatures seemed to rely on the electrode polarization resistance more seriously, than the ohmic resistance. Compared with the cell impedance at higher temperatures, the higher the 5Ce10ScZr proportion in the composite cathodes, the smaller the increment of the charge transfer resistance at lower temperatures. The anode-supported SOFC with the LSM1.1-5Ce10ScZr (60:40) composite cathode achieved the maximum power densities of 0.82 W/cm(2) at 650 degrees C and 2.24 W/cm(2) at 800 degrees C, respectively. The microscopic mechanism leading to stabilization of cubic and tetragonal forms of zirconia (ZrO2) is analyzed by means of a self-consistent tight-binding model. Using this model, energies and structures of zirconia containing different vacancy concentrations are calculated, equivalent in concentration to the charge compensating vacancies associated with dissolved yttria (Y2O3) in the tetragonal and cubic phase fields (3.2 and 14.4% mol, respectively). The model is shown to predict the large relaxations around an oxygen vacancy, and the clustering of vacancies along the 111 directions, in good agreement with experiments and first principles calculations. The vacancies alone are shown to explain the stabilization of cubic zirconia, and the mechanism is analyzed. (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The electron energy-loss near-edge structure (ELNES) at the O K edge has been studied in yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). The electronic structure of YSZ for compositions between 3 and 15 mol % Y2O3 has been computed using a pseudopotential-based technique to calculate the local relaxations near the O vacancies. The results showed phase transition from the tetragonal to cubic YSZ at 10 mol % of Y2O3, reproducing experimental observations. Using the relaxed defect geometry, calculation of the ELNES was carried out using the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method. The results show very good agreement with the experimental O K-edge signal, demonstrating the power of using ELNES to probe the stabilization mechanism in doped metal oxides.

The electron energy-loss near-edge structure (ELNES) at the oxygen K-edge has been investigated in a range of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) materials. The electronic structure of the three polymorphs of pure ZrO2 and of the doped YSZ structure close to the 33 mol %Y2O3 composition have been calculated using a full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method (NFP-LMTO) as well as a pseudopotential based technique. Calculations of the ELNES dipole transition matrix elements in the framework of the NFP-LMTO scheme and inclusion of core hole screening within Slater's transition state theory enable the ELNES to be computed. Good agreement between the experimental and calculated ELNES is obtained for pure monoclinic ZrO2. The agreement is less good with the ideal tetragonal and cubic structures. This is because the inclusion of defects is essential in the calculation of the YSZ ELNES. If the model used contains ordered defects such as vacancies and metal Y planes, agreement between the calculated and experimental O K-edges is significantly improved. The calculations show how the five different O environments of Zr,Y,O, are connected with the features observed in the experimental spectra and demonstrate clearly the power of using ELNES to probe the stabilization mechanism in doped metal oxides.

A series of Cu-zirconia catalysts containing various additives (Y2O3, La2O3, Al2O3 and CeO2) have been prepared by coprecipitation and their activities and stabilities under operating conditions have been obtained for the steam reforming of methanol. It has been found that an yttria-promoted catalyst containing 30 mol% Cu and 20 mol% of Y2O3 is not only very active but is also very stable under reaction conditions. The yttria appears to stabilise a high copper surface area and may also have a slight promotional effect on the copper. The results obtained with this material compare very favourably with data for the best catalysts reported in the literature. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The halide derivatives of yttrium ortho-oxomolybdate YX[MoO4] (X = F, Cl) both crystallize in the monoclinic system with four formula units per unit cell. YF[MoO4] exhibits a primitive cell setting (space group P2(1)/c, a = 519.62(2) pm, b = 1225.14(7) pm, c = 663.30(3) pm, beta = 112.851(4)degrees), whereas the lattice of YCl[MoO4] shows face-centering (space group C2/m; a = 1019.02(5) pm, b = 720.67(4) pm, c = 681.50(3) pm, beta = 107.130(4)degrees). The two compounds each contain crystallographically unique Y3+ cations, which are found to have a coordination environment of six oxide and two halide anions. In the case of YF[MoO4], the coordination environment is seen as square antiprisms, and for YCl[MoO4], trigon-dodecahedra. are found. The discrete tetrahedral [MoO4](2-) units of the fluoride derivative are exclusively bound by six terminal Y3+ cations, while those of the chloride compound show a 5-fold coordination around the tetrahedra with one edge-bridging and four terminal Y3+ cations. The halide anions in each compound exhibit a coordination number of two, building up isolated planar rhombus-shaped units according to [Y2F2](4+) in YF[MoO4] and [Y2Cl2](4+) in YCl[MoO4], respectively. Both compounds were synthesized at high temperatures using Y2O3, MoO3, and the corresponding yttrium trihalide in a molar ratio of 1:3:1. Single crystals of both are insensitive to moist air and are found to be coarse shaped and colorless with optical band gaps situated in the near UV around 3.78 eV for the fluoride and 3.82 eV for the chloride derivative. Furthermore, YF[MoO4] seems to be a suitable material for doping to obtain luminescent materials because the Eu3+-doped compound shows an intense red luminescence, which has been spectroscopically investigated.

In order to combine the mechanical properties of yttria-stabilised zirconia (ZrO2-3 mol% Y2O3; code Y-ZrO2) with the bioactivity of titania (TiO2), Y-ZrO2-TiO2, green compacts with 0-40vol.% TiO2 were sintered at 1300, 1400, and 1500degreesC for 4h, respectively. The microstructural features such as grains, pores, and phases were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). The mechanical properties such as hardness and toughness were also determined using the methods of Vickers indentation and Knoop indentation. All the composites showed the major tetragonal Y-ZrO2 phase regardless of the content of the added TiO2. However, rutile TiO2 phase was obtained at 1300degreesC, whereas zirconium titanate (ZrTi04) phase was found at 1400 and 1500degreesC. The Y-ZrO2-ZrTiO4 Composites sintered at 1500degreesC showed relatively high hardness (860-1000 kg/mm(2)) and toughness (4.0-4.5 MPa m(0.5)), whereas the Y-ZrO2-TiO2 composites sintered at 1300degreesC had slightly lower hardness (720-950kg/mm(2)) and fracture toughness (3.1-3.3 MPa m(0.5)).

Acid/base strength distribution of Y2O3 and its mixed oxides with alumina catalysts are measured on Hammett acidity function scale and expressed in terms of H0max value. Basicity of Y2O3 increases with increase in activation temperature and for mixed oxides the basicity increases with increase in concentration of Y2O3, in the catalyst.
