The SESAME dataset contains mesozooplankton data collected during September 2008 in the North-West Black Sea (between 44°46' N and 42°29'N latitude and 28°64'E and 30°59'E longitude). Mesozooplankton sampling was undertaken at 9 stations where samples were collected using a Juday net in the 0-10, 10-25, 25-50, 50-100, 100-150, 150-200 m layer. The dataset includes 30 samples analysed for mesozooplankton species composition, species abundance and total biomass. Sampling volume was estimated by multiplying the mouth area with the wire length. The Taxon-specific mesozooplankton abundance sample or aliquots were analyzed under the binocular microscope. Taxonomic identification was done according to Morduhai-Boltovskii et al. 1968. Total biomass was estimated using a tabel with wet weight for each species an stage (Petipa method).

It is shown that in 2002-2005 mass development of coccolithofore Emiliania huxleyi on the Gelendzhik shelf (northeast Black Sea) occurred annually and in May-June its abundance reached 1500000 cells/l. In 2004-2005 bloom of E. huxleyi was accompanied by mass development of diatom alga Chaetoceros subtilis var. abnormis f. simplex (600000-900000 cells/l). For the first time it was registered as a dominating form of Black Sea phytoplankton. Small flagellates and picoplankton algae played a noticeable role in phytoplankton throughout the entire period of the studies. Meanwhile in the early summer period the bulk of biomass consisted of coccolithophores (50-60%), while in the late summer period diatomaceous algae dominated (50-70%). Among ecological factors that favor coccolithophore development one may note microstratification of the upper mixed layer at a high illumination level and high temperature in surface waters (18-21°C). Terrigenous runoff during the rainy period had a negative effect on E. huxleyi development, while storms dispersed the population over the upper mixed layer. A wind-induced near-shore upwelling stimulated development of diatoms.

Structure of mesoplankton and distribution of dissolved ammonia in the vicinity of an isolated seamount of the Louisville Ridge in the subantarctic zone of the Pacific Ocean was studied using data obtained in January 1985 in an area 20 x 30 nm. There were areas with both high (20-25 to 139 g/m**2 in the 0-200 m layer) and low biomass values (<10 g/m**2) of mesoplankton. In the areas with high biomass, a single species Calanus tonsus was strongly dominant (>80% of biomass); its population was relatively mature in seasonal terms, with relatively high percentage of individuals containing fat inclusions. Stations with high mesoplankton biomass also had relatively high concentrations of dissolved ammonia. Presence of plankton-rich areas corre¬lated with presence of a quasi-steady-state topographic eddy. Lifetimes of these nonuniformities in the structure of mesoplankton are estimated as 10-30 days.

The under-ice habitat and fauna were studied during a typical winter situation at three stations in the western Barents Sea. Dense pack ice (7-10/10) prevailed and ice thickness ranged over <0.1-1.6 m covered by <0.1-0.6 m of snow. Air temperatures ranged between -1.8 and -27.5°C. The ice undersides were level, white and smooth. Temperature and salinity profiles in the under-ice water (0-5 m depth) were not stratified (T=-1.9 to -2.0°C and S=34.2-34.7). Concentrations of inorganic nutrients were high and concentrations of algal pigments were very low (0.02 µg chlorophyll a/l), indicating the state of biological winter. Contents of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen ranged over 84.2-241.3 and 5.3-16.4 µg/l, respectively, the C/N ratio over 11.2-15.5 pointing to the dominance of detritus in the under-ice water. Abundances of amphipods at the ice underside were lower than in other seasons: 0-1.8 ind/m**2 for Apherusa glacialis, 0-0.7 ind/m**2 for Onisimus spp., and 0-0.8 ind/m**2 for Gammarus wilkitzkii. A total of 22 metazoan taxa were found in the under-ice water, with copepods as the most diverse and numerous group. Total abundances ranged over 181-2,487 ind/m**3 (biomass: 70-2,439 µg C/m**3), showing lower values than in spring, summer and autumn. The dominant species was the calanoid copepod Pseudocalanus minutus (34-1,485 ind/m**3), contributing 19-65% to total abundances, followed by copepod nauplii (85-548 ind/m**3) and the cyclopoid copepod Oithona similis (44-262 ind/m**3). Sympagic (ice-associated) organisms occurred only rarely in the under-ice water layer.

Vertical zooplankton distribution at the northeastern periphery of the North Atlantic subtropical gyre was studied with the use of 113/140 BR nets and Mir manned submersibles. Vertical distribution of selected dominant taxonomic, ecological, and trophic groups was considered. Results were compared with data obtained at the same location in 2001 that allowed to estimate interannual variability of the planktonic community.

Aerosol samples collected over the North Atlantic from ship were analysed for Sodium, Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium and Chloride. A found dependence of sea salt concentrations from wind velocity is compared with earlier results. The mean of the ratio Cl/Na was close to that for sea water; the Mg-, K- and Ca-concentrations in the aerosol, however, were enriched with respect to sea water. It is shown that continental advection influences the measured aerosol components over the North Atlantic.

The Longitudinale 1987-1991dataset contains zooplankton data collected from May to October 1987-1991 in 14 station allong 2 transect paralel to the romanian littoral. Zooplankton sampling was undertaken at 14 stations where samples were collected using a Juday closing net in the 0-10, 10-20, 20-30 and 30-40 layer (depending also on the water masses). The dataset includes samples analysed for mesozooplankton species composition and abundance. Sampling volume was estimated by multiplying the mouth area with the wire length. Taxon-specific mesozooplankton abundance was count under microscope. Total abundance is the sum of the counted individuals. Total biomass Fodder, Rotifera , Ctenophora and Noctiluca was estimated using a tabel with wet weight for each species an stage.
