C19H26O4, M(r) = 318.41, orthorhombic, P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 10.591 (1), b = 11.133 (1), c = 13.657 (2) angstrom, V = 1610.29 angstrom 3, Z = 4, D(m) (flotation in KI) = 1.301, D(x) = 1.313 g cm-3, Mo K-alpha, lambda = 0.7107 angstrom, mu = 0.85 cm-1, F(000) = 688, T = 293 K, R = 0.057 for 1253 significant reflections. The A ring is disordered with atoms C(2) and O(19) occupying two possible sites. The molecules are held together by a hydrogen bond [O(9)...O(17) = 2.89 angstrom].

C18H17NO3, M r = 295"34, monoclinic, C2/c, a = 11.689 (2), b = 22.934 (4), c = 11.592 (2) A, fl=100.16(3) ° , V =3058.8(8) A 3, Z=8, D,n= 1.30 (5), Dx = 1.28 Mg m -3, A(Mo Ka) = 0.7107 A, tz(Mo Ka) = 0.094 mm- 1, F(000) = 1248, T = 300 K, final R = 0.046 for 1849 observed reflections [I > 30"(/)]. The indole nucleus is slightly bent along the C(8)---C(9) bond. The phenyl ring connected to the indole moiety is rotated about the C(3)---C(10) bond by 45.8 (3) °. The carboxyl group makes a dihedral angle of 8.1 (4) ° with the mean plane of the indole moiety. Centrosymmetrically related pairs of molecules are linked through hydrogen bonds across the centre of symmetry and form dimers.

C17H17N3O2, M(r) = 295.34, orthorhombic, P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 7.659 (1), b = 12.741 (1), c = 15.095 (1) angstrom, V = 1473.19 (2) angstrom 3, Z = 4, D(m) = 1.33, D(x) = 1.32 Mg m-3, lambda(Cu K-alpha) = 1.5418 angstrom, mu = 0.68 mm-1, F(000) = 624, T = 295 K, R = 0.031 for 1549 unique observed reflections with I > 2.5-sigma(I). The seven-membered heterocyclic ring adopts a boat conformation flattened at the nitroso end of the ring. The substituent phenyl rings occupy pseudo-axial positions and the nitroso group is coplanar with the C(2), N(1), C(7) plane of the central ring. The crystal structure is stabilized by intermolecular N-H...O and weak C-H...O hydrogen bonds.

We consider a one-dimensional mesoscopic Hubbard ring with and without disorder and compute charge and spin stiffness as a measure of the permanent currents. For finite disorder we identify critical disorder strength beyond which the charge currents in a system with repulsive interactions are larger than those for a free system. The spin currents in the disordered repulsive Hubbard model are enhanced only for small U, where the magnetic state of the system corresponds to a charge-density wave pinned to the impurities. For large U, the state of the system corresponds to localized isolated spins and the spin currents are found to be suppressed. For the attractive Hubbard model we find that the charge currents are always suppressed compared to the free system at all length scales.

A new strategy for the construction of A-ring aromatic steroids which resulted in the formal total synthesis of estrone is described. Thus reaction of the adduct (9), obtained from 1-methoxy-4-methylcyclohexa-1,4-diene and acrolein, with 3-(m-methoxyphenyl)propylmagnesium bromide followed by oxidation afforded the bicyclo[2.2.2]octene derivative (14). Acid-catalysed rearrangement of (14) followed by an intramolecular Michael addition resulted in the cis tetraenone (18) which was dehydrogenated with palladium chloride to the pentaenone (22). Li/NH3 reduction of (22) gave 3-methoxy-D-homoestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-16-one (31) which has been converted into the methyl ether (37) of marrianolic acid, and its methyl ester (38).

Herein we present a simple and highly efficient method for the synthesis of beta and gamma-amino thiols via regioselective ring opening of sulfamidates with tetrathiomolybdate 1. The generality of this methodology has been shown by synthesizing carbohydrate derived beta-amino thiol. The scope and versatility of this methodology has been demonstrated by synthesizing biologically important unnatural amino acids like isocysteines in optically pure form. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. We consider a one-dimensional Hubbard model in the presence of disorder. We compute the charge stiffness for a mesoscopic ring as a function of the size L, which is a measure of the persistent currents. We find that for finite disorder the persistent currents of the system with repulsive interactions are larger than those of the system with attractive interactions. This counterintuitive result is due to the fact that local-density fluctuations are reduced in the presence of repulsive interactions.

