The design of modulation schemes for the physical layer network-coded two way relaying scenario is considered with the protocol which employs two phases: Multiple access (MA) Phase and Broadcast (BC) phase. It was observed by Koike-Akino et al. that adaptively changing the network coding map used at the relay according to the channel conditions greatly reduces the impact of multiple access interference which occurs at the relay during the MA phase. In other words, the set of all possible channel realizations (the complex plane) is quantized into a finite number of regions, with a specific network coding map giving the best performance in a particular region. We obtain such a quantization analytically for the case when M-PSK (for M any power of 2) is the signal set used during the MA phase. We show that the complex plane can be classified into two regions: a region in which any network coding map which satisfies the so called exclusive law gives the same best performance and a region in which the choice of the network coding map affects the performance, which is further quantized based on the choice of the network coding map which optimizes the performance. The quantization thus obtained analytically, leads to the same as the one obtained using computer search for 4-PSK signal set by Koike-Akino et al., for the specific value of M = 4.

The design of modulation schemes for the physical layer network-coded two way relaying scenario is considered with the protocol which employs two phases: Multiple access (MA) Phase and Broadcast (BC) Phase. It was observed by Koike-Akino et al. that adaptively changing the network coding map used at the relay according to the channel conditions greatly reduces the impact of multiple access interference which occurs at the relay during the MA Phase and all these network coding maps should satisfy a requirement called the exclusive law. We show that every network coding map that satisfies the exclusive law is representable by a Latin Square and conversely, and this relationship can be used to get the network coding maps satisfying the exclusive law. Using the structural properties of the Latin Squares for a given set of parameters, the problem of finding all the required maps is reduced to finding a small set of maps for M-PSK constellations. This is achieved using the notions of isotopic and transposed Latin Squares. Furthermore, the channel conditions for which the bit-wise XOR will perform well is analytically obtained which holds for all values of M (for M any power of 2). We illustrate these results for the case where both the end users use QPSK constellation.

We develop an approximate analytical technique for evaluating the performance of multi-hop networks based on beacon-less CSMA/CA as standardised in IEEE 802.15.4, a popular standard for wireless sensor networks. The network comprises sensor nodes, which generate measurement packets, and relay nodes which only forward packets. We consider a detailed stochastic process at each node, and analyse this process taking into account the interaction with neighbouring nodes via certain unknown variables (e.g., channel sensing rates, collision probabilities, etc.). By coupling these analyses of the various nodes, we obtain fixed point equations that can be solved numerically to obtain the unknown variables, thereby yielding approximations of time average performance measures, such as packet discard probabilities and average queueing delays. Different analyses arise for networks with no hidden nodes and networks with hidden nodes. We apply this approach to the performance analysis of tree networks rooted at a data sink. Finally, we provide a validation of our analysis technique against simulations.

In this study the cooling performance due to air flow and aerodynamics of the Formula Student open wheeled race car has been investigated and optimized with the help of CFD simulations and experimental validation. The race car in context previously suffered from overheating problems. Flow analysis was carried out based on the detailed race car 3D model (NITK Racing 2012 formula student race car). Wind tunnel experiments were carried out on the same. The results obtained from the computer simulations are compared with experimental results obtained from wind tunnel testing of the full car. Through this study it was possible to locate the problem areas and hence choose the best configuration for the cooling duct. The CFD analysis helped in calculating the mass flow rate, pressure and velocity distribution for different velocities of the car which is then used to determine the heat dissipated by the radiator. Area of flow separation could be visualized and made sure smooth airflow into the radiator core area. This significantly increased the cooling performance of the car with reduction in drag.

Space shift keying (SSK) is an attractive modulation technique for multi-antenna communications. In SSK, only one among the available transmit antennas is activated during one channel use, and the index of the chosen transmit antenna conveys information. In this paper, we analyze the performance of SSK in multi-hop, multi-branch cooperative relaying systems. We consider the decode-and-forward relaying protocol, where a relay forwards the decoded symbol if it decodes the symbol correctly from the received signal. We derive closed-form expressions for the end-to-end bit error rate of SSK in this system. Analytical and simulation results match very well.

