Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) was irradiated by Co-60 gamma-rays (doses of 50, 100 and 200kGy) under vacuum. The thermal analysis of control and irradiated PHBV, under vacuum was carried out by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The tensile properties of control and irradiated PHBV were examined by using an Instron tensile testing machine. In the thermal degradation of control and irradiated PHBV, a one-step weight loss was observed. The derivative thermogravimetric curves of control and irradiated PHBV confirmed only one weight-loss step change. The onset degradation temperature (T-o) and the temperature of maximum weight-loss rate (T-p) of control and irradiated PHBV were in line with the heating rate (degreesC min(-1)). T-o and T-p of PHBV decreased with increasing radiation dose at the same heating rate. The DSC results showed that Co-60 gamma-radiation significantly affected the thermal properties of PHBV. With increasing radiation dose, the melting temperature (T-m) of PHBV shifted to a lower value, due to the decrease in crystal size. The tensile strength and fracture strain of the irradiated PHBV decreased, hence indicating an increased brittleness.

Three kinds of hybrid organic/inorganic Langmuir-Blodgett films are obtained by the compact organization of poly (1, 2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethyl)quinoline (abridged as PQ), octadecylamine(abridged as OA) and rare earth-substituted heteropolyanions [abridged as RE(PW11,)(2), RE=Ce-II, Eu-II, Gd-II] using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. They are characterized by the pi-A isotherms, the absorption spectra, the fluorescence spectra and the atomic force microscope. The scanning tunneling microscopy shows that the conductivity of the hybrid LB films is much better after heteropolyanions having been incorporated in the films.

A bilayer CdS/ITO film was obtained. The dipped CdS was grown by an ultrasonic colloid deposition (USCD) method. Microstructure of the CdS film made by USCD has a wider transmission range and a higher transmittance. Amorphous indium-tin-oxide (ITO) thin film was deposited using d.c. magnetron-sputtering at room temperature. The ITO films exhibited good conductivity and maximum transmittance of 94%. The CdS/ITO bilayer was investigated by means of GIXD (grazing incidence X-ray diffraction) at different incidence angles (alpha = 0.20-5.00degrees) and XRD. We discuss a model for the thin bilayer film. SEM and AFM show that homogeneous CdS films with a bar-shaped ultrafine particles and ITO film with nanometer structure. The mechanism of the bilayer CdS/ITO film is discussed.

To simplify the fabrication of multilayer light-emitting diodes, we prepared a p-phenylenevinylene-based polymer capped with crosslinkable styrene through a Wittig reaction. Insoluble poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivative (PPVD) films were prepared by a thermal treatment. The photoluminescence and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorbance of crosslinked films and noncrosslinked films were studied. We also studied the solvent resistance of crosslinked PPV films with UV-vis absorption spectra and atomic force microscopy. Double-layer devices using crosslinked PPVD as an emitting layer, 2-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) in poly(methyl methacrylate) as an electron-transporting layer, and calcium as a cathode were fabricated. A maximum luminance efficiency of 0.70 cd/A and a maximum brightness of 740 cd/m(2) at 16 V were demonstrated. A 12-fold improvement in the luminance efficiency with respect to that of single-layer devices was realized.

A conjugated poly(p-CN-phenylenevinylene) (PCNPV) containing both electron-donating triphenylamine units and electron-withdrawing cyano groups was prepared via Knoevenagel condensation in a good yield. Gel permeation chromatography suggested that the soluble polymer had a very high weight-average molecular weight of 309,000. A bright and saturated red emission was observed under UV excitation in solution and film. Cyclic voltammetry showed that the polymer presented quasi-reversible oxidation with a relatively low potential because of the triphenylamine unit. A single-layer indium tin oxide/PCNPV/Mg-Ag device emitted a bright red light (633 nm).

New series of oxides, La3MMo2O12 (M = In, Ga and Al), have been prepared by the solid-state reaction. The composition and elemental distribution were analyzed by the energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. As determined by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), these compounds have similar crystal structures that can be indexed on a monoclinic cell at room temperature. AC impedance spectra and the DC electrical conductivity measurements in various atmospheres indicate that they are oxide ion conductors with ionic conductivities between 10(-2) and 10(-3) S/cm at 800 degrees C. The conductivity decreases in the order of La3GaMo2O12 > La3AlMo2O12 > La3InMo2O12, implying that the effect of cell volume and polarization associated with In3+, Ga3+ and Al3+ play an important role in the anion transport of these materials. The reversible phase transition was observed in all these compounds as confirmed by the differential thermal analysis (DTA) and dilatometric measurements.

Polymeric electrolytes of (PEO1)(10) LiClO4-Al2O3 (PEO: poly (ethyleneoxide)) and (PEO2)(16)LiClO4-EC (EC: ethylene carbonate) were prepared. We proposed an equivalent circuit and gave the meaning of the concerned circuit elements. When the impedance spectrum deformed severely, the ionic conductivity of polymer electrolyte was determined by using the maximum of imaginary impedance, which is a convenient method.

In this paper, the structures and properties of the neutral and doped blends of poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were investigated. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the structures and morphologies of the blends, and conductivity was also measured. It was found that separate crystallizations occur between P3DDT and LDPE. When the amount of P3DDT is small in the blend, it has the effect of a nucleation reagent and has some influence on the crystal structure. After doping, the interaction force between the molecular chains increases, and leads to a more compact packing and a more uniform dispersion in morphology. Through blending, the thermal stability of pure component could be greatly improved, especially when the P3DDT content is 5 wt %. The conductivity measurements indicate that the conductivity increases with the increase of the P3DDT composition and doping time.