In recent years, parallel computers have been attracting attention for simulating artificial neural networks (ANN). This is due to the inherent parallelism in ANN. This work is aimed at studying ways of parallelizing adaptive resonance theory (ART), a popular neural network algorithm. The core computations of ART are separated and different strategies of parallelizing ART are discussed. We present mapping strategies for ART 2-A neural network onto ring and mesh architectures. The required parallel architecture is simulated using a parallel architectural simulator, PROTEUS and parallel programs are written using a superset of C for the algorithms presented. A simulation-based scalability study of the algorithm-architecture match is carried out. The various overheads are identified in order to suggest ways of improving the performance. The lambda(3)-cyclotriphosphazanes, [EtNP(OR)](3) [R = 2,6-Me2C6H3 (1), 4-BrC6H4 (2), or CH2CF3(3)], on treatment with tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone (TCB) give the lambda(5)-cyclodiphosphazanes, [EtNP(O2C6Cl4)(OR)][EtNP(O2C6Cl4){N(Et)P(OR)(2)}] (5-7) by an unusual ring contraction-rearrangement. The reaction of the mixed substituent lambda(3)-cyclotriphosphazane, [(EtN)(3)P-3(OR)(2)(OR')] [R = 2,6-Me2C6H3, R' = 4-BrC6H4] (4), with TCB gives the lambda(5)-cyclodiphosphazane, [EtNP(O2C6Cl4)(OR')][EtNP(O2C6Cl4){N(Et)P(OR)(2)}] (8), in which 4-bromophenoxide resides on one of the ring phosphorus atoms. The lambda(3)-bicyclic tetraphosphapentazane, (EtN)(5)P-4(OPh)(2), on treatment with TCB undergoes a double ring contraction-rearrangement to give the lambda(5)-cyclodiphosphazane, (EtN)[(EtN)(2)P-2(O2C6Cl4)(2)(OPh)](2) (9). Variable-temperature and high-field P-31 NMR studies indicate the presence of more than one isomer in solution for the rearranged products 5-9. The solid state structure of 8 reveals a trans arrangement of the substituents with respect to the P2N2 ring in contrast to the gauche arrangement observed for 5.

A methodology based on Claisen rearrangement-Wacker oxidation and intramolecular aldol condensation strategy starting from cyclic ketones leading to spiro[4.n](n+5)alk-2-en-1-ones has been developed. Thus one-pot Claisen rearrangement of the alkyl alcohols 6a-c furnished the aldehydes 8a-c, which on regiospecific oxidation using Wacker conditions generated the keto-aldehydes 9a-c. Finally, intramolecular aldol condensation transformed the keto-aldehydes 9a-c into spiroannulated products 10a-c.

The optimisation is reported on the design of unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering cathodes. For the study, a planar circular cathode backed by a double-coil electromagnet (compatible for a 100 mm diameter target) was developed. The variation of the structure and strength of the magnetic field in front of the target was investigated for different current combinations in the electromagnetic coils, and its effect on the sputtering process was analysed. The observations on the magnetic field geometry revealed some interesting features, such as the balancing point of the fields along the axis (null-point), and the zero axial region over the target surface (B-z = 0 ring). The positions of both could be controlled by adjusting the ratio of the electric current in the coils. The magnetic field null-point could be used as a reference for the region of homogeneous film growth. The B-z = 0 ring was the location where the glow discharge concentrated (or where the maximum target erosion occurred). The diameter of the ring determined the area covered by the discharge and thus the sputtering efficiency. The optimum substrate position can be fixed according to the position of the null-point and optimisation of sputtering can be achieved by adjusting the diameter of the B-z = 0 ring. The results of this study should be helpful in the designing of an ideal UBM using permanent magnets as well as electromagnets. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A series of novel dispiroheterocyclic systems have been synthesized by the cycloaddition of a new azomethine ylide generated by the decarboxylative route from tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid and isatin with various dipolarophiles containing exocyclic double bond such as 3-arylidene-4-chromanone, 3-arylidene-4-flavanone and 2-arylidenetetrahydro-1-naphthalenone in moderate to good yield. The regio and stereochemistry of the title compounds was established by single crystal X-ray structure and spectroscopic techniques. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

An efficient methodology for the synthesis of the aromatic sesquiterpenes (+/-)-herbertene, (+/-)-alpha-herbertenol, (+/-)-beta-herbertenol (+/-)-herbertenediol and (+/-)-alpha-cuparenone, employing a combination of Claisen rearrangement and ring closing metathesis reactions, is described.