In an underlay cognitive radio (CR) system, a secondary user can transmit when the primary is transmitting but is subject to tight constraints on the interference it causes to the primary receiver. Amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying is an effective technique that significantly improves the performance of a CR by providing an alternate path for the secondary transmitter's signal to reach the secondary receiver. We present and analyze a novel optimal relay gain adaptation policy (ORGAP) in which the relay is interference aware and optimally adapts both its gain and transmit power as a function of its local channel gains. ORGAP minimizes the symbol error probability at the secondary receiver subject to constraints on the average relay transmit power and on the average interference caused to the primary. It is different from ad hoc AF relaying policies and serves as a new and fundamental theoretical benchmark for relaying in an underlay CR. We also develop a near-optimal and simpler relay gain adaptation policy that is easy to implement. An extension to a multirelay scenario with selection is also developed. Our extensive numerical results for single and multiple relay systems quantify the power savings achieved over several ad hoc policies for both MPSK and MQAM constellations.

We consider a setting in which a single item of content is disseminated in a population of mobile nodes by opportunistic copying when pairs of nodes come in radio contact. The nodes in the population may either be interested in receiving the content (referred to as destinations) or not yet interested in receiving the content (referred to as relays). We consider a model for the evolution of popularity, the process by which relays get converted into destinations. A key contribution of our work is to model and study the joint evolution of content popularity and its spread in the population. Copying the content to relay nodes is beneficial since they can help spread the content to destinations, and could themselves be converted into destinations. We derive a fluid limit for the joint evolution model and obtain optimal policies for copying to relay nodes in order to deliver content to a desired fraction of destinations, while limiting the fraction of relay nodes that get the content but never turn into destinations. We prove that a time-threshold policy is optimal for controlling the copying to relays, i.e., there is an optimal time-threshold up to which all opportunities for copying to relays are exploited, and after which relays are not copied to. We then utilize simulations and numerical evaluations to provide insights into the effects of various system parameters on the optimally controlled co-evolution model.

In this paper, space-shift keying (SSK) is considered for multihop multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) networks. In SSK, only one among n(s) = 2(m) available transmit antennas, chosen on the basis of m information bits, is activated during transmission. We consider two different systems of multihop co-operation, where each node has multiple antennas and employs SSK. In system I, a multihop diversity relaying scheme is considered. In system II, a multihop multibranch relaying scheme is considered. In both systems, we adopt decode-and-forward (DF) relaying, where each relay forwards the signal only when it correctly decodes. We analyze the end-to-end bit error rate (BER) and diversity order of both the systems with SSK. For binary SSK (n(s) = 2), our analytical BER expression is exact, and our numerical results show that the BERs evaluated through the analytical expression overlap with those obtained through Monte Carlo simulations. For nonbinary SSK (n(s) > 2), we derive an approximate BER expression, where the analytically evaluated BER results closely follow the simulated BER results. We show the comparison of the BERs of SSK and conventional phase-shift keying (PSK) and also show the instances where SSK outperforms PSK. We also present the diversity analyses for SSK in systems I and II, which predict the achievable diversity orders as a function of system parameters.

Using the spatial modulation approach, where only one transmit antenna is active at a time, we propose two transmission schemes for two-way relay channel using physical layer network coding with space time coding using coordinate interleaved orthogonal designs (CIODs). It is shown that using two uncorrelated transmit antennas at the nodes, but using only one RF transmit chain and space-time coding across these antennas can give a better performance without using any extra resources and without increasing the hardware implementation cost and complexity. In the first transmission scheme, two antennas are used only at the relay, adaptive network coding (ANC) is employed at the relay and the relay transmits a CIOD space time block code (STBC). This gives a better performance compared to an existing ANC scheme for two-way relay channel which uses one antenna each at all the three nodes. It is shown that for this scheme at high SNR the average end-to-end symbol error probability (SEP) is upper bounded by twice the SEP of a point-to-point fading channel. In the second transmission scheme, two transmit antennas are used at all the three nodes, CIOD STBCs are transmitted in multiple access and broadcast phases. This scheme provides a diversity order of two for the average end-to-end SEP with an increased decoding complexity of O(M-3) for an arbitrary signal set and O(M-2 root M) for square QAM signal set. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes performs better than the existing ANC schemes under perfect and imperfect channel state information.

