In3+ was used as dopant for BaZrO3 proton conductor and 30 at%-doped BaZrO3 samples (BaZr0.7In 0.3O3-δ, BZI) were prepared as electrolyte materials for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The BZI material showed a much improved sinteractivity compared with the conventional Y-doped BaZrO 3. The BZI pellets reached almost full density after sintering at 1600 °C for 10 h, whereas the Y-doped BaZrO3 samples still remained porous under the same sintering conditions. The conductivity measurements indicated that BZI pellets showed smaller bulk but improved grain boundary proton conductivity, when compared with Y-doped BaZrO3 samples. A total proton conductivity of 1.7 × 10-3 S cm -1 was obtained for the BZI sample at 700 °C in wet 10% H 2 atmosphere. The BZI electrolyte material also showed adequate chemical stability against CO2 and H2O, which is promising for application in fuel cells.

The tie-lines representing the inter-crystalline ion exchange equilibria between the NiCr2O4-NiAl2O4 spinet solid solution and Cr2O3-Al2O3 corundum solid solution are determined by electron microprobe andEDAX pointcountanalysis of the oxide phases equilibrated with metallic Ni at 1373 K. The component activities in the spinet solid solution are derived from the tie-lines and thermodynamic data for Cr2O3-Al2O3 solid solution available in the literature. The Gibbs energy of mixing of the spinet solid solution calculated from the experimental data is discussed in relation to the values derived from the cation distribution models which assume random mixing of cations on both tetrahedral and octahedral sites. Positive deviation from the models is observed indicating significant positive enthalpy contribution arising form the size mismatch between Al+3 and Ni+2 ions on the tetrahedral site and Al+3, Ni+2 and Cr+3 on the octahedral site. Variation of the oxygen potential for threephase equilibrium involving metallic nickel, spinet solid solution and corundum solid solution is computed as a function of composition of the solid solutions at 1373 K. The oxygen potential exhibits a minimum at aluminum cationic fraction eta(Al)/(eta(Al) + eta(Cr)) = 0.524 in the oxide solid solutions.

Refining reactions in steelmaking primarily involve oxidation of impurity element(s). The oxidation potential of the slag and the activity of oxygen in the metal (h(O)) are the major factors controlling these chemical reactions. In turn, the oxidation potential of the slag is influenced strongly by the equilibrium distribution of oxygen between ferrous and ferric oxides. We recently investigated the activity coefficient of FeO in steelmaking slag and the effect of chemical composition thereon. This work is focused on estimation of theactivity coefficient of Fe2O3.

RECENT work on the lower oxide of sulphur1,2 has established that disulphur monoxide (S2O) or its polymeric form is produced when sulphur is burnt in oxygen under reduced pressure. It has now been shown that it is possible to make use of an oxide of a heavy metal as a source of limited supply of oxygen to prepare the disulphur monoxide. For example, when a mixture of finely powdered cupric oxide and sulphur (1 : 5 by weight) is heated under vacuum in a glass tube gaseous products are evolved. which, on cooling in a trap surrounded by liquid air, will give an orange-red condensate (S2O)x. This condensate also gives off sulphur dioxide in stages as the temperature is raised, finally leaving a residue of elemental sulphur. Copper sulphide and excess of sulphur are left behind in the reaction tube.

