Towards reusability and tailorability in collaborative learning systems using IMS-LD and grid services

CSCL applications are complex distributed systems that posespecial requirements towards achieving success in educationalsettings. Flexible and efficient design of collaborative activitiesby educators is a key precondition in order to provide CSCL tailorable systems, capable of adapting to the needs of eachparticular learning environment. Furthermore, some parts ofthose CSCL systems should be reused as often as possible inorder to reduce development costs. In addition, it may be necessary to employ special hardware devices, computational resources that reside in other organizations, or even exceed thepossibilities of one specific organization. Therefore, theproposal of this paper is twofold: collecting collaborativelearning designs (scripting) provided by educators, based onwell-known best practices (collaborative learning flow patterns) in a standard way (IMS-LD) in order to guide the tailoring of CSCL systems by selecting and integrating reusable CSCL software units; and, implementing those units in the form of grid services offered by third party providers. More specifically, this paper outlines a grid-based CSCL system having these features and illustrates its potential scope and applicability by means of a sample collaborative learning scenario.

Free-and open source software for a course on network management: authoring and enactment of scripts based on collaborative learning strategies

This paper describes a Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) case study in engineering education carried out within the context of a network management course. The case study shows that the use of two computing tools developed by the authors and based on Free- and Open-Source Software (FOSS) provide significant educational benefits over traditional engineering pedagogical approaches in terms of both concepts and engineering competencies acquisition. First, the Collage authoring tool guides and supports the course teacher in the process of authoring computer-interpretable representations (using the IMS Learning Design standard notation) of effective collaborative pedagogical designs. Besides, the Gridcole system supports the enactment of that design by guiding the students throughout the prescribed sequence of learning activities. The paper introduces the goals and context of the case study, elaborates onhow Collage and Gridcole were employed, describes the applied evaluation methodology, anddiscusses the most significant findings derived from the case study.

Reusing IMS-LD formalized best practices in collaborative learning structuring

Designs of CSCL (Computer Supported Collaborative Learning)activities should be flexible, effective and customizable toparticular learning situations. On the other hand, structureddesigns aim to create favourable conditions for learning. Thus,this paper proposes the collection of representative and broadlyaccepted (best practices) structuring techniques in collaborative learning. With the aim of establishing a conceptual common ground among collaborative learning practitioners and softwaredevelopers, and reusing the expertise that best practicesrepresent, the paper also proposes the formulation of these techniques as patterns: the so-called CLFPs (CollaborativeLearning Flow Patterns). To formalize these patterns, we havechosen the educational modelling language IMS Learning Design (IMS-LD). IMS-LD has the capability to specify many of the collaborative characteristics of the CLFPs. Nevertheless, the language bears limited capability for describing the services that mediate interactions within a learning activity and the specification of temporal or rotated roles. This analysis isdiscussed in the paper, as well as our approaches towards thedevelopment of a system capable of integrating tools using IMSLDscripts and a CLFP-based Learning Design authoring tool.

Los mundos posibles del discurso de Berlusconi. Un análisis de la evolución del contenido a través de cuatro discursos del líder del centro-derecha italiano

El siguiente trabajo es un estudio sobre las dinámicas y los contenidos de la comunicación política de Silvio Berlusconi y su partido, analizada mediante una perspectiva histórica y sociológica y mediante el análisis de cuatro discursospronunciados por Berlusconi a lo largo de 15 años.Para el análisis del discurso se utiliza la metodología elaborada por Jordi Pericot yArantxa Capdevila a partir de la “Teoría de la Argumentación” de Chaïm Perelman y dela teoría de los mundos posibles.

Pompetis : guarderia a la UPF

Presses, embussos, preocupacions... Aquest és el dia a dia de molts pares que han de compaginar treball i vida familiar, sobretot quan els seus fills són infants.Perquè, qui no es preocupa per seleccionar la guarderia que millor s’adequa a les sevesnecessitats? Qui no ha arribat tard, o ha sortit abans de la feina per anar a buscar els seus fills? Crida l’atenció el fet que els alumnes arribin tard a classe per aprofitar el màxim les hores de son després d’una llarga nit de festa, però, per què arriben tard els professors? La resposta és que molts d’ells estan portant el seu fill a la guarderia.Aquests és el tipus de problemes que ens han motivat a realitzar aquest treball.En el present treball, volem analitzar la possibilitat d’establir una guarderia a laUPF. Primer, volem conèixer si hi ha demanda de mercat d’aquest servei per part delpersonal docent i administratiu. En segon lloc, volem realitzar una investigació demercat per tal d’establir quines haurien de ser les característiques específiques de laguarderia a la UPF: Pompetits. Per tant, intentarem donar resposta a dues hipòtesis: Hi ha demanda de mercat d’una guarderia a la UPF?, ¿Quines són les característiquesespecífiques que hauria de tenir la guarderia a la UPF?Hem resolt la primera hipòtesi a partir d’un antecedent històric que es va donar ala Universitat. Per donar resposta a la segona, hem realitzat una investigació de mercat.Durant l’estudi qualitatiu que requereix aquesta investigació, hem organitzat una sessió de grup pel professorat i entrevistes en profunditat pel personal administratiu.Seguidament, mitjançant l’enquesta de l’estudi quantitatiu, hem elaborat un perfil de potencial consumidor. Prestant especial atenció a les preferències d’aquest consumidor, hem caracteritzat la guarderia de la UPF.Un cop realitzada tota la investigació, podem concloure que sí hi ha demanda demercat. Pel que fa a les característiques, la Pompetits oferiria un servei d’acollida amb un horari flexible, de 8 a 18h., destinat a nens de 0 a 3 anys. Es realitzarien activitats talscom la psicomotricitat, jocs al pati, música, piscina i trencaclosques. També es farien sortides a la granja, al zoològic, al Parc de la Ciutadella, i a teatres i concerts infantils.La guarderia hauria de tenir un pati gran i sol-obert, menjador, cuina pròpia, ludoteca ijardí; a més, disposaria de pedagogs i logopedes.

