Octavo-sized notebook containing handwritten abstracts of Massachusetts General Court legislation between 1650 and August 24, 1723 related to Harvard governance. The volume contains informal notes with extracts and summaries of legislation that established or amended the makeup and power of the Harvard Corporation. The authors of the volume are unidentified, but the notes appear to be in two different hands. The volume was presumably created during the fellowship controversy that erupted in the early 1720s after tutors Henry Flynt, Nicholas Sever, and Thomas Robie presented a memorial to the Board of Overseers calling for the tutors' right of fellowship in the Corporation.

The diary and commonplace book of Perez Fobes is written on unlined pages in a notebook with a sewn binding at the top of the pages; only the edge of the original leather softcover remain. The volume holds handwritten entries added irregularly from August 23, 1759 until December 1760 while Fobes was a student at Harvard College. The topics range from the irreverent, to the mundane, to the theological and scientific. The notebook serves to chronicle both his daily activities, such as books he read, lectures he attended, and travel, as well as a place to note humorous sayings, transcribe book passages, or ponder religious ideas such as original sin. In the volume, Fobes devotes considerable space to the subject of astronomy, and drew a picture of the "The Solar System Serundum Coper[nici] with the Or[bit] of 5 Remarkable Comets." At the back of the book, on unattached pages is a short personal dictionary for the letters A-K kept by Fobes.

Commonplace book containing a transcription of the "The Book of Harvard," a satirical account of the Butter Rebellion of 1766 followed with supplementary text of "The Arguments in Defence of the Proceedings of the Scholars" and "The Confession that was made after all was done." The above occupies pp. 1-14; pp. 15-18 missing. Pages 19-23 hold excerpts from Edward Young's Conjectures on Original Composition. Pages 24-62 hold excerpts from Saint Augustine's Heresies. Finally pages 62-64 hold an excerpt of Druidical maxims from the introduction of the first volume of Paul Rapin de Thoyras' The History of England (1724).

The binding papers contain lists of volumes bound for the Harvard library in the form of lists and bills. The books are generally identified by title, volume size (octavo, quarto, folio, etc.), or both. The series includes two 18th century documents. The first document is a one-page January 22, 1775 bill to Harvard College from "Dr. And'r Barclay" for the binding and numbering of books. Books are identified by volume size. The second document is a one-page "List of books belonging to the Library which it is necessary should be new-bound" with an initial list signed by James Winthrop the Librarian on December 13, 1786, an additional list made on April 7, 1787, and subsequent notes made in May 1787. The books are indicated by title and size.

Thaddeus Mason Harris, who served as interim librarian of the Harvard College Library in 1787 and as its librarian from 1791 through 1793, is believed to have created these notes while helping compile the library's first printed subject-based catalog. The catalog, Catalogus Bibliothecae Harvardianae Cantabrigiae Nov-Anglorum, was published in 1790 and represented a significant change in approach to the cataloging of the library's collections, which had formerly been cataloged alphabetically. These documents, many of them on small scraps of paper, contain the titles and bibliographic information of books on a range of topics, from "Anatomici" to "Rhetorica."

This book is the final output of a strategic European Union-Japan research partnership, which we initiated in order to deepen our understanding of two major economies facing similar challenges and opportunities. This publication brings together scholars from Kobe University and Bruegel along with selected outside contributors from Japan and the EU from government and leading policy institutions.

We measured the chemical composition of 100 samples from the 250-m sediment sequence retrieved from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1256 in the Guatemala Basin using a newly developed microwave-assisted acid digestion protocol followed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) analysis. We compared these data gathered onshore to the results from the flux fusion prepared samples analyzed by shipboard ICP-AES during the leg and published in the Leg 206 Initial Reports volume, as well as to 35 randomly selected samples that were prepared by flux fusion at Boston University and analyzed by ICP-AES. Comparison of the newly developed acid digestion protocol to shore-based flux fusion demonstrates that the microwave-assisted acid technique yields a complete digestion, and because this procedure includes boric acid, it is safe for use with HF acid as boric acid neutralizes excess HF. The precision for nearly all elements in shore-based acid digestions is better than 3% of the measured values, including for elements such as Ni, Cr, and V, which are typically difficult to measure in biogenic-rich sediments. The shore-based flux fusions, while better than shipboard reported precision values (as expected), has precision better than 3% of their respective measured values for all major elements (Si, Al, Ti, Fe, Mn, Ca, Mg, Na, and K) and several trace elements (Ba and Sr). Results for P, Cr, Ni, V, Sc, and Zr are better than 5% of their measured values. Not only does the newly developed acid digestion provide better analytical results than the typical flux fusion method, the shore-based acid procedure also exhibits downhole lithologic and chemical characteristics similar to the shipboard flux fusion prepared results. These results confirm that the current shipboard methods are adequate for first-order geochemical interpretations and that the microwave-assisted acid digestion holds great potential to be the primary technique of preparing sediments on future Integrated Ocean Drilling Program expeditions.

The International School of Solid State Physics presented the 56th Course"Materials for Renewable Energy” in Erice (Italy), from July 18th to 28th 2012. This course was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Scientific Research, the Materials Research Society and the European Materials Research Society. The event was hosted at the "Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture”. The school reviewed critical materials issues for the production and storage of renewable and sustainable energy. The aim of the School was to present the state-of-the-art and future perspectives in this critical area. It was to bring together the international community of students, young scientists, and experts in a unique atmosphere for reciprocal benefits in terms of enthusiasm, knowledge and new ideas.