Two segmented polyethylene oxides, SPEO-3 and SPEO-4, were prepared using a novel transetherification methodology. Their structures were confirmed by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The complexation of these SPEO's with alkali-metal ions in solution was investigated by C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The mole-fraction method was used to determine the complexation ratio of SPEO with LIClO4 at 25 degrees C, which showed that these formed 1:1 (polymer repeat unit/salt) complexes. The association constant, K, for the complex formation was calculated from the variation of the chemical shift values with salt concentration, using a standard nonlinear least-square fitting procedure. The maximum change in chemical shift (Delta delta) and the K values suggest that both SPEO-3 and SPEO-4 formed stronger complexes with lithium salts than with sodium salts. Unexpectedly, the K values were found to be different, when the variation of delta of different carbons was used in the fitting procedure. This suggests that several possible complexed species may be in equilibrium with the uncomplexed one. Structurally similar model compounds were also prepared and their complexation studies indicated that all of them also formed 1:1 complexes with Li salts. Interestingly, it was observed that the polymers gave higher K values suggesting the formation of more stable complexes in polymers when compared to the model analogues. We report a method for the deposition of thin films and thick coatings of metal oxides through the liquid medium, involving the micro waveirradiation of a solution of a metal-organic complex in a suitable dielectric solvent. The process is a combination of sol-gel and dip-coating methods, wherein coatings can be obtained on nonconducting and semiconducting substrates, within a few minutes. Thin films of nanostructured ZnO (wurtzite) have been obtained on Si(100), glass and polymer substrates, the nanostructure determined by process parameters The coatings are strongly adherent and uniform over 15 mm x 15 mm, the growth rate similar to 0.25 mu m/min Coatings of nanocrystalline Fe2O3 and Ga2O3 have also been obtained The method is scalable to larger substrates, and is promising as a low temperature technique for coating dielectric substrates, including flexible polymers. 2,4-Lutidine-1-oxide (2,4-LutO) complexes of lanthanide perchlorates of the formulae Ln2(2,4-LutO)13(ClO4)6 (Ln = Pr and Nd) and Ln2(2,4-LutO)15 (ClO4)6 (Ln = La, Tb, Dy, Ho and Yb) have been prepared and characterised by chemical analysis, IR, NMR, conductance and electronic spectral data. Proton NMR data along with the IR data show that the ligand coordinates to the metal ion through the oxygen. Conductance data of the complexes in acetone and nitrobenzene indicate that the perchlorate is not coordinated to the metal ion.

A new class of layered alkali metal-MoO3 bronzes,AxMoO3 (A =Li, Na, K, Rb), with nearly the same unit cell parameters as the host oxide has been synthesized by the solid-state reaction of MoO3 with alkali metal iodides around 575 K; LixMoO3 absorbs H2O causing an increase in theb parameter of the unit cell. Hexagonal potassium bronzes of W1−xMoxO3 are synthesized for the first time.

Following growth doping strategy and using dopant oxides nanocrystals as dopant sources, we report here two different transition-metal ions doped in a variety of group II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals. Using manganese oxide and copper oxide nanocrystals as corresponding dopant sources, intense photoluminescence emission over a wide range of wavelength has been observed for different host nanocrystals. Interestingly, this single doping strategy is successful in providing such highly emissive nanocrystals considered here, in contrast with the literature reports that would suggest synthesis strategies to be highly specific to the particular dopant, host, or both. We investigate and discuss the possible mechanism of the doping process, supporting the migration of dopant ions from dopant oxide nanocrystals to host nanocrystals as the most likely scenario.

Pyridinium poly(hydrogen fluoride) reacts with the oxide of vanadium(V) and chlorides of chromium(III), iron (III) and Co(II) at room temperature forming the pyridinium salts of hexafluoro vanadate(V), hexafluorochromate(III), hexafluoroferrate(III) and hexafluorocobaltate(II) in near quantitative yields (80%). These pyridinium salts are the precursors for the preparation of the alkali metal hexafluorometallates by metathetic reactions in acetonitrile medium with the corresponding metal chlorides. The prepared salts have been identified by their infrared spectral data and elemental analysis.

The nucleation and growth mechanisms during high temperature oxidation of liquid Al-3% Mg and Al-3% Mg-3% Si alloys were studied with the aim of enhancing our understanding of a new composite fabrication process. The typical oxidation sequence consists of an initial event of rapid but brief oxidation, followed by an incubation period of limited oxide growth after which bulk Al2O3/Al composite forms. A duplex oxide layer, MgO (upper) and MgAl2O4 (lower), forms on the alloy surface during initial oxidation and incubation. The spinel layer remains next to the liquid alloy during bulk oxide growth and is the eventual repository for most of the magnesium in the original alloy. Metal microchannels developed during incubation continuously supply alloy through the composite to the reaction interface. During the growth process, a layered structure exists at the upper extremity of the composite, consisting of MgO at the top surface, MgAl2O4 (probably discontinuous), Al alloy, and finally the bulk Al2O3 composite containing microchannels of the alloy. The bulk oxide growth mechanism appears to involve continuous formation and dissolution of the Mg-rich oxides at the surface, diffusion of oxygen through the underlying liquid metal, and epitaxial growth of Al2O3 on the existing composite body. The roles of Mg and Si in the composite growth process are discussed.

