The monograph has been written on the base of data obtained from samples and materials collected during the 19-th cruise of RV ''Akademik Vernadsky'' to the Northern and Equatorial Indian Ocean. Geological features of the region (stratigraphy, tectonic structure, lithology, distribution of ore-forming components in bottom sediments, petrography of igneous rocks, etc.) are under consideration. Regularities of trace element concentration in Fe-Mn nodules, nodule distribution in bottom sediments, and engineering-geological properties of sediments within the nodule fields have been studied. Much attention is paid to ocean crust rocks. The wide range of ore mineralization (magnetite, chromite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, pentlandite, and other minerals) has been ascertained.

The biostratigraphic distribution and abundance of middle Miocene to Pleistocene silicoflagellates is documented from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 138 Holes 844B, 847B, 848B, 849B, 850B, 85 IB, 852B, and 854B from the eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean. The silicoflagellates were generally abundant and well preserved and frequently exhibited an unusually large range of variation. The upper Miocene of near-equatorial sites includes an assemblage of Bachmannocena diodon nodosa, which includes a bridge across the width of the basal ring. Stratigraphically below this, at sites within 5° of the equator is a lengthy interval of specimens of Distephanus speculum tenuis, which have a fragile apical structure. Both the intervals of Bachmannocena diodon nodosa plexus and Distephanus speculum tenuis are biostratigraphically useful within 5° of the equator, but are less useful beyond that. An unusual range of variation also is observed for Dictyocha in the Pliocene sediments at about the point where D. perlaevis and D. messanensis appear in the geologic record. This variation may be explained by hybridization between diverging species.

Radiocarbon measurements on core tops from the Ontong-Java plateau confirm a previous finding by Berger and Killingley [1982] that at any given water depth, cores taken on the equator have higher accumulation rates and younger core top ages than their off-equator counterparts. Further, these new results fortify the conclusion by Broecker et al. [1991] that the increase in core top radiocarbon age with water depth rules out homogeneous dissolution within the pore waters as the dominant mechanism. Either most of the dissolution must occur prior to burial or it must occur during the first pass through the respiration-CO2-rich upper pore waters after which the calcite grains become armored against further dissolution. A puzzling aspect of this new data set is that despite the sizable difference in accumulation rate, the extent of dissolution as measured by either the CaCO3 content or the ratio of CaCO3 in the >150-µm size fraction to that in the < 63-µm fraction is no different off than on the equator. In order to reconcile the results of this study with those obtained by Hales and Emerson [1996] using in situ electrodes, it is necessary to call upon calcite armoring.

The solution rate of biogenic opal in near-surface sediments in the Central Equatorial Pacific is three to eight orders of magnitude lower than similar acid-cleaned samples. Iron, magnesium and calcium aluminosilicates may be the minerals which are forming on the surface of the opal and reducing its solution rate. The scale height of the system studied suggests that diffusive and not advective processes are primarily responsible for the removal of dissolved silica in sediments. Solution budget calculations for this area suggest that 90-99 per cent of the biogenic opal produced in surface waters dissolves before reaching the sediment-water interface; an additional amount dissolves within the sediment and diffuses into bottom waters leaving 0.05-0.15 per cent of the original amount of opal produced by organisms in the sedimentary record. The relative solution potential of the upper 1000 m of the water column varies by more than an order of magnitude from the Antarctic to Equator and may have a pronounced effect on the accumulation rate of biogenic opal in underlying sediments.

We use digital seismic reflection profiles within a 1° * 1° survey area on the Cocos Ridge (COCOS6N) to study the extent and timing of sedimentation and sediment redistribution on the Cocos Ridge. The survey was performed to understand how sediment focusing might affect paleoceanographic flux measurements in a region known for significant downslope transport. COCOS6N contains ODP Site 1241 to ground truth the seismic stratigraphy, and there is a seamount ridge along the base of the ridge that forms a basin (North Flank Basin) to trap sediments transported downslope. Using the Site 1241 seismic stratigraphy and densities extrapolated from wireline logging, we document mass accumulation rates (MARs) since 11.2 Ma. The average sediment thickness at COCOS6N is 196 m, ranging from outcropping basalt at the ridge crest to ~ 400 m at North Flank Basin depocenters. Despite significant sediment transport, the average sedimentation over the entire area is well correlated to sediment fluxes at Site 1241. A low mass accumulation rate (MAR) interval is associated with the 'Miocene carbonate crash' interval even though COCOS6N was at the equator at that time and relatively shallow. Highest MAR occurs within the late Miocene-early Pliocene biogenic bloom interval. Lowest average MAR is in the Pleistocene, as plate tectonic motions caused COCOS6N to leave the equatorial productivity zone. The Pliocene and Pleistocene also exhibit higher loss of sediment from the ridge crest and transport to North Flank Basin. Higher tidal energy on the ridge caused by tectonic movement toward the margin increased sediment focusing in the younger section.

Platinoid element contents were determined in 16 samples of Fe-Mn crusts and nodules collected during dredging deep-sea mound slopes of the Pacific Ocean from the equator to 27°N. The method of neutron activation analysis with pre-concentration of the platinoids was used for these determinations. There is no relationship between platinoid contents in deep-sea (>3000 m) Fe-Mn nodules with depth of sampling, as well as with age of nodule layers. It is concludet that ultramafic rocks are the primary source of platinoids in Fe-Mn nodules.