In the context of wireless sensor networks, we are motivated by the design of a tree network spanning a set of source nodes that generate packets, a set of additional relay nodes that only forward packets from the sources, and a data sink. We assume that the paths from the sources to the sink have bounded hop count, that the nodes use the IEEE 802.15.4 CSMA/CA for medium access control, and that there are no hidden terminals. In this setting, starting with a set of simple fixed point equations, we derive explicit conditions on the packet generation rates at the sources, so that the tree network approximately provides certain quality of service (QoS) such as end-to-end delivery probability and mean delay. The structures of our conditions provide insight on the dependence of the network performance on the arrival rate vector, and the topological properties of the tree network. Our numerical experiments suggest that our approximations are able to capture a significant part of the QoS aware throughput region (of a tree network), that is adequate for many sensor network applications. Furthermore, for the special case of equal arrival rates, default backoff parameters, and for a range of values of target QoS, we show that among all path-length-bounded trees (spanning a given set of sources and the data sink) that meet the conditions derived in the paper, a shortest path tree achieves the maximum throughput. The problem of cooperative beamforming for maximizing the achievable data rate of an energy constrained two-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) network is considered. Assuming perfect channel state information (CSI) of all the nodes, we evaluate the optimal scaling factor for the relay nodes. Along with individual power constraint on each of the relay nodes, we consider a weighted sum power constraint. The proposed iterative algorithm initially solves a set of relaxed problems with weighted sum power constraint and then updates the solution to accommodate individual constraints. These relaxed problems in turn are solved using a sequence of Quadratic Eigenvalue Problems (QEP). The key contribution of this letter is the generalization of cooperative beamforming to incorporate both the individual and weighted sum constraint. Furthermore, we have proposed a novel algorithm based on Quadratic Eigenvalue Problem (QEP) and discussed its convergence.

The problem of secure unicast communication over a two hop Amplify-and-Forward wireless relay network with multiple eavesdroppers is considered. Assuming that a receiver (destination or eavesdropper) can decode a message only if the received SNR is above a predefined threshold, we consider this problem in two scenarios. In the first scenario, we maximize the SNR at the legitimate destination, subject to the condition that the received SNR at each eavesdropper is below the target threshold. Due to the non-convex nature of the objective function and eavesdroppers' constraints, we transform variables and obtain a quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) with convex constraints, which can be solved efficiently. When the constraints are not convex, we consider a semidefinite relaxation (SDR) to obtain computationally efficient approximate solution. In the second scenario, we minimize the total power consumed by all relay nodes, subject to the condition that the received SNR at the legitimate destination is above the threshold and at every eavesdropper, it is below the corresponding threshold. We propose a semidefinite relaxation of the problem in this scenario and also provide an analytical lower bound.

The model incorporates packet generation at the sensor nodes and queues at the sensor nodes and relay nodes. We demonstrate the accuracy of our model by an extensive comparison with simulations. As an additional assessment of the accuracy of the model, we utilize it in an algorithm for sensor network design with quality-of-service (QoS) objectives, and show that designs obtained using our model actually satisfy the QoS constraints (as validated by simulating the networks), and the predictions are accurate to well within 10% as compared to the simulation results in a regime where the packet discard probability is low. For the physical-layer network-coded wireless two-way relaying, it was observed by Koike-Akino et al. that adaptively changing the network coding map used at the relay according to channel conditions greatly reduces the impact of multiple-access interference, which occurs at the relay, and all these network coding maps should satisfy a requirement called exclusive law. We extend this approach to an accumulate-compute-and-forward protocol, which employs two phases: a multiple access (MA) phase consisting of two channel uses with independent messages in each channel use and a broadcast (BC) phase having one channel use. Assuming that the two users transmit points from the same 4-phase-shift keying (PSK) constellation, every such network coding map that satisfies the exclusive law can be represented by a Latin square of side 16, and conversely, this relationship can be used to get the network coding maps satisfying the exclusive law. Two methods of obtaining this network coding map to be used at the relay are discussed. Using the structural properties of the Latin squares for a given set of parameters, the problem of finding all the required maps is reduced to finding a small set of maps for the case. Having obtained all the Latin squares, a criterion is provided to select a Latin square for a given realization of fade state. This criterion turns out to be the same as the one used byMuralidharan et al. for two-stage bidirectional relaying.
