Poly (beta-L-malic acid) (PMLA) is a biodegradable polymer and it has various important applications in the biomedical field. In the present work the structural and spectral characteristics of PMLA have been studied by methods of infrared. Raman spectroscopy and quantum chemistry. Electrostatic potential surface, optimized geometry, harmonic vibrational frequencies, infrared intensities and activities of Raman scattering were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) using oligomeric approach employing B3LYP with complete relaxation in the potential energy surface using 6-311++G (d, p) basis set. Based on results, we have discussed the correlation between the vibrational modes and the structure of the PMLA. A complete analysis of the experimental infrared and Raman spectra has been reported on the basis of wavenumber of the vibrational bands and potential energy distribution. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies shows that charge transfer occur within the molecule. The calculated infrared and the Raman spectra of the polymer based on DFT calculations show reasonable agreement with the experimental results. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we report a synthesis, characterization and electrochemical properties of V2O5 nanobelts. V2O5 nanobelts have been prepared via hydrothermal treatment of commercial V2O5 in acidic (HCl/H2SO4) medium at relatively low temperature (160 degrees C). The hydrothermally derived products have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis spectroscopy, Scanning/Transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM). XRD pattern of V2O5 nanobelts show an orthorhombic phase. From the FTIR spectrum, the peak observed at 1018 cm-1 is characteristic of the stretching vibration mode of the terminal vanadyl, V = O. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of V2O5 nanobelts show maximum absorbance at 430 nm, which was blue-shifted compared to that of bulk V2O5. TEM micrographs reveal that the products consist of nanobelts of 40-200 nm in thickness and several tens of micrometers in length. The electrochemical analysis shows an initial discharge capacity of 360 mAh g-1 and its almost stabilized capacity is reached to 250 mAh g-1 after 55 cycles. A probable reaction mechanism for the formation of orthorhombic V2O5 nanobelts is proposed.

Thin films of Sb20S40Se40 of thickness 800 nm were prepared by thermal evaporation method. The as-prepared and illuminated thin films were studied by X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The optical band gap was reduced due to photo induced effects along with the increase in disorder. These optical properties changes are due to the change of homopolar bond densities. The core level peak shifting in XPS and Raman spectra supports the optical changes happening in the film due to light exposure.

Gd 2O 3 nanoparticles (27-60nm) have been synthesized by the low temperature solution combustion method using citric acid, urea, glycine and oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) as fuels in a short time. The structural and luminescence properties have been carried out using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman, UV-Vis, photoluminescence (PL) and thermoluminescence (TL) techniques. The optical band gap values were estimated for as formed and 800°C calcined samples. The band gap values in as-formed and calcined samples were found to be in the range 4.89-5.59eV. It is observed that, the band gap values are lower for as-formed products and it has been attributed to high degree of structural defects. However, in calcined samples, structure becomes more order with reduced structure defects. Upon 270nm excitation, deep blue UV-band at 390nm along with blue (420-482nm), green (532nm) and red emission (612nm) was observed. The 390nm emission peak may be attributed to recombination of delocalized electron close to the conduction band with a single charged state of surface oxygen vacancy. TL measurements were carried out on Gd 2O 3 prepared by different fuels by irradiating with γ-rays (1kGy). A well resolved glow peak at 230°C was observed for all the samples. It is observed that TL intensity is found to be higher in for urea fuel when compared to others. From TL glow curves the kinetic parameters were estimated using Chen's peak shape method and results are discussed in detail. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

