Multilayers of PbTe quantum dots embedded in SiO2 were fabricated by alternate use of Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) and Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) techniques. The morphological properties of the nanostructured material were studied by means of High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), Grazing-Incidence Small-Angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) and X-ray Reflectometry (XRR) techniques. A preliminary analysis of the GISAXS spectra provided information about the multilayer periodicity and its relationship to the size of the deposited PbTe nanoparticles. Finally multilayers were fabricated inside a Fabry-Perot cavity. The device was characterized by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Transmittance measurements show the device functionality in the infrared region. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Semiconductor magnetic quantum dots are very promising structures, with novel properties that find multiple applications in spintronic devices. EuTe is a wide gap semiconductor with NaCl structure, and strong magnetic moments S=7/2 at the half filled 4f(7) electronic levels. On the other hand, SnTe is a narrow gap semiconductor with the same crystal structure and 4% lattice mismatch with EuTe. In this work, we investigate the molecular beam epitaxial growth of EuTe on SnTe after the critical thickness for island formation is surpassed, as a previous step to the growth of organized magnetic quantum dots. The topology and strain state of EuTe islands were studied as a function of growth temperature and EuTe nominal layer thickness. Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) was used in-situ to monitor surface morphology and strain state. RHEED results were complemented and enriched with atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction measurements made at the XRD2 beamline of the Brazilian Synchrotron. EuTe islands of increasing height and diameter are obtained when the EuTe nominal thickness increases, with higher aspect ratio for the islands grown at lower temperatures. As the islands grow, a relaxation toward the EuTe bulk lattice parameter was observed. The relaxation process was partially reverted by the growth of the SnTe cap layer, vital to protect the EuTe islands from oxidation. A simple model is outlined to describe the distortions caused by the EuTe islands on the SnTe buffer and cap layers. The SnTe cap layers formed interesting plateau structures with easily controlled wall height, that could find applications as a template for future nanostructures growth. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Stability of the quantized Hall phases is studied in weakly coupled multilayers as a function of the interlayer correlations controlled by the interlayer tunneling and by the random variation of the well thicknesses. A strong enough interlayer disorder destroys the symmetry responsible for the quantization of the Hall conductivity, resulting in the breakdown of the quantum Hall effect. A clear difference between the dimensionalities of the metallic and insulating quantum Hall phases is demonstrated. The sharpness of the quantized Hall steps obtained in the coupled multilayers with different degrees of randomization was found consistent with the calculated interlayer tunneling energies. The observed width of the transition between the quantized Hall states in random multilayers is explained in terms of the local fluctuations of the electron density.

A detailed investigation was made into the origin of photoluminescence in an alternate multilayer system of SrZrO(3) (SZO) and SrTiO(3) (STO) thin films. XRD and room-temperature PL studies revealed a high consistency with respect to improved crystallization at elevated temperatures. The photoluminescence behaviour of SZO/STO multilayered system consists in the superposition of independent photoluminescence emissions of both STO and SZO films. Based on the present results and on previous experimental and theoretical data, we propose that the origin of the photoluminescence emission results from structural disorder generated by the presence of distortions in the ideal constituent clusters of these materials. Lateral ordering of InGaAs quantum dots on the GaAs (001) surface has been achieved in earlier reports, resembling an anisotropic pattern. In this work, we present a method of breaking the anisotropy of ordered quantum dots (QDs) by changing the growth environment. We show experimentally that using As(2) molecules instead of As(4) as a background flux is efficient in controlling the diffusion of distant Ga adatoms to make it possible to produce isotropic ordering of InGaAs QDs over GaAs (001). The control of the lateral ordering of QDs under As(2) flux has enabled us to improve their optical properties. Our results are consistent with reported experimental and theoretical data for structure and diffusion on the GaAs surface.

