Resumo:
The Indian economy characterized variously as a slumbering giant, powerful tiger, and the most promising market has witnessed a slowdown, occasional disturbances in the industrial relations space, and attention of the world in the last five years. In this special issue, we raise pertinent questions and present research on multiple dimensions of the dynamic and rapidly changing business environment of India. The suitability of management models and frameworks developed in the North American contexts in emerging markets like India and China is questioned. One example of how the well-established models in the literature on success of international joint ventures were insufficient to explain the success of three international joint ventures in the insurance space in India is presented as case in point. Finally, the nine papers that materially contribute to the theme of this special issue are introduced. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

La conscience de l’environnement d’affaires est définie comme l’ensemble des savoirs détenus par les employés non-cadres par rapport à l’environnement d’affaires interne et externe de leur organisation. Elle se manifeste lorsque l’employé est impliqué dans la prise de décision ou résolution de problème affectant l’entreprise. Ce travail a comme objectifs la validation d’une échelle de mesure du concept à l’étude, ainsi que la vérification de sa validité de construit et nomologique. L’ensemble initial d’items de l’échelle de mesure a été déterminé suite à des entrevues avec les employés d’organisations participantes (Gauvreau-Jean, 2008). L’ensemble initial de 40 items a été testé avec un échantillon de 508 employés d’une manufacture. Suite à des ajustements, l’échelle modifiée couvre quatre dimensions du construit. L’adéquation de son contenu a ensuite été mise à l’épreuve par deux groupes cibles et deux évaluations expertes (Lessard, 2014). Finalement, dans le cadre de notre étude, la validité du contenu et nomologique de l’échelle modifiée (contenant 24 items) a été testée avec 330 employés de première ligne de quatre entreprises. Les quatre dimensions du construit furent supportées, la fiabilité de l’échelle était haute, puis les hypothèses reliant la conscience de l’environnement avec les caractéristiques au travail, l’évaluation de la performance par un superviseur et l’engagement affectif furent supportées également. Un autre sondage complété par les gestionnaires (n=43) avait comme but une évaluation de la performance contextuelle des employés supervisés. Le développement de l’échelle à 24 items sur la conscience de l’environnement d’affaires pourrait répondre aux questions portant sur la participation de l’employé et l’efficacité organisationnelle.

In recent years the Top Management Team (TMT) in the companies has been extensively studied and discussed by many researchers (Campbell & Mínguez-Vera, 2008; Erhardt et al, 2003; Haleblian & Finkelstein, 1993; Amason & Spienza, 1997). Thus, this theme has undergone a major evolution as well as it has been diversified progressively. Combined with the Upper Echelons Theory, it was established a new dimension of diversity of the Top Management Team that addresses, for example, the diversity of gender and the size of the team. There are several countries that have established laws and regulatory requirements in order to increase the presence of women in the business environment such as Norway, Spain, France, Holland and Italy. However, the female gender is far from equal in terms of representativeness (Torchia et al., 2011), but there are noteworthy developments yearly. It is also noticeable that the size of Top Management Teams has also increased, which can provide advantages for the company (Heleblian & Finkelstein, 1993). In the course of this dissertation it was studied the female gender ratio and the size of the Top Management Team with the profitability (ROA – Return On Assets) of 41 Portuguese companies listed on the Euronext Lisbon between 2011 - 2015. Initially, the Spearman test was applied in order to verify the correlations between the variables in study. It was created a linear regression that relates the number of women (independent variable) and ROA (dependent variable). The Mann-Whitney test was used to verify the ROA behaviour between companies with no women in TMT and companies with women in TMT. After analysis, the results demonstrated that there was a positive relationship between the number of women with ROA. Also companies that have women in TMT have better performance compared to companies with no women in the Top Management Team. As far as the size of the team is concerned, it positively influences the economic profitability, in a meaningful way.

Short time-to-market is a key success factor in the todays’ dynamic business environment and many companies are trying to improve their product development processes. A challenge is to develop products according to the time plan and at the same time keeping the cost low and the quality high. This study focuses on the project management within the product development process in an automotive industry. The background of this study started as a request from the research and development department at the automotive company, which led to the following questions; 1) what are the most crucial factors for project success? 2) How can these factors contribute to a more successful outcome? 3) How can project management decrease product development lead time by sharing knowledge? The research approach is a case study and the data collection consist of interviews and questioners at two companies connected to project management in product development projects. Spider charts are created from the collected data containing eleven dimensions to show similarities and differences between the project managers working within the research and development department as well as between the two companies. The main conclusions are that there is a need to allow a certain level of flexibility when managing projects, in order to more easily handle late changes. Being involved in a project from the concept phase could facilitate the product development activities later on, due to a deeper understanding regarding previous decisions. Further, knowledge sharing methods, such as databases, has to be designed to be suitable for a specific organization and user friendly which enables the users to more easily search for specific types of knowledge. Lastly, a low level on the detailed focus is shown to be another success factor, however, in some cases there is still a need of this detailed focus to solve specific problems but the details may never become a higher focus than the holistic view.