The effects of plasticizer ethylene carbonate (EC) on the AC impedance spectra and the ionic conductivity are reported. With increasing of EC concentration the semicircle in high frequency disappears, and the slope of the straight line in low frequency decreases. The data obtained from impedance experiments can be explained using an equivalent circuit proposed. On the other hand, the room temperature conductivity increases with EC concentration because of the increase of the segmental flexibility of PEO. For lower EC concentration samples, the temperature dependence of conductivity in low temperature range follows Arrhenius type, but when EC concentration is larger than 20%, the temperature dependence of conductivity obeys the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) equation in all temperature ranges.

In this paper, the synthesis and crystallization behavior of poly(ether ether ketone ether ketone) (PEEKEK) are reported. PEEKEK was prepared from 4,4'-bis(p-fluorobenzoyl) diphenyl ether (4,4'-FBDE) and hydroquinone along the nucleophilic substitution route. The thermal properties were investigated by using DSC and TGA. The crystallization behavior of PEEKEK under several conditions, i.e., crystallization from the molten state (melt crystallization), crystallization from a quenched sample (cold crystallization) and crystallization induced by exposing glassy sample to methylene chloride (solvent-induced crystallization) has also been investigated. The results show that crystallization of PEEKEK could be induced by the above methods, and no polymorphism was found. The differences in the crystallization of PEEKEK induced by the above methods are seen in their degree of crystallinity.

Polyaniline (PANI), a member of the intrinsically conducting polymer (ICPs) family, was blended with polyamide-11 (polyco-aminoundecanoyle) in concentrated sulfuric acid. The above solution was used to spin conductive PANI/polyamide-11 fibers by wet-spinning technology. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were employed to study the two-phase morphology of the conductive PANI/polyamide-11 fibers. The micrographs of the cross-section, the axial section and the surface of the monofilament demonstrated that the two blend components were incompatible. The morphology of PANI in the fibers was of fibrillar form, which was valuable for producing conducting channels. The electrical conductivity of the fibers was from 10(-6) to 10(-1) S/cm with the different PANI fraction and the percolation threshold was about 5 wt.%. By comparing the two blend systems of PANI/Polyamide-11 fibers and carbon black filled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers, it was shown that the morphology of the conductive component had an influence on electrical conductivity, The former had higher conductivity and lower percolation threshold than the latter. A series of light-emitting poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s with triphenylamine units as hole-transporting moieties in the main chain were synthesized via Wittig condensation in good yields. The newly formed vinylene double bonds possessed a trans configuration, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The high glass-transition temperature (83-155 degreesC) and high decomposition temperature (> 300 degreesC) suggested that the resulting copolymers possessed high thermal stability. These copolymers, especially TAAPV1, possessed a high weight-average molecular weight (47,144) and a low polydispersity index (1.55). All the copolymers could be dissolved in common organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), CHCl3, CH2Cl2, and toluene, and exhibited intense photoluminesence in THF (the emission maxima were located from 478 to 535 nm) and in film (from 478 to 578 nm). The low onsets of the oxidation potential (0.6-0.75 V) suggested that the alternating copolymers possessed a good hole-transporting property due to the incorporation of triphenylamine moieties. Sodium sulfonate-functionalized polyether ether ketone)s derived from Bisphenol A with a degree of sulfonation up to 2.0 were synthesized by aromatic nucleophilic polycondensation of various amounts of 5,5-carbonylbis(2-fluorobenzenesulfonate) (1), 4,4'-diflurobenzophenone (2) and Bisphenol A (2). Copolymers showed excellent thermal stability and good mechanical properties. The selectivity of water vapor over nitrogen of membranes prepared from copolymers 3a and 3h was determined to be 3.43 x 10(6) and 1.05 x 10(7), respectively.

In this communication we analyse current versus voltage data obtained using one carrier injection at metal/polymer/metal structures, The used polymer is a soluble blue-emitting alternating block copolymer, Our experimental results demonstrate that the electron current is limited by a large amount of traps with exponential energy distribution in the copolymer. The electron ;mobility of 5.1 x 10(-10) cm(2)/V s is directly determined by space-charge-limited current measurements. The electron mobility is at least three orders of magnitude smaller than that for holes in the copolymer. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A tyrosinase-based amperometric biosensor using a self-gelatinizable graft copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) with 4-vinylpyridine (PVA-g-PVP) as an immobilization matrix was constructed. The 4-vinylpyridine component of PVA-g-PVP enhances the adherence to a glassy carbon electrode surface. The content of 4-vinylpyridine in this immobilization matrix plays a key role in retaining the activity of tyrosinase. A simple, milder method was adopted by simply syringing the copolymer-tyrosinase aqueous solution on to the electrode surface and allowing water to evaporate at 4 degrees C in a refrigerator. Several parameters, including copolymer composition; pH, applied potential and enzyme membrane composition, ware optimized. The enzyme membrane composition can be varied to obtain higher sensitivity or a wider linear detection range. The biosensor was used for the determination of phenol, p-cresol and catechol. The biosensor exhibited excellent reproducibility, stability and sensitive response and can be used in flow injection analysis. The biosensor showed an extended linear range in hydrophilic organic solvents and it can be used in monitoring organic reaction processes. The analytical performance demonstrated this immobilization matrix is suitable for the immobilization of tyrosinase.
