The imaging properties of a phase conjugating lens operating in the far field zone of the imaged source and augmented with scatterers positioned in the source near field region are theoretically studied in this paper. The phase conjugating lens consists of a double sided 2D assembly of straight wire elements, individually interconnected through phase conjugation operators. The scattering elements are straight wire segments which are loaded with lumped impedance loads at their centers. We analytically and numerically analyze all stages of the imaging process; i) evanescent-to-propagating spectrum conversion; ii) focusing properties of infinite or finite sized phase conjugating lens; iii) source reconstruction upon propagating-to-evanescent spectrum conversion. We show that the resolution that can be achieved depends critically on the separation distance between the imaged source and scattering arrangement, as well as on the topology of the scatterers used. Imaged focal widths of up to one-seventh wavelength are demonstrated. The results obtained indicate the possibility of such an arrangement as a potential practical means for realising using conventional materials devices for fine feature extraction by electromagnetic lensing at distances remotely located from the source objects under investigation

1 Activation of human platelets by thrombin is mediated by the proteolytic cleavage of two G-protein coupled protease-activated receptors, PAR-1 and PAR-4. However, thrombin also binds specifically to the platelet surface glycoprotein GPIb. It has been claimed that thrombin can induce aggregation of platelets via a novel GPIb-mediated pathway, which is independent of PAR activation and fibrinogen binding to alpha(IIb)beta(3) integrin, but dependent upon polymerizing fibrin and the generation of intracellular signals.

Anisotropic impedance surfaces are employed as low-profile and broadband reflectors that convert orthogonal linear to right- and left-handed circular polarization respectively. By virtue of anisotropy, it is possible to independently control the reflection characteristics of two orthogonal linearly polarized incident plane waves and therefore achieve linear to circular polarization conversion. Equivalent circuits for anisotropic impedance surfaces with arbitrarily shaped elements are employed to demonstrate the operating principle and a design procedure is proposed. The proposed design procedure is demonstrated by means of an example involving a dipole array. A prototype is designed and its performance characteristics are evaluated. The 3-dB relative axial ratio bandwidth exceeds 60%, while low loss and angular stability are also reported. Numerical and experimental results on a fabricated prototype are presented to validate the synthesis and the performance. © 2006 IEEE.

Mesoporous silica grown using [3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]octadecyldimethylammonium chloride as the mesoporogen in the presence of Fe and Al is X-ray amorphous, but contains very small domains with features of MFI zeolite as evidenced by IR and Raman spectroscopy. When applied as a catalyst, this amorphous sample shows good performance in the selective oxidation of benzene using nitrous oxide. Addition of tetrapropylammonium as structure directing agent to the as-synthesized mesoporous silica and subsequent dry gel conversion results in the formation of hierarchical Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite. During dry gel conversion the wormhole mesostructure of the initial material is completely lost. A dominant feature of the texture after crystallization is the high interconnectivity of micropores and mesopores. Substantial redistribution of low-dispersed Fe takes place during dry gel conversion towards highly dispersed isolated Fe species outside the zeolite framework. The catalytic performance in the oxidation of benzene to phenol of these highly mesoporous zeolites is appreciably higher than that of the parent material.

The commercial production of vanillin from sodium lignosulfonate under highly alkaline conditions, catalyzed by Cu2+ at elevated temperature and pressures up to 10 bar, has been simulated in a 3-L stirred reactor. Initially, the process was operated in the presence of nitrogen in dead-end mode, and it was shown that vanillin and vanillic acid were formed by hydrolysis at temperatures of 120, 140, and 160 °C. At the two higher temperatures, the amount of vanillin produced was the same. Subsequently, experiments were conducted at the same elevated pressures and temperatures with addition of air or oxygen-enriched air once the temperature in the reactor had reached temperatures similar to those used when only hydrolysis occurred. In this case, the concentration of vanillin at 140 and 160 °C was equal to that due to hydrolysis, and the subsequent 2-fold increase was due to oxidation. In addition, both vanillic acid and acetovanillone (which has rarely been reported) were produced, as was hydrogen. Thus, for the first time, it has been shown that the production of vanillin (and other compounds) from sodium lignosulfonate at elevated temperatures involves hydrolysis and oxidation, with hydrolysis starting at just above 100 °C, that is, much lower than has previously been reported. Approximately 50% is produced by each mechanism. In addition, the orders of the reactions of the different steps were estimated, and the reaction mechanisms are discussed.

A low temperature, isothermal, gas-phase, recyclable process is described for the partial oxidation of methane to methanol over Cu–ZSM-5. Activation in NO at 150 °C followed by methane reaction and steam extraction (both at 150 °C) allowed direct observation of methanol at the reactor outlet.

Conversion of xylose to l-lactate was carried out by Lactococcus lactis IO-1 using an electrodialysis bioprocess (ED-BP). At 50 g l -1 xylose, the ED-BP was already complete in half the time (32 h) taken by the control culture without electrodialysis (>60 h). At 80 g l -1 xylose, the control culture was unable to consume >50 g l -1 xylose, whereas the ED-BP consumed 75 g l -1 xylose in 45 h. Thus, the simultaneous removal of lactate and acetate by ED-BP was associated with high-speed l-lactate production, increased xylose consumption and an increased l-lactate production. Combining whole cell biocatalysis and chemocatalysis in a single reaction sequence avoids unnecessary separations, and the associated waste and energy consumption. Bacterial fermentation has been employed to convert waste glycerol from biodiesel production into 1,3-propanediol. This 1,3-propanediol can be extracted selectively from the aqueous fermentation broth using ionic liquids. 1,3-propanediol in ionic liquid solution was converted to propanal by hydrogen transfer initiated dehydration (HTID) catalysed by a Cp*IrCl2(NHC) (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; NHC = carbene ligand) complex. The use of an ionic liquid solvent enabled the reaction to be performed under reduced pressure, facilitating the isolation of the product, and improving the reaction selectivity. The Ir(III) catalyst in ionic liquid was found to be highly recyclable.
