BACKGROUND Liver regeneration is of crucial importance for patients undergoing living liver transplantations or extended liver resections and can be associated with elevated portal venous pressure, impaired hepatic regeneration, and postoperative morbidity. The aim of this study was to assess whether reduction of portal venous pressure by terlipressin improves postoperative liver regeneration in normal and steatotic livers after partial hepatectomy in a rodent model. METHODS Portal venous pressure was assessed after minor (30%), standard (60%), or extended (80%) partial hepatectomy (PH) in mice with and without liver steatosis. Liver regeneration was assessed by BrdU incorporation and Ki-67 immunostaining. RESULTS Portal venous pressure was significantly elevated post-PH in mice with normal and steatotic livers compared to sham-operated mice. Reduction of elevated portal pressure after 80% PH by terlipressin was associated with an increase of hepatocellular proliferation. In steatotic livers, animals treated with terlipressin had an increase in liver regeneration after 30% PH and increased survival after 60% PH. Mechanistically, terlipressin alleviated IL-6 mRNA expression following PH and down-regulated p21 and GADD45 mRNA suggesting a reduction of cell cycle inhibition and cellular stress. CONCLUSIONS Reduction of elevated portal pressure post-PH by the use of terlipressin improves liver regeneration after PH in lean and steatotic mouse livers.

Mineralization of organic matter and the subsequent dissolution of calcite were simulated for surface sediments of the upper continental slope off Gabon by using microsensors to measure O2, pH, pCO2 and Ca2+ (in situ), pore-water concentration profiles of NO3-, NH4+, Fe2+, and Mn2+ and SO42- (ex situ), as well as sulfate reduction rates derived from incubation experiments. The transport and reaction model CoTReM was used to simulate the degradation of organic matter by O2, [NO3]-, Fe(OH)3 and [SO4]2-, reoxidation reactions involving Fe2+ and Mn2+, and precipitation of FeS. Model application revealed an overall rate of organic matter mineralization amounting to 50 µmol C cm**-2 yr**-1, of which 77% were due to O2, 17% to [NO3]- and 3% to Fe(OH)3 and 3% to [SO4]2-. The best fit for the pH profile was achieved by adapting three different dissolution rate constants of calcite ranging between 0.01 and 0.5% d-1 and accounting for different calcite phases in the sediment. A reaction order of 4.5 was assumed in the kinetic rate law. A CaCO3 flux to the sediment was estimated to occur at a rate of 42 g m**-2 yr**-1 in the area of equatorial upwelling. The model predicts a redissolution flux of calcite amounting to 36 g m**-2 yr**-1, thus indicating that ~90% of the calcite flux to the sediment is redissolved.

Oceanographic research in the Amvrakikos Gulf in Western Greece, a semi-enclosed embayment isolated from the Ionian Sea by a narrow, shallow sill, has shown that it is characterised by a fjord-like oceanographic regime. The Gulf is characterised by a well-stratified two layer structure in the water column made up of a surface layer and a bottom layer that are separated by a strong pycnocline. At the entrance over the sill, there is a brackish water outflow in the surface water and a saline water inflow in the near-bed region. This morphology and water circulation pattern makes the Amvrakikos Gulf the only Mediterranean Sea fjord. The investigations have also shown that the surface layer is well oxygenated, whereas in the pycnocline, the dissolved oxygen (DO) declines sharply and finally attains a value of zero, thus dividing the water column into oxic, dysoxic and anoxic environments. At the dysoxic/anoxic interface, at a depth of approximately 35 m, a sharp redox cline develops with Eh values between 0 and 120 mV occurring above and values between 0 and -250 mV occurring below, where oxic and anoxic biochemical processes prevail, respectively. On the seafloor underneath the anoxic waters, a black silt layer and a white mat cover resembling Beggiatoa-like cells are formed. The dysoxic/anoxic conditions appeared during the last 20 to 30 years and have been caused by the excessive use of fertilisers, the increase in animal stocks, intensive fish farming and domestic effluents. The inflicted dysoxia/anoxia has resulted in habitat loss on the seafloor over an area that makes up just over 50% of the total Gulf area and approximately 28% of the total water volume. Furthermore, anoxia is also considered to have been responsible for the sudden fish mortality which occurred in aquaculture rafts in the Gulf in February 2008. Therefore, anoxic conditions can be considered to be a potential hazard to the ecosystem and to the present thriving fishing and mariculture industry in the Gulf.