Magneto-capacitance was studied in narrow miniband GaAs/AlGaAs superlattices where quasi-two dimensional electrons revealed the integer quantum Hall effect. The interwell tunneling was shown to reduce the effect of the quantization of the density of states on the capacitance of the superlattices. In such case the minimum of the capacitance observed at the filling factor nu = 2 was attributed to the decrease of the electron compressibility due to the formation of the incompressible quantized Hall phase. In accord with the theory this phase was found strongly inhomogeneous. The incompressible fraction of the quantized Hall phase was demonstrated to rapidly disappear with the increasing temperature. Some sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) are the active compounds of a great number of traditionally medicinal plants from the Asteraceae family and possess considerable cytotoxic activity. Several studies in vitro have shown the inhibitory activity against cells derived from human carcinoma of the nasopharynx (KB). Chemical studies showed that the cytotoxic activity is due to the reaction of alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl structures of the SLs with thiols, such as cysteine. These studies support the view that SLs inhibit tumour growth by selective alkylation of growth-regulatory biological macromolecules, such as key enzymes, which control cell division, thereby inhibiting a variety of cellular functions, which directs the cells into apoptosis. In this study we investigated a set of 55 different sesquiterpene lactones, represented by 5 skeletons (22 germacranolides, 6 elemanolides, 2 eudesmanolides, 16 guaianolides and nor-derivatives and 9 pseudoguaianolides), in respect to their cytotoxic properties. The experimental results and 3D molecular descriptors were submitted to Kohonen self-organizing map (SOM) to classify (training set) and predict (test set) the cytotoxic activity. From the obtained results, it was concluded that only the geometrical descriptors showed satisfactory values. The Kohonen map obtained after training set using 25 geometrical descriptors shows a very significant match, mainly among the inactive compounds (similar to 84%). Analyzing both groups, the percentage seen is high (83%). The test set shows the highest match, where 89% of the substances had their cytotoxic activity correctly predicted. From these results, important properties for the inhibition potency are discussed for the whole dataset and for subsets of the different structural skeletons. (C) 2008 Elsevier Masson SAS. Various significant anti-HCV and cytotoxic sesquiterpene lactones (SLs) have been characterized. In this work, the chemometric tool Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied to two sets of SLs and the variance of the biological activity was explored. The first principal component accounts for as much of the variability in the data as possible, and each succeeding component accounts for as much of the remaining variability as possible. The calculations were performed using VolSurf program. For anti-HCV activity, PC1 (First Principal Component) explained 30.3% and PC2 (Second Principal Component) explained 26.5% of matrix total variance, while for cytotoxic activity, PC1 explained 30.9% and PC2 explained 15.6% of the total variance. The formalism employed generated good exploratory and predictive results and we identified some structural features, for both sets, important to the suitable biological activity and pharmacokinetic profile.

This work describes the evaluation of several parameters for the preparation of a tuna fish candidate as a reference material (RM) in order to measure the total As mass fraction by slurry sampling graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (SLS-GF AAS) and slurry sampling hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (SLS-HG AAS). The main parameters investigated were the homogeneity, analyte segregation and composition during material production. For candidate RM preparation, tuna fish was collected at a local market, cleaned, freeze-dried and treated using different procedures as follows: (1) ground in a cutting mill and separated in different particle sizes (2) ground in cryogenic mill. The mass fraction of As in the cryogenically ground sample was (4.77 +/- A 0.19) mu g g(-1) for SLS-GF AAS and (4.61 +/- A 0.34) mu g g(-1) for SLS-HG AAS. The accuracy of the procedures was checked with tuna fish certified reference material (BCR 627) with recoveries of 102 and 94% for SLS-GF AAS and SLS-HG AAS, respectively. The homogeneity factor was calculated for different pretreatment procedures and for particle sizes in the range of 500-150 mu g, indicating good homogeneity, except for raw fish. There was no observed analyte segregation and no losses, no contamination and no changes in the microdistribution of material during preparation.

