Precise mapping of the magnetic field in the CMS barrel yoke using cosmic rays

The CMS detector is designed around a large 4 T superconducting solenoid, enclosed in a 12 000-tonne steel return yoke. A detailed map of the magnetic field is required for the accurate simulation and reconstruction of physics events in the CMS detector, not only in the inner tracking region inside the solenoid but also in the large and complex structure of the steel yoke, which is instrumented with muon chambers. Using a large sample of cosmic muon events collected by CMS in 2008, the field in the steel of the barrel yoke has been determined with a precision of 3 to 8% depending on the location. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in cosmic-ray events

The performance of muon reconstruction in CMS is evaluated using a large data sample of cosmic-ray muons recorded in 2008. Efficiencies of various high-level trigger, identification, and reconstruction algorithms have been measured for a broad range of muon momenta, and were found to be in good agreement with expectations from Monte Carlo simulation. The relative momentum resolution for muons crossing the barrel part of the detector is better than 1% at 10 GeV/c and is about 8% at 500 GeV/c, the latter being only a factor of two worse than expected with ideal alignment conditions. Muon charge misassignment ranges from less than 0.01% at 10GeV/c to about 1% at 500 GeV/c. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA.

A frágil realidade de plástico: um estudo comparativo da imagem Casa de Bonecas em henrik ibsen e katherine mansfield

Considering the importance of significations in literary works, this paper proposes a comparative study of the image of the Doll's House in Henrik Ibsen's play ADoll's House (1879), and Katherine Mansfield's short story The Doll's House, published in the book The Dove's Nest (1923), based on the theories of Gaston Bachelard and Jean Baudrillard. In both cases, one notices that the presence of this image indicatesnot only the construction of these works' environment, but also a criticism of the bourgeois model of a perfect and flawless society, as the described image refers to. However, even though this image shares the same idea in both works, it will be explored differentlyin each case, whether through the search of Nora's character in escaping social conformity as in Ibsen, or through the subtle childlike game experienced by the Kelvey sisters, asin Mansfield.

Translating passive revolution in Brazil

This article sets out to examine Antonio Gramsci's use of the concept of passive revolution and thereby 'translate' it to an alternative historical and contemporary context. If we can observe Gramsci as a 'translator' of Lenin, from Russia to Italy, we can also try to 'translate' Gramsci beyond his original circumstances to alternative conditions, hence the aim of translating Gramsci and his category of passive revolution in order to apprehend some aspects of the particularity of bourgeois revolution in Brazil. The thesis is that the theory and condition of passive revolution in Brazil has unfolded as a hybridism of liberal corporatism, which reveals the slow assumption of bourgeois rule as a form of supremacy. Importantly, the role of the military in this long process is also highlighted. © The Author(s) 2012.
