Objective. To evaluate the influence of shaft design on the shaping ability of 3 rotary nickel-titanium (NiTi) systems. Study design. Sixty curved mesial canals of mandibular molars were used. Specimens were scanned by spiral tomography before and after canal preparation using ProTaper, ProFile, and ProSystem GT rotary instruments. One-millimeter-thick slices were scanned from the apical end point to the pulp chamber. The cross-sectional images from the slices taken earlier and after canal preparation at the apical, coronal, and midroot levels were compared. Results. The mean working time was 137.22 +/- 5.15 s. Mean transportation, mean centering ratio, and percentage of area increase were 0.022 +/- 0.131 mm, 0.21 +/- 0.11, and 76.90 +/- 42.27%, respectively, with no statistical differences (P > .05). Conclusions. All instruments were able to shape curved mesial canals in mandibular molars to size 30 without significant errors. The differences in shaft designs seemed not to affect their shaping capabilities.

A quartz crystal microbalance modified by the attachment of silica particles derivatized with the aminopolycarboxylate ligand N-[(3-trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine-N,N',N'-triacetic acid has been employed to assess conditions under which mercury (II), lead (II), and silver (I) nitrates may be separated in aqueous solution. The separation protocol, which involved removal of Hg(II), as [HgI4](2-), and Pb(II) with H+ was successfully applied to a batchwise separation of the 3 metal ions.

A body of published evidence suggests that a significant portion of enamel matrix protein synthesized by ameloblasts localises in the lysosomal-endosomal organelles of these enamel organ cells. Little is known regarding the lysosomal proteolytic activities during amelogenesis. The aims of this study were to detect and measure the activities of lysosomal peptidases cathepsin B (E.C. 3.4.22.1) and dipeptidyl-peptidase II (E.C. 3.4.14.2) in the enamel organ of the rat incisor and to ascertain whether rat enamel matrix proteins are degraded by these peptidases in vitro. Whole enamel organs were dissected from rat mandibular incisors. Enamel protein was also collected from the rat teeth. Analysis indicated that the rat incisor enamel organs contained specific activities of both dipeptidyl-peptidase II and cathepsin B at levels comparable with those of kidney which is rich in both these lysosomal peptidases. Gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting demonstrated that both cathepsin B and dipeptidyl-peptidase II were able to substantially degrade the rat enamel proteins in vitro. Based on these observations, we propose that lysosomal proteases have roles in amelogenesis in the intracellular degradation of amelogenins.

A new addition to the family of single-molecule magnets is reported: an Fete cage stabilized with benzoate and pyridonate ligands. Monte Carlo methods have been used to derive exchange parameters within the cage, and hence model susceptibility behavior.

Mono- and dicopper(II) complexes of a series of potentially bridging hexaamine ligands have been prepared and characterized in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. A new ball mill scale-up procedure is developed which uses laboratory data to predict the performance of MI-scale ball mill circuits. This procedure contains two laboratory tests. These laboratory tests give the data for the determination of the parameters of a ball mill model. A set of scale-up criteria then scales-up these parameters. The procedure uses the scaled-up parameters to simulate the steady state performance of the full-scale mill circuit. At the end of the simulation, the scale-up procedure gives the size distribution, the volumetric flowrate and the mass flowrate of all the streams in the circuit, and the mill power draw. A worked example shows how the new ball mill scale-up procedure is executed. This worked example uses laboratory data to predict the performance of a full-scale re-grind mill circuit. This circuit consists of a ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. The MI-scale ball mill has a diameter (inside liners) of 1.85m. The scale-up procedure shows that the full-scale circuit produces a product (hydrocyclone overflow) that has an 80% passing size of 80 mum. The circuit has a recirculating load of 173%. A palladium(II)-catalyzed hydroxycyclization-carbonylation-lactonization sequence with appropriate pent-4-ene-1,3-diols provides efficient access to the bicyclic gamma -lactones, 5-n-butyl- and 5-n-hexyltetrahydrofuro-[3,2-b]furan-2(3H)-ones (3) and (4), respectively, in both racemic and enantiomeric forms. Some of the substrate pent-4-ene-1,3-diols of high enantiomeric excess (ee) have been derived from racemic terminal epoxides by hydrolytic kinetic resolution (HKR) using cobalt (III)-salen complexes. (9Z,12R)-(+)-Ricinoleic acid also serves as a chiral pool source of other pent-4-ene-1,3-diols. These syntheses and enantioselective gas chromatography confirm the structures and absolute stereochemistry of the lactones in some species of parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The highly abundant 5-n-hexyltetrahydrofuro-[3,2-b]furan-2(3H)-one (4) in Diachasmimorpha kraussii and D. longicaudata is of high ee (> 99%) with (3aR,5R,6aR) stereochemistry.

