In most Western postindustrial societies today, the population is aging, businesses are faced with global integration, and important migration flows are taking place. Increasingly work organizations are hiring crossnational and multicultural workteams. In this situation it is important to understand the influence of certain individual and cultural characteristics on the process of professional integration. The present study explores the links between personality traits, demographic characteristics (age, sex, education, income, and nationality), work engagement, and job stress. The sample consisted of 618 participants, including 394 Swiss workers (200 women, 194 men) and 224 foreigners living and working in Switzerland (117 women, 107 men). Each participant completed the NEO-FFI, the UWES, and the GWSS questionnaires. Our results show an interaction between age and nationality with respect to work engagement and general job stress. The levels of work engagement and job stress appear to increase with age among national wotkers, whereas they decrease among foreign workers. In addition, work engagement was negatively associated with Neuroticism and positively with the other four personality dimensions. Finally, job stress was positively associated with Neuroticism and Conscientiousness, and negatively associated with Extraversion. However, the strength of these relationships appeared to vary according to the worker's nationality, age, sex, education, and income.

Järvholm and Co-workers (2009) proposed a conceptual model for research on working life. Models are powerful communication and decision tools. This model is strongly unidirectional and does not cover the mentioned interactions in the arguments.With help of a genealogy of work and of health it is shown that work and health are interactive and have to be analysed on the background of society.Key words: research model, work, health, occupational health, society, interaction, discussion paperRemodellierung der von Järvholm et al. Die Einflussfaktoren im Modell verlaufen jedoch nur in einer Richtung und bilden die interaktiven Argumente im Text nicht ab. Mit Hilfe einer Genealogie der Begriffe Arbeit und Gesundheit wird aufgezeigt, dass Arbeit und Gesundheit sich gegenseitig beeinflussen und nur vor dem Hintergrund der jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Kontextfaktoren zu analysieren sind.Introduction : After an interesting introduction about the objectives of research on working life, Järvholm and Co-workers (2009) manage to define a conceptual model for working life research out of a small survey of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) definitions. The strong point of their model is the entity 'working life' including personal development, as well as career paths and aging. Yet, the model Järvholm et al. (2009) propose is strangely unidirectional; the arrows point from the population to working life, from there to health and to disease, as well as to productivity and economic resources. The diagram only shows one feed-back loop: between economic resources and health. We all know that having a chronic disease condition influences work and working capacity. Economic resources have a strong influence on work, too. Having personal economic resources will influence the kind of work someone accepts and facilitate access to continuous professional education. A third observation is that society is not present in the model, although this is less the case in the arguments. In fact, there is an incomprehensible gap between the arguments brought forth by Järvholm and co-workers and their reductionist model.Switzerland has a very low coverage of occupational health specialists. Switzerland is a long way from fulfilling the WHO's recommendations on workers' access to OSH services as described in its Global plan of action. The Institute for Work and Health (IST) in Lausanne is the only organisation which covers the major domains of OSH research that are occupational medicine, occupational hygiene, ergonomic and psychosocial research. As the country's sole occupational health institution we are forced to reflect the objectives of working life research so as not to waste the scare resources available.I will set out below a much shortened genealogy of work and of health, with the aim of extending Järvholm et al's (2009) analyses on the perspectives of working life research in two directions. Firstly towards the interactive nature of work and health and the integration of society, and secondly towards the question of what working life means or where working life could be situated.Work, as we know it today - paid work regulated by a contract as the basis for sustaining life and as a base for social rights - was born in modern era. Therefore I will start my genealogy in the pre-modern era, focus on the important changes that occurred during industrial revolution and the modern era and end in 2010 taking into account the enormous transformations of the past 20-30 years. I will put aside some 810 years of advances in science and technology that have expanded the world's limits and human understanding, and restrict my genealogy to work and to health/body implicating also the societal realm. Résumé Régulation de l'expression de la Connexin36 dans les cellules sécrétrices d'insuline La communication intercellulaire est en partie assurée via des jonctions communicantes de type "gap". Dans la cellule ß pancréatique, plusieurs observations indiquent que le couplage assuré par des jonctions gap formées parla Connexine36 (Cx36) est impliqué dans le contrôle de la sécrétion de l'insuline. De plus, nous avons récemment démontré qu'un niveau précis d'expression de la Cx36 est nécessaire pour maintenir une bonne coordination de l'ensemble des cellules ß, et permettre ainsi une sécrétion synchrone et contrôlée d'insuline. Le développement du diabète et du syndrome métabolique est partiellement dû à une altération de la capacité des cellules ß à sécréter de l'insuline en réponse à une augmentation de la glycémie. Cette altération est en partie causée par l'augmentation prolongée des taux circulant de glucose, mais aussi de lipides, sous la forme d'acides gras libres, et de LDL (Low Density Lipoproteins), particules assurant le transport des acides gras et du cholestérol dans le sang. Nous avons étudié la régulation de l'expression de la Cx36 dans différentes conditions reflétant la physiopathologie du diabète de type 2 et du syndrome métabolique et démontré qu'une exposition prolongée à des concentrations élevées de glucose, de LDL, ainsi que de palmitate (acide gras saturé le plus abondant dans l'organisme), inhibent l'expression de la Cx36 dans les cellules ß. Cette inhibition implique l'activation de la PKA (Proteine Kinase A), qui stimule à son tour l'expression du facteur de transcription ICER-1 (Inductible cAMP Early Repressor-1). Ce puissant répresseur se fixe spécifiquement sur un motif CRE (cAMP Response Element), situé dans le promoteur du gène de la Cx36, inhibant ainsi son expression. Nous avons de plus démontré que des cytokines pro-inflammatoires, qui pourraient contribuer au développement du diabète, inhibent également l'expression de la Cx36. Cependant, les cytokines agissent indépendamment du répresseur ICER-1, mais selon un mécanisme requérant l'activation de l'AMPK (AMP dependant protein kinase). Sachant qu'un contrôle précis des niveaux d'expression de la Cx36 est un élément déterminant pour une sécrétion optimale de l'insuline, nos résultats suggèrent que la Cx36 pourrait être impliquée dans l'altération de la sécrétion de l'insuline contribuant à l'apparition du diabète de type 2. Summary A particular way by which cells communicate with each other is mediated by gap junctions, transmembrane structures providing a direct pathway for the diffusion of small molecules between adjacent cells. Gap junctional communication is required to maintain a proper functioning of insulin-secreting ß-cells. Moreover, the expression levels of connexin36 (Cx36), the sole gap junction protein expressed in ß-cells, are critical in maintaining glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. Chronic hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia exert deleterious effects on insulin secretion and may contribute to the progressive ß-cell failure linked to the development of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Since modulations of the Cx36 levels might impair ß-cell function, the general aim of this work was to elucidate wether elevated levels of glucose and lipids affect Cx36 expression. The first part of this work was dedicated to the study of the effect of high glucose concentrations on Cx36 expression. We demonstrated that glucose transcriptionally down-regulates the expression of Cx36 in insulin-secreting cells through activation of the protein kinase A (PKA), which in turn stimulates the expression of the inducible cAMP early repressor-1 (ICER-1). This repressor binds to a highly conserved cAMP response element (CRE) located in the Cx36 promoter, thereby inhibiting Cx36 expression. The second part of this thesis consisted in studying the effects of sustained exposure to free fatty acids (FFA) and human lipoproteins on Cx36 levels. The experiments revealed that the most abundant FFA, palmitate, as well as the atherogenic low density lipoproteins (LDL), also stimulate ICER-1 expression, resulting in Cx36 down-regulation. Finally, the third part of the work focused on the consequences of long-term exposure to proinflammatory cytokines on Cx36 content. Interleukin-1 ß (IL-1 ß) inhibits Cx36 expression and its effect is potentialized by tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and interferon γ (IFNγ). We further unveiled that the cytokines effect on Cx36 levels requires activation of the AMP dependent protein kinase (AMPK). Prolonged exposures to glucose, palmitate, LDL, and pro-inflammatory cytokines have all been proposed to contribute to the development of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Since Cx36 expression levels are critical to maintain ß-cell function, Cx36 down-regulation by glucose, lipids, and cytokines might participate to the ß-cell failure associated with diabetes development.