In this work, Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorings/nanorods and Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites have been prepared through a facile hydrothermal route in acidic medium at 200 degrees C for 2 days. The hydrothermally derived products have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical discharge-charge cycling in lithium ion battery. XRD pattern exhibits the layered structure of Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O and the composite shows the presence of RGO at 2 theta = 25.8 degrees. FTIR spectrum shows that the band at 760 cm(-1) could be assigned to a V-OH2 stretching mode due to coordinated water. Raman spectrum shows that the band at 264 cm(-1) is due to the presence of water molecules between the layers. FESEM/TEM micrographs reveal that the products consist of nanorings of inner diameter 5 mu m and thickness of the ring is found to be 200-300 nm. Addition of exfoliated graphene oxide (EGO) destroys the formation of rings. The reduction of EGO sheets into RGO is also evidenced by the red shift of the absorbance peak from 228 nm to 264 nm. In this composite Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorods may adhere to the surface of RGO and/or embedded in the RGO nanosheets. As a result, an effective three-dimensional conducting network was formed by bridging RGO nanosheets, which can facilitate electron transport effectively and thus improve the kinetics and rate performance of Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorings/nanorods. The Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O/RGO composites exhibited a discharge capacity of 340 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 0.1 mA g(-1) and also an improved cyclic stability. RGO plays a `flexible confinement' function to enwrap Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorods, which can compensate for the volume change and prevent the detachment and agglomeration of pulverized Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O, thus extending the cycling life of the electrode. A probable reaction mechanism for the formation of Na0.33V2O5 center dot 1.5H(2)O nanorings is also discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Fine powders of beta-Ga2O3 nanostructures were prepared via low temperature reflux condensation method by varying the pH value without using any surfactant. The pH value of reaction mixture had great influence on the morphology of final products. High crystalline single phase beta-Ga2O3 nanostructures were obtained by thermal treatment at 900 degrees C which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The morphological analysis revealed rod like nanostructures at lower and higher pH values of 6 and 10, while spindle like structures were obtained at pH = 8. The phase purity and presence of vibrational bands were identified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optical absorbance spectrum showed intense absorption features in the UV spectral region. A broad blue emission peak centered at 441 nm due to donor-acceptor gallium-oxygen vacancy pair recombination appeared. The photocatalytic activity toward Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation was higher for nanorods at pH 10.

We present computer simulation study of two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) of water confined in reverse micelles (RMs) of various sizes. The present study is motivated by the need to understand the altered dynamics of confined water by performing layerwise decomposition of water, with an aim to quantify the relative contributions of different layers water molecules to the calculated 2D-IR spectrum. The 0-1 transition spectra clearly show substantial elongation, due to in-homogeneous broadening and incomplete spectral diffusion, along the diagonal in the surface water layer of different sized RMs. Fitting of the frequency fluctuation correlation functions reveal that the motion of the surface water molecules is sub-diffusive and indicate the constrained nature of their dynamics. This is further supported by two peak nature of the angular analogue of van Hove correlation function. With increasing system size, the water molecules become more diffusive in nature and spectral diffusion almost completes in the central layer of the larger size RMs. Comparisons between experiments and simulations establish the correspondence between the spectral decomposition available in experiments with the spatial decomposition available in simulations. Simulations also allow a quantitative exploration of the relative role of water, sodium ions, and sulfonate head groups in vibrational dephasing. Interestingly, the negative cross correlation between force on oxygen and hydrogen of O-H bond in bulk water significantly decreases in the surface layer of each RM. This negative cross correlation gradually increases in the central water pool with increasing RMs size and this is found to be partly responsible for the faster relaxation rate of water in the central pool. Yttrium oxide (Y203) thin films have been deposited by radio frequency plasma assisted metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) process using (2,2,6,6-tetramethy1-3,5-heptanedionate) yttrium (commonly known as Y(thd)3) precursor in a plasma of argon and oxygen gases at a substrate temperature of 350 C. The films have been deposited under influence of varying RF self-bias (-50 V to 175 V) on silicon, quartz, stainless steel and tantalum substrates. The deposited coatings are characterized by glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), spectroscopic ellipsometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). GIXRD and FTIR results indicate deposition of Y2 03 (BCC structure) in all cases. However, XPS results indicate nonstoichiometric cubic phase deposition on the surface of deposited films. The degree of nonstoichiometry varies with bias during deposition. Ellipsometry results indicate that the refractive index for the deposited films is varying from 1.70 to 1.83 that is typical for Y203. All films are transparent in the investigated wavelength range 300-1200 nm. SEM results indicate that the microstructure of the films is changing with applied bias. Results indicate that it is possible to deposit single phase cubic Y203 thin films at low substrate temperature by RF plasma MOCVD process. RF self-bias that decides about the energy of impinging ions on the substrates plays an important role in controlling the texture of deposited Y203 films on the substrates. Results indicate that to control the structure of films and its texture, it is important to control the bias on the substrate during deposition. The films deposited at high bias level show degradation in the crystallinity and reduction of thickness. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Selenium doped thin films of GeTe alloys were investigated for their structural modifications by X-ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman Spectroscopy. The band gap increase from 0.69 to 1.10 eV with increasing Se addition signifies the possibility of band gap tuning in the material. Disorder decreases, band widens and conductivity saturates about 0.20 at.% of Se addition. Structural changes are explained by the bond theory of solids. The as-deposited films are amorphous and 0.50 at.% Se alloy forms a homogeneous amorphous phase with a mixture of Ge-Se and Te-Se bonds. The XPS core level spectra and Raman spectra investigation clearly indicate the formation of Ge-Se, GeTe2 and Te-Se bonds with Se addition. Crystallization temperature is found to be increasing with Se and the 0.10 at.% Se alloy is found to have a higher resistance contrast compared to other Se concentration alloys. Up to 0.10 at.% of Se addition can enhance GeTe phase change memory properties. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We are reporting the fabrication, characterizations and supercapacitance performance of benzimidazole-grafted graphene oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (BI-GO/MWCNTs) composite. The synthesis of BI-GO materials involves cyclization reaction of carboxylic groups on GO among the hydroxyl and amino groups on o-phenylenediamine. The BI-GO/MWCNTs composite has been fabricated via in situ reduction of BI-GO using hydrazine in presence of MWCNTs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) have been used to characterize its surface and elemental composition. The uniform dispersion of MWCNTs with BI-GO helps to improve the charge transfer reaction during electrochemical process. The specific capacitance of BI-GO/MWCNTs composite is 275 and 460 F/g at 200 and 5 mV/s scan rate in 1 mol/L aqueous solution of H2SO4. This BI-GO/MWCNTs composite has shown 224 F/g capacitance after 1300 cycles at 200 mV/s scan rate, which represents its good electrochemical stability. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We show that the hybrids of single-layer graphene oxide with manganese ferrite magnetic nanoparticles have the best adsorption properties for efficient removal of Pb(II), As(III), and As(V) from contaminated water. The nanohybrids prepared by coprecipitation technique were characterized using atomic force and scanning electron microscopies, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and surface area measurements. Magnetic character of the nanohybrids was ascertained by a vibrating sample magnetometer. Batch experiments were carried out to quantify the adsorption kinetics and adsorption capacities of the nanohybrids and compared with the bare nanoparticles of MnFe2O4. The adsorption data from our experiments fit the Langmuir isotherm, yielding the maximum adsorption capacity higher than the reported values so far. Temperature-dependent adsorption studies have been done to estimate the free energy and enthalpy of adsorption. Reusability, ease of magnetic separation, high removal efficiency, high surface area, and fast kinetics make these nanohybrids very attractive candidates for low-cost adsorbents for the effective coremoval of heavy metals from contaminated water.

