Small Town Downtown Revitalization: Applying the Main Street Approach to the towns of Perth and Carleton Place, Ontario

The downtown main street of small towns is traditionally the economic, cultural, and social heart of the community, thereby requiring particular attention from planners and researchers alike. Considering modern threats to main streets including suburban sprawl and "big box" development, revitalization strategies are essential to ensuring longevity and vitality of small towns’ cores, in terms of economy, built environment, heritage, and identity. The Main Street Approach was established to mitigate challenges by providing a revitalization tool-kit for small Canadian towns, focusing on organization, marketing and promotion, economic and commercial development, and design and physical improvements. To better understand existing municipal tools for downtown revitalization in Ontario, a comparative analysis of the towns of Carleton Place and Perth's policies was conducted using the four pillars of the Main Street Approach as benchmark for best practice, and recommendations for other small towns to better incorporate revitalization policies were suggested.

Olhares street art - investigação ação : de que forma abordagens de arte contemporânea nas escolas promovem a criatividade

In this study we intend to address a learning experience that was inspired by the intersection between public art and art education. We intend to make a reflection and analysis of pedagogical actions undertaken during this experience related to a theoretical framework to help us evaluate and improve the pedagogical and methodological strategies. The experience began with a visit to the exhibition "Street Art" at the AXA building in Porto. This visit was made with a group of children of different ages, accompanied by their parents, in May 2014. This exhibition brought new gazes for urban art. By recognizing obvious benefits such as proximity and accessibility, urban art, so rarely addressed in the classroom, may be an educational resource. Our intention in this study asks whether the contact with urban works of art can be motivating for students and facilitators of learning. We used a methodology of action research to approach urban art in visual art education lessons, exploring various art objects of the exhibition "Street Art" and the surrounding city with students. Political crossroads ahead in Sweden: The signs are red-green. EPIN Commentary No. 20, 31 July 2014

The political balance in Sweden was upset in this year’s elections to the European Parliament (EP). The far-right ‘Sweden Democrats’ almost tripled their vote-share and the Greens gained enough votes to become the second-largest Swedish party in the EP after the Social Democrats. Support for the current government incumbents, the Moderates, fell beyond expectation. The party will not recover in time for the national elections in September, whereas both the Greens and the Sweden Democrats are likely to repeat their EP election success. Since the Sweden Democrats are unlikely to form part of the coalition government – the election-winners will be the Greens and Social Democrats – Sweden’s political landscape is set to undergo a shift to the left.