El objetivo de este proyecto consiste en el estudio de los parámetros circuitales (condensadores, bobinas…) de un resonador, realizado con estructuras microstrip, donde permita obtener unos resultados de esos parámetros circuitales cambiando los valores físicos del diseño, tales como la longitud y la anchura del resonador a partir de las medidas de los parámetros S. Para llevar a cabo dicho trabajo, se desarrolla en primer lugar toda la teoría necesaria de resonadores. Empezando por el funcionamiento y la estructura del resonador diseñado, y mostrando especial interés en el modelado de dicho resonador. Seguidamente, se estudia y analiza su comportamiento a través de las simulaciones de los parámetros S. Una vez se ha estudiado y analizado su comportamiento, se procede con las modificaciones de los parámetros físicos y se analiza a través de las simulaciones de los parámetros S cómo afectan estas modificaciones en los parámetros circuitales. Donde se utilizan una serie de herramientas que agilizan la extracción de los valores de los parámetros circuitales del resonador.

Bipolar disorder has a major deleterious impact on many aspects of a patient's functioning and health-related quality of life. Although the formal measurement of these deficits has been neglected until recently, many well-designed trials now include an assessment of functioning and health-related quality of life using one or more rating scales. This review describes recent developments in the measurement of functioning and health-related quality of life in bipolar disorder, and discusses the evidence that medications that improve symptoms in bipolar disorder also offer clinically relevant benefits in functioning and health-related quality of life. Direct comparisons of the benefits of medications including atypical antipsychotics are problematic due to differences in trial populations, study durations and rating scales. Data from quetiapine trials indicate that this medication offers prompt and sustained improvement of functioning in patients with mania and enhancement of health-related quality of life in patients with bipolar depression, to accompany the significant improvements in mood episodes.

The new single Equality Duty represents a next step in equality legislation. The existing public sector equality duties for race, disability and gender were pioneering pieces of legislation which placed the public sector at the forefront of tackling discrimination and inequality.Many have seen the benefits the existing duties have delivered, but now is the time to go further. the aim of this bill is to extend the benefits of the equality duties to the other protected characteristics of age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, and religion or belief.The Equality Duty will require public bodies to think about how they can eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations for all the protected groups.
