Asphalt binder is typically modified with poly type (styrene-butadiene-styrene or SBS) polymers to improve its rheological properties and performance grade. The elastic and principal component of SBS polymers is butadiene. For the last decade, butadiene prices have fluctuated and significantly increased, leading state highway agencies to search for economically viable alternatives to butadiene based materials. This project reports the recent advances in polymerization techniques that have enabled the synthesis of elastomeric, thermoplastic, block-copolymers (BCPs) comprised of styrene and soybean oil, where the “B” block in SBS polymers is replaced with polymerized triglycerides derived from soybean oil. These new breeds of biopolymers have elastomeric properties comparable to well-established butadiene-based styrenic BCPs. In this report, two types of biopolymer formulations are evaluated for their ability to modify asphalt binder. Laboratory blends of asphalt modified with the biopolymers are tested for their rheological properties and performance grade. Blends of asphalt modified with the biopolymers are compared to blends of asphalt modified with two commonly used commercial polymers. The viscoelastic properties of the blends show that biopolymers improve the performance grade of the asphalt to a similar and even greater extent as the commercial SBS polymers. Results shown in this report indicate there is an excellent potential for the future of these biopolymers as economically and environmentally favorable alternatives to their petrochemically-derived analogs.

The purpose of this manual is to organize, document, and combine Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) policies and procedures for bridge inspection practices and post-inspection recommendations so Iowa DOT personnel, local agencies, and consultants will have a readily available resource for their use. Previously, bridge inspection policies and procedures were documented by various means, making it difficult to provide consistent answers to questions regarding bridge inspection topics. This manual is intended to ensure uniformity and document best practices for inspection of Iowa’s bridges, especially as experienced inspection personnel retire.

The purpose of this manual is to document the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) policy and procedures for load rating and posting of structures within the State of Iowa. This manual is intended to ensure that every bridge is rated as to its safe load carrying capacity. This manual presents guidelines and procedures for rating bridges and outlines the documentation required

The Bridge Maintenance Manual is published solely to provide information and guidance to bridge maintenance personnel when repairing bridges in the state of Iowa. This manual is issued to secure, so far as possible, uniformity of practice and procedure in methods developed by experience. Budgetary limitations, volumes and types of traffic, local conditions and other factors may render complete compliance with the guidelines set forth, in this manual, impossible or impractical. This manual is not purported to be a complete guide in all areas of bridge maintenance and is not a substitute for engineering judgment.

EMBnet is a consortium of collaborating bioinformatics groups located mainly within Europe (http://www.embnet.org). Each member country is represented by a 'node', a group responsible for the maintenance of local services for their users (e.g. education, training, software, database distribution, technical support, helpdesk). Among these services a web portal with links and access to locally developed and maintained software is essential and different for each node. Our web portal targets biomedical scientists in Switzerland and elsewhere, offering them access to a collection of important sequence analysis tools mirrored from other sites or developed locally. We describe here the Swiss EMBnet node web site (http://www.ch.embnet.org), which presents a number of original services not available anywhere else.