Evaluación funcional en ancianos intervenidos de fractura de cadera

Estudio observacional prospectivo en pacientes mayores de 65 años intervenidos de fractura de cadera. El objetivo fue conocer la evolución funcional de los pacientes a los tres meses del alta hospitalaria, identificar variables relacionadas con dicha recuperación funcional, describir la mortalidad e institucionalización asociadas al proceso. Se analizaron variables demográficas como edad, sexo, convivencia. Otros aspectos registrados fueron: comorbilidad, deterioro cognitivo, capacidad para caminar, nivel de dependencia según índice de Barthel, institucionalización y mortalidad. Se recogió la información al ingreso y a los 3 meses del alta. El 89,6% de la muestra, fueron mujeres, la edad media fue de 83,56 años. El 40% de los pacientes recuperaron la independencia previa registrándose una mortalidad del 16,7% así como una leve progresión hacia la institucionalización. La capacidad funcional y el deterioro cognitivo del paciente, previos a la fractura condicionan su recuperación funcional y dependencias posteriores.

The street and children’s informal economy in Cape Verde

Since the 1990s Cape Verde has undergone dramatic economic and political transformations that have brought about growing social class distinction. The two main towns (Praia and Mindelo) have grown rapidly in the last decades and their urban structure today reflects the increasing polarisation of the population. Middle and upper class families occupy the older parts of town and the recently built planned areas, while spontaneous neighbourhoods spread without planning on the less valuable land. It is in these latter areas that most social issues associated with childhood and youth have become highly visible in the last decade. In this article I will focus on children’s reasons for going to live on the streets of Mindelo, arguing that it is in terms of autonomous mobility within a non-heterogeneous and profoundly divided urban and social space that we can better understand what is commonly defined as the phenomenon of street children.

‘A tiger that wants to become a lion’: Violent forms of agency among youth in Cape Verde

Cape Verdean prison population raised 100% in the last ten years: in this paper I offer an interpretation of this disturbing figure, addressing the issue of young offenders and children in conflict with the law, the perception of youth crime in Cape Verde, and how the government has recently dealt with these issues. Cape Verde currently deploys a repressive approach to the issue of youth crime: in this draconian context, I will follow the application of policies and laws targeting juvenile delinquents as well as the public and media discourse on the issue. At the same time, through interviews with younger inmates in prisons and institutions, I will relocate young offenders’ behavior and activity within their wider social context, providing urgently needed data on the cultural and social dimensions of juvenile offending and violence.

El papel de Canarias en las relaciones económicas internacionales con África

En esta comunicación pretendemos realizar un análisis a largo plazo de las relaciones económicas entre Canarias y África, en concreto durante la etapa capitalista. Para ello, no sólo nos centraremos en los intercambios comerciales entre ambos territorios, sino también analizaremos otros ámbitos, como el papel desarrollado por las Islas como plataforma logística internacional para los agentes económicos de otros países que realizaban transacciones económicas con África, o las inversiones realizadas por la clase empresarial isleña en los países africanos.

Uso de las herramientas 2.0 en el periodismo deportivo digital en Cataluña

El ciberperiodismo ha evolucionado, desde una etapa facsimilar, hasta su estado actual en el que aprovecha mejor los recursos de Internet y se diferencia del periodismo en soporte físico. El surgimiento de la Web 2.0 supone para los medios digitales y los estudiosos de la comunicación un aprendizaje y adaptación constantes. El acelerado cambio que ha caracterizado a estas nuevas tecnologías de la información ha causado que los cibermedios comenzaran a utilizarlas sin establecer estrategias ni objetivos previos; en su lugar, los han ido desarrollando y mejorando sobre la base de la experiencia, para así explotar al máximo el potencial que ofrecen. El presente estudio comprende una investigación descriptiva de tipo empírico y de carácter cuantitativo sobre el uso de estas plataformas que ejercen los medios deportivos on-line editados en Cataluña.

A Gestão das Crianças em Situação de Rua e o Surgimento do "Estado Serviço Social" em Cabo Verde

Já poucos anos depois da promulgação das Convenções sobre os Direitos das Crianças pelas Nações Unidas (1989), Jo Boyden, assentado as suas reflexões sobre a sua experiência como técnica envolvida em projectos de intervenção para com crianças ‘do sul do mundo’, propunha uma reflexão sobre os efeitos complexos e ambíguos da globalização da infância (BOYDEN, 1997). Apesar das vantagens que a Convenção inegavelmente tinha para o reconhecimento das crianças enquanto portadores de direitos, Boyden salientava como, através da intervenção social e da tentativa de estabelecer em termos legais os direitos das crianças, uma concepção de infância restrita e marcada por uma fundamental ambiguidade vinha a ser exportada do mundo industrializado para o Sul. Em acordo com esta noção, as crianças seriam caracterizadas por um lado por vulnerabilidade e dependência: enquanto potencialmente vítimas inocentes, devem ser alvos privilegiados de medidas de prevenção e protecção. Por outro lado porém, as crianças são potencialmente um perigo, perturbadoras da ordem pública e social, manifestando tendências, quando não supervisionadas pelos adultos, em se envolverem em comportamentos ‘anti-sociais’. No processo de globalização da infância, esta duplicidade e ambiguidade na imagem da infância, característica das representações Ocidentais, teriam sido exportadas para contextos profundamente heterogéneos, influenciando as políticas culturais da infância no Sul do mundo.