Num contexto empresarial globalizado, a gestão de recursos humanos assume importância crescente. A valorização do capital humano e a preocupação com o compromisso e produtividade das pessoas revelam-se imperativos para a gestão de recursos humanos na contemporaneidade. As políticas e práticas de recursos humanos revelam-se a forma mais eficaz de comprometer as pessoas e, consequentemente, melhorar a performance organizacional. Este trabalho final de mestrado resultou de um estágio realizado num agrupamento complementar de empresa da IBM. Além das actividades desenvolvidas em contexto organizacional, efectuou-se urna descrição de todo o processo de gestão de recursos humanos e analisou-se a relação entre as políticas e práticas de recursos humanos e o compromisso organizacional, nas suas diferentes dimensões. Os resultados deste diagnóstico revelam que os colaboradores apresentam índices elevados de compromisso organizacional para com o ACE. Este compromisso materializa-se no alinhamento dos objectivos de negócio com os objectivos dos colaboradores. A principal causa destes índices elevados de compromisso são as políticas e práticas de recursos humanos. ABSTRACT: ln a globalized business environment, HRM assumes increasing importance. The human capital and concern for the commitment and productivity of people tum out to be imperative for the contemporary human resource management. Policies and practices of human resources prove to be the most effective way to engage people and thus improve organizational performance. This scientific work resulted from one stage held in a complementary group of the IBM Company. Besides the activities in organizations, took place a description of the whole process of resource management and examined the relationship of policies and practices in human resources with organizational commitment, in its various levels. The results of this diagnosis show that employees have high levels of organizational commitment towards the ACE. This commitment is materialized in the alignment of business goals with employee objectives. The main cause of these high levels of commitment are the policies and practices of human resources.

This research work analyzes human behavior in complex situations and explains how decisions makers act in ambiguous situations. The objective of this research work is to study the sunk cost effect and the completion percentage effect of an investment project in a decision-making process. This research work uses a “retrospective rationality” approach to justify irrational behaviors such as the sunk cost effect, the completion percentage effect of an investment project and the irrational escalation since decision-makers are repeatedly affected by the decisions on past irreversible investments. This research work evaluates three sunk cost levels, and three completion percentage levels of an investment project, besides three neutral situations in a business environment and a personal decision situation. Graduate students in three Portuguese Management Schools responded to the questionnaires. Model results show that the value of resources invested is crucial for understanding the students’ rational behavior, who participated in this research work. These results disclose statistical evidence that the information on sunk costs and completion percentage of an investment project determines human behavior under irrational escalation in ambiguous situations. As a consequence, decision makers have the opportunity to interpret their decisions, since the scenarios do not allow a unique definition of rational choice, it is not correct to judge the irrational decision makers that decide to continue to invest in ambiguous situations. Engineering of negotiation model allows to develop effective heuristic for business intelligence. Digital ecosystems demand open negotiation models. To define in advance effective heuristics is not compliant with the requirement of openness. The new challenge is to develop business intelligence in advance exploiting an adaptive approach. The idea is to learn business strategy once new negotiation model rise in the e-market arena. In this paper we present how recommendation technology may be deployed in an open negotiation environment where the interaction protocol models are not known in advance. The solution we propose is delivered as part of the ONE Platform, open source software that implements a fully distributed open environment for business negotiation

The thesis studies role based access control and its suitability in the enterprise environment. The aim is to research how extensively role based access control can be implemented in the case organization and how it support organization’s business and IT functions. This study points out the enterprise’s needs for access control, factors of access control in the enterprise environment and requirements for implementation and the benefits and challenges it brings along. To find the scope how extensively role based access control can be implemented into the case organization, firstly is examined the actual state of access control. Secondly is defined a rudimentary desired state (how things should be) and thirdly completed it by using the results of the implementation of role based access control application. The study results the role model for case organization unit, and the building blocks and the framework for the organization wide implementation. Ultimate value for organization is delivered by facilitating the normal operations of the organization whilst protecting its information assets.

Purpose – This study aims to examine the moderating effects of external environment and organisational structure in the relationship between business-level strategy and organisational performance. Design/methodology/approach – The focus of the study is on manufacturing firms in the UK belonging to the electrical and mechanical engineering sectors, and respondents were CEOs. Both objective and subjective measures were used to assess performance. Non-response bias was assessed statistically and appropriate measures taken to minimise the impact of common method variance (CMV). Findings – The results indicate that environmental dynamism and hostility act as moderators in the relationship between business-level strategy and relative competitive performance. In low-hostility environments a cost-leadership strategy and in high-hostility environments a differentiation strategy lead to better performance compared with competitors. In highly dynamic environments a cost-leadership strategy and in low dynamism environments a differentiation strategy are more helpful in improving financial performance. Organisational structure moderates the relationship of both the strategic types with ROS. However, in the case of ROA, the moderating effect of structure was found only in its relationship with cost-leadership strategy. A mechanistic structure is helpful in improving the financial performance of organisations adopting either a cost-leadership or a differentiation strategy. Originality/value – Unlike many other empirical studies, the study makes an important contribution to the literature by examining the moderating effects of both environment and structure on the relationship between business-level strategy and performance in a detailed manner, using moderated regression analysis.

Digital TV offers of 200 channels and 500 video-on-demand films, podcasting, mobile television, a new web blog being created every two seconds - these are some of the factual elements depicting contemporary audiovisual media in the digital environment. The present article looks into some of these technological advances and sketches their implications for the markets of media content, in particular as newly emerging patterns of consumer and business behaviour are concerned. Ultimately, it puts forward the question of whether the existing audiovisual media regulatory models, which are still predominantly analogue-based, have been rendered obsolete by the transformed (and continually transforming) digital environment.