In this work, we have studied the acoustic phonon wave propagation within the periodic and quasiperiodic superlattices of Fibonacci type. These structures are formed by phononic crystals, whose periodicity allows the raise of regions known as stop bands, which prevent the phonon propagation throughout the structure for specific frequency values. This phenomenon allows the construction of acoustic filters with great technological potential. Our theoretical model were based on the method of the transfer matrix, thery acoustics phonons which describes the propagation of the transverse and longitudinal modes within a unit cell, linking them with the precedent cell in the multilayer structure. The transfer matrix is built taking into account the elastic and electromagnetic boundary conditions in the superllatice interfaces, and it is related to the coupled differential equation solutions (elastic and electromagnetic) that describe each model under consideration. We investigated the piezoelectric properties of GaN and AlN the nitride semiconductors, whose properties are important to applications in the semiconductor device industry. The calculations that characterize the piezoelectric system, depend strongly on the cubic (zinc-bend) and hexagonal (wurtzite) crystal symmetries, that are described the elastic and piezoelectric tensors. The investigation of the liquid Hg (mercury), Ga (gallium) and Ar (argon) systems in static conditions also using the classical theory of elasticity. Together with the Euler s equation of fluid mechanics they one solved to the solid/liquid and the liquid/liquid interfaces to obtain and discuss several interesting physical results. In particular, the acoustical filters obtained from these structures are again presented and their features discussed

We study the optical-phonon spectra in periodic and quasiperiodic (Fibonacci type) superlattices made up from III-V nitride materials (GaN and AlN) intercalated by a dielectric material (silica - SiO2). Due to the misalignments between the silica and the GaN, AlN layers that can lead to threading dislocation of densities as high as 1010 cm−1, and a significant lattice mismatch (_ 14%), the phonon dynamics is described by a coupled elastic and electromagnetic equations beyond the continuum dielectric model, stressing the importance of the piezoelectric polarization field in a strained condition. We use a transfer-matrix treatment to simplify the algebra, which would be otherwise quite complicated, allowing a neat analytical expressions for the phonon dispersion relation. Furthermore, a quantitative analysis of the localization and magnitude of the allowed band widths in the optical phonon s spectra, as well as their scale law are presented and discussed

In this work we study the spectrum (bulk and surface modes) of exciton-polaritons in infinite and semi-infinite binary superlattices (such as, ···ABABA···), where the semiconductor medium (A), whose dielectric function depends on the frequency and the wavevector, alternating with a standard dielectric medium B. Here the medium A will be modeled by a nitride III-V semiconductor whose main characteristic is a wide-direct energy gap Eg. In particular, we consider the numerical values of gallium nitride (GaN) with a crystal structure wurtzite type. The transfer-matrix formalism is used to find the exciton-polariton dispersion relation. The results are obtained for both s (TE mode: transverse electric) and p (TM mode: transverse magnetic) polarizations, using three diferent kind of additional boundary conditions (ABC1, 2 e 3) besides the standard Maxwell's boundary conditions. Moreover, we investigate the behavior of the exciton-polariton modes for diferent ratios of the thickness of the two alternating materials forming the superlattice. The spectrums shows a confinement of the exciton-polariton modes due to the geometry of the superlattice. The method of Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) and Raman scattering are the most adequate for probing this excitations

The physical properties and the excitations spectrum in oxides and semiconductors materials are presented in this work, whose the first part presents a study on the confinement of optical phonons in artificial systems based on III-V nitrides, grown in periodic and quasiperiodic forms. The second part of this work describes the Ab initio calculations which were carried out to obtain the optoeletronic properties of Calcium Oxide (CaO) and Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) crystals. For periodic and quasi-periodic superlattices, we present some dynamical properties related to confined optical phonons (bulk and surface), obtained through simple theories, such as the dielectric continuous model, and using techniques such as the transfer-matrix method. The localization character of confined optical phonon modes, the magnitude of the bands in the spectrum and the power laws of these structures are presented as functions of the generation number of sequence. The ab initio calculations have been carried out using the CASTEP software (Cambridge Total Sequential Energy Package), and they were based on ultrasoft-like pseudopotentials and Density Functional Theory (DFT). Two di®erent geometry optimizations have been e®ectuated for CaO crystals and CaCO3 polymorphs, according to LDA (local density approximation) and GGA (generalized gradient approximation) approaches, determining several properties, e. g. lattice parameters, bond length, electrons density, energy band structures, electrons density of states, e®ective masses and optical properties, such as dielectric constant, absorption, re°ectivity, conductivity and refractive index. Those results were employed to investigate the confinement of excitons in spherical Si@CaCO3 and CaCO3@SiO2 quantum dots and in calcium carbonate nanoparticles, and were also employed in investigations of the photoluminescence spectra of CaCO3 crystal