The hydrolysis reactions of organometallic ruthenium(II) piano-stool complexes of the type Ru-II(eta(6)-cymene)(L)Cl](0/+) (1-5, where L = kappa(1)- or kappa(2)-1,1-bis(diphenylphosphino)methane,1,1bis-(diphenylphosphino)methane oxide, kappa(1)-mercaptobenzothiazole) have been studied using density functional theory at the B3LYP level. In addition to considering a syn attack in an associative fashion, where the nucleophile approaches from the same side as the leaving group, we have explored alternative paths such as an anti attack in an associative manner, where the nucleophile attacks from the opposite side of the leaving group. During the anti attack, an intermediate is formed and there is a coordination mode change of the arene ring from eta(6) to eta(2) along with its rotation. When the intermediate goes to the product, the arene ring slips back from eta(2) to eta(6) coordination. This coordinated movement of the arene ring makes the associative anti attack an accessible pathway for the substitution process. Our calculations predict very similar activation barriers for both syn and anti attacks. In the dissociative path, the rate-determining step is the generation of a coordinatively unsaturated 16-electron ruthenium species. This turns out to be viable once solvent effects are included. The large size of the ancillary ligands on Ru makes the dissociative process as favorable as the associative process. Activation energy calculations reveal that although the dissociative path is favorable for kappa(1) complexes, both dissociative and associative processes can have significant contribution to the hydrolysis reaction in kappa(2) complexes. Once activated by hydrolysis, these complexes react with guanine and adenine bases of DNA. The thermodynamic stabilities of complexes formed with the nucleobases are also presented.

Oxide materials like perovskite, zirconolite, hollandite, pyrochlore, NASICON and sphene which are used for nuclear waste immobilization have been prepared by a solution combustion process. The process involves the combustion of stoichiometric amount of corresponding metal nitrates and carbohydrazide/tetraformyl trisazine/diformyl hydrazide at 450 degrees C. The combustion products have been characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and Si-29 MAS-NMR. The fine particle nature of the combustion derived powders has been studied using density, particle size, BET surface area measurements and scanning electron microscopy. Sintering of combustion derived powder yields 85-95% dense ceramics in the temperature range 1000 degrees-1300 degrees C.

Growth and characterization of high-temperature-superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 and several metallic-oxide thin films by pulsed laser deposition is described here. An overview of substrates employed for epitaxial growth of perovskite-related oxides is presented. Ag-doped YBa2Cu3O7 films grown on bare sapphire are shown to give T-c = 90 K, critical current > 10(6) A/cm(2) at 77 K and surface resistance = 450 mu Omega. Application of epitaxial metallic LaNiO3 thin films as an electrode for ferroelectric oxide and as a normal metal layer barrier in the superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction is presented. Observation of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in the metallic La0-6Pb0-4MnO3 thin films up to 50% is highlighted.

We describe three different families of metal oxides, viz., (i) protonated layered perovskites, (ii) framework phosphates of NASICON and KTiOPO4 (KTP) structures and (iii) layered and three-dimensional oxides in the H-V-W-O system, synthesized by 'soft-chemical' routes involving respectively ion-exchange, redox deinteracalation and acid-leaching from appropriate parent oxides. Oxides of the first family, HyA2B3O10(A = La/Ca; B = Ti/Nb), exhibit variable Bronsted acidity and intercalation behaviour that depend on the interlayer structure. V2(PO4)3 prepared by oxidative deintercalation from Na3V2(PO4)3 is a new host material exhibiting reductive insertion of lithium/hydrogen, while K0.5Nb0.5 M0.5OPO4(M = Ti, V) are novel KTP-like materials exhibiting second harmonic generation of 1064 nm radiation. HxVxW1-xO3 for x = 0.125 and 0.33 possessing alpha-MoO3 and hexagonal WO3 structures, prepared by acid-leaching of LiVWO6, represent functionalized oxide materials exhibiting redox and acid-base intercalation reactivity.
