Growth and production of free-living heterotrophic nanoflagellates in a eutrophic lake - Lake Donghu, Wuhan, China

In situ growth of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in Lake Donghu, a eutrophic shallow lake in mainland China, was studied from January 1999 to March 2000 using a modified Weisse protocol. The study results indicated that the growth rates of HNF showed pronounced seasonal variation (-0.37-1.25 d(-1)), reaching the maximum during spring to early summer. When the water temperature was higher than 25.5 degreesC, HNF growth was inversely proportional to water temperature. There was an effect by bacterial abundance and autotrophic picoplankton on HNF growth that depended on location. HNF biomass was the highest in late spring, and the HNF production ranged from -2.25 to 35.45 mg l(-1) d(-1) with mean of 3.17 mg l(-1) d(-1). When considered in the context of biomass and production data for zooplankton in Lake Donghu, it was evident that HNF contributed significantly to the total zooplankton production in Lake Donghu. These in situ studies indicate that temperature and food supply are the major determinants of HNF abundance and productivity.

Anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities of polysaccharide from Chlorella stigmatophora and Phaeodactylum tricornutum

Crude polysaccharide extracts were obtained from aqueous extracts of the microalgae Chlorella stigmatophora and Phaeodactylum tricornutum. The crude extracts were fractionated by ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose columns. The molecular weights of the polysaccharides in each fraction were estimated by gel filtration on Sephacryl columns. The crude polysaccharide extracts of both microalgae showed anti-inflammatory activity in the carrageenan-induced paw edema test. In assays of effects on the delayed hyper-sensitivity response, and on phagocytic activity assayed in vivo and in vitro, the C. stigmatophora extract showed immunosuppressant effects, while the P. tricornutum extract showed immunostimulatory effects. Organolanthanides with 3-(2-pyridylmethyl) indenyl ligands: synthesis, crystal structures and catalytic activities of divalent complexes for epsilon-caprolactone polymerization

Reaction of 3-(2-pyridylmethyl)indenyl lithium (1) with LnI(2)(THF)(2) (Ln = Sm, Yb) in THF produced the divalent organolanthanides (C5H4NCH2C9H6)(2)Ln(II)(THF) (Ln = Sm (2), Yb (3)) in high yield. 1 reacts with LnCl(3) (Ln = Nd, Sm, Yb) in THF to give bis(3-(2-pyridylmethyl)indenyl) lanthanide chlorides (C5H4NCH2C9H6)(2)Ln(III)Cl (Ln = Nd (4), Sm (5)) and the unexpected divalent lanthanides 3 (Ln = Yb). Complexes 2-5 show more stable in air than the non-functionalized analogues. X-ray structural analyses of 2-4 were performed. 2 and 3 belong to the high symmetrical space group (Cmcm) with the same structures, they are THF-solvated 9-coordinate monomeric in the solid state, while 4 is an unsolvated 9-coordinate monomer with a trans arrangement of both the side-arms and indenyl rings in the solid state. Additionally, 2 and 3 show moderate polymerization activities for F-caprolactone (CL).

Extended topological indices and prediction of activities of chiral compounds

The activities/properties of two molecules with identical formula but different configuration states of the asymmetric atoms are different. Thus, usually the common topological indices are not suitable. In this study, the chiral topological indices were obtained by extending A(mi) indices suggested by our laboratory and molecular connectivity indices. The modified topologial indices have been used for the studies on D2 for dopamine receptor and a receptor activities of fourteen N-alkylated 3-(3-hydroxypyenyl)-piperidines. It has been observed that selected variables possess low correlations. The results obtained by using multiple regression analysis and artificial neural networks are satisfactory.

A QSAR study of the antiallergic activities of substituted benzamides and their structures

Multiple regression analysis (MRA) and comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) have been used in studies of the correlation between the antiallergic activities of substituted benzamides and their structures. The results achieved using Coh IFA based on 3D factors are much better than those obtained using MRA based on mainly 2D structural information. The CoMFA results reveal that the steric effects are more important than the electrostatic effects for the activities of substituted benzamides. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Influence of intraperitoneal injection of rare earth compounds on the activities of antioxidant enzymes and the level of lipid peroxidation in mice livers

Following intraperitoneal injection of lanthanum and terbium chloride and their complexes of diethyltriaminopentagacetic acid (DTPA) to adult mice with a dose of 0.28 mmol/kg body weight/day for three days. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and the content of lipid end product, malonaldehyde (MDA) in the mice livers have been assayed respectively. The results show that the activity of SOD was increased and the content of MDA was reduced for LaCl3 treated mice and the two targets were not changed for TbCl3, but the activity of GSH-Px was reduced markedly for both LaCl3 and TbCl3 while the above three targets were not changed for La-DTPA and Tb-DTPA complexes.

Synthesis, structures and antitumor activities of beta-phenolester propyl germanium sesquioxides

Eight new compounds of (GeCH2CH (CH3) COOAr)(2)O-3 type were synthesized. Four of them were tested for antitumor activities against Hela cells in vitro, showing considerable tumor inhibitory activities.