This study focused on the bacterial diversity associated with microbial mats of deep-sea cold seeps at the Norwegian continental margin. Study sites included the Storegga and Nyegga areas as well as the Håkon Mosby mud volcano, where the mats occurred at temperatures permanently close to the freezing point of seawater. Two visually different mat types, i.e. small gray mats and extensive white mats, were studied with the aim to determine the identity of the mat-forming sulfide oxidizers, and to investigate which environmental factors (e.g. sulfate reduction and methane oxidation rates) shown here could explain the observed diversity. delta11B results and deduced pH, pCO2 and omega values obtained for a tropical coral specimen Porites collected in 1998 at Yasawa (16°48'S- 177°27'E) on the western side of the Fiji archipelago, location in the north western part of the Pacific Warm Pool. Such Porites specimen grew during the XXth century (1898-1998). Boron isotopes results allowed the reconstruction of surface ocean acidification in the vincinity of Fiji Islands with strong interdecadal influence of the ENSO at regional scale. pHT calculation parameters (Hönisch et al., 2007): a=0 PER MIL; alpha=0.9804; delta11B=39.5 PER MIL; salinity=35.02; pKB from Dickson (1990). pCO2 and omega calculation parameters: TA= 2350 µM; Ca= 10.2 mM; Dickson et al.(2007); Mucci 1983.

Las uvas provenientes de zonas cálidas tienen alto contenido azucarino y baja acidez. Los vinos elaborados con estas uvas tienden a evolucionar muy rápidamente durante su conservación. Uno de los factores que condiciona la velocidad de oxidación es el pH. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron comparar la tendencia a la oxidación de tres vinos de diferente pH (3,34; 4,14 y 4,33), elaborados con la variedad Malbec, de un año de conservación, y verificar la factibilidad de utilizar la prueba de oxidación acelerada para diagnosticar riesgo de oxidación en vinos tintos. Los vinos fueron obtenidos en la Bodega Experimental de las Cátedras de Enología I y II de la Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias; las uvas provinieron del este (vino pH 4,14), del norte (vino pH 4,33) y del sur (vino pH 3,34) de la provincia de Mendoza, Argentina. Los ensayos se realizaron con tres repeticiones. La tendencia a la oxidación fue determinada por medio del test de Singleton y Kramling. Las variables medidas fueron: absorbancia a 420 nm, absorbancia a 520 nm e intensidad colorante. Los datos fueron analizados estadísticamente por medio del análisis de la varianza, prueba de Tukey, para un 95% de confianza. En los tres vinos existieron diferencias significativas entre las medianas del incremento de intensidad colorante al quinto día. El vino de pH más elevado sufrió un incremento mayor de la intensidad colorante que los vinos de menor pH, lo que implica un mayor riesgo de oxidación. La tendencia a la oxidación de los vinos tintos puede ser evaluada empleando el test de Singleton y Kramling, incorporando algunas modificaciones: i. e. registrar también la absorbancia a 520 nm y, a partir de estos datos, calcular la intensidad colorante. El tiempo de duración de la prueba debe ser reducido a cuatro días.

Redox conditions and compositions of bottom sediments and sedimentary pore waters in the area of the hydrothermal vent in the Frolikha Bay (Baikal Lake) are under discussion. According to obtained results, the submarine vent and its companion spring nearby on the land originate from a common source. The most convincing evidence for their relation comes from proximity of stable oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions in the pore waters and spring water. The isotope composition indicates meteoric origin of the pore waters, but their major- and minor element compositions have influence of deep water, which may seep through the permeable faulted crust. Although the pore waters near the submarine vent have specific enrichment in major and minor constituents, hydrothermal discharge at the Baikal bottom causes minor influence on water composition of the Baikal Lake, unlike freshwater lakes in rifts of the East Africa and North America.
