A micropaleontological study of planktonic assemblages on the partially laminated sapropel S5 (late Pleistocene, marine isotope stage (MIS) 5e) was performed in two piston cores from Urania Basin area (eastern Mediterranean, west of Crete): UM94PC16 and UM94PC31 recovered during a PALEOFLUX Project Cruise. The abundance of Florisphaera profunda indicates the development of a deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) before the anoxic condition at bottom were established, whereas patterns of upper photic zone coccoliths suggest extreme oligotrophy in surface water. The short appearance of Globorotalia scitula and the presence of Globigerinoides ruber in the lower part of sapropel testify to a thermal stratification, also recorded by changes in primary producers. During G. scitula occurrence, diatoms, mainly represented by Pseudosolenia calcar-avis, appear and bloom because of their capability in using nutrients from DCM. Scanning electron microscope analyses performed on selected intervals from UM94PC16 show that the sapropel is organized in microlaminae mostly composed by siliceous microfossils. In particular, sapropel S5 could be related to an enhanced nutrient availability in the lower-middle part of the photic zone, stratified conditions, and a higher continental input.

Oxygen- and carbon-isotope analyses have been performed on the Quaternary planktonic foraminifers of Sites 548 and 549 (DSDP Leg 80) to investigate major water mass changes that occurred in the northeastern Atlantic at different glacial-interglacial cycles and to compare them with the well-defined picture of 18,000 yr. ago. Oxygen-isotope stratigraphy also provides a chronological framework for the more important data on the fauna and flora. Although bioturbation and sedimentary gaps obliterate the climatic and stratigraphic record, general trends in the oceanographic history can be deduced from the isotopic data. Isotopic stratigraphy has tentatively been delineated down to isotopic Stage 16 at Site 548 and in Hole 549A. This stratigraphy fits well with that deduced from benthic foraminiferal d18O changes and with bioclimatic zonations based on foraminiferal associations at Site 549. Variations in the geographic extension and in the flux of the Gulf Stream subtropical waters are inferred from both d18O and d13C changes. Maximal fluxes occurred during the late Pliocene. Northward extension of subtropical waters increased through the various interglacial phases of the early Pleistocene and decreased through the late Pleistocene interglacial phases. Conversely, glacial maxima were more intense after Stage 16. Isotopic Stages 12 and 16 mark times of important change in water mass circulation. The 136 m of calcareous oozes recovered in Hole 810C span the interval from upper Maastrichtian to middle Pleistocene. Three major hiatuses interrupt the sequence, with the topmost part of the Maastrichtian through the entire lower Paleocene, most of the lower Eocene, and the entire middle Eocene through most of the middle Miocene missing. Severe reworking and displacement affected the lower part of the succession from the Maastrichtian through the middle Miocene. Reworking and displacement gradually decreased in the upper portion. Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy enabled us to calibrate precisely the nearly complete magnetic reversal sequence of the Pliocene to the late Pleistocene. Two minor hiatuses detected by calcareous nannofossils across the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary and in the upper lower Pleistocene, respectively, resulted in shortening of the Olduvai and Jaramillo Events within the Matuyama Chron of the magnetic reversal sequence.

We have studied Ocean Drilling Program Site 1060 on the Blake Outer Ridge, which lies beneath the Gulf Stream. We focus on marine isotope stage 3, 60-25 thousand years before present (ka). Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) inferred both from foraminiferal fauna and alkenone ratios, as well as counts of iceberg melt-out debris and benthic stable isotope analyses, enable our record to be interpreted in terms of regional hydrographic changes as well as changing thermohaline circulation (THC). The observed SST record is consistent with the air temperature record from the Greenland ice cores. However, Site 1060 exhibits important differences in detail compared with the ice core record, and when compared to other sites within the North Atlantic, significant longitudinal differences emerge. At Site 1060 in the western Atlantic, all Greenland stadials (GS) whether associated with Heinrich events (HEs) or not, show a similar small amplitude of cooling; mean faunal-based SSTaug during GS is only 1.5°C colder than during Greenland interstadials (GIS). In addition, during GS the coldest SSTs are limited to apparently brief events. This is in contrast to several eastern Atlantic sites where HE stadials exhibit coolings that are enhanced by 2°C compared to other GS and where cold conditions are not restricted to cold pulses but cover 2 ka-long intervals. Furthermore, Site 1060 SSTs remained warm right through each interstadial, in contrast to the sustained and uniform cooling trend through interstadials that is consistently observed in Greenland, indicated by measurements of delta18O in ice.

Planktic foraminiferal (PF) flux and faunal composition from three sediment trap time series of 2002-2004 in the northeastern Atlantic show pronounced year-to-year variations despite similar sea surface temperature (SST). The averaged fauna of the in 2002/2003 is dominated by the species Globigerinita glutinata, whereas in 2003/2004 the averaged fauna is dominated by Globigerinoides ruber. We show that PF species respond primarily to productivity, triggered by the seasonal dynamics of vertical stratification of the upper water column. Multivariate statistical analysis reveals three distinct species groups, linked to bulk particle flux, to chlorophyll concentrations and to summer/fall oligotrophy with high SST and stratification. We speculate that the distinct nutrition strategies of strictly asymbiontic, facultatively symbiontic, and symbiontic species may play a key role in explaining their abundances and temporal succession. Advection of water masses within the Azores Current and species expatriation result in a highly diverse PF assemblage. The Azores Frontal Zone may have influenced the trap site in 2002, indicated by subsurface water cooling, by highest PF flux and high flux of the deep-dwelling species Globorotalia scitula. Similarity analyses with core top samples from the global ocean including 746 sites from the Atlantic suggest that the trap faunas have only poor analogs in the surface sediments. These differences have to be taken into account when estimating past oceanic properties from sediment PF data in the eastern subtropical North Atlantic.

We present Mg/Ca data for Globigerina bulloides from 10 core top sites in the southwest Pacific Ocean analyzed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Mg/Ca values in G. bulloides correlate with observed ocean temperatures (7°C-19°C), and when combined with previously published data, an integrated Mg/Ca-temperature calibration for 7°C-31°C is derived where Mg/Ca (mmol/mol) = 0.955 * e**(0.068 * T) (r**2 = 0.95). Significant variability of Mg/Ca values (20%-30%) was found for the four visible chambers of G. bulloides, with the final chamber consistently recording the lowest Mg/Ca and is interpreted, in part, to reflect changes in the depth habitat with ontogeny. Incipient and variable dissolution of the thin and fragile final chamber, and outermost layer concomitantly added to all chambers, caused by different cleaning techniques prior to solution-based ICPMS analyses, may explain the minor differences in previously published Mg/Ca-temperature calibrations for this species. If the lower Mg/Ca of the final chamber reflects changes in depth habitat, then LA-ICPMS of the penultimate (or older) chambers will most sensitively record past changes in near-surface ocean temperatures. Mean size-normalized G. bulloides test weights correlate negatively with ocean temperature (T = 31.8 * e**(-30.5*wtN); r**2 = 0.90), suggesting that in the southwest Pacific Ocean, temperature is a prominent control on shell weight in addition to carbonate ion levels.