The generalization of the quasi mode theory of macroscopic quantization in quantum optics and cavity QED presented in the previous paper, is applied to provide a fully quantum theoretic derivation of the laws of reflection and refraction at a boundary. The quasi mode picture of this process involves the annihilation of a photon travelling in the incident region quasi mode, and the subsequent creation of a photon in either the incident region or transmitted region quasi modes. The derivation of the laws of reflection and refraction is achieved through the dual application of the quasi mode theory and a quantum scattering theory based on the Heisenberg picture. Formal expressions from scattering theory are given for the reflection and transmission coefficients. The behaviour of the intensity for a localized one photon wave packet coming in at time minus infinity from the incident direction is examined and it is shown that at time plus infinity, the light intensity is only significant where the classical laws of reflection and refraction predict. The occurrence of both refraction and reflection is dependent upon the quasi mode theory coupling constants between incident and transmitted region quasi modes being nonzero, and it is seen that the contributions to such coupling constants come from the overlap of the mode functions in the boundary layer region, as might be expected from a microscopic theory.

The effects of the recently identified human peptide urotensin-II (hU-II) were investigated on human cardiac muscle contractility and coronary artery tone. In right atrial trabeculae from non-failing hearts, hU-II caused a concentration-dependent increase in contractile force (pEC(50)=9.5+/-0.1; E-max= 31.3+/-4.8% compared to 9.25 mM Ca2+; n = 9) with no change in contraction duration. In right ventricular trabeculae from explanted hearts, 20 nM hU-II caused a small increase in contractile force (7.8+/-1.4% compared to 9.25 mM Ca2+; n= 3/6 tissues from 2 out of 4 patients). The peptide caused arrhythmic contractions in 3/26 right atrial trabeculae from 3/9 patients in an experimental model of arrhythmia and therefore has less potential to cause arrhythmias than ET-1. hU-II (20 nM) increased tone (17.9% of the response to 90 mM KCI) in 7/7 tissues from 1 patient, with no response detected in 8/8 tissues from 2 patients. hU-II is a potent cardiac stimulant with low efficacy.

Alumina intercalated laponite (Al-laponite) was prepared with a polyethylene oxide (PEO) surfactant and used as supports of nickel catalysts for the carbon dioxide reforming reaction with methane to synthesis gas. The effects of the supports of intercalated laponite and catalyst preparation on catalytic activity, stability and carbon deposition were investigated for the above reforming reaction. We found that the pore structure of the Al-laponite supports can be tailored with the surfactant and the catalyst with well-developed porosity exhibited higher catalytic activity and a longer time of catalyst stability. Single-unit electrophysiology was used to record the nerve impulses from the carbon dioxide receptors of female Queensland fruit flies, Bactrocera tryoni. The receptors responded to stimulation in a phasic-tonic manner and also had a period of inhibition of the nerve impulses after the end of stimulation, at high stimulus intensities. The cell responding to carbon dioxide was presented with a range of environmental odorants and found to respond to methyl butyrate and 2-butanone. The coding characteristics of the carbon dioxide cell and the ability to detect other odorants are discussed, with particular reference to the known behavior of the fly.