Composite can deliver more than the individual elemental property of the material. Specifically chalcogenide- multi walled carbon nano tubes and chalcogenide- bilayer graphene composite materials could be interesting for the investigation, which have been less covered by the investigators. We describe micro structural properties of Se55Te25Ge20, Se55Te25Ge20 + 0.025% multi walled carbon nano tubes and Se55Te25Ge20 + 0.025% bilayer graphene materials. This gives realization of the alloying constituents inclusion/or diffusion inside the multi walled carbon nano tubes and bilayer graphene under the homogeneous parent alloy configuration. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV/Visible spectroscopy and Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy have also been carried out under the discussion. A considerable core energy levels peak shifts have been noticed for the composite materials by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The optical energy band gaps are measured to be varied in between 1.2 and 1.3 eV. In comparison to parent (Se55Te25Ge20) alloy a higher infrared transmission has been observed for the composite materials. Subsequently, variation in physical properties has been explained on the basis of bond formation in solids. (C) 2014 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Non-covalent halogen-bonding interactions between n cloud of acetylene (C2H2) and chlorine atom of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) have been investigated using matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy and quantum chemical computations. The structure and the energies of the 1:1 C2H2-CCl4 adducts were computed at the B3LYP, MP2 and M05-2X levels of theory using 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The computations indicated two minima for the 1:1 C2H2-CCl4 adducts; with the C-Cl center dot center dot center dot pi adduct being the global minimum, where pi cloud of C2H2 is the electron donor. The second minimum corresponded to a C-H...Cl adduct, in which C2H2 is the proton donor. The interaction energies for the adducts A and B were found to be nearly identical. Experimentally, both C-Cl center dot center dot center dot pi and C-H center dot center dot center dot Cl adducts were generated in Ar and N2 matrixes and characterized using infrared spectroscopy. This is the first report on halogen bonded adduct, stabilized through C-Cl center dot center dot center dot pi interaction being identified at low temperatures using matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy. Atoms in Molecules (AIM) and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analyses were performed to support the experimental results. The structures of 2:1 ((C2H2)(2)-CCl4) and 1:2 (C2H2-(CCl4)(2)) multimers and their identification in the low temperature matrixes were also discussed. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
